JOAN OF ARC CHURCH Have you ever held a baby? You have to be very careful, don’t you – because babies are so tiny and fragile? But holding one is such a special thing. And every time I hold a baby and it’s been many with 28 nieces and nephews and about 30 great nieces and nephews – I’m always amazed by their beautiful eyes, and their soft hair and their tiny fingers and toes and falling in love instantly. It’s kind of funny sometimes when tiny babies are brought into a group. People wait turns just to hold them – and often they talk about things they notice just from looking at them. Often you’ll hear people say that babies look a lot like their moms and dads – or their brothers and sisters. We just celebrated Christmas, Jesus’ birth. At the time he was born there was a custom that after several weeks mothers and fathers would bring their babies to the temple (their church) to be presented. This week’s Gospel lesson tells that story. Mary and Joseph bring baby Jesus to the temple and while they’re there they meet an old man named Simeon. And when Simeon holds Jesus he notices something too! Now you should know that Simeon has had a vision from the Holy Spirit – who told him that he would not die before he had met the Messiah – God’s Son. Can you guess what he notices about Jesus? That’s right. Simeon holds Jesus and he realizes that his vision has come true. He tells God that he’s now ready to come to heaven, because he has met the Son of God, just as he’d been promised. As with every baby I’ve ever held, Jesus was a special baby who would go on to do great things. And Simeon noticed right from the beginning. So with Jesus’ presentation in the temple, today marks a new beginning for us. We may not have Simeon or Anna here to prophesy or bless us—but we have one another—our family of faith. As we begin this New Year, we can make a commitment to God and one another to support each other in our faith journeys as we are all capable of doing great things. JOAN OF ARC CHURCH St. Joan of Arc Adults Growing in Faith Presentation of the Lord Today the Church remembers the time that Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Temple. We hear about two older people who had been waiting for the coming of the Messiah. They had spent their lives learning how to recognize him when he came. The amazing thing is that they recognized him in the baby brought to the Temple. Where do you recognize Christ coming today? Would people recognize you and St. Joan of Arc Parish as the Body of Christ? What do all of us at St. Joan’s need to do to become the ‘light’ for the world? Disciples Commit to Grow In Wisdom & Grace Wisdom: How are you learning more as disciples of Jesus Christ—through prayer and reflecting on Scripture and from reading and learning more about Christ? Grace: In what ways do you show God's love poured into you and then out for all people-- growing in thanksgiving for all life, in welcome and inclusion, in compassion toward the poor, the sick, the lonely, the outcast? Feast of the Presentation OR Candlemas Day This feast comes forty days after Christmas and honors Christ as the Light of the world. ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ Celebrate These Feasts Gather candles of every size & color OR Create a candle in honor of Candlemas Day. But Jesus teaches us that the good news is not reserved for a part of humanity, and to communicate it to everyone.” http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/dontbuild-fences-around-gospel-urges-pope/ Grow and Deepen Your Faith & Top Catholic News San Damiano Retreat Center www.sandamiano.org AmericanCatholic.org offers top Catholic news, Saints of the Day, Minute Meditations, Daily Catholic Message and more at http://www.americancatholic.org/ February 7-9 Ignatian Spirituality for Women (Non--silent Retreat for Women) - Ms. Mary Abinante, Ms. Mary Ahibach & Ms. Rita O’Malley February 14-16 An Ignatian Pilgrimage (Silent Retreat for Men) - Pastoral Staff Another source of Catholic news: check out http://ncronline.org/ SAN RAMON, CA Page Five MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER WEEKEND February 1-2, 2014 As Mary & Joseph were faithful to the law of Moses, let us be faithful to God’s law. We look forward to seeing you! Catholic Evangelist Brings The Power Of The Gospel To Life Richard Lane, the dynamic and engaging Catholic Street Evangelist and founder of Qorban Ministries, will be our guest speaker at the February 11, 2014 breakfast forum. Mr. Lane, son of the late Dick “Night Train” Lane; National Football League Hall of Fame cornerback, will share with us his journey and talk about the importance of sharing our faith in a pro-active fashion. He often asks “With a faith so powerful and rewarding why would you not want to share the experience as you would an experience with a good book, movie or restaurant?” He reminds us of the words of Pope Francis, who is calling for all of us to take our values and the Word of God to the streets. “Instead of imposing new obligations, (Christians) should appear as people who wish to share their joy…” (Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel: Evangelii Gaudium) Register now to hear this dynamic and uplifting Evangelist speak about what we know in an new and exciting way. JOAN OF ARC GRIEF SUPPORT WORKSHOP February 25th through April 8th 7:00pm to 9:00pm The death of a loved one is unlike any other loss. Whether the death was sudden and tragic, or one with warning and preparation, the reality of death leaves most of us in a state of shock, confusion and sadness. Grieving people need time and space to honor their grief. Each person’s grief journey has its own path and its own timeline. Although there is no right or wrong path, there are stepping stones that are part of each journey…… "AUTO NEEDED" Your St. Vincent de Paul Society helps people in various ways. Most often that help is in the form of monies for food, utilities, rent and occasionally clothing and furniture from our warehouse. One of our recent clients is in need of a car which she needs for work and to pickup her special needs child from school. She is a single mom, a member of the parish and is in need of a reliable vehicle. If you have an extra vehicle, and would like to help this lady, please contact Dick Gilpin at 925-830-1236 or Ron Weston at 925-833-9744. The car will be donated through St. Vincent de Paul directly to our client. This will make you eligible to deduct the appraised value of the car on your 2014 tax return.
