T-SHIRT PRINTING STEP BY STEP Are you new to Garment Printing? At first glance, it may seem complicated, and a little overwhelming, but once you understand the basics, it is actually very easy. This overview provides a basic understanding of how our products fit into the screen printing process. With this same screen printing technique, you can produce thousands of different types of custom imprinted garments and promotional products. STEP 1 CREATE FILM POSITIVE Create designs using your personal computer and laser or ink-jet printer. Clip-Art and popular design programs let you create designs without an artistic background. Make a Film Positive by printing each color of the design onto a piece of translucent film or paper. Software breaks your full color images apart automatically. STEP 2 EXPOSE SCREEN To transfer your image from the film positive to the screen, the film must be put in contact with an emulsion-coated screen and exposed to UV light. It is important to have good film-to-screen contact and precise control of exposure time. STEP 3 DEVELOP OR RECLAIM SCREEN Develop the exposed screen with water. This removes the emulsion where the positive image was on your film, making a stencil that ink passes through when you print. Re-use screens by reclaiming (removing) the stencil after you have printed the job. STEP 4 REGISTER SCREEN AND PRINT GARMENTS Printing is the easy part! Register your screens by aligning the image on each screen to the film positive which has been taped to one of the pallets. Then clamp the screens in place, use the microregistration adjustment for final alignment and print. STEP 5 FLASH CURE To get a bright, opaque image on dark colored garments, it is often necessary to flash cure or partially cure the ink and then print another layer on top. This print, flash-cure, print technique is also used for multi-color printing on dark garments. STEP 6 CURE PRINTED GARMENT The last step is to fully cure the ink with a conveyor dryer. Getting the proper ink-cure is the key to a long lasting image. Screen Making Automatic printing requires standardized image placement for consistent and speedy setup. The ideal screen size is 23" x 31" (58 x 79cm). Most printers find that only two FlashBacks let them produce the variety of designs that their customers demand. FlashBack’s unique ability to let you print, flash and cool all in the same print head gives you the option of flashing in any or all positions of the press. Drying A larger dryer can help you get the most out of your automatic press or support both manual and automatic printing while a smaller dryer may result in a production bottleneck. Additional Infeed / Exit can make it easier for the dryer to load garments from multiple presses. Receiving and Setting-Up Your New Automatic Equipment An automatic press, larger dryer and exposure unit are often the largest pieces of equipment in your shop. A technician can help you assemble your new automatic press and teach you how to use it, but you are responsible for receiving, positioning, supplying the necessary electrical power, compressed air lines, and sample print job. Most exposure units and dryers can fit through a standard man-door, but a 34" (86cm)—Doorway Knock-Down Option is only available on certain 6 or 8 color automatic presses and must be pre-ordered. SCREEN MAKING PRODUCT GUIDE The quality of your screen printed product starts with the quality of your screen. All Workhorse screen exposure systems feature digital time control for accurate and repeatable exposure times and a powerful vacuum holddown system which provides intimate film to screen contact for maximum image resolution. If your plans call for producing a moderate number of simple, athletic type designs, the LUMITRON may be all that you will ever need. To produce a moderate number of higher resolution designs, choose the POINT1000 and if you want to produce a high number of screens of the highest possible resolution choose the PHOTOSHARP. PERFORMANCE FEATURES IMAGE RESOLUTION: Do you want to produce simple or highly detailed designs? While, simple and athletic designs still make up the majority of screen printed images, the latest software and clip art make producing complex art work more simple than ever. GOOD: Lumitron’s UV Fluorescent Light Source reproduces coarse halftones and line art designs. BETTER: Point1000’s Halogen / UV Light Source reproduces halftone and fine line designs. BEST: PhotoSharp’s Focused Metal Halide Light Source reproduces the most detailed halftone and fine line designs. SCREEN SIZE: Do you use smaller Manual or larger Automatic Size Screens or a combination of both? If you have space limitations, a small exposure unit will fit the bill. If automation is in the future, you may want to consider a larger exposure unit. BETTER: Unlike other table-top exposure units that only fit one manual sized screen, Lumitron handles either a manual or automatic sized screen up to Large 23x31”/ 58x79cm O.D. New, small, home-based or pre-print companies may only need to produce a moderate number of new screens per day. DIRECT EMULSION OR CAPILLARY FILM TYPE: What type of Direct Emulsion or Capillary Film do you plan to use? Photopolymer sensitized materials are typically the fastest and most expensive. Diazo sensitized materials are typically slower and the least expensive while Dual-Cure (a combination of Photopolyer and Diazo) are moderately priced and moderately quick. GOOD: Lumitron’s UV Fluorescent Light Source is compatible to Diazo emulsion and is ideal for Photopolymer or Dual-Cure sensitized emulsion. Lumitron is not suitable for thick, high-density stencils. BETTER: Point1000 is compatible with with Diazo and is ideal for those Photopolymer or Dual-Cure sensitized emulsion. Point1000 is not suitable for thick, high-density stencils. BEST: PhotoSharp’s dual spectrum lamp is compatible with emulsions or capillary films sensitized with Diazo, Photopolymer or Dual-Cure sensitized. DRYING PRODUCT GUIDE Drying or curing the ink on printed garments is the critical final step. Too little time and heat result in an under cured design that washes out while too much time and heat may result in scorched garments. A dryer capable of handling larger orders can be the key to growing your business and a dryer that is too small will result in a production bottleneck, keeping you from producing efficiently and on schedule. It is ultimately less expensive to buy a dryer that you can grow into rather than buying a larger dryer in years to come. Plastisol inks typically cure at 320 degrees F (160c), and the faster you can get both the garment and entire thickness of the ink to that temperature without scorching, the faster you can produce. The heavier the garment or thicker the ink deposit the more energy it takes to reach this critical temperature. Infrared (IR) Heat transmits heat quickly but is very sensitive to time and distance making it very unforgiving for bulky three dimensional items such as sweatshirts or jackets. Moving air converts IR heat to slower and more forgiving Convection Heat. In terms of balancing speed and flexibility, it is best to have both IR heat for speed and convection heat for flexibility. EASE OF LOADING GARMENTS: How quickly and easily to you want to load garments onto your dryer? The wider the dryer’s belt, the less you have to fold the garment and the faster you can load them.
