STEP BY STEP
Are you new to Garment
Printing? At first glance,
it may seem complicated,
and a little overwhelming,
but once you understand
the basics, it is actually
very easy. This overview
provides a basic understanding of how our
products fit into the
screen printing process.
With this same screen
printing technique, you
can produce thousands of
different types of custom
imprinted garments and
promotional products.
STEP 1
CREATE FILM POSITIVE
Create designs using your personal computer and
laser or ink-jet printer. Clip-Art and popular design
programs let you create designs without an artistic
background. Make a Film Positive by printing each
color of the design onto a piece of translucent film
or paper. Software breaks your full color images
apart automatically.
STEP 2
EXPOSE SCREEN
To transfer your image from the film positive to the
screen, the film must be put in contact with an
emulsion-coated screen and exposed to UV light. It
is important to have good film-to-screen contact
and precise control of exposure time.
STEP 3
DEVELOP OR
RECLAIM SCREEN
Develop the exposed screen with water. This
removes the emulsion where the positive image
was on your film, making a stencil that ink passes
through when you print. Re-use screens by
reclaiming (removing) the stencil after you have
printed the job.
STEP 4
REGISTER SCREEN AND
PRINT GARMENTS
Printing is the easy part! Register your screens by
aligning the image on each screen to the film
positive which has been taped to one of the pallets.
Then clamp the screens in place, use the microregistration adjustment for final alignment and
print.
STEP 5
FLASH CURE
To get a bright, opaque image on dark colored
garments, it is often necessary to flash cure or
partially cure the ink and then print another layer
on top. This print, flash-cure, print technique is also
used for multi-color printing on dark garments.
STEP 6
CURE PRINTED GARMENT
The last step is to fully cure the ink with a conveyor
dryer. Getting the proper ink-cure is the key to a
long lasting image.

Screen Making
Automatic printing requires standardized image placement for consistent and speedy setup. The ideal
screen size is 23" x 31" (58 x 79cm). Including a high-speed, high resolution screen exposure unit in
your automation package optimizes throughput and quality. See our Screen Making Product Guide to

Printing
Do you want to print a high volume of sophisticated designs, or do you just want to produce more simple
athletic or corporate designs more quickly than you current do manually? What is your ideal image size?

Flash Curing
How many flash curing units do you need? Most printers find that only two FlashBacks let them produce the variety of
designs that their customers demand. FlashBack’s unique ability to let you print, flash and cool all in the same
print head gives you the option of flashing in any or all positions of the press.
Drying
A larger dryer can help you get the most out of your automatic press or
support both manual and automatic printing while a smaller dryer may
result in a production bottleneck. Additional Infeed / Exit can make it easier
for the dryer to load garments from multiple presses.
Receiving and Setting-Up Your New Automatic Equipment
An automatic press, larger dryer and exposure unit are often the largest pieces of equipment in your shop. A technician can help
you assemble your new automatic press and teach you how to use it, but you are responsible for receiving, positioning, supplying
the necessary electrical power, compressed air lines, and sample print job. Our Shop Layout Tool is
a handy resource.
Most exposure units and dryers can fit through a standard man-door, but a 34" (86cm)—Doorway Knock-Down
Option is only available on certain 6 or 8 color automatic presses and must be pre-ordered. Be prepared with:
• Fork Lift—to unload machinery from the truck and to position it in the desired location.
• Licensed Electrician—to properly put power to the machinery.
• Licensed Plumber— to properly put compressed air to the machinery.
• Man Power—to assist the technician with the installation of the machinery.
• Sample Print Job—including properly imaged screens, inks and blanks on which to print.

Workhorse screen exposure systems
feature digital time control for
accurate and repeatable exposure
times and a powerful vacuum holddown system which provides intimate film to screen
contact for maximum image resolution. If your
plans call for producing a moderate number of
simple, athletic type designs, the LUMITRON may be
all that you will ever need. To produce a moderate
number of higher resolution designs, choose the
POINT1000 and if you want to produce a high
number of screens of the highest possible resolution
choose the PHOTOSHARP.
PERFORMANCE FEATURES
IMAGE RESOLUTION:
Do you want to produce simple or highly detailed
designs? While, simple and athletic designs still make up
the majority of screen printed images, the
latest software and clip art make producing
complex art work more simple than ever.

CAPILLARY FILM TYPE:
What type of Direct Emulsion or Capillary Film
do you plan to use? Photopolymer sensitized
materials are typically the fastest and most
expensive. Diazo sensitized materials are
typically slower and the least expensive while
Dual-Cure (a combination of Photopolyer
and Diazo) are moderately priced and
moderately quick.

and is ideal for Photopolymer or
Dual-Cure sensitized emulsion.

NUMBER OF JOBS / COMPLEXITY OF DESIGNS
Do you want to produce simple or extreme designs? The more print heads or colors that your machine has,
the more colorful the designs you can produce. Simple athletic or commercial designs can be produced with
a 4 color printer, while more colorful graphics or photographic images call for a 6, 8 or 10 color printer. For
the best of both economy and flexibility, choose a model that with upgradeability to more colors.
How many different jobs do you want to produce at once? The more colors that a machine has, the more
jobs you can produce at once. A 4 color printer can produce up to two 2-color designs while an 8 color
printer can produce four 2-color designs. More colors are useful when printing on both the front and back of
a garment or when producing several short-run jobs.
GOOD: 4 color printers such as Odyssey 4100B, Odyssey 4400, Workhorse W44M or W44A.
BETTER: 6 color printers such as Odyssey 6400, Odyssey 6600, Workhorse W64, W66M or W66A.
BEST: 8 color printers such as Workhorse W86O, W88O or W88A—or a 10 color printer W108O.
PRODUCTION SPEED
How quickly do you want to produce? The more stations that you have the quicker you can produce. With
multiple stations, multiple operators can help produce the job and while you are printing one garment, you
can flash another. The greater number the stations, the less rotation motion for the operator and the more
cooling time between flashing.
GOOD: 1 station limits you to one operator and is very slow when using the print-flash-print technique.
BETTER: 4 stations give you multi-operator, rotary load production in a small footprint.
BEST: 6 or 8 stations maximize production especially on dark garments.
EASE OF SET-UP
How quickly and easily do you want to set up your jobs? If you are printing a few jobs a week, set up time
and effort is less important than when you are printing a few jobs a day. Virtually every job requires that you
adjust the off-contact to achieve the desired ink deposit and to accommodate various garment thicknesses.
Often the screen angle must be adjusted to compensate for the weight of the ink, squeegee and screen.
Finally, micro-registration helps you with the small, final alignment of your screens.
BETTER: Odyssey printers have fine thread micro registration far superior than other value priced
machines. Off contact and screen angle adjustments require the use of a wrench.
BEST: Workhorse printers are the original tool free adjustment machines with super responsive micro

What is all heads down printing and is it right for you? All Heads Down
printing is simply a slightly different printing technique that requires a
slightly different printing machine. With our Workhorse Original or
Modular Series, multiple operators increase production by assisting with
the loading and unloading of garments, while one operator prints. This
technique is called Rotary Load Printing. Workhorse All Heads Down Series

Flash Curing Units are an important part of
the Print-Flash-Print Technique used to
produce bright, opaque and
multi-colored images
on dark colored garments.
Without a flash cure unit, the
color of the garment may
show through the ink,
leaving the image muted or dull.
This Print-Flash-Print Technique is also used when
printing non-porous textiles such as printing nylon
jackets.
SIZE OF PRINTED IMAGE:
Do you print small fashion designs or large athletic designs?
BETTER: With an 18x18”
(46x46cm) panel, the Mercury
M1818 flash cures larger images than
comparably priced economy units.
BEST: With an 18x20” (46x51cm)
panel, the Primus P1820 and P1820A is well
matched with today’s larger images.

FLASH CURING TIME CONTROL:
It is important to flash cure for the proper amount of time. Flash
curing for too little time, and you risk leaving the ink wet. Flash
curing for too long and you risk scorching the garment.
GOOD: Workhorse Manual flash curing units including
the Mercury M1818 and the Primus P1820 have
convenience knobs and smooth rotation for easy manual
control of flash curing time.
BEST: With a footswitch initiated timed rotation, the Primus
P1820A provides the precise control of flash curing time. This
timed control is ideal for high production shops looking for
exacting control and for inexperienced printers that may not
have a good feel for correct flash curing times.
THERMO-GUN
Ultimately less expensive than temperature tapes, the
laser sighted Thermo-gun measures the actual surface
temperature of the ink to assure the proper cure.
Dryers may tell you the temperature of the oven, but
only Thermo-gun tells you the actual temperature of
the ink. Point Thermo-Gun at the printed area of the
garment just before it exits the oven area of your
conveyor dryer.

Investing in an automatic press is an important step in growing your business. Get the most out of
your investment by evaluating your current and future production requirements and choosing a
machine designed to keep pace with them. Your considerations should include Design Complexity,
Production Speed, Image Size, Floor Space, and Preferred Flashing Method.
Design Complexity
Do you want to produce simple or complex designs? 6 color presses are great for producing
athletic or corporate designs, while 8 to 10 color presses expand capabilities to more complex
work. 12 to 14 color presses enable you to print virtually anything you can imagine.
Good: Freedom, Javelin or Olympian 6 color presses.
Better: Freedom, Javelin or Olympian 8 or 10 color presses.
Best: Javelin and Olympian 12 or 14 color presses.
Production Speed
How quickly do you want to print? Production speed is determined by a number of variables including the
machine’s index speed and number of print stations. Naturally, there is a limit to the speed and duration
that an individual operator can accurately load garments, so production speeds are typically less of a
concern for companies with fewer employees that simply want to streamline production. Shops that produce
high-end designs with many employees may prefer a higher production machine.
Good: Freedom has a simple and proven index system and is available in up to 10 stations. Up to 540/hr.
Better: Javelin has a faster indexing system, double index capability and is available in up to 14 stations. Up to 840/hr.
Best: Olympian has a faster indexing system, double index capability and is available
in up to 16 stations. Up to 840/hr.

What image size best meets your needs? Freedom and Javelin’s 16x18" (40x46cm) print area meets most shop’s requirements,
while others require the larger image areas found on Olympian Standard: 20 x22" (51x56cm), Olympian Select: 22 x 27"
(56x59cm), and Olympian Jumbo: 23x31" (58x79cm).

Floor Space
Do you have limited floor space or smaller doorways? 6 color machines consume minimal floor space and are
available with a 34" (86cm) Knock-Down Option to fit through smaller doorways. 8 to 14 color machines need more

Inter-Color or Intra-Color Flashing
FlashBack can be used as an Intra-Color flash or Inter-Color flash. Your preference may impact the size of
machine that you want. Intra-Color flashing lets you print, flash and cool on the same print head so that you can
produce light on dark work on a smaller, less expensive machine. If you prefer faster indexing
speeds, and have the floor space, FlashBack can also be used as a high-speed Inter-Color
flash. Inter-Color flashing lets you print on one head while flashing and cooling on the next.
This provides faster indexing and requires a larger machine to produce comparable designs.

maintenance-free print heads! Mechanical stroke-length adjustment
and our All-Access Control Panel eliminate the maintenance

Quick-Release Floating Squeegee/Flood Assembly
Tuf’s style of quick-release, floating squeegee/flood assembly is typically found only on much more
expensive European equipment. This time tested floating print / flood method provides a consistent
pressure and ink deposit throughout the image area. The quick release center pin is a great alternative
to expensive pneumatic squeegee clamps and faster and easier to use than clumsy U clamps.
Quick-Change-Over/Pneumatic Screen Clamps
Pneumatic Screen Clamps enable you to quickly clamp and unclamp
screens with the flick of a switch. Combined with the Spring-Loaded
rear clamp, changing out screens takes only seconds.
Fast and Easy Print/Flood Angle and Pressure Adjustments
Tuf’s Print Angle, Flood Angle and Pressure Adjustments mimic the way that you
print manually, making adjustments fast, easy and intuitive. Compared to
conventional chopper-style systems, our system gives you a full range of pressure
and angle adjustments with fewer knobs and ratchet handles to adjust.
Single-Piece, Double-Durometer Squeegee/Flood Assembly
All Tuf automatics are equipped with single-piece, double-durometer (70-80 duro) squeegee/flood
assemblies. Consider the time savings. Our single piece design minimizes cleaning and set up efforts.
Changing from a coarse mesh with a thicker ink to a fine mesh with halftones is as simple as flipping over
the squeegee / flood assembly.

FlashBack’s patented Intra-Color Flashing capability sets all Tuf automatics
apart from the pack by letting you produce more colorful, bright and
opaque images on dark garments at the fastest speeds possible. Intra-Color
Flashing means that for the first time, printing, flashing and cooling are
performed on the same print head. Because you do not lose a color for
flashing and another color for cooling, FlashBack enables you to produce
jobs that otherwise require a much larger, more expensive press. And
because you can put a FlashBack on any or all print heads, it gives you much
more flexibility and performance than machines with complicated revolving
programming.
For those that prefer Inter-Color Flashing (conventional in-head flashing),

How Does FlashBack Work?
After the print stroke, FlashBack slides its thin quartz element in between the
garment and the screen. The printed image is instantly flash dried and then
cooled.
What Keeps the Ink from Drying in the Screen?
A heat reflector focuses the heat on the garment while protecting the screen.
This combined with turbo-air fans keep the screen and ink cool.

revolving programs that turn the press into a batch printer. This
requires an 8 color press and requires that the garment go around
the machine multiple times!

To produce this job with a press equipped with
conventional In-Head flashes, you need a larger and more
expensive 10 color press!

Production Tip! Using the Print-Flash Mode in this 6-Color example, set your index delay to 0, and put your FlashBacks in heads 2 and 6. This
speeds up production. While your FlashBacks are shuttling-in, your press is also indexing, saving you valuable production time.

DRYING
PRODUCT GUIDE
Drying or curing the ink on printed
garments is the critical final
step. Too little time and heat
result in an under cured
design that washes out while too
much time and heat may result in
scorched garments. A dryer capable
of handling larger orders can be the
key to growing your business and a
dryer that is too small will result in a
production bottleneck, keeping you from
producing efficiently and on schedule. It
is ultimately less expensive to buy a
dryer that you can grow into rather
than buying a larger dryer in years to
come.
Plastisol inks typically cure at 320
degrees F (160c), and the faster you can
get both the garment and entire
thickness of the ink to that temperature
without scorching, the faster you can
produce. The heavier the garment or
thicker the ink deposit the more energy
it takes to reach this critical
temperature. Infrared (IR) Heat
transmits heat quickly but is very
sensitive to time and distance
making it very unforgiving for
bulky three dimensional items
such as sweatshirts or jackets.
Moving air converts IR heat to
slower and more forgiving
Convection Heat. In terms of
balancing speed and flexibility,
it is best to have both IR heat for
speed and convection heat for
flexibility.

EASE OF LOADING GARMENTS:
How quickly and easily to you want to load garments onto your dryer? The
wider the dryer’s belt, the less you have to fold the
garment and the faster you can load them.
GOOD: At 20” (51cm), the Mercury Compact Dryer’s belt is
narrow, yet wider than other compact dryers.
BETTER: At 26” (66cm) for the PQ2608 / PC2608 and 30”
(76cm) for the PQ3011, these dryers offer easy loading.
BEST: At 40” (102cm) for the Powerhouse PQ4013 and 52”
(132cm) PQ5217, these dryers offer fast, fold-free loading.
CURING CAPACITY:
How many garments do you want to produce 5 years from now? Curing capacity is
determined by a dryer’s belt width, oven length and wattage. Wider belt widths equal faster
loading. Longer Ovens equal faster belt speeds. Higher wattages equal achieving curing
temperature more quickly. Maximum production efficiency is achieved with all three: Wide
Belt Width, Long Oven and High Wattage.
GOOD: At 72 pieces per hour, Mercury
Compact Dryer is ideal for a part time
business with limited space.
BETTER: At 200-300 / hr, Powerhouse
PQ2608 / PC2608 are our most popular
dryers for start-up shops planning to
grow. At 400-500 / hr, PQ3011 is a great
match for shops running multiple manual
presses or a small automatic press.
BEST: At 600-800 / hr for the Powerhouse PQ4013 and 1000+ / hr for the PQ5217,
these dryers are great for larger shops needing higher production.
CURING CONTROL:
Drying for too little a time or at too low a temperature may result in under-cured,
washed-out prints. Drying for too long a time or too high a temperature may
result in scorched garments.
GOOD: Mercury Compact Dryer is primarily an IR
dryer, but has a simple exhaust system. Proper
curing is controlled with an adjustable belt speed.
BEST: Powerhouse dryers features adjustable
belt speed, digital temperature control and recirculating forced air. Combined with IR heat,
