Night of the Proms
Series begins Friday, February 6, 11 p.m.
Earth—The New Wild
Series premieres Wednesday, February 4, 9 p.m.
Community Cinema: American Denial
Nobel Laureate Gunnar Myrdal’s1944 study provided a provocative inquiry into the dissonance between stated beliefs
as a society and what is perpetuated and allowed in the name of those beliefs. His look at the United States’ racial psyche
becomes a lens for modern inquiry into how denial, cognitive dissonance, and unrecognized, unconscious attitudes
continue to dominate racial dynamics in American life.
Join us for a free preview screening Thursday, February 19, 6 p.m. at Scruffy City Hall
Heavenly Stitches thanks you for supporting East Tennessee PBS.
East Tennessee PBS exists to serve the needs of East Tennessee as a community partner affecting positive change by
educating, entertaining and challenging minds.
The Swift Story
In 1883, the first African-American graduate of Maryville College, Rev. William H. Franklin, established an institution of
higher learning for newly emancipated blacks. Swift Memorial College in Rogersville, Tennessee, became a beacon
of higher education in the rural South. Through archival interviews, newly discovered images, and talks with area
historians, East Tennessee PBS explores the college’s legacy and impact on Southern Appalachia. The Swift Story is
made possible by the support of the Tennessee Arts Commission, Eastman, US Bank and TVA.
Saturday, February 28, 12 p.m.
Earth: A New Wild
This series features spectacular natural history footage from the most striking places on Earth, filming encounters
between wild animals and the people who live and work with them. With up-close looks at a range of species—giant
pandas, humpback whales, African lions, Arctic reindeer—conservation scientist Dr. M. Sanjayan reveals that cohabitations with animals can work and be mutually beneficial.
Wednesday, February 4, 9-11 p.m. and February 11-25, 10-11 p.m.
Hanford
In 1943, thousands of men and women arrived in a remote part of Washington state to work on an important but
highly secretive project to support the war effort. Hanford Engineering Works was one of three major components in
the Manhattan Project—the project to build the world’s first nuclear weapon. Viewers go inside B-reactor, now being
preserved as a National Historic Landmark along with sites in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Sunday, February 22, 4 p.m.
Tennessee Life
Host Vickie Lawson interviews radio talk show host Hallerin Hilton Hill about his early love of radio and the temporary
job that launched his career of 20-plus years. Hill also discusses the philosophy that drives the positive attitude he
shares daily with his listeners. And viewers will meet Tennessee native Obayana Ajanaku, an expert on the West
African djembe drum, which has taken him around the world and inspires him to teach students across the state.
Sunday, February 15, at 5 p.m.
