For 10 memorable weeks, more than 700 student volunteers joined organizers and local African Americans to shatter the foundations of white supremacy in the nation’s most segregated state. Working together, they canvassed for voter registration, created Freedom Schools, and established the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. The campaign was marked by sustained and deadly violence, including the notorious murders of three civil rights workers, countless beatings, the burning of 35 churches and the bombing of 70 homes and Freedom Houses. Freedom Summer airs on Tuesday, June 24, at 9 p.m. Join our free preview screening Friday, June 20, 6 p.m. at the East Tennessee History Center. Sizzling Sundays East Tennessee PBS exists to serve the needs of East Tennessee as a community partner affecting positive change by educating, entertaining and challenging minds. British dramas and comedies continue to hold court Sunday nights in June. David Tennant opens the Masterpiece Mystery! season with the gripping legal thriller The Escape Artist on June 15. Derek Jacobi returns in Season 2 of Last Tango in Halifax and joins Sir Ian McKellen in the new comedy Vicious. These programs premiere June 29 alongside Masterpiece Mystery! Endeavour Season 2, which chronicles the adventures of a young Inspector Morse. Consult the program guide for dates and times, or visit www.EastTennesseePBS.org. Lent at Ephesus The Benedictines of Mary are a monastic order of nuns who are also chart-topping recording artists. Their new album, Lent at Ephesus, includes poignant chants, intricate harmonies and rousing hymns of glory and redemption. Taking viewers inside the monastery in rural Missouri, this special tells the fascinating story of how the sisters made their album and includes full-length performances that demonstrate the power and beauty of these Lenten songs. Friday, June 6, at 9:30 p.m. Unsung Heroes: The Story of America’s Female Patriots This two-part documentary is an inspirational saga of unrecognized courage and sacrifice that touches every community in the nation. These are women, who despite the hardships of military service are proud of their longstanding commitment to the patriotic ideals of the United States. It is a story of all guts and no glory and its theme, the price of liberty, is relevant to all Americans. This courageous heritage can be traced back to the Revolution where women donned men’s clothes and took up arms against the British. The service of these women has been heroic, their sacrifices profound and their enormous accomplishments largely ignored. Sundays, June 22 and 29, at 7 p.m. Tennessee Life Watch this month’s new Tennessee Life for a visit to Circle G Wild Animal Park & Safari in Strawberry Plains and a conversation with comedian Leanne Morgan, who finds plenty of hilarious material in motherhood.
