The Bridge Builders - World Massage Festival
The Bridge Builders Program for the 2007 Massage Therapy Hall of Fame October 20th & 21st Pensacola, Florida The Bridge Builder An old man, going a lone highway, Came at the evening, cold and gray, To chasm, vast and deep and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide. The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had no fears for him; But he turned when safe on the other side And built a bridge to span the tide. “Old man,” said a fellow pilgrim near, “You are wasting strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again must pass this way; You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide -Why build you the bridge at the eventide?” The builder lifted his old gray head: “Good friend, in the path I have come,” he said, “There followeth after me today A youth whose feet must pass this way. This chasm that has been naught to me To that fair-haired youth may a pit-fall be, He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building the bridge for him.” Will Allen Dromgoole www.worldmassagefestival.com Collector’ ’ S edition $2.00 I am ABMP. By 2006 Massage Therapy Hall of Fame Member Bonnie Prudden Chances are, if you’ve made the decision to attend the 2007 WORLD MASSAGE FESTIVAL and you are reading this program, you may have a good understanding of MASSAGE. If you work in that discipline, you know even more. If on the other hand you are here by chance, know that life rarely gives information by accident. The questions you might ask are, “Why am I here?” “What or who is here that I need to know?” “What new or even partially new idea do I require to make my life more interesting, more exciting, easier to manage or even more fun?” Life gives us so many chances to change in so many ways, through so many people, places and events. We should all be probing like lighthouse beams to discover what is out there. If it’s for you, don’t go home without it....... Here is a “Bonnieism” to help get you through the Festival! “It does not make sense to complain about conditions unless you’ve put your mind to devising ways to change them.” Bonnie Prudden, Director Bonnie Prudden Myotherapy, Inc www.bonnieprudden.com info@bonnie prudden.com [email protected] 1-800-221-4634 520-529-3979 Proud Sponsor: World Massage Festival and Massage Therapy Hall of Fame We Relieve Stress! He has been licensed and in full time practice since 1984. In 1985, Michael graduated from the Swedish Institute in New York City while at the same time attending the Ohashi Institute where he graduated from the advance program in 1986. In June of 1997, Michael was awarded a level three instructor status from the International Thai Therapist Association (ITTA). He has been teaching AyurvedicThai Bodywork courses internationally since 1996. M Michael’s classes are routinely infused with the teachings of the illustrious and auspicious Vedic culture. Traditional ayur-vedic ceremonial rituals such as puja (sacred invocations for family/social progress), tratak (centering, meditation, opening 2007 Hall the “third eye” for physical/emotional stability), pranayama (conscious breathing disciplines producing inspired insight), and mantra (vocalizing sound resonances for mental clarity and self-empowerment) are typically experienced in his courses as satisfying and elucidating supplemental instructions. udith DeLany, LMT, began teaching NeuroMuscular Therapy in 1984. She has emerged as a leading pioneer in the field of NMT. As a result of many years as a clinician and educator, Judith refined and developed methods of teaching the American version of NMT. She is the Director of the NMT Center, an educational/training organization that produces 80+ NMT events nationwide and internationally each year for the healthcare industry. Licensed Massage Therapists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurse Massage Therapists, Chiropractors, and Dentists alike benefit from the curriculum and hands-on techniques of the NMT workshops. The NMT Center school program, developed by DeLany, incorporates NMT into school curricula so that the student graduates fully trained and certified in NeuroMuscular Therapy. As an internationally recognized speaker on such topics as chronic pain and myofascial dysfunction, Judith has served as a presenter and/or keynote speaker at numerous conventions and conferences in various fields of medicine. She has been awarded recognition for legislative work as well as outstanding instruction. aron Mattes received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Wisconsin State University-Superior, 1970, majoring in Physical Education. J A of Fame !! T herese Pfrimmer in the 1940’s, created Canadian massage. She worked on a cross-muscle fiber principle and called her work Deep Muscle Therapy. In the past 50 years, this therapy has changed the lives of literally thousands. It’s one of the fastest growing techniques used today. Her discovery, which led to the reversal of her own paralysis, consists of an extremely detailed, total body cross-fiber treatment which causes corrective changes in the muscle on a cellular level. B inda Tellington-Jones’ work has its roots in a philosophy that sees all beings -- humans and animals alike -- as reflections of a Divine Whole. The Tellington Method was first created 4 decades ago as a system of animal training, healing and communication that allows people to relate to animals in a deeper, more compassionate way -- a way that furthers inter-species connection and honors the body, mind and spirit of both animals and their people. The Tellington Method utilizes a variety of techniques of touch, movement and body language to affect behavior, performance, and health, and to increase an animal’s willingness and ability to learn in a painless and anxiety-free environment. om Myers studied directly with doctors Ida Rolf and Moshe Feldenkrais, and has practiced for more than 25 years in a variety of clinical and cultural settings. He served as chair of the Rolf Institute’s anatomy faculty and as a founding member of the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. His practice combines structural integration, sensitivity to physiologic rhythms and movement. Myers currently offers training seminars internationally through Kinesis, Inc. The Anatomy Trains concept is featured in Myers’ video course, training seminars and a book in development with Churchill Livingstone. rita Ostrom began her massage practice at Esalen® Institute in 1969. Together with the Esalen® Massage Crew, she helped refine and continually update Esalen® Massage, an individualized, wholistic bodywork approach. Her studies with Trager, zero-balancing, Patrick Douce and Feldenkrais and countless movement, meditation and awareness practice, and psychological disciplines continue to grow and inspire her work. She is also a licensed psychotherapist and is convinced the body and mind are inseparable, always playing together. “We don’t have a healing field without connection,” she affirms. For her, the healing experience also comes through contact with nature, something bigger than ourselves. She teaches in the US, Canada, and Japan. avid Palmer began his professional massage career in 1980. Before his teacher, Takashi Nakamura, returned to Japan in 1982, he prepared David to assume operation of The Amma Institute. The Amma Institute was the first school in the United States exclusively devoted to traditional Japanese massage. It was here that Palmer first began experimenting with teaching his graduates to work on clients seated in a chair, rather than lying on a table. In 1989 Palmer stepped down as Director of the school to focus full-time on the development of the Chair Massage industry. D In 1983 Palmer began work on the first special chair to make seated massage comfortable and convenient for both the customer and the practitioner. In 1986 his chair was introduced to the bodywork profession by Living Earth Crafts and has served as the basic model for all subsequent massage chairs. To date there are over fifteen massage chairs and tabletop units on the market that have been sold to an estimated 100,000 practitioners. T L Linda’s highly effective and revolutionary approach to working with animals brought her world wide recognition, and it was out of this success that Tellington TTouch for humans has arisen, emerging as an important addition to the increasingly respected world of alternative healing practices. D r. Janet G. Travell (1901-1997) was truly a remarkable woman. She once said that, “Life is like a bicycle - you don’t fall off until you stop pedaling... It is better to wear out than to rust out, so keep pedaling.” She kept pedaling all her life, and carved out a remarkable career, leaving behind a pioneering body of work related to the treatment of myofascial pain. It was during her time studying arterial diseases at Beth Israel Hospital in New York as a Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation fellow (1939-1941) that Dr. Travell became absorbed in the problems of skeletal muscle pain. Dr. Travell helped develop new anesthetic techniques for treating painful muscle spasm by employing local procaine injection and vapocoolant sprays such as ethyl chloride (used widely in sports medicine today.) It was this pioneering expertise that changed her life in more ways than one. The pioneering techniques she developed for treating and controlling muscular pain were shared with colleagues and taught to other physicians, thereby allowing countless patients to benefit from her research and practice over the course of her life, and well beyond. Meet Our Instructors & Speakers B rita Ostrom will be the Keynote Speaker at the Induction Ceremony, Sunday, October 21, 2007 at 6:00 PM. With a master’s degree in Philosophy and Languages from the Universitee Des Lettres De Montpellier, she began her career as a teacher and a translator. Traveling from the age of 16 around Europe--and later around the world--she pursued her passion for discovering new horizons, and crossed the Atlantic in order to explore the United States and experience life here. It was here that she decided to change her career. Keeping her goal to help people in mind, she attended the Sarasota School of Massage Therapy. Three months following her graduation in 2004, she opened Two Touch Company--a Thai studio and massage therapy office in Sarasota, Florida. Many of Nathalie’s clients were asking for deep tissue treatment. She soon began to experience pain and fatigue in her hands and wrists. When she started using bamboo to assist her with deep tissue work, she noticed that her pain subsided and her clients loved it. She developed an innovative way to give bamboo massage on the table (Bamboo-Fusion) and in the chair (Bamboo-2-Go), meanwhile creating her own bamboo set to give the massage. Her goal today is to help therapists provide deep massage without hurting themselves. This technique aids in avoiding repetitive injuries, such as carpal tunnel, and reduces the stress on thumbs, wrists and hands. Nathalie will be teaching “Bamboo Fusion Therapy” on Saturday. www.worldmassagefestival.com Flora Medica Genuine & Authentic Essential Oils Education & Workshops Study Pranic Healing with Dr. Lorraine Graves!
