Ranging from the heart of Bundaberg city to the coastal communities, the parish encompasses a wondrous assortment of central Queensland features. Our people are warm and welcoming, like our rural environment. Our churches are places of worship, reflection, peace and healing. The parish is located at the northern periphery of the Diocese of Brisbane and is one of the two Anglican parishes serving Bundaberg. It is a well established parish located in a well established regional city with a growing coastal area. We have people of diverse Anglican tradition but moderate Anglo-Catholic traditions prevail. It is a cohesive community despite considerable diversity with friendly and welcoming congregations. The parish’s Mission Statement is clearly articulated and its Mission Action Plan has strong support from Parish Council and its subcommittees. There is a large core of faithful, committed and involved parishioners. A very large contingent of volunteers assist in areas where they feel competent as LAs, intercessors, musicians, home visitors, children’s ministries, op shop and soup kitchen workers, maintenance workers for the church and grounds, event organisers, etc. The Bundaberg population of approximately 70,000 is typical of a large regional centre. There are several new housing developments, both in the city and along the coast. There is a significant proportion of retirees and the current parish communities largely reflect the ageing population. Three of the parish’s congregations were surveyed – both of the morning congregations at Christ Church and the St Peter’s Bargara congregation. The results from these surveys were used to develop the Mission Action Plan that would guide the development of the parish over the next few years. The MAP focuses on four areas: 1. Teach the Faith Jesus went throughout Galilee teaching Mt 4:23 To develop the understanding of what it means to be the church: the people of God at mission: a. Conduct regular scripture study and discussion groups, welcoming the participation of all. b. Provide opportunities for people to develop an enhanced understanding of the faith through the distribution of written teaching materials, establishing a theological library and conducting training programmes on sacraments and liturgy. c. Continue our involvement with local schools through Religious Education and special services. 2. Serve Communities I am among you as one who serves Lk 22:27 To demonstrate the compassion of Christ in the communities of the Parish: a. Conduct regular Pastoral visiting program to infirm, housebound and elderly. b. Provide emergency food relief for those in need as well as pastoral support. c. Invite and welcome the needy and underprivileged to parish activities. d. Develop a Welcome Package. 3. Increase Giving God loves a cheerful giver 2 Cor 9:7 To be faithful and generous with all that God has given us: a. Increase giving through growth in congregation. b. Undertake broader fund raising activities and encourage community involvement. c. Conduct annual mission project. 4. Grow Congregations Bear fruit and grow in the whole world Col 1:6 To grow the understanding of congregations to see themselves as confident, enthusiastic, prayerful bases of ministry: a. Advertise services and parish activities in local press, bulletins and brochures at motels, community noticeboards, and provision of visitor cards, etc. Parish Profile for Anglican Parish of Bundaberg Page 15 b. Follow up and visit all families who have had children baptised, newly married couples, bereaved families and lapsed people on the parish roll. c. Continue to support the ministry to children and young families. d. Have a meaningful presence in community forums and conduct annual public Christmas Carol service. Each of these four areas of focus is driven by clergy staff and a group of interested parishioners who meet regularly and continue to work on ways of operationalising the MAP. While significant progress has been made on many aspects of the Plan, there are aspects of the MAP still to be fully developed. The success of recent initiatives is reflected by the following NCD data. The results for the 2013 NCD surveys are shown on pages 16 to 18, including the progress charts comparing the 2013 results with the 2010 results.
