Acosta: What If He Wins?
By Lee Barnathan
By Lee Barnathan
Santa Clarita City Councilman Dante Acosta is seeking the 38th District
State Assembly seat vacated by Scott Wilk, who is running for state senator
in the 21st District, now that Sharon Runner is not seeking reelection.
What this comes down to is a battle of
ideas and the lawsuits that follow if one’s
ideas aren't heard or heeded.
What happens on the City Council if Dante Acosta wins his bid for the 38th
Assembly District seat?
Is it possible to lose by winning?
Residents might be one step closer to
o
finding out.

for ensuring its discharged water contains
no more than 100 milligrams of chloride per liter (mg/l) because without an
EIR, the district can’t move forward and build the necessary plants. Failure
to meet the deadline would trigger massive fines, which likely would trickle
down to the residents.
The council will have two choices, according to Councilmember TimBen
Boydston. Members can either appoint someone to finish Acosta’s term or
hold a special election.
Boydston first served on the council as an appointee to finish the remainder
of Cameron Smyth’s term in 2006 after Smyth left the council for the
Assembly.
Boydston favors the election. “I would be inclined to have the people
decide,” he said. Then, after acknowledging that an appointment would cost
much less, he added, “There are costs to democracy.”
Acosta also serves as Mayor Pro Tem, so if he were to leave, the council
would choose a new Mayor Pro Tem. That likely won’t happen until after
the new council is seated following November’s election. The council also
will have to decide on a new mayor. At press time, Dante Acosta did not
return our calls for comment.

Water District Lawsuit
An unincorporated association called the Affordable Clean Water Alliance
(ACWA) brought the suit in response to it being unsatisfied with the route the
sanitation district chose to take.
Since the injection was to be in Stevenson Ranch, the residents “complained
with pitchforks,” Lawrence said, and that plan was dropped in favor of trucking
the brine to a county plant in Carson, where it would be treated and released
into the ocean.
“This whole mess is being thrust on us,” ACWA member Flo Lawrence said.
Chloride is a substance so toxic that if untreated
it can rust cars and cause serious health problems,
but add sodium to it and the result is table salt.
Bryan Langpap, a project manager with the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles
County, which shares responsibility for getting the chloride levels to 100mg/l,
does not believe this ruling will affect meeting the deadline. To continue, the
districts must get the EIR certified, and they will meet March 23 at 6 p.m. at
City Hall to attempt to do so.
Chloride is a substance so toxic that if untreated it can rust cars and cause serious health problems, but add sodium to it and the result is table salt.
The problems started in 2013, when Santa Clarita residents lost the fight to be
allowed to have chloride levels in discharged water higher than 100 mg/l. They
point to other districts such as Simi Valley (150 mg/l), Conejo Valley (150mg/l)
and Thousand Oaks (150mg/l) that are allowed higher levels. Some people call
paying for the necessary equipment to make this possible a “chloride tax.”
The SCV Sanitation District came up with plans to remove the chloride via
reverse osmosis at the Valencia Water Reclamation Plant. This filters the water
and leaves behind salty water called brine. The district’s plan to get rid of the
brine by way of deep well injection, a process by which the water would be sent
deep underground.
Lawrence, then president of the Castaic Town Council, objected to the plan
and, in a July 23, 2013 letter to the district members on CTC stationery, suggested five alternatives. These included filing a lawsuit or pursue a legislative route,
the end result being the same: get the level increased.
The district ignored the letter, so the town council tried again with a letter dated
June 30, 2014. Again, no written response, although Lawrence said he received
lip service akin to good ideas, but it’s too late to go in another direction.
Meanwhile, the ACWA, led by community leader Allan Cameron and lawyer
Robert Silverstein, was planning legal action and asked Lawrence if he wanted
to add his name. Lawrence said yes.
The court decision not only sets aside the EIR, it halts the sanitation district’s
ability to start trucking out the brine until the EIR is certified. Langpap said the
public would be able to comment during Wednesday’s meeting.
But the ACWA isn’t stopping the fight. The SCV district said in a statement that
the brine-removal method is different than the one described in the 2013 EIR.
The ACWA countered with a letter sent to the sanitation district board (Mayor
Bob Kellar, Councilmember Laurene Weste, county supervisors Hilda Solis and
Mike Antonovich), its lawyers and Langpap, that warns that moving forward
this way “strongly suggest(s) that the District is now, or shortly will be, in contempt of the Court’s judgment and ruling.”
As for losing by winning, Lawrence said, “That’s an eventuality, but my mother,
when I was growing up, taught me to look for what’s right instead of what’s
wrong.”
He insists there is still time to find the best solution, which he says is to get the
chloride levels increased. Kellar has said that fight is past.

Ugly Parking
By Andrew Taban
H
illary or Bernie?
Trump or Cruz?
Democrat or Republican?
These are the questions we will continue to face throughout the primaries and
into November.
Many agree that our political system is drastically changing, with both
powerhouse parties deciding what the American people stand for rather than
hearing the voice of the voters. We have been crushed and bullied by the very
system that we have created and have allowed the corruption of money and
greed to enter our political system and buy out our politicians.
Today, we have allowed even the simplest foundations to be governed with
ulterior motives rather than focus on the issues at hand, such as our education
system and health care. It seems we no longer decide what is best for the
greater good, but rely on the media to mold our thoughts and create bias for
right and left wing candidates. For those of us who do vote, we vote based on
our political party instead of our basic beliefs, values, and morals.
We are at a point where we no longer take the time to listen to opposing
views in fear of the challenges we may face. Some of us aren’t even registered
to vote, but feel passionate enough to post on social media and bring other
candidates down, with little to no information on the issues at hand, but
more with a drive stemmed from ignorance and anger.
We need to shift the power from the media and politicians back into the
hands of the people and move forward with decisions that will make our
nation thrive once again.
How hard is it to park between the lines?

College of the Canyons Softball
Team Earns Award for Scholarship
T
he community college softball team with the
highest academic achievement in California
is located in Santa Clarita, according to a state
athletic association. Last week, the College of the
Canyons softball team was awarded the 2015 California Community College Athletic Association
(CCCAA) Scholar Team Award.
The highest academic team achievement given
annually by the CCCAA, the Scholar Team Award
emphasizes the academic achievement of all members of one specific team. Only one team is selected
for each CCCAA sport, with a total of 22 men’s
and women’s teams honored for the 2014-15 school
year.
“When we started looking at the grades from
the fall and spring progress reports, I thought
there might be a chance to see our girls honored
with Scholar Team Award. To have received that
achievement is outstanding.”
Wissmath’s team also produced a number of
impressive individual performances throughout
the 2015 season. Eight players were named AllWSC, including catcher Lauren Anderson, who
earned WSC Player of the Year honors. Shortstop
Cheyenne Steward was also named an All-SoCal
selection.
To be eligible, all team members must have excelled
academically, with a total GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The team should also have demonstrated better
than average accomplishments in intercollegiate
athletic competition.
In addition, three members of the 2015 team
continued their playing careers at four-year schools.
Anderson is now attending Miami University
in Ohio; pitcher Milana Casillas is at University
of California, San Diego; and infielder Kaitlyn
Shreves attends Boise State University. All three
players carried a GPA of 3.7 or higher.
The 2015 COC softball team posted a combined
GPA of 3.24.
“The 2015 softball team featured great leadership
from the top down,” said Albert Loaiza, COC
On the field, the team finished with a record of 2812-1 to place second in the Western State Conference (WSC), Blue Division, while also earning a
spot in the CCCAA Southern California Regional
playoffs. Canyons concluded the 2015 season as the
No. 10 ranked team in the state.
“I’m extremely proud of the way this team represented themselves, both in the classroom and on
the field,” said COC head coach John Wissmath.
athletics counselor. “Coach Wissmath and his staff
have instilled an ‘academics first’ environment and
that paid off last year. … This group of girls was
hardworking and, most importantly, displayed a
proactive approach to their education. It’s great to
see them recognized for all the work they completed in the classroom.”
The team will be acknowledged at the Celebration of Student Athletes Awards Luncheon during
the CCCAA’s annual convention on Wednesday,
March 30 in Ontario.
The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) is the governing body providing oversight of intercollegiate athletics within the
California Community College System. The single
largest educational system in the world, with attendance in excess of over 2.6 million students annually, the California Community College system
serves one-third of all community college students
in the United States. The CCCAA establishes the
rules and regulations to administer the intercollegiate athletic activities of the nearly 27,000 student
athletes attending California’s community colleges.

COC IT Department Honored with Tech Award
N
ew online services offered by College of
the Canyons gained the attention of a state
technology organization recently. The college’s
Information Technology department was awarded
the 2016 California Community College Chief
Information Systems Officers Association (CISOA)
Technology Excellence Award in recognition of the
services, which were designed to enhance student
success.
The college recently launched an “online education plan” for students, online counseling services,
and online tutoring services through The Learning
Center (TLC), all features evaluated by the CISOA
award committee.
Each of the projects have been funded through the
approximately $2.6 million Department of Education Title V Grant the college received in 2014,
with those dollars allocated toward technological
improvements designed to enhance the educational
experience of all students.
“These initiatives are extremely important in ensuring our students are able to meet their educational
goals,” said Jim Temple, associate vice president
of information technology at the college. “Collectively, they have provided students with the tools
they need, at the time they need them, in order to
be successful. I am delighted the Chief Information
Systems Officers Association recognized our efforts
with their Technology Excellence Award.”
The college’s online education plan is an interactive
program that helps students track the classes they
need in order to meet their stated educational goals.
The plan also provides students with a proposed
timeline for their classes, a weekly format to show
their various course options, and a progress page to
monitor how close they are to graduation and/or
transfer.
In fall 2015 the college also hired its first full-time
online counselor, with the position dedicated to
meeting with students, answering questions and
fulfilling other student service needs in an online
forum.
By utilizing the college’s WebEx software, online
counselors are now able to share the computer
desktop space with students, allowing for the review
of transcripts, student educational plans, course petitions and other web-based resources. The software
can also be used to conduct live online workshops
in a webinar format.
“Both the student and I see the same thing, which
makes the conversation easy to follow and allows
the appointment to be as effective as an in-person
meeting,” said Sonny Requejo, the college’s online
counselor.
The TLC provides online tutoring for students in
a variety of classes, with many of the resources
available inside TLC’s Writing Center also available to students online. TLC staff has implemented
a variety of workshops, video tutorials, and online
technologies to its lineup of services, including the
use of programs including WebEx, Smart Pens and
Tutor Chat. Online writing resources are available
to students enrolled in online and hybrid courses in
every discipline at no additional cost to the student.
“With WebEx students can share their work in
real-time through various screen sharing capabilities, annotation functions, a virtual whiteboard and
other video/audio components, as well as an online
chat function,” said Kim Haglund, TLC coordinator at the college.
The CISOA Technology Excellence Award annually recognizes demonstrated excellence through technological advancements by a community college
Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) or IT
staff member. This can include, but is not limited to
the development of new applications, infrastructure
advancements, green initiatives, or the successful
execution of a new technology related plan or college initiative. Nominations are evaluated on the
basis of: effective educational technology leadership
at the institution, district, region and/or system
level; mentoring of other professionals; visionary
achievements and effectiveness in identifying and
advancing technology opportunities for the various
needs of higher education; and prominence in the
arena of state and national technology agendas.
This year’s award was presented last month during
the California Community College Chief Information Systems Officers Association (CISOA) annual
convention held at the Hyatt Regency Orange
County in Garden Grove.
The conference featured the theme “The Future
is Now” and was designed with a broad range of
offerings appealing to community college IT leaders, technical staff and department employees who
regularly interface with their college’s enterprise
resource planning and student information systems.
The goal of the COC IT department is to enhance
the learning and operating environment of the college, through the strategic deployment of technology and audio/visual resources. The department
is responsible for the installation, maintenance and
upkeep of all computer hardware, software and audio/visual equipment throughout the Santa Clarita
Community College District. The department also
provides technical support to all district faculty and
staff through department offices located at both the
Valencia and Canyon Country campuses.

Technology, visit www.canyons.edu/Offices/IT/.

The Valencia boys’ soccer team was the most unlikely of the three teams to
win a CIF championship. The Vikings earned at at-large bid into the Southern
California Regionals and were facing Godinez, the No. 1 seeded team in the
playoffs.
Valencia won the game, 2-1, over Godinez at the Santa Ana Public Schools
Sports Complex on Saturday. Patrick Miller scored the game-winner in the 71st
minute. He tapped in a crossing pass from Justin Ikeora. Miller also made a
defensive save two minutes later, which preserved the one-goal lead.
Luis Garcia Sosa gave Valencia (23-2-2) a 1-0 lead in the first half. He scored
on a free kick 35 yards out in the fourth minute.
Godinez’s Ismael Robles tied the score a minute later. The score remained
tied, 1-1, for the next 66 minutes.
Miller broke the tie, racing into the box from his defender position. He took a
pass from Ikeora off a free kick and redirected the ball into the net.
The Valencia boys’ soccer team won its first CIF Southern California Regional
championship in school history. The Valencia boys are also the first team from
the Santa Clarita Valley to win a CIF Southern California Regional championship.
Godinez (22-2-4) lost for only the second time this season.
Chad Donohoe had a chance to tie the score in the final seconds of the game.
Hart was down three points, 76-73. Donohoe took a 3-point shot, but it was
blocked by Ayala’s Austen Awosika. Donohoe recovered the blocked shot and
passed to Whitten Dominguez, who was fouled and sent to the free-throw line.
With 2.5 seconds left in the game, Dominguez made the first free throw. He
intentionally missed the second to give his team a chance to tie the score. But
Ayala grabbed the rebound and ended the game.
Donohoe finished with a game-high 27 points and made eight 3-pointers.
Hart (23-9) led 38-32 at halftime and maintained its lead entering the fourth
quarter. Hart had a four-point lead, 52-48, after three quarters.
Ayala’s Miles President took over the game in the fourth quarter. He scored 11
of his 13 points in the final period and propelled his team to the lead with less
than four minutes to play.
Awosika led all scorers with 23 points in the game. His biggest play of the
game was denying Donohoe a chance to tie the score in the final seconds.
Ayala improved to 32-3.
Dominguez reached double figures for Hart with 10 points. Hart lost to Lynwood in the CIF Southern Section Division 2A semifinals.

Making Your Parents Proud While Attending COC
By Sarah Farnell
C
ollege of the Canyons: It’s the Harvard of Southern California community
colleges. So, if you break it down, you’re basically attending Harvard.
Yet, not everyone thinks so—including parents. Perhaps this is because of the
stigma that community college has created for itself. Or, more likely, because
of what COC students choose to do with their time while enrolled at College
of the Champions. If your parents are worried about you falling into the vicious cycle of unproductivity and routine nothingness, here are some ways to
prove to them that you are on the right track.
1. Start a punk band.
At this point in your life, it’s now or never. Your parents have always
told you to do what you love, so there’s no way they won’t be totally
psyched about your new Blink-182 cover band. Use the garage to store
the equipment, and only play at night. When mom hears you practicing in the wee hours of the morning, she will be super stoked for your
band to go on that 3-week tour.
2.
Become an Arts major.
Having a practical educational goal is so 1987. Jobs for college graduates are being handed out like hotcakes. I mean, who wants to be a
doctor or a lawyer when you can major in Jazz Studies? Jazz isn’t
going to study itself. Parents love jazz.
3.
Forget about personal hygiene.
Now that you’re an adult, it’s time to do adult things. What could
possibly be more grown up than a patchy, unwashed beard? Show the
world—and your parents—that you can do this one on your own.
4.
Don’t overload yourself. (Take 6 Credits at a Time)
Being 20 years old is really hard. There is so much going on at once,
so it’s better to just take it easy. As long as you take one or two classes
a semester, you’ll definitely be able to transfer in six years—tops. This
will let dad and his new wife Carol see that you know how to pace
yourself and manage your own schedule. Nice!
5.
Take a semester off.
So you don’t want to follow the fold—I get it. Going straight to college after high school might not be the thing for you. Taking that nine
month break from school would really prepare you for challenges that
you will face in those tough classes. When you come back to COC,
you will be ready to pump out those research papers like nobody’s
business.

OPINION
Why An Admitted
Liar is Better Than a
False Prophet
By Robert Patrick Lewis
O
f all the commentary, results,
banter and speeches surrounding
the night of the Ohio primary this
week, there was one line above all
that truly stood out to me. And,
interestingly enough, it was from
John Kasich, the Ohio Governor
who has not been known for his
speech prowess or one-liners from this
campaign:
“I refuse to take the low road to the highest
office in the land.”
It was an excellent, well thought-out
presidential statement. But way too
late to do any good.
Fox News (and I’m sure all the others
as well) included every political
pundit under the sun to weigh-in and
give their opinions in the wait for the
final results, and even allowed the
absolute definition of political scum
and corruption, Karl Rove, to give his
two cents.
Why Karl Rove, a four-time
college dropout, FBI-investigated
liar, Watergate accomplice and a
person who has literally based his
entire political career (from College
Republicans to present day) on lies
and deception, is still included in the
political discussion in this country
is an indictment of our political
machine itself – but, I guess, quite
fitting.
Before I go any further … seriously,
if you only knew of Karl Rove from
his Fox News commentator and Bush
presidency status, do a quick Google
search to look up his history. The
Wikipedia page lays it all out. I’ll
wait here. The guy is a scumbag, and
as long as he’s included in American
politics, it will never get better.
Thankfully, a very large number of
Americans (yourself
now
included)
Letter
to the
Editor
have harnessed the power of the
internet to find out the truth about
liars like Rove who have been pushed
up by the establishment purely for
their ability to stir up the storm and
incite those people who choose to
make important decisions entirely
on emotions with as little rational
thought as possible.
But last night, as I put my absolute
disgust for Rove aside and listened to
the garbage spewing from his mouth,
I realized once again exactly why
Trump has the megalithic numbers
that he has, despite the horrible things
people say about him, and regardless
of what he actually says about certain
issues while on the campaign trail.
While Bill, Hillary and Karl
Rove have become PR ninjas at
sidestepping responsibility for
anything they say or do, the internet
has allowed those wishing themselves
to be informed to know the truth. If
you haven’t seen the YouTube video
documenting all of Hillary’s outright
lies, showing each lie and also where
she acted as if she never said it, it’s
worth the watch. There is also an
entire Wikipedia page dedicated to
Bill Clinton’s sexual misconduct,
which is also a nice reminder before
the elections begin (please share on
social media so we can force some
accountability on the Clintons, for
once).
Even Ted Cruz, when finally seeming
to admit the low-ball political move
of suggesting Dr. Ben Carson was
dropping out of the race just before
the Iowa vote, still tried to do the old
Clinton shuffle and toss the blame
over to CNN for the actions of his
very own campaign.
And then we have The Donald.
The explanation has been out
there for quite some time now, but
the Republican establishment still
doesn’t seem to understand why he’s
gained so much popularity. This isn’t
hard to fathom, as the Republican
constituency has been telling the
establishment for the better part of
eight years to change or get out of
the way. They didn’t listen to any of
their own constituents, and this is the
result.
Lean to the Left
Take the Pledge for Parity
By Sylvia Turner
D
id you celebrate International Women’s Day on March 9?
It reflects a movement seeking to keep the needs of women at the forefront –
on the political agenda, in the workplace, and on the international stage.
This year’s theme was “Pledge for Parity” (that means equivalence).
There’s nothing violent or negative here. No one is calling for you to hit protestors or telling you to “knock the crap out of them,” like you’d be told at a
Republican presidential rally.
The IWD’s cause asks us to affect our own spheres of influence and to “accelerate gender parity.”
The IWD site calls for you to pledge the following:
• Help women and girls achieve their ambitions
• Challenge conscious and unconscious bias
• Call for gender-balanced leadership
• Value women’s and men’s contributions equally
• Create inclusive, flexible cultures
“Worldwide, women continue to contribute to social, economic, cultural and
political achievement,” the site says. “But progress towards gender parity has
slowed in many places.”
According to IWD, the World Economic Forum predicted in 2014 that it
would take until 2095 to achieve global gender parity. Calling progress “glacial,” they estimate the gender gap wouldn’t close entirely until 2133.
Despite programs all over the world urging young women to go into engineering, there’s still a shortage of women in the field. It’s hard to erode a natural
bias that hinders women’s success in certain fields, especially STEM arenas.
And among girls and women excelling in STEM courses, they’re sometimes
hesitant to enter male-dominated industries.
The presence of gender diversity showing up in the workplace is kind of stuck.
They improved a fair amount, but they hit a plateau, before it became a level
playing field.
Here’s something interesting to Republicans: Global studies show a number
of positively impacting results from gender parity. They’ve seen in Europe that
countries with more equality have a higher GDP. And where there are more
women political leaders there is more prosperity.
Republicans are supposed to be the
backbone, the entrepreneurs, the
“always choose the hard right over the
easy wrong,” God-fearing and honest
party. But that’s given way over the
past decade to career politicians, just
as with the rest of politics, ready to
change their opinions and “values”
on a dime just to get a vote and stay
in office. They have become the
antithesis of the founding fathers of
this country, who were pillars of the
community and only served in office
to do their civic duty, then left to go
back to tending their business.
So, despite where he stands on
issues, despite his raucous tone and
sometimes audacious rhetoric, he is
giving the Republican constituents
what they asked for: someone who
will stick to his guns and give us his
actual opinion, regardless of changing
polls, insider deals or the checks
lobbyists are sending for bribes ...
oops! I mean campaign contributions.
The Republican establishment has
been bought and sold like heroin
on a dirty street corner, and hasn’t
even attempted to hide it. We’ve
seen election after election where
Republicans have sworn to uphold
the Constitution and Republic all the
That’s right. Gender parity is linked to economic prosperity.

The New Normal?
Here we go folks, unless Ted Cruz can mount a big comeback (and I really hope
he does), it looks like The Donald is going to be the guy. For all of you Trump
haters, I say get over it and deal with it. I think we conservative types need to put
our big boy pants on and realize that this unique type of conservatism is what
we have this time around and we’d better make the most of it. It looks like this
is going to be the new normal and if this is what the voters want, then we need
to bust our butts behind the anti-Hillary movement.
A good reason to support Trump over Hillary was brought home during
their speeches after the polls closed Tuesday night. Hillary’s campaign slogan
is Fighting for Us. The theme of her speech was about fighting for the rights
of children, women, the poor, civil rights, human rights, and of course, LBGT
rights. Trump’s slogan of Make America Great Again was highlighted in his
speech, with strengthening the military, lowering taxes, helping business, keeping
corporations in America, bringing corporations back to America, and getting
the trillions of dollars stashed overseas brought back here. Of course, he talked
about unfair trade practices too. Come on, Trump hating conservatives, who
would be better for us – him or her?
outrageous amount of payroll tax that is sucked out of them. They don’t fret
over keeping the electricity on, or even getting fined for violating some stupid
regulation.
Then they can’t believe so many are unbelievably in support of Trump, with
his evil, violent, non-conservative, racist, flip-flopping ways. They wonder why the
evil, non-patriotic Tea Party types are so angry and distrusting of anyone, or any
party, changing their testicle-less ways of governing. They should get more
of the Joe the Plumber types (remember him going at it with Obama?) on these
shows to convey a sense of reality to these shows, because these ego-driven
know-it-alls have no freaking clue!

Don’t Really Care
I have been asked again, “Why hardly any ranting on local politics?” After
giving it some thought, it’s because very few really care. Sure, there are folks
who care a great deal, but unfortunately and sadly, not near enough do. I’ve
done some informal polling (asked about 40 people) and have found that
not many can tell me how many seats there are on the council or even know
more than one of their names. Most do not know the name of our mayor!
They also don’t think the council affects them much at all, regarding their
personal or business lives. I don’t agree with them, but it is what it is. Even the
controversial issues in recent times (billboards, chloride, mayor pro tem) drew a
blank look when I brought them up to these folks.
How can more interest be generated in local politics and leaders? I think it’s
what I’ve been ranting for a couple of years now, MAYOR and DISTRICT
voting. For sure, there are a lot of detractors of the idea, with good points
about why this sort of system is not good. But, I think if prospective council
people ran in areas where the folks lived, there would be more buy-in to the
local government process. I’ve said this before, but I remember growing up
in Tucson and city council candidates coming to our door, campaigning
regarding what they would do for our area of town. As a young person, who
didn’t give much of a rip about anything but me, it got my attention.
An election for our mayor would create instant attention from many more
Santa Claritans, and having competition between two or three candidates who
focused their campaign on issues just down the street would do the same, if not
more. Okay, so that’s my rant on local stuff !
They are Protesting the Wrong Candidate!
The gutless protestors we see trying to violate the first amendment rights of
the front running Republican candidate are low information, skulls of mush,
immature, freeloading brats. But, that’s not what bothers me about the protests.
What really gets me is if any candidate should be protested against it’s the
socialistic, Santa Claus candidates that will be the death of this country if one of
them is elected.
If we common sense types were to raise the same hell as these punks are, it
should be against Hillary and Bernie’s emotional, non-common sense, budget
busting, and debt-swelling promises. Their blithering rhetoric should scare the
bloody hell out of us. This nation cannot survive the economic strains their
programs would put on us, let alone allow for any sort of growth. The stuff the
mindless punks are yelling about have no bearing on the well-being of us and
our families; but, on the contrary, the economic benefits of the policies Mr.
Trump advocates will help us all, including the protestors, bless their little hearts.

DECLARE OR DEFEND?

second trump lead holds Declarer to only six trump tricks (♠A, ♠K, plus two
ruffs in each hand) to go with the three side-suit tricks.
So 4♠ is down one? Not necessarily, it may be possible to set up a long
Heart for the 10th trick, and the best way to do that is to lose a Heart at
Trick Two. The defense returns another trump, and now Dummy’s ♥A is
cashed, then a Heart ruffed. Declarer’s ♣Q is taken by West, who cannot
lead another trump. He does best to exit with a Club, but Declarer wins
that in Dummy, ruffs another Heart, cashes the ♦A, ruffs a Diamond, draws
East’s last trump, and scores Dummy’s long Heart. Making 10 tricks!

being able to enjoy the long Heart. So, down one after all? No, of course

South’s hand was not good enough to bid her Diamonds at the two-level,
so she responded 1♠ and soon found herself declaring a 4♠ contract.

State Division 3 playoffs, Shauna VanGrinsven was a top performer in the game.
Unfortunately, Canyon lost the game,
47-45, and the Cowboys were eliminated
from the CIF State playoffs.
A Valencia High School sophomore, Chance
Rich reached the CIF State meet in wrestling
in the 113-pound division earlier this month.
He won his first match at the state meet before
losing his next two. He won the CIF Southern
Section Eastern Division championship and was
a finalist at the CIF Masters Meet.
“Shauna was an incredible force for us
on Saturday against Lakeside,” says Jessica Haayer, coach of the Canyon High
School girls’ basketball team. “She had
11 points and played tremendous defense
against 6-foot 4-inch Emma Merriweather.
Shauna demonstrates hard work, dedication and leadership on a daily basis.”
“Chance has been with me since he was seven

coach Brian Peterson. “From day number one,
holding onto his father’s leg, to today, when
he goes out and ferociously pins the number
one wrestler in the state, all of his days of
dedication, hard work, and sacrifice is what sets
him apart from the average kid. It’s beginning to

June Ballot to Include $230 Million Bond Measure
T
he Santa Clarita Community College District
Board of Trustees voted unanimously last
week to place a $230 million bond measure on
the ballot in the June 7, 2016 election. The vote
was largely in response to the growing shortage of
classrooms and labs resulting in 4,000 students per
semester placed on waitlists.
“College of the Canyons has a demonstrated need
for new classrooms and labs, along with safety and
improvements in accessibility, in addition to technology upgrades,” board president Bruce Fortine
said. “And because this college has a proven track
record of helping local students, professionals
and employers … it is clear that enrollment will
continue to increase.”
Anna Frutos-Sanchez, a Santa Clarita resident
and local business leader, attended the board
meeting.
“Our college has demonstrated a consistent ability to plan for the future, leverage state and local
resources for maximum impact, and provide the
facilities and programs our community needs,” she
said. “This bond is a crucial next step in ensuring
College of the Canyons is equipped and ready to
deliver the education and training students and
workers need to excel in 21st century careers.”
Job market projections show that thousands of
the jobs in L.A. County and the state will require
more education than a high school diploma, but
not necessarily a bachelor’s degree. By 2025 an
estimated 30 percent of all job openings in California, or 1.9 million jobs, will require some college,
but not a bachelor’s degree.
During the board meeting, information was
presented about how the college has struggled to
provide enough classes at times when students can
take them. During peak attendance times – from 8
a.m. to 2 p.m. and between 6 and 10 p.m. – classrooms, labs and parking lots are at their maximum
capacity. Because of this overcrowding, it takes
students longer to complete their educational
goals.
Before the vote, Avneet Ghotra, the student member of the board of trustees, shared her hardship
getting classes.
“Adding more labs, especially at the Canyon
Country campus, will relieve the overcrowding
and help students to earn their degrees faster and
transfer to a four-year campus,” she said.
Enrollment data shows that 60 percent of the
students who graduate from the William S. Hart
Union High School District schools attend College
of the Canyons at some point. And, more than
900 Hart district students attend College of the
Canyons while they are still in high school.
“We can’t rely on funding from the state of
California to accommodate both our current and
future enrollment. Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van
Hook said. “With no new construction money
approved by Sacramento in the last 10 years, there
are billions of dollars in projects that need funding
in California,” Local bond funding is the only way
to ensure College of the Canyons has the resources it needs to meet this community’s expectations
for access to higher education.”
College of the Canyons operates two campuses, a
154-acre site at the corner of Valencia Boulevard
and Rockwell Canyon Road in Valencia, and a
72-acre facility on Sierra Highway in Canyon
Country. The Canyon Country campus exceeded
its five-year enrollment target the day it opened in
2007, drawing more than 3,500 students. Because
of continued enrollment growth there, the campus
is eligible to receive 85 percent of the construc-
tion costs of three permanent buildings from the
state, assuming state resources are available, and
only if the college has local funding to match state
resources.
The Valencia campus was designed 46 years ago to
serve a capacity of 5,000 students. Currently, the
college serves 20,000 students on both campuses.
Projections now call for a student body exceeding
30,000 in little more than a decade. At Wednesday’s meeting, college staff also briefed the board
about urgent facilities needs, including upgrades to
security and electrical systems, plumbing, lighting,
heating, ventilation, fire and earthquake safety, as
well as repairing or replacing several aging roofs,
some of which are more than 40 years old.
The June 7, 2016 general obligation bond measure
adheres to the guidelines of Proposition 39, which
requires approval by 55 percent of the voters within the college district. It also includes accountability measures such as a citizens’ oversight committee and annual audits. The impact on homeowners
would be $15 per $100,000 of assessed value (not
market value), which would generate $230 million
over the next 12 years.
“We want to be sure voters understand that the
money provided by the bond will stay in our
community and cannot be taken by Sacramento,”
Fortine said. “It will be carefully monitored, with
citizen oversight and third-party audits. And, the
funds will be spent only on the specific projects
we’ve described. The money cannot be used for
things like faculty, administrator, and staff salaries,
or other college operating expenses.”
The college plans to post information about the
bond measure, project lists and general information on its website at www.canyons.edu.

Celebrity Waiter Dinner
13
6th Annual Soroptimist
International of Greater SCV
Fashion Show
by Linda Pedersen
W
Over all, event officials estimated this year’s
event brought in around $123,000.
The first place table, Dogs Playing Poker,
was the brainchild of Chris Ball. He found a
face painter who turned his guests into zany
pups (along with a scruffy alley cat party
crasher). Waiter Yolie Haramia added a
touch of glamour to the assortment of mixed
breeds in her sexy pink poodle outfit. The
table itself was a replica of the backroom
poker table, complete with Tiffany lamp, dog
dishes (instead of plates), Milk Bones, poker
chips and giant playing cards.
The annual February event joins other creative fundraisers that have contributed to the
support of the Senior Center in the past. One
such endeavor was the annual fine wine auction and luncheon that was tirelessly promoted for over 15 years by Le Chene restaurant
owner Juan Alonso, cohort Michel Delcros,
and former SCV Mayor Jo Anne Darcy. The
trio spent thousands of hours organizing
volunteers and collecting vintage brands for
the wine-lovers in our valley. They later lent
their services to the Celebrity Waiter dinner
when it took center stage in fundraising in
the 2000s. Michel has collected a roomful of
“Stanley Awards” (named for hard-working
Senior Center volunteer and 1993 Man of
the Year Stanley Sierad) for consistently
bringing in the most tip money at the annual
Celebrity Waiter events.
hat could Hunting, Dogs Playing Poker,
and Let’s Make a Deal possibly have in
common? If you were at the Celebrity Waiter
Dinner Saturday, Feb. 27, you’d know that
they were prize-winning tables at the event.
This year’s theme for the Senior Center fundraiser was “Fun & Games,” and revelers
took their creativity to a high level as they
decorated their tables and donned matching
costumes to portray their favorite “games.”
The Hyatt Regency Valencia Hotel’s ballroom also sported baseball players, bowlers, and gridiron stars, who mingled with
characters out of games like Operation,
Super Mario, and Monopoly – all to raise
a little mischief and a lot of money for the
SCV Senior Center. The infectious beats of
The SoundWaves band kept the dance floor
crowded while “celebrity” waiters handed
out knives, forks, plates and drinking glasses
for “tips” (scrip purchased at guest registration). Event Sponsor Miles McNamara of
Comfort Keepers, along with table sponsors
and tip monies, provided valuable income,
but the big money action happened at the
evening’s live auction. Working with auction co-chairs, Lauren McGuire and Miriam
Robles, the event committee rounded up
plane trips, cruises, theater and dining packages, and private parties for emcee Bill Lively
and auctioneer Curt Waite to sell to the highest bidders.
Fun & Games co-chairs Brian Koegle and
Vanessa Wilk added another fund-raising
element to the event – a video vignette (starring some of the Senior Center’s clients) that
dramatized the sorry state of the agency’s deteriorating buses – a vital component to the
agency’s meals-on-wheels and recreational
activities. Inspired guests pledged extra monies for transportation repairs and upkeep.
As an SCV fundraiser, the Celebrity Waiter
event has had a varied past. It had a run in the
1970s and 80s as an American Heart Association
benefit, functioning as both a luncheon and dinner
event. As the popularity of the event grew, venues
had to be switched from the local Ranch House
Inn banquet room to “over the hill” facilities like
the Odyssey Restaurant and Knollwood Country
Club.
At the turn of the New Century, the Santa Clarita
Valley Committee on Aging committee, under
the leadership of Erica Betts and Rick Patterson,
adopted the Celebrity Waiter as its own. Again,
as the event grew in numbers, the venue graduated
from the Valencia Country Club to the Robinson
Ranch Clubhouse before finding its current home
at the Hyatt Regency.
With each year, growth has brought new
volunteers on board. But it’s still possible to
spot a few of those from the early days and
to remember some who are here in spirit
– volunteers like Jerry and Betty Oldfield,
Greg Nutter, Glenn and Mindy Stuart, Gigi
Bost, Pat Willett, Bob and Kathy Kellar, Pat
Warford, Sheldon and Pat Allen, Bob Wagstrom, George Pederson, Marsha McLean,
Bob and Darlene Lyons, Mary Jane Hartman, Tom and Joyce Rodgers, Tracy Hauser,
and Leslie Berra.
F
ar more than just a runway show, Sunday’s fundraising
luncheon at the Hyatt includes a boutique, couture collections, $12,000 in silent auction items, and even a male model
competition.
There are still some tickets available to the 6th Annual Soroptimist International of Greater Santa Clarita Valley’s “Fashion
in Bloom” show on Sunday, March 20, 2016. Collections
from Macy’s, Banana Republic, White House/Black market
and Cobblestone Cottage will be represented on the runway.
Male models, who have already begun a fundraising competition on the SIGSCV’s website, will sport collections from
Roger Dunn, J. David’s Custom Clothiers and TPC Valencia.
A boutique will take place beginning at 10 a.m., which is
open to the public, including individuals without tickets to the
fundraising luncheon. Vendors include Gourmet Blends, Art
Couture Boutique, Sassy Cheek, Soulmate Sandals, EMBE
Jewelry, Pretty on Me and Via Tucci.
To obtain tickets or cast a $5 vote for one of the male models,

How to Instantly Cut
Your IRS Debt in Half
By Ray J. Bulaon, ESQ
I
t may sound too good to be true …
but there are facts about IRS penalties that can cut the taxes you owe
the government.
Did you know that penalties can
add up to 65 percent of your IRS tax
bill? That’s right—the combination
of late filing penalties, late payment
penalties, and failure to pay penalties can painfully add up to
more than half of your entire IRS liability.
Isn’t this outrageous? The IRS is just so good at kicking you
while you’re already down. How do they expect you to pay
these penalties when you can’t even pay the original liability
to begin with? This doesn’t make any sense, but they will tell
you that the law is the law and there’s simply nothing you can
do about it.
Fortunately, if your back tax liability is more than two years
old, then you have already hit the maximum on these three
particular penalties. However, it also means that more than
half of your IRS bill is penalties.
In IRS lingo, eliminating penalties is called “Penalty Abatement.” The process is fairly straightforward, but the IRS has
very strict guidelines when reviewing an application. Here are
sample questions that should be given consideration before
applying:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Were any financial records lost or destroyed?
Were there any circumstances that led to a substantial
drop in income?
Did you rely on the advice of a CPA or the IRS in
making tax decisions?
Were there any circumstances that created a substantial financial hardship to the point where you or your
business were close to going bankrupt?
If you are more than 10K in debt to the IRS, you can get a
free consultation with the office of Ray J. Bulaon. Call 661-9644493 to schedule an appointment.

California Self-Defense Laws
O
n Friday, March 11, Santa Clarita Sheriff ’s Station deputies responded
to a call involving the shooting death of an alleged intruder at a Canyon
Country apartment complex. According to witnesses, the suspect was lurking
about outside the window to an apartment. The witnesses heard the resident
shouting multiple times at the would-be intruder, telling him to leave because
he didn’t live there.
Despite the resident’s pleas, the suspect shattered a window and began to climb
through, when five to seven gunshots rang out and struck the attacker several
times. Once deputies arrived, they discovered the suspect suffering multiple
gunshot wounds and transported him to the hospital, where he later died.
A handgun discovered at the scene was taken into evidence, and the resident
was taken to the Santa Clarita Sheriff ’s Station pending further investigation.
It’s unknown at this time whether or not the resident is going to be charged
with a crime, but if he is, it’s possible that he may be able to claim self-defense.
California self-defense laws make it impossible to be found guilty of a violent
crime, provided that crime was committed in an effort to protect yourself, and
that the force used was reasonable at the time. For force to be deemed “reasonable,” an individual must:
•
Have reason to believe they were in imminent danger of being
killed, injured, or otherwise touched unlawfully
•
Reasonably believe that they had to use force to prevent it
•
Have used no more force than was necessary to prevent it from happening
A Sand Canyon couple – an unemployed
43-year-old woman and a self-employed
43-year-old man – were charged with
manufacturing a controlled substance.
A 52-year-old student from Valencia
was cited for a DUI of any drug, and a
55-year-old warehouse manager from
Winnetka was charged with a DUI of
combined drug and alcohol influence.
An example in which self-defense may not come into play would be one in
which an individual threatens to slap a victim, makes a move to do so, and the
victim responds by pulling a gun and shooting their aggressor. While the victim
in this example likely believed that they were in imminent danger and believed
they needed to use force to prevent it, shooting someone to avoid being slapped
is excessive. As such, the victim may find himself being charged with murder.
It’s important to note that self-defense requires that someone be in imminent
danger to be used. That means that they are under immediate threat, and selfdefense cannot be argued if the danger was to occur sometime in the future, no
matter how credible a threat it may be.
California’s self-defense law extends to cover not only a person who acts
violently to defend himself/herself, but one who does so to defend others as well.
The same criteria listed above are necessary for someone to be able to claim the
defense of others.
Only time will tell if the individual involved in the Canyon Country shooting
will be charged or not. As of the writing of this article, the investigation is still
ongoing.

A 25-year-old roofer from Sylmar was cited for carrying a switchblade knife upon
his person. And a 38-year-old tender from
La Puente, Calif. was picked up for illegal
possession of ammunition.
A 19-year-old Sylmar man who works
in flooring was picked up for possession
of a blank check/attempt to defraud. A
40-year-old distributor from Valencia was
arrested for obtaining money by false
pretenses.
A 36-year-old Santa Clarita electrician
was charged with taking a vehicle without
the owner’s consent. An unemployed
31-year-old Valencia woman was charged
with theft of personal property.
DUIs with prior arrests included:
61-year-old software engineer from Stevenson Ranch
38-year-old owner from Palmdale
40-year-old lender from Valencia
21-year-old cook from Los Angeles
23-year-old mechanic from Van Nuys
51-year-old cashier from Lancaster
A 47-year-old Santa Clarita electrician
was arrested for battery against a former
spouse. And an 18-year-old laborer from
Carson was picked up for battery on a
peace officer. An unemployed 23-year-old
Fresno man was charged with battery on
a non-cohabitating former spouse.
by Robin Sandoval
For example, if a person pulls out a knife and attempts to mug someone, and
the victim takes out a gun and shoots the mugger, California’s self-defense law
may make it so that the victim is not guilty of committing murder.

In a not-too-surprising twist, a charge of
unlawfully planting/cultivating marijuana
went to a gardener, a 41-year-old Las

23-year-old Newhall man – was picked up
for possession of a controlled substance.

In Loving Memory
Eusebio “Chevy” Javier Basulto
1953-2016
Eusebio “Chevy” Javier Basulto passed away unexpectedly following a sudden
illness on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at the age of 62. Chevy was the only son
and youngest child born to Theodora and Eusebio Basulto on October 5, 1953
in San Fernando, California.
Chevy grew up alongside his sisters, Sarah Basulto-Evans and Frances Shupe,
in the cities of San Fernando and Sylmar, California. He always remained very
proud of his hometown. Chevy attended San Fernando Elementary School,
Olive Vista Middle School, and later graduated from Sylmar High School in
1972.
When Chevy was 20 years old, he followed his family’s history of military
tradition by enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served with great pride as a Hercules Missile crewman in Military Intelligence with MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) Unit 406 ASA from 1974 to 1976, where he achieved the rank
of specialist, fourth class. He served overseas in Germany and received the
National Defense Service Medal and Letters of Appreciation. Chevy was very
proud of his service to his country, and considered his military service to be
one of his greatest accomplishments.
Chevy was an accomplished baseball player who began playing as a pitcher for
the Sylmar Independent Baseball League. He was recognized for pitching a
no-hitter at the age of 12. Chevy would continue his pitching career at Sylmar
High School.
Chevy was a very active child. His mother kept him busy with baseball, and
also with what would become his second love – bowling. Every week he was
bowling in the junior leagues. He became quite an accomplished bowler, with
a 236 average. Although his family members weren’t accomplished bowlers,
Chevy would ask his family to join his team at Woodlake Bowling in Woodland Hills. He wanted his family to spend time together. Chevy was frequently
invited to play in countless tournaments and won many bowling awards. He
made many good friends and spent some of the best days of his life bowling.
Chevy loved the Dodgers,
UCLA, and his Sylmar Spartans. He enjoyed indulging in
his love of classic TV shows
like “Mork and Mindy” and
“The Honeymooners.” He
also never missed “The Big
Bang Theory.”
After he was discharged from
the Army, Chevy worked a
short time at Garrett Aerospace and Rantec Anechoic.
but he found his place at
ACUSON, which later
became 3M. Chevy initially
worked as a technician and
later became the surface preparation “guru.” He was an incredibly special and
important member of the 3M family.
Chevy is survived by: his sister, Sarah Basulto-Evans, and her husband, Floyd
Evans; his sister, Frances Shupe, and her husband, Kent Shupe; his nieces,
Jennifer Vo, Tara Manly, Amanda Evans and Victoria Shupe; his nephews,

Approximately one year, he is good
with other dogs of all sizes and kids,
not sure about cats. Due to the
unfortunate bad rap and misuse of

experience is required to adopt
Nestle. We are patient in finding the
right homes for our beloved dogs and
serious about protecting the breed,
Nestle will not be adopted to a first
time bully breed owner.
Leo - 1 - 1.5 yr old male terrier, can be a bit shy
until he gets to know you but once he knows
he's safe he's a big affectionate baby! He's a
typical Terrier; friendly with other friendly dogs
but can be fiesty, tenacious, energetic, stubborn
and bossy at times but very smart, loving and
loyal. Because of his shy tendencies a loud
busy home would not be ideal. A home with an
experienced handler and/or someone with
knowledge of behavior modification is going to
be idea for him.
Nestle is neutered, current on
vaccinations and mircochiped.
He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations,
microchipped and crate trained.
