season programme - Grand Opera House
SEASON PROGRAMME
Autumn – Winter 2015
Welcome
It gives me great pleasure to
welcome you to a new season
at the Grand Opera House and
I look forward to sharing our
Autumn-Winter brochure with
you, which showcases the best
in entertainment from the West
End and across the UK and Ireland as well as our
fantastic local talent.
In a year that has been particularly challenging across
the entire Arts sector in Northern Ireland, the Grand
Opera House has continued to deliver a wide and diverse
programme appealing to audiences of all ages and
interests. Among the many highlights of 2015 so far is The
King’s Speech. Not only were we delighted to welcome
Jason Donovan and the superb cast, but also awardwinning writer, David Seidler. Easter saw us produce a
special concert with The Priests featuring the Cappella
Caeciliana Choir and, just before summer, we saw a week
of packed performances at Mel Brooks’ hilarious musical
comedy, The Producers.
Yeeha I’ll Tell Me Ma!
Sing-a-long-a Dirty Dancing
Now, as we look ahead to the autumn and into 2016,
we are delighted to bring you some of the best in musical
theatre with the West End smash-hit, The Bodyguard
and a fantastic new stage version of the family classic,
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. We’re also delighted to welcome
back the esteemed National Theatre with their multi
award-winning production of The Curious Incident of
the Dog in the Night-time. Our own NI Opera returns as
do Birmingham Royal Ballet and Scottish Opera with
their versions of Turandot, Swan Lake and The Mikado
respectively.
In the coming months we will continue with preparations
for our 125 year celebrations in 2020. As always, your
expectations, comfort and enjoyment as customers
are our main priority and we will continue to strive to
enhance your theatre experience so that you return again
and again to enjoy all that the Grand Opera House has
to offer.
Mary-Clare Deane Chief Executive
A word from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland
As the Grand Opera House celebrates its 120th
anniversary year, we are reminded how many
legendary acts have graced this famous
stage. To this day it remains at the heart of the
performing arts in Northern Ireland, providing
audiences with the greatest possible choice
of leading local and international performances, from
Northern Ireland Opera to the Big West End shows, and
everything else in between. Yearly audiences of over
260,000 and regularly packed houses are proof that the
Opera House has lost none of its special touch.
Sing-a-long-a Frozen
The Arts Council invests public money in the Opera
House, and with that money comes a responsibility
to ensure that the opportunity to access performances
is more widely available to everyone. I want to
acknowledge the commitment it is making to developing
its access, education and outreach programmes. That
work will ensure that the Grand Opera House retains
its exalted position as Northern Ireland’s most popular
historical theatre.

divides their two communities, but what will his
family and friends think? With music from the
'60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s and '10s, the show has
something for all the family. Performed by a
cast of people with a disability, it features special
guests, the Motown Brothers and St Louise’s
School Choir and is part-funded by DSD, BHSCT
and the Garfield Foundation.
A full screening of Disney’s Frozen with lyrics on

Part of the Ulster Bank Belfast International Arts Festival,
The Kitchen is as far from any TV cooking show as you can get.
It’s cooking on a whole other level: cooking as a metaphor for life.
The UK and Ireland premiere of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot is
co-produced by the State Theatre of Nuremberg, Théâtre du
Capitole de Toulouse and NI Opera.
A unique theatrical experience, The Kitchen serves up a ritual fusion of sight,
sound, smell and taste all the way from Southern India. On stage a couple
enact a drama without words, stirring huge steamy vats of payasam, a
traditional Indian dessert. Behind them, under coppery light, 12 drummers
beat out a surging rhythm on their sacred mizhavu drums while the
fragrance of aromatic rice wafts through the theatre. This mesmerising mix
delights all the senses – especially taste – as the payasam is passed around
for sharing afterwards.
Award-winning Northern Ireland Opera presents a rare opportunity to see
Puccini’s final masterpiece, Turandot, fully staged in Northern Ireland in a
radical and provocative new production from internationally-acclaimed
director Calixto Bieito. Having previously worked to great acclaim with
English National Opera and with a new production soon to open at the
Met in New York, Bieito is a director with a worldwide reputation for
producing opera as spectacle. Featuring the aria Nessun Dorma, the Ulster
Orchestra and an international and Irish cast with the combined choral
forces of over 80 singers, this production of Turandot is sure to be
one of the most spectacular performances staged this year.
Audiences will be wowed with Indian director Roysten Abel’s
unconventional theatre in this immersive and hypnotic Festival Premiere.
By a moonlit lake, a grieving prince witnesses the
transformation of a swan into a beautiful princess. Compelled
by an evil spell to spend her days in the form of a bird, she
can only be saved by the power of love. Filled with exquisite
ensembles, lyrical pas de deux and bravura solos, Swan Lake
is an unforgettable experience.
Acknowledged by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest
productions of the ballet,” Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Swan
Lake is darkly atmospheric, romantic and beautiful.

When Frances Black and Kieran Goss announced

country stars who can claim to have made such
an impact in just over two years. Not only has
Derek’s 2015 concert tour sold out in venues across
the country, he recently took home the Entertainer

Sunday World Country Music Awards.
Having recently celebrated a fourth year on the
road with his band, Derek has toured all over
Ireland and the UK and recently achieved huge
success on his international tour to Australia.
A concert with Derek Ryan really is an
