Friday 30 October – Sunday 1 November Friday – Sunday 7.30pm: £18.00 – £46.00 H Part of the Ulster Bank Belfast International Arts Festival, The Kitchen is as far from any TV cooking show as you can get. It’s cooking on a whole other level: cooking as a metaphor for life. The UK and Ireland premiere of Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot is co-produced by the State Theatre of Nuremberg, Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse and NI Opera. A unique theatrical experience, The Kitchen serves up a ritual fusion of sight, sound, smell and taste all the way from Southern India. On stage a couple enact a drama without words, stirring huge steamy vats of payasam, a traditional Indian dessert. Behind them, under coppery light, 12 drummers beat out a surging rhythm on their sacred mizhavu drums while the fragrance of aromatic rice wafts through the theatre. This mesmerising mix delights all the senses – especially taste – as the payasam is passed around for sharing afterwards. Award-winning Northern Ireland Opera presents a rare opportunity to see Puccini’s final masterpiece, Turandot, fully staged in Northern Ireland in a radical and provocative new production from internationally-acclaimed director Calixto Bieito. Having previously worked to great acclaim with English National Opera and with a new production soon to open at the Met in New York, Bieito is a director with a worldwide reputation for producing opera as spectacle. Featuring the aria Nessun Dorma, the Ulster Orchestra and an international and Irish cast with the combined choral forces of over 80 singers, this production of Turandot is sure to be one of the most spectacular performances staged this year. Audiences will be wowed with Indian director Roysten Abel’s unconventional theatre in this immersive and hypnotic Festival Premiere. By a moonlit lake, a grieving prince witnesses the transformation of a swan into a beautiful princess. Compelled by an evil spell to spend her days in the form of a bird, she can only be saved by the power of love. Filled with exquisite ensembles, lyrical pas de deux and bravura solos, Swan Lake is an unforgettable experience. Acknowledged by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest productions of the ballet,” Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Swan Lake is darkly atmospheric, romantic and beautiful.
