We do research to understand how marine
ecosystems work and how they are affected by
human activities.
We are interested in direct effects like the exploitation of
resources and services, and indirect ones like climate
change.

Operational oceanography
We study hydrodynamic, sedimentary and contamination
processes using advanced technologies for measuring and
monitoring oceanographic variables in real time. To this we
add the use of statistics and simulation tools for analysing,

RED DE SEGUIMIENTO DEL ESTADO ECOLÓGICO DE LAS AGUAS DE
TRANSICIÓN Y COSTERAS DE LA COMUNIDAD AUTÓNOMA DEL PAÍS
VASCO (PRÓRROGA)
Realizado desde 1994 para la Agencia vasca del Agua (UR-AGENTZIA) del Gobierno Vasco
OBJETIVOS
Evaluar el estado ecológico y químico de las aguas costeras y de transición, identificando
tendencias, las principales presiones humanas y sus impactos y el efecto de las medidas
adoptadas para su mejora.
Este trabajo supone la implementación de la Directiva Marco del Agua (DMA) y también contribuye
al cumplimiento de la Directiva de la Estrategia Marina Europea, la base principal para la gestión del
medio acuático y del medio marino en Europa.

- Informes anuales del estado de las aguas costeras y de transición (libre acceso en Internet)
- Desarrollo de métodos de evaluación: AMBI, M-AMBI, AFI, etc. De uso oficial en Europa.
- Publicaciones científicas: desde 2000, más de 50 artículos científicos (SCI) publicados relacionados con la
DMA, que han recibido más de 1.500 citas. Numerosas contribuciones a simposios y congresos
internacionales
- Cursos en varios Master de postgrado (Universidad del País Vasco, de Catalunya y de Navarra).
Organización de cursos de verano sobre la DMA y temas relacionados
-Tres tesis doctorales realizadas y otras tres en curso
- Representación nacional (para el MMAMRM) en los grupos para la implementación de la DMA. Participación
en la Estrategia Nacional para la implementación de la DMA, coordinando varios elementos biológicos.
Participación en numerosos grupos de trabajo (ICES, OSPAR, etc.) relacionados con la DMA

LA IMPLEMENTACIÓN DE LA ESTRATEGIA MARINA EUROPEA
La DEME, aprobada en 2008, es la referencia legislativa fundamental para la gestión de los mares
europeos.
Desde AZTI-Tecnalia se están llevando a cabo trabajos para la implementación de la DEME y para el
buen posicionamiento del País Vasco en este ámbito:
- Campañas en la mar para la toma de datos, muestras y análisis de los descriptores ecológicos
de la DEME
-Participación en grupos de trabajo para la implementación de la DEME (grupos para la
definición del buen estado ecológico)
- Publicaciones científicas, congresos, cursos, etc.

Asesoría Científica para la gestión de la anchoa del Golfo de Vizcaya
Realizado desde 1985 para la Dirección de Pesca del Gobierno Vasco
OBJETIVOS
1. Evaluación integral de los pequeños y medianos pelágicos: anchoa, sardina, verdel y
chicharros.
2. Colaboración en la formulación del Consejo Científico de gestión de los pequeños y medianos
pelágicos
3. Colaboración con la Comisión en la revisión de la gestión de la anchoa y colaboración con el
ICES en la formulación del consejo de gestión.
4. Planteamiento de un sistema de gestión de la anchoa a largo plazo
5. Mantener informados y asesorar a la Administración y al Sector Pesquero sobre el estado de
las pesquerías y poblaciones de peces pelágicos explotados.
6. Realizar estudios sobre su pesca y biología para contribuir a la comprensión de la dinámica de
estos recursos pelágicos.

IN THE OPEN OCEAN;

OBJECTIVES
 To Assess the potential of developing a new type of regional economic activity based
on open ocean shellfish culture - using sustainable aquaculture technologies and
promoting the diversification - of the business activities of the local fishing, maritime and
seafood sectors.

identify and select FEASIBLE OFFSHORE TECHNOLOGIES of
shellfish production for the environmental coastal conditions of the Basque
Country
 To understand the TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS of implementing a new
type of economic activity within the local marine and seafood sectors.
To select suitable OPEN OCEAN PRODUCTION SITES in consensus with
the National/Regional Normative Developments and the ICZM scenarios.
 To prototype and validate OPERATIONAL SYSTEMS and SUSTAINABLE
