No 71 Edition NEWSLETTER Winter 2016 STORMERS FUNDRAISING DINNER On Thursday 21 April, we hosted the 13th Annual KGC/DHL Stormers Fundraising Dinner with the DHL Stormers to raise funds for the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund. During the evening a Q&A session with our General Manager, Danie Appel; Head Coach, Robbie Fleck; Schalk Burger Jr; Siya Kolisi and Nic Groom left the guests entertained. After a fabulous evening of wining and dining, the Stormers returned to action with another home Saturday game against the Reds. The end result was a super 40 - 22 win. Events leading up to the dinner included the annual KG Bowlers Hamilton/Villagers Day, and our Club Luncheon in April, with guest speaker Theuns Stofberg (captain of the Springboks for four tests between 1980 and 1984). Generous proceeds were raised and donated during these two events, totalling R13 000. DHL and all our other sponsors contributed great auction and Lucky Draw prizes for the night, and at the end of the evening, we managed to hand over a cheque of R106 538 to Gail Baerecke, General Manager of the Players’ Fund. Over and above this incredible achievement, a staggering total of R781 000 has been raised at these evenings for the Players' Fund. We would like to thank all our members, guests and sponsors, who contributed towards this very worthy cause and who made the evening a huge success! We deeply appreciate the willingness with which you have and continue to sponsor our efforts in support of our chosen charity. The Players’ Fund would not have been able to achieve the level of assistance that they provide to injured rugby players without your support. EDITOR’S NOTE Dear members and possible future members, I would like to take this opportunity to remind all our members that the Club’s 91st Annual General Meeting will be held in the Ballroom on Monday, 6 June 2016, starting promptly at 18:00. All members are encouraged to attend. Members will be requested to present their valid membership card to gain entry to the meeting. We have had a fantastic past season at Kelvin and as we go into the cold wintery months, Club management has prepared some heart and soul warming special offers and events to cater for all. Have a look at the “What’s On @ Kelvin Grove Club” section. A FEW NOTES TO HIGHLIGHT: • Annual subscriptions were due by the end of March 2016 and we thank all our members who have settled their accounts timeously. For those that have not yet made payment, kindly contact the accounts department on (021) 658 4503 to make the necessary arrangements. Late subscription payments will result in a late payment fee. • The resignation deadline each year is at the end of February. It is the same every year and we have a strict policy as per the rules and bye-laws of the Club enforced by the members that NO resignation will be accepted thereafter. No exceptions will be made to this ruling. If resignations are sent through after the deadline, members will be liable for payment of their subscription for the coming year. • Please note the following ruling for member’s guests and children at the Club: MEMBER’S GUESTS RESTAURANTS All outlets once a month per guest and once a week per guest at the Barn. SPORTING FACILITIES Once a month per guest. CHILDREN (UNDER THE AGE OF 12) RESTAURANTS The Barn and Waterside Restaurants once a week when accompanying an adult. POOL AREA Weekends, school and public holidays and must be accompanied by an adult. Under no circumstances are children under the age of 18 allowed in the Pool Bar area or at the bench area in front of the pool. It is strictly prohibited due to the current liquor law. Please ensure that all guests are signed in by the member that they are accompanying. Visit our website and like us on Facebook to stay up to date with competitions and what is happening at the Club. Thank you for your continued support at Kelvin, stay dry and warm and enjoy the very much needed rain. KAYLEIGH BASSETT 1 CHAIRMAN’S COLUMN The year always seems to accelerate once the Easter weekend is over and, for the first time in many years, the start of our winter rains and the Easter weekend coincided. We have enjoyed some very welcome rain but anyone seeing the state of the Steenbras Dam at the top of Sir Lowry`s Pass will realise that we need a lot of rain in the catchment areas before our water position in the Western Cape improves. For the next few months the sporting entertainment focus at the Club revolves around rugby. The 2016 Super Rugby Tournament is well underway and although the new format may not be fully understood, Newlands remains well supported and, depending on the time of the match, the Club is a popular meeting point for members and their guests before and after the game. We look forward to hosting some Irish guests when South Africa take on Ireland in June. Many of our members have had dealings with Serena Beddy at our front desk either in person or, on the telephone over the years but may not be aware that she took desperately ill late last year. Danie Appel and his team organised a most enjoyable dinner that was well supported by members and, attended by Serena and members of her family. The proceeds will, in a small way, assist with medical costs but members wishing to make a contribution can still do so at Reception. Our Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund Stormers fundraising dinner has been a popular annual event for a number of years now. More than R100 000 was raised this year at a very well organised function enjoyed by all who attended and we hope to reach a seven figure contribution before the next Rugby World Cup. At this time of the year, an inordinate amount of effort is required by management in following up late annual Club subscription payments. Defaulters will, however, experience the inconvenience of cards that do not function at the gate, so please ensure that your payment has been confirmed. Our financial year has ended very positively and those details will be available in the Club`s Annual Report shortly. The Club’s AGM takes place early in June and due notice of the date, time and venue will be given to members. Remember that your Club is open on those cold and rainy winter days and that there will always be something enjoyable on the menu and possibly a surprise like a curry! Your support and constructive criticism remains a vital part of our vibrant Club. JON EAGAR CLUB CHAIRMAN 2 CLUB VALUES In our Autumn Newsletter edition we introduced one of our five Club Values - Appreciation. In this edition we are focusing on Accountability and its value and importance. YOU STEADILY GROW INTO BECOMING YOUR BEST AS YOU CHOOSE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE AND ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR IMPROVEMENT. ― STEVE SHALLENBERGER ACCOUNTABILITY We develop a culture between members, committee and staff, of being responsible, answerable or accountable for something within their power and/or control, while being transparent. IN OUR BEHAVIOUR WE • Take responsibility for all our actions. • Make suggestions for improvements. CHEF’S CHOICE OSSO BUCO Winter weather has arrived and to kick off the rainy season we put this dish on the specials board in the Barn restaurant. It was sold out on the first evening and our members loved it! To avoid missing out we’ve decided to share the recipe so that you can make it at home. Don’t forget the gremolada as this adds a lovely fresh lift to any stew. Use it on ox tail, bredie or chicken. INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • 2 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 2.5 kg veal or beef shanks cut into 1cm slices 1 cup flour 2 medium onions, coarsely chopped 1 large carrot, coarsely chopped 1 medium celery stalk, coarsely chopped 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1⁄2 teaspoon marjoram • 1⁄2 teaspoon basil • 1⁄2 teaspoon thyme • 1 small can peeled Italian tomatoes, drained and coarsely chopped • 2 1⁄2 tablespoons tomato paste • 2 cups dry white wine • 1 cup chicken stock • 1 large bay leaf • 4 sprigs parsley GREMOLADA • 1⁄2 cup minced parsley • 3 medium garlic cloves, minced • 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest DIRECTIONS • In a large flameproof casserole, melt the butter in the oil over moderate heat. • Dredge the veal in the flour and shake off any excess. Working in batches, sauté veal on all sides until golden brown. Do not crowd the pan. Remove to a bowl. • Add the onions, carrots, celery and garlic. Cover and cook until vegetables are tender, about 15 minutes. • Place the veal on top of the vegetables, making sure the bones are upright. Sprinkle the marjoram, basil and thyme on top. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste, and white wine, chicken stock, strips of lemon zest, bay leaf and parsley sprigs. If necessary, add enough water to cover the shanks. • Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, until the meat is tender, about 2 hours. • Transfer the veal shanks to a heated platter and cover with foil to keep warm. Increase the heat to high and boil, stirring frequently until the sauce is reduced by half, about 20 minutes. Pour the sauce over the meat. • Just before serving, combine the parsley, garlic and lemon zest to make the gremolada. • Sprinkle over the top of the Osso Buco. 3 STORMERS DINNER 4 GUEST SPEAKERS GUEST SPEAKER: BERNADINE DOUGLAS THURSDAY, 23 JUNE 2016 TIME: 07:00 PROMPTLY Bernadine Douglas is the founder of the Slender Slim 4 U Banting Clinics group. Both teams finished in the middle of the final log. At times we struggled to fill the teams due to injuries and other commitments, so any player over the age of 50 who is interested in some competitive tennis, please give me a call at 082 460 1234. The next league competition will be starting in September, but there will be tennis practice on Wednesdays and Saturdays - for details, give me a call. Social tennis for new and current members will be every Sunday from 9:00 for players at all levels, for details call Craig Strang at 082 573 4426. KARL PITTERMANN GOLF 2016 seems to be in full flight with our KG golfers enjoying the dry weather thus far, but we do hope for some really good rain or we might be playing on oiled greens! Thanks to Paul D and Tom H who have picked up running the bookings – appreciated. I’ve been away for a wee journey in Vietnam and Cambodia – and I assure you SA is in pretty good shape. Their road users are craftsmen and they drive / ride like saints – avoiding accidents and promoting smooth traffic flow. Motor cycles in the cities are 50% of the people population and they make it work without rules or rage. Looked in at Montgomerie Links outside Danang… Around R3 000 for 18 holes but does include a cart! So SA is looking really attractive. Looking forward to the continuing support as always. Danie is working on a Kelvin golf shirt which will be very uniting. And yessssssssssss – MAYPD GEOFF CLARK BRIDGE Being a friendly Bridge Club, we hope any Kelvin members thinking of starting bridge again or wanting to meet a new group of players, will consider coming to one of our Monday or Friday afternoon games in the Library. We have a system of cutting out after every six deals thus enabling you to move on to a new table and to meet a different group of people. You are welcome to join us between 13:30 – 17:00. Snacks and drinks can be obtained quickly from the nearby coffee shop/ lounge. We play mainly Contract Bridge but are amenable to BONE by agreement of each table as many of us prefer that. We play for wickedly high stakes and the most I have lost in an afternoon is R1.50, so you have nothing to fear. We look forward to seeing you this year. For more information on bridge, contact Daphne Hawkins on 021 686 7991 or 072 358 4280. DAPHNE HAWKINS 11 SQUASH League resumes this week for all four Masters, and three men’s and ladies’ leagues. Results have been mixed but we are pleased with the spirit in which the matches are played. I am delighted to announce that Derek Becker was the Western Province over 70s champion. Unfortunately due to the timing of the tournament, it attracted very few entrants, otherwise I am sure Kelvin would have had some other winners! Athlee Mclear, our club captain, still continues to attract new players to her Tuesday school and if anyone else is interested please contact me. Keep enjoying your squash.
