Leslie has owned Dobermans since 1977, and earned her first AKC obedience title (Companion Dog) on her first pet bitch, Moonlight Vixen, in 1983. Since that time, Leslie has titled multiple dogs in multiple venues. After almost 40 years of owning, training and competing with Dobermans, Leslie bred her first litter in 2013 with the incomparable UDC CH Morgana’s Irresistible Treasure, CD, D-CD, IPO3, BSA-VG2A, VC, WAC (Penny) as her foundation bitch. Summer 2016 • UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 3 From the UDC President Leslie Carpenter • [email protected] A s I compose my first president’s message to you, the Fourth of July is just around the corner. It seems like there is plenty of time for training before the fall competition season begins, but before you know it, the fall trial season will be here! When you consider your fall competition commitments, please remember the annual UDC Fall Classic IPO Trial, scheduled for Oct. 14-15, 2016, in St. Charles, Ill. This national-level IPO championship is held in conjunction with the Doberman Pinscher Club of America national specialty show. This makes it a great tool to showcase our working Dobermans to the larger United States Doberman community. Watch for updates at http://uniteddobermanclub.com/2016fallclassic/. The UDC national is always a wonderful time to revisit old friendships and acquaintances, and to meet new Doberman enthusiasts, and the 2016 UDC National Specialty was no different. The previous UDC Board acted as host for the event, and they did a super job of planning the event down to the smallest detail. Hats off to this team of dedicated UDC members! The Medina County Fairgrounds was a great location for our conformation and obedience events. The IPO Championship was held at the beautiful grounds of the O.G. Buckeye Club. Our judges were cordial and helpful, and the events ran on a pretty tight schedule. As usual during the UDC National, the weather was all over the temperature scale, but thankfully we had no severe weather threats this year! If you have never attended a UDC National, I urge you to set aside a week in April to do so. While meeting people and chatting over social media is a lot of fun, it just doesn’t compare to sharing meals, drinks, dogs and stories with other Doberman-crazy people! 2017 is heading our way quickly, and along with it comes next year's national. Stay tuned for updates about planning progress via our website, the official UDC email list, and through official Zooza announcements. The Mission of the United Doberman Club to preserve, protect and promote the working qualities of our breed is achieved because our members care enough to volunteer their time to put on events, to form member clubs and to mentor new members. You would be surprised at what types of skill sets we need to keep the UDC running smoothly. We need newcomers to our group to step up and learn the ropes. The UDC is only as strong as its member base, and it will continue to thrive only if its members commit to making it so. If you have even thought about helping out, please take the next step and contact me directly. I'm sure we can find a task or a project that you will be comfortable with! O Mission Statement of The United Doberman Club The United Doberman Club, or UDC (www.uniteddobermanclub.com), is made up of Doberman enthusiasts dedicated to preserving and protecting the Doberman and its heritage as a working dog. UDC is advancing the interests of the breed by educating members about working ability, conformation, temperament, health, breeding, training and maintenance of the total Doberman, sound in mind and body. The UDC encourages its members to participate in a variety of activities for which the Doberman is suited, including Agility, Conformation, Drill Team, Guide Dog, Obedience, Ring Sports, IPO, Search & Rescue and Therapy. 4 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus • Summer 2016 From the Focus Editor Steve Stout • [email protected] G reetings everyone! I’m honored to be allowed to serve as editor of the UDC Focus. While all UDC members have varying levels of experience and participation in dog sports, we all have a tremendous admiration and love for these dogs. My first pleasure of owning Doberman, which was in 1994, was Nicki. I didn't know much about breeding or any Doberman owners, so in a sense I was somewhat lucky. She was of purely American breeding, and most of what I’d known came from reading books and articles. I lost my first dog in 1993, a mixed breed named Jesse, who passed at 13 years from melanoma. I took a year doing research because I decided I wanted to get a purebred dog that would be as good a companion as Jesse had been. I had a list of about 10 breeds, and when it finally got down to two, I chose Dobes, in part because of their short coats, and especially because of their incredible natural beauty and intelligence. Over the years I met breeders, acquired Europeans lines from imported dams and studs, and learned more about training, breeding and Dobes. My competition has been in AKC, though I did get a BH on Zoe a few years ago. Considering how naive I was in ’94, I'm amazed at what I’ve learned from my dogs as well as humans. With a very low working drive, Nicki still managed to get her CD, and lived to 10. When I found Dobes from strong working lines, it was amazing and joyous for me. Through working Doberman owners, I discovered and joined the UDC about 10 years ago. I love UDC, and I enjoy tracking and protection, but most of my work has been in obedience. I’ve been fortunate to experience UDC events, mostly in Kentucky, and several with the Working Dobermans of Kentucky. It was in Winchester that Zoe got her BH in spite of my novice handling. I’m also a complete and total novice at editing, but I pledge to give my best effort, and Linda has been tutoring me. Best wishes to all. O Photo by Anne Lincoln Next Focus Deadline: Nov. 1 — The Print Issue! 6 uniteddobermanclub.com UDC Focus • Summer 2016 I would like to introduce everyone to Swift Run Magic Man, call name Ruger, who is already proving to be an outstanding Dobe pup. He is the newest puppy to be donated through the UDC Puppy Project, donated by Tammy Marshall Weldon with Swift Run Dobermans. With the assistance of Pam S. Burns and Irene Korotev, the pups were all tested for potential to do Live Wilderness/ Disaster SAR work. I was very excited to get Ruger home and get him started on his new journey into the SAR world. Photo by Bill Morrow. Ruger started his first week working on surface exposure, socialization skills and engaging his senses in all sorts of new environments. He just completed his second demo with our SAR unit with more than 400 curious Boy Scouts, and, of course, was the “star” of the show. Always looking for a new adventure, Ruger’s nose does not let him miss anything, and this is proving to be a great asset for SAR work. I would like to thank Tammy Marshall Weldon for her utmost generosity and to those in the UDC who are supporters of the Puppy Project and the importance of the Doberman in the SAR world. If it wasn’t hard everyone would do it. The hard ... is what makes it great.” I have never heard truer words spoken then by Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own. It IS the hard that makes it great. There is not one day of training when I’m not amazed at the complexity of the sport, and then even more, so amazed to watch our progress in it. I have competed in agility, competition obedience, rally, and barn hunt. And I value every single lesson I learned about dog training and dogs in general from participating in those sports. They, in their own right, bring a whole new set of complex rules and skills that take a sure and competent trainer. But when I stepped onto the IPO training field a year ago with my new puppy, I knew immediately this is what I wanted to do. That want came from a deeper sense, from want to NEED. I NEED to do this. I have always been enamored with the sport. I put a BH on my old girl eight years ago. But the stars had not aligned correctly for me, and after a bad experience with a club, I wrote it off as lessons learned. During my time away from the sport, I watched and admired the beauty that comes from a team so in sync with each other, a bond that is built on trust and respect, through consistent expectations. 10 uniteddobermanclub.com Week after week we drive to training, and spend the days training, laughing and talking about dogs. There are good days. You all know those days, when you leave and say to yourself, “Watch out world, because we are coming at you like a freight train.” And there are the other days when you leave saying, “We are never going to be able to do this.” It’s during the ups and downs of training when you really start to learn. When things go bad, you simply take those lessons, learn from them and move on to the next day. I will tell you the feeling you get when your dog offers those first few steps of head-up, attention-filled, high-energy heeling; the track he completes slowly, methodically and indicates that article without your help; and the time your dog is in the blind and you are able to call him out and into heel with just one command. It is like no other feeling. But it is the hard that makes it great: Waking up before the sun to go out and lay a track. Driving almost two hours each way to training. The bites from poor targeting. All the scrapes, bruises and busted lips. Every ounce of money and energy spent pursuing this sport. Yeah it’s worth it. Everyone has to have that one thing that makes them feel UDC Focus • Summer 2016 alive, that one thing that gets inside you and lights you up. For me it’s the sport of IPO. During this short time in starting, I’ve come up with a few guidelines for myself, and believe me, I do have to remind myself of these guidelines pretty frequently. I think that anyone starting out may have the same mental hurdles to overcome. They are: • Take your time and lay a great foundation. This is so important! A good foundation is key. Don’t rush ahead to get to all the flash and the “fun” of the sport. By taking the time to teach things (and learn yourself) correctly and consistently, you will save yourself headaches in the future by not having to fix things. • It’s your journey — no one else matters. It’s very easy to get caught up what others are doing and to compare yourself to them. But every dog is different, every handler is different. The moment you let go of comparing yourself to others is the moment you will start to really progress. • Be clear, consistent and fair. • If something is not working, STOP! Step back and try to figure out why. What is the root of issue? And work to fix that. If you find yourself getting frustrated and angry with your dog, just stop. Readjust your attitude and come back to it later. • Play, play and more play. Develop your dog’s love to play and engage in all kinds of environments. It doesn’t matter what skills your dog has if he can’t focus on you in all different environments. • Watch and learn. Club training is great, there is a variety of people who share a common interest. So time goes by quickly chatting it up. But when there is a dog on the field, I’m close by to watch what they are doing and what the trainer is telling them. I’ll catch up with club members while the next dog is on its way to the field. But watching others and listening to the coaching is very valuable. Even if, at the time, what is going on doesn’t apply to you, it may in the future. • Find a wonderful well-respected club to join. I found my trainer when that person was highly recommended to me by another IPO competitor whom I trust. Otherwise, I would have never found my club. And at this point in my new career, I have to say I think this is probably the single most important thing for anyone starting in this sport. Find a club with a trainer who respects and supports you, knows how to work dogs successfully, talks to you and with whom you can have an open dialog. You’ll know when you’ve found the right club because these people become family. You lean on and support each other. Ask those who have been in the sport for a while. They’ve “been around the block” a few times and can recommend someone for you. Take advantage of the UDC’s new Mentoring program! • Just enjoy your dog. Enjoy the time you have with your dog while you can. Things can change in a matter of seconds. Sure, you have big hopes and dreams for your dog. Sure, you dream of that big trophy and that podium stand. But in the end, it’s just about you and your dog. I promise the bond you build during your journey to the podium will change your life. And remember when it seems too hard to go on, that the hard is what makes it great. O 11 Search by Irene Korotev Photos by Sarah Gentry D emonstrations were given by the UDC SAR volunteers throughout the week of national. On the first day, the next generation of search dogs was introduced to the UDC show participants. First, the two donated pups were showcased. Swift Run Lacey Rizzoli, “ Rizzy,” was donated by Tammy Marshall-Weldon to Cris Bean, to be trained for human remains and disaster recovery, and Solstorm Quest of the Sun, “Quest,” was donated by Diane Linstrom to Rayanne Chamberlain to be trained in live find and disaster work. Both pups performed foundation exercises and drills which showed how the basic skills they need for their chosen specialties are taught. Also included on the first day were two other next generation pups: “Trace,” Rebholzer Rocky Mountain Trace of the Blood Moon, from Traci Mulligan and owned by Pam Burns, and Swift Run Lobo, “Shamus,” from Cris Bean and Rizzy Rizzy, owned by Cris Bean 12 UDC Focus • Summer 2016 and Rescue at National Tammy Marshall-Weldon, owned by Irene Korotev. Trace is certified in human remains while Shamus is in training for trailing. Three experienced search dogs were present to oversee the newbies: Bonnie Guzman’s two human remains dogs, Swift Run’s Warrior, “Porter,” and Swift Run’s Hell Hath No Fury, “Octavia,” were there along with First Stryk Royal Purple, “Lexie,” owned by Irene and Dave Korotev. All three are human remains detection canines. The Human Remains Demo was scheduled on Wednesday during other show activities. Due to the weather, cold and rainy, a question-and-answer session was held inside at the main building with the attendees. Most questions were about how to train a dog to locate human remains. Thursday’s Trailing Demo was held outside despite the continuing rain. A short trail, aged for two hours, was laid on the grounds of the Medina Fairgrounds, traversing the parking lot and ending at the entrance of the main building. Shamus ran the trail successfully, in the rain, and located the trail layer at the building, identifying him by jumping up on him. The 2016 Service Dog Award was presented at the Annual UDC Banquet on Thursday evening. The recipient, Swift Run’s Warrior, “Porter,” owned by Bonnie Guzman, is a human remains detection dog. Porter was present, along with Bonnie, to receive this wellThis unidentified deserved award.
