KYCC MEETING 13.09.09
Charlie Artingstoll
Thanks for all of those who attended
the first meeting back after those
long, and for some, busy,
summer holidays.
KYCC kept going throughout the
summer with the Summer Diversity
Festival, Kids in Care Council, UK
Youth Parliament Annual Sitting, Kent
Cultural Baton, interviewing and filming at the Kent Show
and taking part in events like the Kent & Medway Young
People’s Safety Forum and British Youth Council
conference.
summer.
• Samuel spoke about the UKYP Free For
All campaign to abolish University tuition
fees and invited people to send one of
the postcards to their MP.
• He would also like to get a group together to
organise a YOF bid for the campaign.
• Marc gave an update on the Elections and urged those
wanting to stand to get their Candidate Forms in as soon
as possible.
• Lizzi asked if the posters could be anonymous so the
voters focus on the manifestos rather than how
people look.
It has been hard work getting back
into the routines of the meeting after
many of us, I’m sure, were spending
our time out with friends at the
beach.
All I can really say to you all is keep
up the good work and lets keep
making KYCC a prominent name
throughout Kent.
• Danny spoke about the Kent & Medway Young Persons
Safety Forum and encouraged members to come along
to the next meeting on 1st October.
• Poppy and Rhys attended the Children in Care council
where they explained the role of the KYCC and the
election process.
• Lizzi
announced that the PSHE Charter would be
launched at Canterbury High School on 16 October.
• Danny and Leigh went to the Shine Week event at the
House of Lords.
• Alex
P asked all Sub-Committees to send in their
PowerPoint slides for the presentation.
KYCC MEETING 13.09.09
• The Chairs welcomed and hoped everyone had a good
KYCC members helped Nigel Crocker’s filming team man the
media output from the Kent Youth Village by interviewing the
visitors, stall holders, events organisers along with wandering fruit
and silverback gorillas.
For three days our little patch of showground played host to local
bands, Artwise show tunes, PAYP activities, the HOUSE tent,
SittComm Circus performances and juggling skills, Duke of
Edinburgh Stage
Films are up on Kent TV here, including William Bane’s record
breaking attempt at high jumping from a stationary position.
The teams worked really hard and by the end of the day, all
anyone really wanted was for someone to put the kettle on*...

KYCC MEETING 13.09.09
Each year, the Kent Countryside needs enough rain to water the
crops and fill the reservoirs throughout the summer. With that in
mind, the Kent County Show took place from the 17th-19th July
at the County Showground in Detling.
in Tunbridge Wells into a hotel and not something for young people despite young
people being involved in discussions over the years it has lain empty.

• Election booths and boxes will be borrowed from Sevenoaks District Council
and used in schools holding elections. The events will all be linked to the
Citizenship Curriculum.
• Diversity Festival - Lizzie reported that it was a really good event with lots of young
people attending and lots of activities including opportunities for listening to
different genres of music
• Sevenoaks Summer Programme - Wide programme of activities for young people
in the Sevenoaks area. Lizzi said that the activities she got involved in were really
good.

KYCC MEETING 13.09.09
Youth of Generation (YOG) is a volunteer run organisation (soon to be charity) which has set out to
organise BIG indoor live music events held in Kent that are open to all ages, in non-alcohol venues.
The town centre and Milton Creek are both going to be
redeveloped as is Queenborough and Rushenden. This would be a good opportunity to put forward
the views and ideas of young people for what should be there. George Rouy and Chris Collins will
contact Kirsty Gaunt at Swale Borough Council to find out more about any consultations.
• The Canterbury Festival takes place from 17-31 October
• Members are promoting the KYCC elections in their school and encouraging greater
representation
• The Youth Mayor programme is getting a lot of support and funding from the National
Government. These are organised at a district/ borough level as is their role which could be
either to ‘shadow’ the Town Mayor at events, meetings, etc or to pursue their own agenda.
• The group agreed that any Kent Youth Mayors should be invited to KYCC meetings
• Canterbury does not seem to have a local youth forum, although there is a youth consultation
group called “Say What”. Eddie Carter to contact Canterbury City Council .
• There is a curfew for under-16s in Herne bay which also forbids groups of no more than 3 to be in
areas like the town centre and on the beach. Herne Bay needs something like an all night
youth-focused café to offer a decent alternative meeting place and alcohol-free zone.
• Abi is off to Vietnam for 3 weeks next July as part of a volunteering scheme organised by her at
her youth centre. The group would like to develop a KYCC version - Abi to email Marc details.
Maybe start in Kent? Environment group is already volunteering on beaches.

KYCC MEETING 13.09.09
• Is there anything to do in Sittingbourne?
1. We agreed to postpone the visit to Northfleet School for
Girls because of a lack of support from KYCC
members. A possible date for the visit is now 20 October
from 13.30 until 15:15.
2. Progress on the web-site is slow. Helena asked for the
group to do some research on this. The information
needs to be gathered before further work can take
place.
3. Future work is to do a 'credit card' of information for
schools pupils. The group would need to bid for funding
for this.
4. Helena has invited a colleague from the National Youth
Advise Service to the October meeting.
5. Lynne Miller provided information about anti-bullying
week
which
takes
place
from
16th-20th
November . Lynne also shared the 10 top tips poster for
schools and the why me booklet for parents.
6. National Anti-Bullying Week takes place from 16th-20th
November. The theme for 2009 is “Cyber-bullying”.

• Alice brought along the reply from DEFRA in response to the group’s letter.
The contents were
disappointing as it seemed to reiterate current government policy as per the website. A version of the
letter will be forwarded to the opposition parties.
• The application for Adopt-a-beach has been submitted with the Sunny Sands beach initially selected.
Once the pack arrives, permission needs to be obtained from the relevant district council.
• Sarah Moy introduced herself and explained her role as Kent Eco-schools officer. Sarah brought along
a lot of information including a draft of the “Eco-Schools - A guide for students” which she hopes the
group will help her to develop. This guide will encourage greater student involvement and consistent
teaching practices regarding the environment.
• Sarah also provided some contacts for volunteering and research visits which the group will investigate:
• Contacts for volunteering
• Country Parks - Louis Grover - [email protected]
• Countryside Management Partnerships - each partnership does have volunteers but might be best to make first
approach to Manager of all the Countryside Management Partnerships - Kate Phillips [email protected]
• Contacts for visits to waste centres
• SWEEEP - Electrical equipment reprocessors - Please contact Justin Greenaway 01795 434125
• Canterbury Material Recycling Facility (Hersden) - Please contact 01227 712364
• Aylesford Newsprint - Please contact Gemma Barrett 01622 796000
• Shelford Landfill site - 01227 826300
• For enquiries on household waste I would email Belinda Moran - [email protected] and mention that you
have been in contact with me and are interested to find out more about waste and recycling.

• Will take place on Wednesday 4th November in the Chamber at
County Hall.
• There will be a hot buffet in the restaurant from 5.00pm with the
event itself starting at 6.00pm and finishing at 7.30pm.
• Depending on the number of KCC and KYCC members wishing to
take part, we may need to have a rotating panel of 3 adults/ 3
young people or 2 adults/ 2 young people.
• If there are 2-3 panel changes, it might allow a small break(s)
during the event.
• As they are organising the event, the chair will be a member of the
• The www.kent.gov.uk website is changing - what do you
want to see on it?
• SubGroups and Campaign pages including Blogs
• Positive images - STOP campaign and “Busted” - rumour
and stereotype naming and shaming
• Newspaper
• Get involved page
• Polls/ surveys
• Members profiles
• “Have your say” page - young people’s views
• The latest version of the STOP… posters was distributed. This
could form part of a media campaign involving the new
website. There is also the possibility
that these could be developed for
public areas like bus shelters in Kent
for greater campaign awareness.
Would need to consult with parents,
etc about the project and get their
consent before any publication.
KYCC Positive Images of Young People group
• Letters will go out inviting KYCC members to nominate themselves
for chair and panel members and also the questions they would like
to ask/ be asked at the event. Similar letters have gone out also to
the Candidates standing at this year's elections to invite them.
• During the PIYP group at the next KYCC meeting on Sunday 18th
October, they will decide the chair/ panel members and the
questions.
• They hope to sort the selected questions into themes to aid the
Chairperson and to help decide who should be on the panel at
any one time as well as giving a greater structure to the
programme.

Debate Topic suggestions for October
• Can
men be treated equally to women?
Can men be appreciated as long-suffering when they
don't have to suffer pregnancy and when they appear
to enjoy their gender specific tasks i.e. Killing spiders. So
basically can women see men on the same level as
them? Rather than the other way round.
There are between five and ten places for a trip to Germany, which
is aimed at learning about politics in other countries, in addition to a
trip to the Reichstag (The German Houses of Parliament).
The funding has been given already. No other details are planned
yet.
There has been NO DATE SET FOR THE TRIP. So a meeting has been
organised for the 17th of October at SAMAYS Youth Centre in
Snodland to plan the trip. Transport may or may not be provided by
KYCC.
Attendance on the 17th is important but not vital as there is a KYCC
meeting on the 18th. However you MUST attend one of them as Luke
is only back for these two days before returning to University. The
time of the meeting is 1.00 PM to 4.00 PM.
The aim of the meeting is to plan the week, so please research the
Berlin area for areas of interest to you.
If you want any additional details please contact Luke at
