March/April 2016 - Livonia Chamber of Commerce
March/April
2016
ANNIVERSARY
COMMITTEE,
LIVONIA CHAMBER
PARTNER TO
PROVIDE SPREE
INFORMATION CENTER
Organizers of Livonia Spree and
the Livonia Chamber have
formed a new partnership to
provide easier access to details
for prospective vendors and
supporters about the city’s
annual festival.
The Livonia Chamber office
will serve as an information
center for all businesses and
organizations interested in
participating in Spree 66, which
takes place June 21-26 at
Livonia’s Ford Field.
During normal business hours,
businesses and organizations
looking to be in the Taste of
Spree, provide a business
promotional booth, or become
a sponsor of the event can get
the information they need to
apply at the Livonia Chamber of
Commerce office.
The Livonia Spree attracts some
500,000 visitors during the
annual six-day event. Since its
creation in the 1970s, funds
raised from Spree have enabled
the Livonia Anniversary
Committee to donate more than
$1 million into many charitable
community causes.

Livonia’s Business Connection
SOFT SKILLS DILEMMA
IT IS A TOP CONCERN FOR MANAGERS, REGARDLESS OF INDUSTRY
In my travels around
town, I hear from
business owners and
managers about their
struggle to find workers
who consistently show
up on time, ready to
work, and with a
professional demeanor.
from this program have worked for the Livonia
Chamber in recent years and each have been
helpful and valuable to supporting our work.
And this struggle
generally involves
younger workers, regardless of education level,
and in all industries.
Today’s managers cannot assume all young
people understand the expectations for on-time,
professional attire, customer service skills,
problem solving, appropriate cell phone use at
work, and so on. Managers need to take the time
during orientation with new hires to explain
these expectations, and how they want these
skills executed in their operation.
Dan West, President
Other so-called “soft skills” include: Calling in to
miss work is an exception instead of a norm, able
to work without constantly handling a mobile
device, ability to take initiative, and proper
interaction with customers at the front door and
on the phone.
To many veteran workers, these attributes might
seem like common sense. But for many of those
veteran workers, these skills were emphasized by
parents. With evolving family trends and overall
attitudes in recent decades, soft skills are not
discussed as much among young people entering
the workforce.
There is plenty of finger-pointing going around
for why this is the case, but that does not solve
the problem. Some high schools and colleges are
starting to institute soft-skills training in their
program offerings. There is an outstanding
example a school program here in Livonia:
The Career Intern Program.
These interns work 12 hours a week, in lieu
of traditional classes, and attend a seminar
each Friday with program coordinator Mary
Pat Benoit. In these seminars, students get
training in resume writing, productive
interactions with customers and co-workers,
professional discipline, and problem solving.
These interns come to work on time, with a
smile on their face, properly dressed, and
able to carry on professional conversations.
These are impressive young people who will
be great hires in the future. Several interns
While this is a great school program, it can only
service a limited number of students. Human
resources experts say it is also important for
business owners and managers to better explain
their expectations for new hires.
It is in everyone’s best interest for managers to
take the time to provide clear and comprehensive
orientations with a focus on soft skills. It will
either provide a great, productive foundation for
your new hires to have a successful tenure at
your company, or provide good legal standing
for you to dismiss a worker for not meeting
expectations.
HR experts say managers can have some legal
issues if they fire a worker for not meeting
expectations, no matter how basic they seem, if
the expectations were not clearly explained.

NEW CHAMBER EVENT DESIGNED TO EXPAND
LIVONIA’S BUSINESS CULTURE
The Livonia Chamber is planning a new, eye-opening program
that will help business owners and managers appreciate the
increasingly diverse marketplace around metro Detroit.
Leading representatives of various cultures engaged in metro
Detroit business will provide the unique opportunity to learn
about Asian, German, Chaldean, and Hispanic cultures, and
new ideas to better prepare for productive interactions with
business people from these respective cultures. The discussion
will help the audience better understand these cultures,
communication styles, and aid community and company leaders
to develop more inviting resources to better interact with
foreign-based companies.
The Connecting Cultures to Business Luncheon will be held
Thursday, September 8, at the Schoolcraft College VisTaTech
Center. The following have committed to appear on the panel:
Van Nguyen, Executive Director, Asian Pacific American
Chamber of Commerce, Reinhard Lemke, attorney and senior
advisor to American Chamber of Commerce in Germany,
Martin Manna, president, Chaldean American Chamber of
Commerce and the Chaldean Community Foundation, and
Camilo Suero, president, Michigan Hispanic Chamber of
Commerce.
Photo: Michael Shuster Photography
“We are honored to have this panel of energetic, knowledgeable
and well-respected collection of professionals spend time with
us to help us better understand their cultures,” said Livonia
Chamber President Dan West. “Our hope is that this will lead
to more exciting business opportunities in and around Livonia,
but it will be exciting just to learn about the reach and impact of
these cultures across metro Detroit.”
Each panelist will discuss the influence of their respective
cultures across metro Detroit and in industry, and answer
questions from the audience. Each panelist will be available
briefly for individual meetings after the formal program.
“Experts are saying that communities that do the best job in
welcoming foreign investment will have the best chance of
economic development success in the future,” West added.
“This program will help our business and political learn how
Livonia and our neighbors can improve our relationships with
diverse people and industries.”
Event sponsorships are now available. Individual seats will go
on sale later. For more information on sponsorships, contact
West at 734.427.2122, or via email at [email protected].
