Last month’s Minutes were displayed for members to read, and were subsequently signed by President Molly Page. There were several forthcoming events to be noted: an open garden event at haughley Park, Stowmarket, will be held on Sunday 12th May 2pm-5pm, entrance £4, and an audience with Bob Flowerdew of Gardener’s Question Time at 2.30pm for £10. A Flower Festival and Fete will be held at St Mary’s Church, hunstanton on Friday 26th July. A Quiz will be held at Spexhall on Saturday 18th May in aid of the village hall, and a supper buffet is included in the £5 entrance fee. There were reminders of the group social evening at Rumburgh on Wednesday 8th May at 7.30pm cost £2, plus bring a plate of food for the buffet; lifts for members were all allocated. The Patrick Stead hospital Summer Fete will be on June lst, and we will take a collection at our next meeting for our hamper raffle. The Mystery Outing on June 18th has seats available on a 53-seater coach, non-members charged £8; and there are still a few tickets available for the outing to Southwold Theatre on Thursday 15th August to see Not Now, Darling. Molly Page announced that our intrepid darts team had won all of their four matches. She drew our attention to the suggestion box for future speakers in 2014. After tea our speaker Mrs Janet huckle was introduced to give us a talk on ‘Pubs, Wet and Dry.’ her research has taken her to council records, tithe maps and other sources for past and current names of the plethora of drinking venues in and around halesworth. Suffolk barley was used to make the working man’s beer, and a ‘hush’ shop-keeper was an unlicensed beer seller. All of the pubs had different names over the years: the Station hotel, for instance, (1855 — 1945) has been called the Queen’s head, the Taverners’ Club, Labour Club, and is now an office. King's showroom was once The Oriental. The half Moon in Rectory Street (1861 — 1906) was burned down, and the Black eagle in Chediston Street (1748— 1929) is now a Grade 2 listed private house, as was the White Swan in the Thoroughfare which dates from 1450. The two best known, of course, are the Angel, dating from 1450, originally a coaching inn, and REYDON The President gave the members a warm welcome on what should have been a Spring day but was at the end of the coldest March for many decades. Members gave feedback on a most enjoyable Quiz hosted by the new Wangford Angels WI and whilst we didn’t win we did not disgrace ourselves either. Our speaker for the meeting was Kelly Jacobs from the World Land Trust. Not many of us had known much beforehand about the Trust and Kelly changed that for us with a most informative talk. She pointed out that being based in an office in halesworth was no different to being in a very expensive office in London given the age of new technologies. The Trust raises monies to give to partner agencies so that local people can own and look after and maintain areas of land for the wildlife. Sometimes it conflicts with local business interests and they work hard to ensure that local people understand the importance of the rain forests, grasslands ect. With so many species of animals under threat from human activity and money driven goals the work that they undertake is proving vital. Miss Jacobs was warmly thanked by Pam Clarke. Steve and Becky Cundy are passionate about maintaining and building on the traditional values that were instilled in their business by Richard & Jennie, whilst adapting the service to suit the hectic lives of the modern day customer. It makes a refreshing change to see a small family run business that trades on good quality local produce and a reliable honest service continuing to grow through the generations going from strength to strength. Visit the website www. cundysdairy.co.uk or phone Becky on 01986 892428 for further information on registering as a new customer, so you can start enjoying the convenience of waking up to fresh home deliveries whilst supporting your local community. 0153912 Off Licence on Premises For Caring and Personal Service anything you can think of from bread, pet food, garden compost to winter fuel to name just a few. Something else that helps Cundy's Dairy stand out from the crowd is that they are happy to try and source any products you may want that are not currently on their shopping list. With the quality of produce paramount. Steve and Becky would like to invite any local producers who may wish to work together to get in touch as they are keen to continue to expand and enhance the range of local produce. It is not just the range of products that Cundy's Dairy are looking to expand. In 2012 they were delighted to have acquired a customer base from fellow dairyman Will Austin, owner of Will the Milk. This immediately enabled them to expand their delivery areas to include halesworth and surrounding villages, right out to the coastal town of Southwold serving both doorstep and commercial customers. Steve tells me that they have really enjoyed serving this new area and can see massive potential for new customers wanting to enjoy the convenience of a good, honest and reliable delivery service providing them with top quality local produce. Cundy's Dairy also supply commercial customers such as shops, farm shops, restaurants, pubs, care homes, offices, bed & breakfast and more. Commercial customers enjoy the same convenience, quality and service and in turn their customers, clients and staff benefit from great local produce. The commercial aspect is another area of the business which Steve and Becky are keen to expand. The husband and wife team welcome enquiries from all businesses and are happy to provide a no obligation quote and discount on bulk orders. Cundy’s Dairy have always had the environment in mind, the Dairy offers milk in all forms of packaging; traditional glass bottles, which on average are used 13 times before being recycled, to the larger, more convenient poly bottles which you can recycle alongside your normal household rubbish. The Dairy has also recently invested in new energy efficient fridges, all of which are run by renewable energy from the Dairy’s solar system. This means you can rest assured that when you order your milk from Cundy’s Dairy you are 0153956 FAMILY BUTCHER Meat * Poultry * Game * Cooked Meats * Cheeses * Delicatessen * Fruit * Vegetables * Groceries * Catering Service * Cooked Meat * Barbecues roads grinding to a standstill thanks to a few flakes of snow! This personal family approach means that when calling to place an order, customers will be speaking directly to Becky or Steve and not having to deal with a large foreign call centre used by some of the larger multinational dairies. In fact, Becky very much embraces and enjoys being the first point of contact as she believes this is a key factor in having such high customer satisfaction. Cundy's have taken a very progressive approach to improving the service they offer whilst making it available to a wider audience. Naturally a key element of a home delivery service is convenience, what could be easier than waking up and opening your door to value for money, freshly delivered local produce. To this end Cundy's Dairy deliver bright & early up to six days a week (depending on area) enabling the modern family to enjoy the convenience of home deliveries before starting their busy day. The launch of their new website enables customers to browse the extensive range of products available, add to their order and if desired pay online all up until 8pm the day before delivery. Of course customers are more than welcome to phone the office or leave a note out for their friendly Milkman in the traditional way. Unlike most major home delivery services Cundy’s Dairy delivers directly to your door with no delivery charge. A key point to their great success is that they source their milk from the Marybelle Dairy near halesworth, who are renowned locally for the quality of their milk, cream & yoghurts. These goods are processed with milk from local dairy herds, thus supporting our local farmers, creating local jobs and in turn greatly reducing food miles whilst providing us all with the ultimate fresh product you are now able to enjoy! As a small family business Cundy's Dairy have always been keen to support local producers. you could be forgiven for thinking that a dairy company would only deliver milk, cream, and associated products. Well Cundy's Dairy are a bit different and they do more than just milk. In fact, they will deliver just about 0153942 JOHN GROOM Jennie in 2007. Steve and Becky are supported by a fantastic team of staff including; Melvyn, Matt, Joe and Ben and will be joined by a new rounds man Paul in the next month. Becky is quick to point out that since the company was founded in 1919 they have still never missed a delivery; this is a remarkable achievement when you consider that in recent winters we have seen 0153957 CUNDy'S Dairy is a local and traditional family owned Dairy based in Bungay, and has been serving families throughout the Waveney Valley area for more than 90 years. The company is run by Steve Cundy and his wife Becky who are the fourth generation of the Cundy family to serve the local community, having taken over the business from Steve’s parents Richard and tel (01692) 581965 e-mail – [email protected] 0153946 Chequers street, east ruston, stalham norwiCh nr12 9Jt to cancel, so we were grateful to Mrs S Oldman for stepping into the breach and organising a quiz. The accompanying slide photographs of the many pubs in their heyday were fascinating. It must be explained that Mrs huckle’s interest and her exhaustive research is purely academic, as she drinks only water. her talk was given on behalf of the British Limbless ex-Service Men's Association, to which her fee is donated. A vote of thanks was given in appreciation of a most enjoyable evening. The raffle was drawn, and the competition of a glass ornament was won by Diane. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 21st May at St Mary’s hall at 7pm, when this year’s WI Resolutions will be discussed.
