The September 2013 MBA-EM cohort sees 10 scholars, who come from a diverse professional background, enrolling in the programme. The average professional working experience among the scholars is 8 years, whose affiliations include companies from within and outside of PETRONAS group. During the programme’s registration and induction session at PETRONAS Petroleum Resource Centre (PRC), UTP Dean of Centre for Graduate Studies, Associate Professor Dr Mohd Fadzil Hassan, representing Professor Ir. Dr. Ahmad Fadzil Mohd Hani, UTP Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic, described the MBA-EM programme as a niche MBA programme similar to that offered by Singapore’s Nanyang Technology University, but with a fraction of the fees which is to the benefit of students. The MBA-EM programme is the 7th postgraduate taught-course programme offered by UTP. According to UTP Head of Management and Humanities (M&H) Department, Associate Professor Dr Azrai Abdullah, the MBA-EM programme has come a long way before its commencement and all preparation to ensure the high quality of programme delivery has been done well in advance. To ensure the relevancy and robustness of the curriculum, M&H Department has done numerous internal curriculum review, expert panel workshops and industry stakeholders engagement. Also present at the event to welcome the scholars were Puan Nelly Francis Shariah, Head of Education and Learning, HRM; En. Azahar Mohd Noor, PRC Senior Manager; En. Ismail Isa, PRC Manager; Dr Lai Fong Woon, UTP MBA-EM Programme Manager, as well as lecturers and staff from UTP and PRC. 4 According to Dr Lai, the educational objective of the MBA-EM is to develop leaders who are competent in driving and sustaining global energy business. Dr Lai opines that the programme is highly relevant especially to those professionals who are in the technical line, but are climbing the corporate ladders and need to acquire more knowledge on the managerial expertise for the industry. Apart from business executives, this programme also aims at attracting top talent candidates from the energy sector along, with other professionals serving the sector such as bankers and lawyers alike. This 50-credit hour, 20-month MBA-EM programme features a dynamic and robust curriculum, which includes 9 business core and 5 energy management specialisation modules, namely Energy Value Chain, Energy Management, Energy Technology and Innovation, Low Carbon Economy and Sustainability, Energy Regulations and Policies. In addition, the programme structure also incorporates business research methodology, consultancy management and report. To enrich the learning experience as well as to provide a global perspective to scholars, the MBA-EM programme forges collaboration with the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute (RASEI) of University of Colorado at Boulder, USA, in which the 5 energy management specialisation modules will be delivered by RASEI’s professors. RASEI’s professors are led by Professor Dr Paul Komor, who in 2007 shared in the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). All of the MBA-EM off-campus classes will be conducted over the weekends with the exception of 5 energy management modules, in which some weekday classes will be involved. This arrangement will facilitate working professionals attending the classes. All the offcampus classes will be held at PRC as it has been appointed as the MBA-EM’s programme delivery partner. For further enquiries about the MBA-EM programme, please contact Dr. Lai Fong Woon at +605-3687743 or email: laifongwoon@petronas. com.my. Highlights SEDEX 31 sparks more inventions and innovation Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) organised three simultaneous events; the Opening Ceremony of the 31st Science and Engineering Design Exhibition (SEDEX 31), MoU Signing Ceremony between UTP and Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) and MoU Signing Ceremony between UTP and Anise Asia Cloud Sdn Bhd, as part of the University’s efforts to realise its vision in becoming a leader in Technology Education and Centre for Creativity and Innovation. This year marked the 31st Science and Engineering Design Exhibition (SEDEX 31). It serves as a platform for UTP students and staff to showcase their creative and innovative ideas and designs to the campus community. Since it was first held in 1997, the event has successfully produced many inventions leading to new prototypes, research methodologies and approaches in various fields of expertise. The opening ceremony of SEDEX31 was officiated by Ir. Choo Kok Beng, President of Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM). In his speech, Ir Choo Kok Beng said that Science, Engineering and Technology are essential elements for the successful implementation and maintenance of the many infrastructure projects needed for the nation to achieve developed status by 2020. As Malaysia marches towards becoming a developed nation, the role of young engineers, becomes increasingly important. Thus, he urged that today’s young aspiring engineers to apply innovation in their work and study, to find and create alternative innovations and ultimately become the pioneers and drivers of these innovations. Collabaration Later, an MoU was inked between IEM and UTP. The collaboration with IEM will benefit UTP in many ways since IEM promotes and advances the science and profession of engineering in all disciplines. The society also facilitates the exchange of information and ideas related to engineering. Besides gaining recognition for engineering experiences and professional accomplishments, UTP students joining IEM will also have access to a wide network of fellow engineers in the private and public sectors in Malaysia as well as regional and international engineering bodies. At the same event another MoU was inked between UTP and Anise Asia Cloud Sdn Bhd. UTP will collaborate with Anise Asia to organise a competition known as Dis.Rupt.Edu at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS. The event is held with the objective to cultivate innovativeness among the university’s community. It will showcase an array of great projects by students and companies and will look for great presenters, who may compete for a trip to the United States. Prof. Ir. Dr. Ahmad Fadzil B Mohd Hani, UTP Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic, in his closing speech believed that SEDEX 31 has achieved its objective to aspire school children’s involvement in creative and innovative activities as part of extending the innovative culture towards the surrounding community, which is also in line with the Government’s innovation initiatives. He also delivered the prizes to all winning teams. 1Malaysia Kids Apart from design exhibitions, SEDEX 31 also conducted two new programmes. One was a learning programme known as “1 Malaysia Kids”, aimed to create awareness of cultural diversity in Malaysia and to enhance school children’s interest and passion in Science, Mathematics and Technology through fun and simple ways. Another one was industrial sharing session, a programme that linked UTP with major professionals from the industries. 5 Feature Story Developing leaders to manage global energy Associate Azrai of Professor Abdullah, Dr Head Management Humanities and Department, has been very instrumental in developing postgraduate for the new programmes department with the vision of enabling them to contribute to the UTP intellectually development as a whole. of Four programmes i.e. MPhil/PhD in Management and MPhil/ PhD in Social Sciences and Humanities have been successfully launched. The latest addition is the MBA in Energy Management, which has the vision of developing and for have creating the energy received leaders industry, Prof. Milivoje M Kostic, a notable researcher and scholar from Northern Illinois University shared that the most challenging issue of human-beings for the next century is energy1. The ever increasing energy demand, the threat of fast depleting energy resources in recent times and the unconventional resources revolution – all have caused concerns on sustainable energy supply worldwide. Closer at home, Malaysian Government, with the execution of the Economic Transformation Plan (ETP), recognised that 20% of national’s GDP is derived from oil, gas and energy sectors, and as such has included it as one of the 12 national key economic areas targeting to create 52,000 jobs in which 40% of that would be qualified professionals such as engineers, geologists and managers in the energy sector2. Under these circumstances, the oil, gas and energy industry, including related businesses within the value-chain, worldwide, requires urgent need for managers and professionals who are not only competent and equipped with discerning insights to business but also visionary in driving their respective businesses with global perspectives. Associate Professor (AP) Dr Azrai Abdullah shares the University’s latest offering, MBA-Energy Management (MBA-EM) which is aspired to become a solution for leaders to steer the energy and related sectors. “Traditionally, an MBA is viewed as a general management degree for the corporate business world but such a landscape has changed. A niche MBA such as Energy Management helps expand understanding, perspectives and insights while offering broad but relevant management skills and knowledge. In this programme specifically, upon completion of the programme, the graduates should be able to analyse current and emerging trends in the global energy sector to develop and implement effective energy management strategies for global sustainability; evaluate business decisions to ensure efficient and sustainable management of resources and the environment; and integrate management, leadership and business principles to perform strategic roles in energy management. favourable responses from the market. 1. http://www.kostic.niu.edu/energy/Energy_Future-Coal_Clean_Energy.ppt 2. http://etp.pemandu.gov.my/upload/ETP_Booklet.pdf 6 Feature Story “The format of adding specialist electives to a standard MBA ensures that students enjoy the diversity of professional networking as well as working with a group focused on their particular area of business”, AP Dr Azrai elaborates. He also reassures that because of the meticulous design of the programme, professionals from various sectors like banking and finance, institutions of higher learning, consulting companies, manufacturing, retail, marines, upstream and downstream business of oil and gas, etc may benefit from the programme because the cornerstone to it is management. AP Dr Azrai also added that input from the MBA Capstone Project could be the catalyst for postgraduate research for commercial use, industrial consulting work or for knowledge advancement at PhD levels. UTP’s MBA-EM is conducted in partnership with Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute of Colorado Boulder, USA (RASEI) as its modules delivery partner and PETRONAS Petroleum Resource Centre (PRC) as its programme delivery partner. Drawing synergy from international expertise and industry infrastructure, the programme offers unprecedented leverage to potential candidates at RM50,000.00 for the entire programme. For local candidates, the total fee can be offset from MyBrain15 sponsored by the Malaysian Government and the energy management specialisation modules can be traded off as short course training programmes. In addition, some organisations regard the 5-day seminar for each specialisation module as part of the study leave for its staff. These are some of the manners in which the programme is customised in meeting busy professionals’ requirements besides cushioning about 60% of the cost of the programme. In PETRONAS for example, this programme has been recognised as one of the channels for its Staff Development Programme. The staff who enrolled for this programme may benefit from the short course training and the study leave benefits. BUSINESS CORE MODULE academic. A programme needs to be economically viable. In managing the cost, the University establishes close relationship with its partner University to enable visiting professors including Professor Komor who is a Noble Laureate to share their expertise and experience. Having top notch industry and academic authorities lend the required magnet to attract candidates. Conducting classes at PRC, KLCC is a plus point which provides easy access for working professionals. Regionally, aside from UTP, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in collaboration with BI Norwegian School of Management, Norway also runs an MBA programme with fundamentals in energy management. Currently the department is trying to expand its reach to Qatar, Oman and Korea. “We are bullish about the prospects from these countries as we already have long standing reputation in undergraduate programmes, research collaborations and industry-academics partnerships. Our programme contents, industry connection, infrastructure and competitive fees would be conducive factors to attract more candidates to this programme”. At present, UTP’s MBA-EM has 26 students under its enrollment from 2 batches of intakes. Moving forward, the University is all geared for its first batch to graduate in 2015 for the first convocation. With this first batch of graduates, UTP would be eligible for international recognition with The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Locally, accreditation from the Energy Commission would also mean recognition by Public Services Department to send public servants as candidates for UTP MBA-EM. “Who knows, we may just emulate Lehigh University that started as a technical institute but now is renowned with its Graduate Business School. With our strength in technology education and research, having the management elements would just add the commercial leverage required in developing industry leaders”, AP Dr Azrai ended the interview on a positive note. 1. Management Consultancy Project AP Dr Azrai said he believed in advocating two pillars in the design of any programme and specifically for this MBA-EM: enterprise and “The knowledge that I have gained after only a few sessions into my MBA-EM has provided me with the confidence to serve my organisation. I may not be involved directly in the operations of energy business but my department extends services that support acquisition of equipment and machines for energy related disciplines. During procurement exercises, I could guide my users by asking them specific and relevant questions.
