Continued on page 4 QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS the essence Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) is greatly honoured to have conferred an Honorary Doctorate in Petroleum Engineering & Technology to His Excellency Mr Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the President of Turkmenistan, during a Special Convocation Ceremony held at the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS, Kuala Lumpur on 8 December 2011. The award was conferred by UTP Chancellor YABhg Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in recognition of His Excellency’s significant contributions to the sustainable and efficient development of Turkmenistan’s petroleum resources that has propelled the nation to greater heights. The University is also proud to celebrate students’ success after their years of hard work and challenges which culminates in receiving their scrolls during the Convocation Ceremony. The 11th Convocation Ceremony held on 16 October 2011 at UTP was no exception. We congratulate all the 1470 graduates from the various engineering and technology fields on their success and wish them well in their future careers. Further in the convo spirit, UTP also held its 8th Mini Convocation Ceremony on 19 December in Sudan where 12 of the 25 Sudanese students who graduated from UTP received their scrolls from Puan Juniwati Rahmat Hussin, Chairman of the University’s Board of Directors. In its quest to foster a closer relationship with the industries as well as attain academic and R&D excellence, the University continued to forge ahead with industry collaborations. On 13 December 2011, UTP signed MoUs with Amtech Chemcials Sdn Bhd, IDS Electronics Sdn Bhd, IEV Malaysia Sdn Bhd and Murata Electronics Sdn Bhd. Not to forget the immense support we have received from the industries, UTP held a thank you dinner for its industry partners in an evening called Reflections on 1 December 2011. The University was also proud to receive Ms Hinda Gharbi, Schlumberger Asia President, during her maiden visit to the campus on 15 December. The University continues to shine in the field of R&D when it achieved many awards at the Innova Brussels Exposition 2011 while UTP students have consistently excelled in various tournaments and competitions in the fields of sports, arts, multimedia and commerce. We are also happy to note that UTP alumni is growing steadily with more chapters and branches added, both on the local and international fronts. Lastly, in line with the University’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, UTP held the Menggapai Impian 2011 programme and shared solar technology with the local community of Seri Iskandar. We hope 2012 will bring the Univerity closer in its journey towards excellence and achieving Research University status. Enjoy your reading! “Arkadaga Shohrat” (Fame to our leader) as His Excellency was escorted to the Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP) by members of the PETRONAS Board, EXCO, Management Committee as well as management and representatives from PETRONAS Businesses. Also present were Minister in Attendance Foreign Minister YB Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman and representatives from the Turkmen and Malaysian Governments. leadership, excellence and contributions in their respective professions of field work in academia and society. The visit is part of His Excellency’s State Visit to Malaysia, which included a Special Convocation Ceremony by UTP conferring an Honorary Doctorate in Petroleum Engineering & Technology to the Turkmen President. The honorary doctorate is in recognition of His Excellency’s significant contributions to the sustainable and efficient development of Turkmenistan’s petroleum resources that has propelled the progress of the Central Asian nation to greater heights. In his speech which was translated to the Turkmen language, Dato’ Shamsul said that PETRONAS had sponsored more than 90 students to study at UTP in a wide range of engineering and technology programmes relevant to the industry. YBhg Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim, UTP Vice Chancellor delivered the citation. “They form a tangible link between the nations and we hope that they will absorb the experiences, knowledge and expertise which we hope will benefit them in the future,” he added. In his acceptance speech delivered in the Turkmen language, His Excellency Mr Berdimuhamedov said: “Today is a milestone event in the history of our country. This conferment of the honorary doctorate by this reputable (institution) to me is a fact that makes me proud and very happy. “I would like to say that we enjoy a long standing cooperation in relation to the friendship and brotherhood with Malaysia and I accept this honorary title to be a sign of friendship and distinction for Turkmenistan and its people and acknowledgement of the constructive furtherance of our long standing successful cooperation,” he added. The Turkmen leader also urged the 43 Turkmen UTP students present at the ceremony to do well in their studies, return home and contribute to the progress of their country. “We are very proud to have our leader here and it was great for him to motivate and encourage us in our studies. It was the most exciting moment for me,” said Nyrat Durdyev, Final Year student in Information Communication Technology at UTP. EVENTS QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS Eleventh Convocation Ceremony Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) celebrated its 11th Convocation Ceremony on Sunday, 16 October 2011. This year, UTP witnessed a total of 1470 of its students graduating in their respective fields of studies. Out of this figure, 41 was for PhD, 80 for MSc and 1349 were undergraduates from various programmes i.e Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Business Information Systems and Information and Communication Technology. 121 were postgraduates from Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Technology Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Petroleum Geoscience. All graduates received their scrolls from UTP Chancellor, Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad and the Pro Chancellor, Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas at the University’s Chancellor Hall. The ceremony was also attended by Puan Juniwati Rahmat Hussin, UTP Chairman of the Board of Directors, UTP Vice Chancellor Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Haji Kasim, representatives of various local universities, members of the University’s board of directors and PETRONAS Management Committee members. This year’s Chancellor Awards were presented to Lai Chin Leong (Civil Engineering) for Gold, Muhamad Aiman Bin Jamaludin (Petroleum Engineering) for Silver and Kuhanesapathy A/L Thavaras Pathy (Chemical Engineering) for Bronze. On 8 October 2011, as a Convofair kickoff event, UTP MTB Jamboree 2011 which is a 42km cycling event was held involving more than 400 riders from all over Malaysia including riders/teams from as far as Terengganu and Malacca. Parallel to the jamboree, a CSR programme was also carried out involving the surrounding community. 20 new mountain bikes which were donated by individuals and various departments in UTP were handed over to selected less fortunate students who had achieved academic excellence in their respective schools. The selected schools were SRK Tronoh, SRJK (C) Tronoh, SRJK (T) Tronoh and SRK Sri Tronoh. On 14 October 2011, UTP was highlighted in Malaysia Hari Ini on TV3. The 2 hours and 30 minutes live programme involved interviews with the Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellors, Academic and Research Exhibition (AcadRex2011), Anugerah PENCIPTA Muda 2011 (which was participated by more than 20 primary and secondary schools), performances by UTP students and many more. On 15 October, a convocation dinner was held and attended by YABhg Tun Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad as the guest of honour, PETRONAS and UTP Management members and the graduates. The audience enjoyed exciting performances by UTP Performing Arts Group (UPAG), Tronoh Theater Shop (TTS), UTP Virtuoso Group, UTP Bhangra Group and UTP International Cultural Group. It was an emotional yet memorable event for the graduates when they were presented with a special montage of their university days. UTP and the Student’s Representative Council had also organised a three-day festivity at its campus in Bandar Seri Iskandar. The ConvoFair, held from 14 to 16 October 2011, was officiated by YBhg Datuk Haji Omar Bin Abdul Rahman, Deputy Secretary General, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. Various activities took place during the ConvoFair which included performances by the guest artistes, Mirwana and Muzzy Band. 5 EVENTS QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS UTP Holds Eighth Convocation Ceremony in Sudan Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) held its 8th Convocation Ceremony in the Republic of Sudan on 19 December 2011. This year, 12 of the 25 Sudanese students who graduated from UTP received their scrolls from the Chairman of the ITPSB Board of Directors and PETRONAS Vice President of Human Resource Management Puan Juniwati Rahmat Hussin, at the PETRONAS Sudan Complex in Khartoum. “We are very pleased with the success of our graduates as evidenced from successful job employment upon completion of their studies,” said Puan Juniwati, adding that of the number of graduates in this year, 90% have secured permanent work placements within six months in Malaysia and abroad. The ceremony was witnessed by Sudan’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, His Excellency Professor Khamis Kajo Kunda, Chairman of PETRONAS Sudan Operations Encik Mohd Jukris Abdul Wahab, representatives of various local universities as well as proud members of the graduates’ families. In his speech, the Minister commended PETRONAS for its efforts in helping to produce qualified Sudanese professionals through scholarship awards to UTP. He hoped more Sudanese youths would be given the same opportunity in the future. The undergraduate and postgraduate degree recipients majored in the fields of Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Amongst the graduates, nine qualified as Doctors of Philosophy, seven others received their Master of Science scrolls and another nine received their Bachelor in Engineering degrees. Most of these graduates were awarded scholarships from PETRONAS to further their studies in UTP. The post-graduate candidates were handpicked from local universities to strengthen their credentials as well-trained educators and give back to the community upon their return to Sudan. The undergraduates were selected from amongst the best students in Sudan to provide a sound stepping stone to help them start their careers. Sudanese make up the largest number of international students in UTP. So far, the university has produced 148 Sudanese graduates, including the recipients this year. There are currently 99 undergraduate and 90 postgraduate students from Sudan, both PETRONAS sponsored and privatelyfunded, still studying in UTP. Reflection: An Evening with UTP Loyal Partners Since its establishment, UTP has been very focused in its effort to foster a close relationship with the industries. Throughout the years, many collaborations have been secured in various areas especially in research and development. Apart from that, this also led to awarding of scholarships, event sponsorship, internship and career placement. Until today our industry partners have been very significant in supporting the University in achieving its vision and mission. Thus in recognising this effort, the University had organised an appreciation dinner for all its industry partners. ‘Reflection: An Evening With UTP Loyal Partners’ was held on 1 December 2011 at the Intercontinental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. Graced by YBhg Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim, the Vice Chancellor, the event was attended by 130 representatives from 72 companies. Throughout the evening, the audience were kept entertained by exciting performances from the UTP Performing Arts Group while enjoying their dinner. 6 COLLABORATION QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS MOU between UTP and 4 Industry Partners Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) in its quest to attain academic and R&D excellence had signed MoUs with four industry partners at the University on 13 December 2011. UTP was represented by its Vice Chancellor, Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim and Associate Professor Dr Abdul Rashid b Abdul Aziz, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research & Innovation. The signing ceremony marked the University’s collaboration with the industries in various aspects. Details of the collaboration are as listed below: 1. Amtech Chemicals Sdn Bhd Areas of Collaboration: Research and Development on corrosion inhibitors Signatories: Ir. Abdul Aziz Mohamed Amin, Executive Chairman and En Rezzuan Shah Jamal Shah, Managing Director UTP’s collaboration with Amtech will see joint development of high temperature high pressure test/flow loops for corrosion inhibitors at UTP, field application and monitoring of corrosion inhibitors, performance testing of Amtech’s chemical products as well as development of software and on-line corrosion predication. UTP and Amtech will also have joint education programmes such as information sharing sessions, lectures and seminars on related research areas, student internship and postgraduate students’ attachment opportunities, joint application of R&D grants and students and faculty attachments to Amtech’s field operations. 2. IDS Electronics Sdn Bhd Areas of Collaboration: Sharing of facilities. Staff attachment opportunities and student internship Signatories: Mr KS Ong, Chief Executive Officer and En Ahmad Sultan, Senior R&D Manager The MoU between the University and IDS Electronics Sdn Bhd will see both parties enjoy the sharing of facilities, information sharing sessions, staff attachment opportunities as well as student internship opportunities. Currently, IDS supports the University in wafer sawing services of MEMS microchip prototype. With this support, UTP has moved one step forward in completing the prototype development. UTP is looking forward towards further R&D collaboration with IDS in the future especially in special package development of the microchip products. 3. The exposition which was held from 17 – 19 November 2011 at Brussels Expo, Place de Belgique, Brussels was organised by The Idea Monopoly. ORTHOPTIC THERAPY DEVICE ACHIEVEMENT QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS Champion in the International OSS Creative Multimedia Competition 2011 Eight students from the Computer & Information Sciences Department participated in the 2011 International Open Source Society (OSS) Creative Multimedia Development Competition (http://mygosscon.oscc.org.my/2011/multimedia-competition-2011). The competition was held in conjunction with the Malaysia Chief Information Officer (CIO) & Malaysian Government Open Source Conferences 2011. The competition was open to all individuals aged 18 years and above; at the same time must be students in any institution of higher education worldwide. It was organised by the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation & Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) in collaboration with the Open Source Competency Centre (OSCC). The final round of the competition involving 7 short-listed teams was held at the PICC, Putrajaya, from 29-30 November 2011. UTP produced a video montage entitled “Make Everything Happen”. The team, which emerged as champion for the competition, proudly took home a cash prize of RM 30,000. The BSN Inter-Varsity Social Venture Challenge 2011 5 students from the Computer & Information Sciences Department participated in the Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) Inter-Varsity Social Venture Challenge 2011 (http://www. mybsn.com.my/socialventure/index.htm) with their social venture business proposal entitled ‘E-Commerce for Youngsters’. The project was short-listed from 38 total submissions from public & private higher learning institutions across the nation. The final round was held at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel, KL from 3-5 December 2011 involving the best 8 teams in which the students had to present their project to panels comprising of financial institution representatives, industrial experts, social-venture capitalists and media representatives. The project clinched a Merit Award comprising a cash prize of RM 5,000 and RM 1,000 worth of book vouchers. In addition, the team also received special invitation to participate in the Regional DiGi Challenge for Change Competition 2011 in Penang. 9 QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS ACHIEVEMENT Champion – International Student Sports Carnival 2011 The Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) contingent managed to uphold the title of OVERALL CHAMPION for two consecutive years at the International Student Sports Carnival (ISSC) by winning seven gold medals in Volleyball (Male & Female), Relay (Male & Female), Tug-of-War (Male & Female) & Sepak Raga Bulatan as well as a bronze medal in Badminton. The event was held at UTP from 28 to 30 October 2011. More than 1000 international student athletes from 32 institutions of higher learning in Malaysia took part in the tournament. It was jointly organised by the Ministry of Higher Education and hosted by UTP. Eight games namely Futsal, Netball, Volleyball, Basketball 3-on-3, Sepak Raga Bulatan, Tug-of-War, Badminton and Campus Relay were contested. 10 The tournament was officiated by YBhg Dr Mohamed Ali Abdul Rahman, Director, Governance Division (Private Higher Education Institutions), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) representing YBhg Dato’ Professor Dr Rujhan Mustafa, the Department’s Director General. Also present during the ceremony were YBhg Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim, Vice Chancellor of UTP; Tuan Haji Mohamed Noor Rosli Baharom, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs & Alumni, members of management from all participating institutions of higher learning, staff and students of UTP. The International Student Sports Carnival was first organised in 2007 with the objective to inculcate healthy and productive integration amongst international students from various ethnics and nationalities with local students of public and private higher learning Institutions. It is aimed to promote a competitive spirit and instil a sense of cohesion. It is also meant to produce graduates who are positive in their outlook, proactive, constructive and creative in their thinking. ACHIEVEMENT QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS 21st Century International Arts Festival-Thousand Beats of Asia The University won 6 Gold Awards and 3 Silver Awards in the 21st Century International Arts Festival-Thousand Beats of Asia organised by the Cultural Arts Development Singapore. The event was held at the Genting Highlands Convention Centre from 21 – 24 November 2011 and UTP was represented by 57 members of the Chinese Orchestra and the Performing Arts Group (UPAG). The objectives of this festival are: • To promote arts, music and culture internationally • To inculcate the appreciation for fine arts • To promote cultural exchange amongst participants • To provide a platform to showcase their talent A total of 5000 performers including professional and amateur groups from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, China and the Philippines participated in the four categories: Dance, Band, Chinese Orchestra and Choral. The University’s Cultural Group also took the opportunity to foster networking with other performing arts groups since the festival also included other activities such as workshops, seminar, discussions and meetings. The UTP Performing Arts Group (UPAG) won 2 Gold Awards in the Malay Dance category, 1 Gold in the Chinese Dance Category and 1 Gold in the Indian Dance Category. The UTP Chinese Orchestra won 2 Gold awards and 3 Silver Awards in the Ensemble Chinese Orchestra Category. Champion In The Dhiirathi Nakshatra 2011 16 members of UTP Bhangra Group (Gajjdi Jawani) won the first place in the annual dance and singing competition “Dhiirathi Nakshatra 2011” organised by the Indian Cultural and Language Society (ICLS) of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Kampar Campus in collaboration with Pertubuhan Artis-Artis India Malaysia (PAAIM) held on 19 November 2011 at Seri Sedaya International School Hall, Subang Jaya, Selangor. The team brought back home RM500 and a trophy in the dance category while HELP University College was the first runner up followed by Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology University (APITT) as the second runner up. Special commend was given for the coordination and the props used such as the additional dholists (drums). 11 RESEARCH & INNOVATION QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS Official Opening of The Centralized Analytical Laboratory (CAL) The Centralized Analytical Laboratory (CAL) was officially opened by Puan Juniwati Rahmat Hussin, Vice President of Human Resource Management, PETRONAS on 15 October 2011. The event was attended by members of UTP’s Management Committee and personnel from CAL. The ceremony began with ribbon cutting in front of CAL’s office followed by a tour of the lab facilities. The Centralized Analytical Laboratory (CAL) is one of the service centres established under the Research & Innovation division of UTP. It is equipped with state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation for microscopy, spectroscopy and chromatography analyses. CAL aims to promote research excellence by ensuring that the requested analytical services comply with international standards and is timely delivered to all customers. The centre was set up to serve the research needs of UTP researchers as well as service requirements by external parties from industries, research organisations and other universities. CAL provides analytical services for various projects in green technology, solar energy, nanotechnology, oil, gas and petrochemicals disciplines. Design & Prototyping Centre (DPC) A Service Centre under the Advanced Technology & Innovation Centre (ATIC), DPC is readily available to support key components for UTP Research communities and industries. and is located at Block 16. DPC offers: Concept Development – Project Design and Engineering, Detail Drawings, 3-Dimensional Solid Modeling, Conceptual Styling and Feasibility, Design for Manufacturing and Assembly. Testing & Design of Experiments (DOE) – Full Programme Management, Experimental Setup & Support, System & Component Testing, Quality Improvement, Product Development & Evaluation, Structural Analysis / Finite Element Analysis (FEA). 12 EVENTS QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS Visit by Schlumberger Asia President 15 December 2011 marked another milestone between Schlumberger and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS when Ms Hinda Gharbi, Schlumberger Asia President made her maiden visit to the University with the objective of enhancing the collaboration between UTP and Schlumberger. The entourage included En. Azhar Abdullah, Schlumberger Asia VP Testing (SLB-UTP Ambassador) and Mr. Rasik Bahadur, Schlumberger Asia VP Human Resources. To mark the occasion, UTP Vice Chancellor YBhg Datuk Dr. Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim and Ms Hinda Gharbi launched the Ambassador Programme between the University and Schlumberger by signing a plaque. Among highlights of the visit was a presentation by Ms Gharbi on “The Oil and Gas Industry – Creativity and Innovation Towards Excellence” which was attended by more than 200 staff and students. The Schlumberger entourage also visited the Information Resource Centre (IRC), SEACARL and EOR Labs. Towards the end of the visit, YBhg Datuk Dr. Zainal Abidin and Ms Gharbi officially opened the UTP-Schlumberger Alcove, located at Pocket D. MUHIBBAH – UTP Prestigious Scholarship Programme In Cambodia took place at the head office of Muhibbah Engineering (Cambodia) in Mondial Centre, Phnom Penh. On 19 November 2011, UTP marked another significant smart partnership with one of the best construction engineering companies in Malaysia, Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd (MEB). MEB has awarded ‘Muhibbah-UTP Prestigious Scholarship’ to two students to further their studies in UTP. The event The scholarship recipients will pursue their studies in Civil Engineering and Petroleum Engineering programmes. Furthermore, Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd. had agreed to provide two scholarships per year to Cambodian students to study at UTP for the next five years. The scholarship was presented by the Executive Director of Muhibbah Engineering (Cambodia) Co. Ltd, Oknha Khieng Hann. The event was highlighted by the local media and was given wide publicity by the local TV stations and newspapers. The scholarship awarded to these students is the contribution from Muhibbah Group and UTP to the people of Cambodia towards enhancing their human resource capabilities through education. 13 EVENTS QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS Establishment of UTP Alumni Thailand International Chapter With the increasing number of international graduates, the Career Advisory and Alumni Unit (CAAU) has established its 7th international chapter in Thailand. The official establishment of UTP Alumni Thailand Chapter (TAA) took place in the city of Hat Yai, Thailand on 11 December 2011 and was witnessed by Tn. Hj. Mohamed Noor Rosli Baharom, UTP Deputy Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs & Alumni and En Rosedi Ismail Liaison Officer of Trans Thai-Malaysia Limited (TTM). In his officiating speech, Tn. Hj. Mohamed Noor Rosli conveyed his hope that this 7th UTP Alumni International Chapter would do well and be active in the future especially in giving back to their alma mater and the society. TAA has conducted activities such as regular visits to UTP to assist Thai students, and has conducted English and Engineering Workshops to school students in Thailand. TAA has expressed its hope in playing a more vital role in the future to complete the cycle of Energy Receive, Energy Return. The fruitful event was concluded with a sharing session among UTP representatives and the participants about the roles of CAAU and alumni in increasing the level of employability among UTP graduates. Earlier, on 10 December 2011, the University’s Career Advisory & Alumni Unit together with the University’s Alumni Association, TAA and the Thailand Student Association (TSA) had collaborated in a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme held in Hat Yai. The programme took place at the SOS Children Village, which is under an international umbrella organisation, SOS – Kinderdorf International – an independent, non-governmental international development organisation which has been working to meet the needs and protect the interests and rights of children since 1949. The village focuses on orphans, abandoned and needy children. In this half day programme, the alumni members conducted various kinds of games and competitions for the children, which consisted of inspirational and motivational elements. The University’s Alumni Association and Career Advisory & Alumni Unit also donated various sports equipment to the SOS Children Village. Establishment of UTP Alumni, Johor Branch UTP Alumni welcomed another addition to its family through the establishment of its branch in Pasir Gudang, Johor on 9 December 2011. Ms Penny Goh, representative of UTP Alumni Association shared on the association’s activities. En Talhah Hasan, Senior Manager of Student Support Services Department officiated the event. In conjunction with the establishment, the Career Advisory & Alumni Unit and the Alumni Association took the opportunity to visit ‘Persatuan Kebajikan Darul Hanan’ in Pasir Gudang. During the visit, they also donated story books, reference books for SPM, stationery and sports equipment. En Talhah also led the discussion with Puan Nurhayani Bt Islam, the principal of the centre on how the Alumni members in Johor can play a role in helping the students to improve their studies. 14 CSR / EVENTS QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS UTP Shares Solar Technology with Local Community Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) donated a mobile solar electricity generator designed by a team of students and lecturers to SMK Seri Iskandar recently. The team was headed by Associate Professor Dr Balbir Singh Mahinder Singh from UTP’s Academic Central Services. He said that apart from harnessing the power of solar energy into usable electricity, the mobile generator will also serve the purpose of providing awareness related to the use of solar energy as an alternative source of energy. SMK Seri Iskandar would be strategic for the dissemination of information regarding how solar electricity can be generated, to the students, teachers, parents and other members of the surrounding community. According to Dr Balbir, the solar powered electricity generator can provide up to 500 Watts of electrical power. During the day, the electricity generated can be utilised directly and battery is used for storing the electrical energy to be used at night. The amount of energy that can be stored in the battery is approximately 1.2 kWh. A fully charged battery can light up to six 14 Watt energy saving bulbs, throughout the night. The mobile generator can be used to supply electricity to power up the school’s Science Garden. Students, teachers, parents and member of the public can utilise the solar electricity to power up their appliances via the power outlets available at the mobile generator. The school is also planning to utilise the mobile generator for teaching of Physics and Living skills subjects. The initiative is part of UTP’s Corporate Social Responsibility projects that focuses on the latest technology for the betterment of the community and towards nurturing innovative minds. UTP Vice-Chancellor, Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Hj Kasim handed over the mobile solar electricity generator to the school’s principal, Puan Mashitah Ismail on 17 November 2011 at the school. The event was witnessed by district education officers, UTP staff, teachers and students. Giving back to the community through research and innovation has always been emphasised by UTP, as it aspires to be a Leader in Technology Education and Centre for Creativity and Innovation as well as to produce well-rounded graduates who can become the pillars of national development in the future. Faculty of Engineering Away Day Faculty of Engineering (FoE), Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS has organised its inaugural Away Day Programme which was held from 18 to 20 December 2011 at Teluk Dalam Resort, Pulau Pangkor. Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Heads and Deputy Heads of Department (DHoDs) of respective faculties; Chemical, Civil, Electrical & Electronic, Mechanical and Petroleum Engineering as well as Petroleum Geoscience Departments attended this Away Day Programme. ahead in our journey to become a Research University (RU) by 2013. The objective of this Away Day Programme is to strengthen ties among the departments in the Faculty of Engineering. Prof Ir Dr Muhd Fadhil Nuruddin, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, in his opening remarks said that the strong bond between the faculty members is very crucial in order to form a dynamic team to face any challenges Prof Ir Dr Muhd Fadhil in his closing remarks thanked all participants for attending this important programme. It was a fruitful discussion in an informal environment and it is hoped that the cooperation will continue further in our future endeavour to support our university’s aspiration. The programme started on the first day with Engineering Faculty Academic Committee (EFAC) meeting on 18 Dec 2011 followed by a Strategic Workshop on the second day to streamline and synergise strategies as well as initiatives in achieving UTP’s target to achieve RU status in 2013. The final day was allocated to conduct the PPA review session for the faculty level. 15 QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS Menggapai Impian 2011 The University places great emphasis in undertaking its social responsibility towards the surrounding communities. This has been one of the best main initiatives taken by the University to reach to the communities outside the campus and one of the ways to keep up with the spirit of sharing and giving to those in need. Organised for the 5th time this year, ‘Menggapai Impian’ was held on 20 December 2011 with the aim to enhance the learning experience of the underprivileged in order for them to enjoy a better learning environment. This year 57 students consisting of both primary & secondary level from 3 orphanages, Persatuan Kebajikan KanakKanak Yatim Rumah Wawasan Manjung, (non Muslim), Pertubuhan Anak-anak Yatim Diamond Hope, Ayer Tawar (non Muslim) and Rumah Anak Yatim Darussalam, Tambun were invited to the programme. Under this initiative, UTP staff sponsored a minimum of RM100.00 in the form of school uniforms, shoes, stationery and school bags for the new school year. Besides enjoying their gifts, lunch and balloon games, we hope that the contribution will also lessen the burden of the children and spur them to study hard. 16 CSR
