August - Suffolk Archers
THE ARROW Suffolk archers and bowhunters news letter Volume 1 Issue 31 Editor Jill Goeckner From the President The summer heat and humidity have really had an impact on our activities at Suffolk Archers, but while the weather may have slowed us down, it hasn’t dampened the spirit of our archers. The month of June was especially busy with our members sanely and wisely consuming volumes of water while participating in the Long Island Traditional, The Raccoon Shoot, Dealer Days, our Lodge Dedication, and our 2nd Annual Suffolk Archers Family Day. In July, the heat struck again at the Knock-a-Block. I would like to personally thank all the members who helped set-up, and make all of these events “happen.” For the record, these events really don’t “just happen” - several small groups of our members put in a lot of time and sweat to make them as successful as they are. As future events approach, I would like you to think about getting involved and lending a hand; volunteers are always welcome and needed. Photo courtesy of Stephanie Pierno. As part of the Lodge Dedication Day & SA Family Picnic on June 28th, the above photo was placed inside the time capsule, to be unearthed in 2054. At our Family Day/Lodge Dedication, we placed a time capsule containing club documents, records, photographs and personal archery items, many donated by our members and member craftsmen, in a vault prepared at the base of our flagpole. Placed atop the vault to seal it was a boulder moved from elsewhere on our property. The vault is to be unearthed in April 2054 at the 100th Anniversary of Suffolk Archers. Present at the brief ceremony were several members who will most likely still be around to enjoy looking back 44 years. AUGUST 2010 “Down the Pike” we still have The Hunter’s Rendezvous, Hunter’s Shoot, Club Championship, Raccoon Shoot #2, a few Field Shoots, and The Silver Arrow. Come on out and enjoy the fun, and if you have the time, give the event chairmen a hand. Don’t forget that Workday #3 is on the August 22nd. If you have a work commitment to fill, please be there. Our next General Membership Meeting will be at THE LODGE on August 18th at 8:00 PM, and the October Meeting will be at The LODGE as well. Don’t forget our Game Dinner on September 11th at the “Country Club.” There are still a few tickets left at $35 per person. Stay Safe, Mike Jones From the Editor It’s easy to forget to drink enough water when the humidity is so high that we feel as though we’re swimming in it. However, we cannot stress enough how important it is stay hydrated. Dehydration is completely preventable yet causes an inordinate number of deaths every year. Dehydration means your body is short the amount of water and fluids it should have and can either be caused by losing too much fluid (as you’re sweating the climb up the hills at the range) or not drinking enough water or fluids, or even both simultaneously. Interestingly enough, in people over age 50, the body’s thirst sensation diminishes and continues diminishing with age; thus, many older people suffer symptoms of dehydration without even realizing it, which is why many severe dehydration cases occur with the very young and old. Don’t risk it and save a plastic bottle from ending up in a landfill by carrying your own stainless steel or BPA free plastic water bottle around with you as you brave the heat! It’s YOUR club; make the most of it! Jill Goeckner The Board Room CLUB SHOOT RESULTS From the Table Our Members’ Safety Comes First It has come to the attention of the Board, that there are 2 very important safety issues that members should be reminded of. First, the deer herd in the "field" behind the Lodge is only to be shot at "straight on." The targets are to be shot at only in perpendicular plane (straight on, left side of field); there are to be no angular shots taken at the targets. LONG ISLAND TRADITIONAL In early June, the LI Traditional Shoot enticed 110 recurve and longbow shooters to our club to try their skills. It was a beautiful day and everyone had a great time. We had traditionalists that traveled from New Jersey, Connecticut and Southern New York to attend. A big thanks to Phil Bocketti and his crew for doing a great job. Second, the only AUTHORIZED parking area on our grounds is the paved area at the "top of the road" (by the tower.) Parking ANYWHERE ELSE on the property is at YOUR OWN RISK. The club WILL NOT be responsible for ANY DAMAGE to ANY VEHICLE not parked in the paved, designated area, as per our insurance policy. Special thanks goes out to Joe Sesack for running the kitchen in the sweltering heat and for Mike Jones and Don Pecora for helping set up the kitchen. Photo courtesy of Stephanie Pierno. Modern Class Remembering Walter Stanley Quick 1st Wai Ng 2nd Mark Webb 3rd Mark Field A commemorative bench was recently placed by the Lodge in memory of longtime Suffolk Archers member Walter Quick, who passed away on November 3, 2008. “Thank you” to Walter’s friends for their compassion and generous donation in tribute to their good friend. Traditional Class First Flight 1st Arthur Lipinski 2nd Joe Munno 3rd Mark Magro From the Range Committee There are several important projects scheduled for the upcoming summer Work Day so come on Sunday, August 22, rain or shine. Bagels & coffee will be served at 8am. This is your opportunity to satisfy your work commitment and come out and help your club to be the best it can be. Second Flight 1st Paul Schmidt 2nd Jeff Dunn 3rd Mike Ciccone 2 The Hunters Lair Tackle Tips The “Dog Days of Summer” are upon us, but the anticipation of hunting season is about to become a reality. Along with that comes the work of getting ready for the upcoming season. Check your gear or get to the pro shop and get you bows checked out. If you plan to order new gear, do it now. Hey, folks! Hope you are enjoying your summer! Remember not to leave your equipment in the car. High temperatures can cause the materials in your bow to degrade and damage and/or warp it. Laminates can become unglued and result in a dangerous situation the next time you nock an arrow. On Sunday, August 29th, SA will be hosting our 3rd BOWHUNTERS’ RENDEZVOUS. Mark your calendar and tell your friends, member or non member. This event is open to the public and there is no charge. As with all events here at Suffolk Archers, the BHR comes with work. Anyone who signed up for this event please contact me — we always need more help!!!!! Specifically, we are looking for any bow hunters who would like to man one of our stations, including: blood trailing, shot placement, bow hunters’ gear, calling and rattling, tree stand safety, scents and scent control, or anything else you might want to suggest and would like to do. Now is also the time to start making sure your hunting equipment is up to par, with the fall season just a couple months away. Make sure you get some extra practice time in so that when the time comes to harvest that trophy, both you and your equipment are ready. If there are any changes you are considering making to your equipment, now is the time to do it, in order to give you extra time to become accustomed to the difference and not on Opening Day. As always, make sure you hydrate your self when you are out there in this stifling weather! Bring a water bottle with you as you walk the range; if you start feeling thirsty, you’re already 2% dehydrated! In addition, If you have anything you would like to sell or trade bring it on the 29th — the BHR is also a great swap meet opportunity for members and non members alike. We will have a area specifically set up for this; contact me if you have any questions. Have a safe & healthy season! — Fletch SADMC has received the DEC permits for Green Acres Farm. If you did not attend the SADMC meeting on July 26th, you have missed the opportunity to participate in this year’s SADMC season due to the fact that participants’ names needed to be placed on the permit before it was finalized. Stay tuned to this newsletter for next year’s opportunities. Don’t miss our upcoming ALL-MEMBERS MEETING WED AUGUST 18 8PM AT THE RANGE Featuring Special Guest Speaker If there are any new members that are looking to get involved in bow hunting, please don’t hesitate to give me or any member of the Bow Hunting Committee a call — we are here to help you take that first step. If you need to attend a Hunter Safety Course, make arrangements “NOW” as these classes fill up quickly. The Arrowhead Man Returns Don Schmidt will return to Suffolk Archers to give us another interesting and informative talk on the stone arrowheads and other Paleolithic artifacts used by the ancient people who once inhabited Long Island and the very land that we roam shooting our modern (more or less) archery tackle. He will bring some interesting examples from his extensive collection for us to see. Come to the meeting & be amazed by objects made by people thousands of years ago.
