With its highly reliable chronograph and bezel with tachymetric scale, it allows drivers to perfectly measure average speeds up to 400 kilometres or miles per hour, as they choose. An icon eternally joined in name and function to the high-performance world of motor sport. Introduction 3 Style of the Daytona a chronograph made for the road With its state-of-the-art technology, evocative heritage and sporting aura, the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona swiftly became an iconic watch. Its dial carries in red letters the name “Daytona” – the most famous motor racing circuit in the United States. Available in 904 L steel, 18 ct gold and Rolesor versions with a variety of dials, robust Oyster bracelets as well as elegant leather straps both equipped with high security Oysterlock clasps, the Cosmograph Daytona is tailored for the track and the concert hall. Style 4 Function of the Daytona the 400 scale for speed The Cosmograph Daytona’s engraved bezel functions as a tachymeter by measuring elapsed time over a given distance. Combined with the chronograph, its scale provides a perfect instrument for measuring speed of up to 400 units per hour, whether expressed in kilometres or miles. Function 5 Function of the Daytona on-board instrumentation The Cosmograph Daytona was designed as a high-precision personal timing tool for drivers in endurance races. Rolex resorted to pioneering yet elegantly simple engineering, by incorporating fewer components than in a standard chronograph and enhance reliability. The central sweep seconds hand allows an accurate reading of 1/8 second, while the two counters on the dial display elapsed time in hours and minutes. Drivers can accurately map out their track times and tactics without fail: the Daytona is a watch for winners. Function 6 Function of the Daytona start, drive, stop At Rolex, form and function work in harmony. The Daytona’s chronograph functions are activated by pushers that screw down like the winding crown when they are not in use, guaranteeing waterproofness to 100 metres. One press to start, stop or reset the chronograph produces a crisp, clear click that was perfected using the most advanced technology. Rolex watchmakers also perfected the mechanism to suit the ideal finger pressure on the pushers, and engineered it to provide an instantaneous and accurate start to the timing without sacrificing reliability. Function 7 Spirit of the Daytona history of the chronograph In 1935, while automobile technology was still in its early stages, British daredevil Sir Malcolm Campbell, with a Rolex on his wrist, set the world land speed record and entered history by exceeding 300 miles (484 kilometres) per hour in his famous “Bluebird”. Rolex unveiled the Cosmograph Daytona in 1963, in tribute to its growing ties with motor sport and speed. The rest, as they say, is history. 1935 the origins Spirit 8 Spirit of the Daytona global partnership with formula 1® Rolex has forged a long-term partnership with Formula 1® as Global Partner and Official Timepiece, reinforcing its long-standing commitment to motor racing and its support of world sport at the very highest level. This new association with the pinnacle of motor sports brings together two leaders in their fields who share a passion for performance, precision, excellence and superlative engineering. Spirit 9 Spirit of the Daytona rolex 24 at daytona In the late 1950s, Rolex formed a lasting alliance with one of North America’s most renowned circuits, the Daytona International Speedway. A bond celebrated by the Cosmograph Daytona since the 1960s. Today, Rolex sponsors the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the only race of its kind in North America. It sits alongside the 24 Hours of Le Mans as one of the most famous and revered endurance races in the world, and draws a cult following that simply calls the race “the Rolex”. Spirit 10 Spirit of the Daytona the 24 hours of le mans The oldest and one of the most prestigious motor races in the world has withstood the test of time: it still pushes man and modern machine to their limits. Tradition, technology, endurance and excellence, all the ingredients are there for Rolex’s support. Every year in June, the circuit and a closed stretch of nearby public road is taken over by the 24-hour race as the world’s greatest sports car drivers do battle through night and day, come rain or shine. Spirit 11 Features the parachrom hairspring In a mechanical watch, the oscillator is the guardian of time. Conventional oscillator hairsprings are made of ferromagnetic alloys, leaving them vulnerable to magnetic fields, temperature variations and shocks that interfere with their precision. After years of research, Rolex created the blue Parachrom hairspring, which is finer than a human hair. Crafted from a highly stable paramagnetic alloy that includes niobium and zirconium, it is insensitive to magnetic fields and up to 10 times more resistant to shocks. Historically, the unique blue colour of the hairspring has been a sign of prestige reserved for only the most accurate timepieces. Features 12 Features 4130 movement The Cosmograph Daytona is equipped with calibre 4130, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Its architecture incorporates far fewer components than a standard chronograph, thereby enhancing the movement’s reliability. Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 4130 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for highprecision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. The chronograph movement features a Parachrom hairspring, offering greater resistance to shocks and to temperature variations. Features 13 Features certified swiss chronometer The four simple words Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified on a Rolex watch dial mean that the very movement inside the timepiece has endured 15 days and nights of testing by COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres – Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), an independent notfor-profit association. To receive COSC certification as a Swiss chronometer, a watch must demonstrate extreme precision in a variety of positions and temperatures. Rolex is unique in the industry: this is the standard level of quality required of every Rolex wristwatch movement.
