The Inland Empire’s Guide to Fun
Time to burn rubber
Racing fans will rejoice this coming Labor Day as some of the biggest racing action of the
year arrives at California Speedway. We highlight the two big days of racing on page 8.
Understandably, this event may get you itching to try your own hand at burning up a track.
Before you hock your home to buy a high-performance car and pit crew, you’ll be happy to
hear that kart racing has arrived in the Inland Empire to answer your prayers. Kart racing is
the “little league” of auto racing and is so accessible even children can do it. For more on
where you can get strapped in, see our article starting on page 9.
You may notice that we’ve added a few new sections to this issue:“For the Kids” and
“Golf.” We are responding to reader requests with more information on what you want. Look
for these sections to grow in the future. If you want to put in your two-cents, fill out our
reader response form on page 11.You may even win a free subscription to IER!
As usual, have a good time this month!

SUMMER ADVENTURE
Ren Faire a ‘Queenly’ event
Go desert this summer
Travel back in time to a period of lively people,
music and merriment at the 20th Annual
Renaissance Arts Festival in Long Beach.
The Festival takes place at the Queen Mary
Special Events Park, located adjacent to the Queen
Mary in Downtown Long Beach on Saturday and
Sunday, August 28 and 29 from 10 am to 6 pm.
The Festival is a good opportunity to
get out of town and try to beat the summer Inland Empire heat. Lords and Ladies

Queen Elizabeth I of England, a time of
pageantry and merriment.
There is much to do and see at the
Renaissance Festival. Be there for an historical weekend with Elizabeth the 1st,
Queen of England, her Royal Court, and
people from the entire known world. Be
part of the pageantry, taste traditional
foods, feel the heat of battles between the encampments.Watch artisans and crafts
people recreate the feeling of living in that time, hear the music and watch live entertainment. Shop the vendors for unique and exotic wares of that period. Lose yourself
to another time, another place, if only for awhile.
Tickets are $12 for Adults, $9 for Seniors 55+, $7 for Children 5 to 12 and
Children under 5 are free. Advance sale tickets are available for $9 a day, or $17 for
the weekend by calling (562) 438-9903.

and seniors. Plenty of parking adjacent to the event is available; there is an $8 parking
fee.

Make tracks to the beach
August is the Right Time to Take the Beach Train
T
he June gloom is now a distant
memory. The hottest days of
the summer are upon us and
taking a break by taking in the
cool waves of the Pacific is the
perfect way to spend a summer weekend
day. Better yet, there is an alternative to
fighting traffic on the 91 Freeway and
searching for a parking spot.
The alternative is to take the Beach
Train, which is offered by the Riverside
County Transportation Commission (RCTC).
The Beach Train will run every Saturday
and Sunday between Aug. 1 and Aug. 22..
Additional trains will run on Sept. 18, Sept.
25, Oct. 2 and Oct. 3. The round-trip fare is
$16 for adults and $11 for kids under 16.
“The train itself is an attraction for many
people because it allows people to socialize
and make new friends,” said RCTC
Executive Director Eric Haley.
“That’s especially true when the train
is headed to the beach on a warm sum-
mer day.”
In addition to providing summer recreation trips, Haley also hopes that positive
experiences on the Beach Train will convince people to take the train during the
week too.
“For many people the Beach Train offers
the first opportunity to take a train in
Southern California,” said Haley. “Once
people take the train to the Beach, they
start considering whether they can take the
train to work too.”
Metrolink commuter train service, which
provides its trains to RCTC for the Beach
Train, offers commuter service from San
Bernardino and Riverside Counties to Los
Angeles and Orange Counties. Stations in
Orange and Los Angeles Counties are located next to major worksites and can provide
an attractive alternative to fighting freeway
traffic.
For more information on Metrolink,
check out www.metrolinktrains.com or call

Labor Day Racing
NASCAR racing heats up
at California Speedway
T
his Labor Day
weekend is
sure to get
your engine
revving, thanks to a
weekend of racing at the
California Speedway.
The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup
Series roars into the Speedway
for the Inaugural “Finish
Under the Lights” Pop Secret
500 on Sunday, September 5. Also
racing at the superspeedway is the
NASCAR Busch Series in the
Target House 300 on Saturday,
September 4.
This is the second
NASCAR race ever held
in a single-season at
California Speedway
and the first time the
Inland Empire has
seen two NASCAR
races in one year
since 1987, one
year before
Riverside
International Raceway closed.
The Labor Day weekend festivities at
California Speedway are a high-speed
thrill ride, whether you’re a racing aficionado or not. NASCAR stars like Jeff
Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Southern
Californian Jimmie Johnson will compete
in the 43-car field for 500 miles in their
pursuit for the 2004 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup
Series Championship.
These races are popular, so don’t delay
in getting your ticket. Since the speedway
opened in 1997, each race has sold out.
More than 120,000 people watch
NASCAR's premier series take to the 2mile, D-shaped oval. It’s a race right
down to the wire with 500-miles of adrenaline-pumping action.
This year, you can join seven-time
NASCAR Cup champion Richard Petty as
he serves as Grand Marshal for the Pop
Secret 500. Saturday’s action will feature
the Busch race and the Miller Lite Rock 'n
Racing Concert.
Also, make sure you come out for the
first ever “Fontana Race Week,” featuring
driver appearances.
California Speedway, “America’s
Ultimate Race Place,” features 92,000
grandstand seats and camping in 1,800
infield reserved RV spaces. NASCAR, IRL,
AMA, GrandAmerican and Historics compete at the speedway annually.
The speedway is home to racing action
all year-round, not just during the big
events. With nearly 300 calendar days of
track activity, there aren’t too many “off”

days. The facility remains busy with a
variety of track rentals from driving
schools to test sessions to club events.
The speedway’s road courses have benefited a number of local racing organizations from motorcycles to sports cars, giving them a premier facility to compete or
test their skills on. In addition, the speedway has been featured in a number of
commercials, photo shoots and Hollywood
movies – most recently “NASCAR 3D: The
IMAX Experience.”
California Speedway is an economic
stronghold in Fontana and the Inland
Empire. According to an economic study,
the entire impact of the speedway’s events
and daily operations in 2003 totaled
$135.7 million, with approximately $84.7
million coming from a single NASCAR
NEXTEL Cup Series weekend. R
Get your own racing
So, you want to be a race car driver ...
The roar of the engines, the smell of burning rubber, the thrill of speed ... experiencing
NASCAR racing at the California Speedway this Labor Day weekend may be enough to get
you thinking, “Yeah, I could do that.”
Before you run off and hire a pit crew, however, you may want to check your options.
The Inland Empire offers numerous opportunities for you to satisfy your racing cravings.
Kart racing isn’t your traditional go-cart, however. Attaining speeds of up to 100mph,
modern kart racing is considered the “minor leagues” of NASCAR racing, offering a similar
feel but with greater safety and at an affordable price.

Moran and his son Rocky Moran Jr. Both come from an extensive racing background and have spent a good number of years
in the go-kart scene. Most of their go-kart racing was done near

go-kart years were some of their best years of racing.

Northern
California's loss is the
Inland Empire's gain.
Art and Nancy True
enjoyed over 12 years
of success with their
mobile zoo service in
Northern California.
Then, they decided to
"slow the pace down"
and relocated to the
Palm Springs area,
specifically Sky Valley.
But they brought
with them their experience and their lifelong love of animals.
Their Zoo 4U, a
mobile zoo, has
become a party favorite for any special occasion, including birthdays, churches, schools
and corporate events. The "zoo" currently consists of chickens, rabbits, ducks, goats, a
pot-bellied piglet, Florida tortoise, frogs, snakes and lizards. In addition to the petting portion of their business, they also give one-hour educational lectures.
The Zoo 4U mobile unit has air conditioning and lighting for any weather or time. For
information, call 760-288-4455.

Catch a modern-day troubadour
Michael Ryan is an entertainer in the old
sense of the word, a self-styled “troubadour”
who brings his guitar talents to intimate settings.
With four nationally distributed CDs,
weekly appearances in Claremont and concert
performances, Ryan brings his stylings to many
audiences.
A true Renaissance musician, Ryan brings a
range of talents to his fans, including classical
Spanish pieces, Irish folk songs, light blues
along with his own original works.
At the Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theater
in Claremont, audiences enjoy Ryan’s music
while they dine on a formal meal prior to
watching a musical. The setting is perfect to
Ryan’s style of play, a personal forum where he
can connect with his audience.
You can catch Michael at various spots
around the Inland Empire, including:Walter’s
Restaurant in Claremont on Wednesdays, 69pm (909-624-4914); Casa de Salsa restaurant
in Claremont Thursdays 6:30-9:30pm (909445-1200), and at the Candlelight Pavilion
Dinner Theater in Claremont, Friday through
Sunday, for the pre-dinner show (909-6261254).
You can also hear Michael Ryan on the
Chef Talk radio show every Saturday from 5-5:30pm on 590am, KLIE.

performed by local DJ Severe and the band Somethin’ Smooth.

GETTING HEALTHY
EDITOR’S NOTE: The following are articles in our ongoing Summer
series of weight-loss success stories.
Just six short weeks ago I never would have thought I could
accomplish what I have. Thanks to Chris and the Curves
Challenge I have lost almost 15 pounds and numerous inches and
my clothes fit me once again. I am on the right road to being thin
again.
Until six years ago, I had been thin all my life. Then, I experienced several back-to-back life changing events and I began to
eat as a way to deal with the stress. I “learned” how to comfort
myself with food. I continued to “nurture” myself with food until I
weighed more than I could imagine.
The day after Chris opened her Downtown Riverside Curves
I joined. For almost 1 1/2 years I exercised regularly at Curves
and learned how to incorporate exercise into my daily life. I didn’t lose much weight; I still had not learned how to control my
eating. I am a Registered Dietician and I knew how to lose weight
and keep it off. Why couldn’t I?
When Chris announced the first Curves Challenge, I jumped
at the chance to join. I signed up but the closer the start date
came the more anxious I became. During the five days prior to
the “Big Challenge” I psyched myself up using a lot of positive
self-talk: “You can do this, Laurie. You have accomplished much in
you life; you will be able to accomplish this, too.You want to succeed bad enough, you will be successful!”
And, I have been successful, thanks to Michelle and Chris and
my Curves Challenge buddies. During the Weekly Lesson #5 I
had a revelation. I learned that to be truly happy and able to cope
with life’s challenges and be successful at losing weight and keeping it off, I had to learn how to nurture myself in meaningful ways
that lead to high self-esteem and self-actualization. I had to find
positive ways to “nurture” myself rather than relying on food as
temporary “nourishment.” I finally realized that I must do the following nurturing activities every day: read my “Daily Affirmation”
out loud every morning; put my needs ahead of others’ for
awhile; do something nice for myself; share my feelings and needs
with my family and friends; remind myself of what I am thankful
for and always let God be there for me; take a walk outside and
enjoy the nature around me when I am stressed and feel the urge
to eat.

Curves, 3537 Main St., Riverside. (909) 276-7100
Lisa Souza joined Curves in Oct. of 2003. She started out
wanting to lose weight and become healthier. Little did she know
where this path would take her. She at first focused on just the
fitness part and lost six pounds and 8 inches. She then decided
that working out just wasn’t enough, so she joined Curves’
“You’ve Got the Power” weight loss challenge.
Lisa has now participated in two six-week Challenges and is
planning on a third this fall. With her hard work and Curves fitness and weight loss programs she has now lost a total of 31
pounds and 37.5 inches. But she hasn’t stopped there.
Lisa still has her own personal goal of losing 30 more pounds,
but now she is a Curves staff member and is inspiring others to
reach their goals as well.
Congratulations, Lisa!
