Services: Western State Hospital is an acute care adult
psychiatric facility operated by the Commonwealth of
Kentucky. The hospital serves the 34 most western counties in
Kentucky. All referrals for admissions come from one of the
Community Mental Health Centers serving the four regions of
Western Kentucky.
The hospital is an acute care facility accredited by the Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations
(JCAHO) and certified by the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services (CMS).
The median length of stay is five days for new admissions.
Western State Hospital is one of four state-operated or statesupported acute psychiatric facilities in Kentucky.

Services: Sanctuary’s mission is threefold: to protect, to
educate, & to heal. Because our first concern is to offer
protection & safety for women & children who are victims of
family violence, we offer a comprehensive shelter program for
battered women & their dependent children 24 hrs a day/seven
days a week. Our second concern is to offer counseling &
education, which will enable victims to break the cycle of
violence. Services are available such as a 24-Hour Crisis Line;
Emergency Shelter; Counseling; Casework Services;
Advocacy; Children's Services; Community Services; Nonresidential Services; Job Program & drug/alcohol casework.

the lifesaving treatments they need.
Service area: Hopkins and Muhlenberg County
Eligibility/Cost: Road to Recovery is a free service. Patients
do not need a physician’s referral, but advance notice is
required. Patients should not assume that their Road to
Recovery driver will be able to take them to all appointments.
Road to Recovery is available on an “as needed” basis, after
other transportation options have been exhausted.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA): specially trained
volunteer citizens appointed by a judge to represent the best
interest of a child in court.
Emergency Child Care: Financial assistance based on available
funds will be made available for families in crisis who are
referred by a professional.
Kids on the Block: program used to present the issues of
physical and sexual abuse through the use of three child-size
puppets. The program primarily targets 3rd grade school
children and is available for public awareness presentations.
My Body Belongs to Me: program that teaches preschool age
& 1st grade children about the ways of preventing sexual abuse.
Nurturing Program: A weekly parenting education program
that is designed to increase empathy and parenting skills
support groups also available
Parent Alert Program: A joint effort program between local law
enforcement agencies, retail liquor outlets and FAC to deter
underage drinking.
Personal Body Safety Curriculum: This program is taught
within the Hopkins County School System in grades 1, 3,5,7,9,
and 11. The program teaches children about personal body
safety and all forms of child abuse.
Public Education and Training: Periodic programs, in-service
programs, and seminars will be conducted for the public and
professional on prevention and intervention issues facing
families and children.
Teen Outreach Program (TOP): This school-based program
involves teenagers in curriculum guided discussions linked to
volunteer their services. ATOD Group (Alcohol, Tobacco, and
