I want to remind parents that middle school students must satisfy the following requirements in
order to be promoted to the next grade level: pass 66 2/3 percent of classes (four out of six); pass
language arts and math; have a completed writing portfolio; and score apprentice or higher on the
state assessments in math and reading. Parents of students who are in danger of not satisfying all
of the requirements (based on the first three grading periods) will receive a Mid-year Status Notification.

I want to thank everyone for all of their support so far this year. We have had several successful
programs and activities held during the first four months of school. Our academic and athletic
teams are also off to a great start. I believe the success of these programs is a direct result of students, parents, and staff working together. I look forward to continued success throughout the
remainder of the year.

Another grading period is complete and the holiday season is upon us. Eighth graders are deciding
where they want to go to high school. Parents are wondering how the middle school years pass so
quickly…I know I am wondering how my little girl can be starting high school next year! Change
is happening all around us, but the thing that never seems to change is your support of Crosby‘s
students, staff and PTSA. Thank you very much for your support with our fundraiser and our
many volunteer opportunities! I am very pleased to report that our fundraiser was a big success

this year and raised $2,000 more than we had anticipated.
This will provide some great things for our kids. The amount
raised from the fall fundraiser comprises the majority of our
operating budget and it was important that we reach our goal
in order to continue our programming for the students and
the financial support of the various academic departments at
Crosby. A very special thanks to Tracey Wachter for heading up our PTSA fundraiser this year…great job Tracey!!
Also, thanks to Lori Cook and her volunteers for a very successful KY Kids Day in September, Reflections cultural arts
contest in October and Red Ribbon Week in late October.
Thanks again for your continued support. Please call me if
you have any questions or would like to volunteer in any
way. Happy holidays and enjoy your time with your families!

On November 10 Crosby hosted Rachel‘s Challenge,
an international anti-bullying and anti-violence program dedicated to teaching and challenging young
people to become part of a chain reaction passing on
Rachel‘s message of kindness and compassion. Rachel
Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School
on April 20, 1999. Shortly after the tragedy, Rachel‘s family began to speak around the world to address issues of
school violence. Crosby students had the opportunity to
view Rachel‘s life and message through the writings in her
personal diary as well as stories told by family and friends.
In addition to Rachel‘s Challenge, Crosby staff and students
have spent time learning to identify bullying, the negative
effects of bullying, and learning how to respond appropriately to bullying related issues.
Crosby, like all JCPS schools, has a zero tolerance policy
for any form of bullying. Please review the school bullying
policy found on page 10 of the Crosby Student Handbook.
We want Crosby Middle School to be a safe, fun, learning
environment where all students feel valued.

Authorization to give Medication
Before school personnel can administer any type of medicine, including aspirin or other over the counter pain relievers provided by parents,
we must have a signed affidavit on file that gives your permission for personnel to dispense medication. All forms must be signed by a notary
public. Please help us by observing these guidelines:

The medicine should be delivered by the parent/guardian to the office with complete instructions and in the original container with the
prescription label attached. You are also required to pick up any remaining medication at the end of the treatment.





We request that medication not be sent to school with students. If you must, please put the medication bottle in a sealed envelope.
Please send a minimum supply only and notify us regarding medicine needing refrigeration.
We must be notified in writing of reaction symptoms which may occur before or after any medication is taken.
Except in extreme emergencies, AM medication should be taken at home.
Unless the school is notified, medication may be administered within 45 minutes before or after the time you indicate. If students arrive
late or leave early they may miss a dose.
NEVER advise your child to keep medication in a locker, purse, or backpack for the day. Medication, including over-thecounter, must be stored in the office for the safety of all students.
If you have any questions, please call 485-8235. Thank you for your efforts to help us maintain the safe administration of
medication. Your cooperation makes a big difference!

Individual Learning Plans
6 , 7 and 8th graders have been or will be working on
their Individual Learning Plans throughout the winter
months. Students and parents may access this through
JCPS On-line at home through the JCPS website. They
will use the same process to log-on at home as they learn
at school. Parent Usernames and Passwords and instructions were sent home with the second report card.
The middle school student promotion policy requires students to pass 66 2/3% of classes, (which is equal to 4 of 6
courses); two of those classes passed MUST be Language
Arts and Math. Additionally, students must pass four of the
six grading interims to pass a year-long course. Final grades
will be determined by averaging the quality point equivalents of the six interim grades. These requirements must be
met in order to be promoted to the next grade.
High School Applications
The deadline to submit an application for a high school Optional and Magnet program is January 7, 2011.
The form must be sent to:

Counselors’ Tip of the Month – Technology Safety
Parents, now more than ever, we need to be aware of what
our children are seeing, to whom they are talking and texting,
as well as what they are sharing online and through their cell
phones. By nature, adolescents are curious and may go to a
web-site that a ―friend‖ shared with them, or chat/text with a
new ―friend.‖ Students have access to extremely inappropriate websites and could find themselves in dangerous situations by chatting with pedophiles pretending to be middle
school aged children.
To Do List for Parents
 Talk with your child about expectations for going online
and/or texting.
 Discuss the importance of not giving personal information on the internet or responding to text messages from
people that you do not know.
 Check your child‘s history, be aware of where they are
going online and read received and sent text messages.
 Encourage your child to communicate with you if they
are uncomfortable about something that they experienced
while online.
We Need YOUR Assistance
with Traffic
We continue to need your assistance with dropping off your children in the morning and picking
them up in the afternoon. In order to ensure the
safety of our children and make this process more
efficient, please help us by doing the following:







Having your child ride the school bus if he or she receives
bus transportation
Carpooling
Arriving before 7:15 a.m. and picking up after 2:30 p.m.
Picking up your child at the Douglass Hills Community
Center or Douglass Hills Church of Christ
Being cooperative with the school staff directing traffic
Not stopping or parking along Gatehouse Lane
Obeying the 20 mph speed limit on Gatehouse Lane
THANK YOU FOR YOUR
ASSISTANCE
LOST AND FOUND
If your child has lost a coat, jacket, backpack, sweatshirt or other articles of clothing, please
come by the school and check the lost
and found in the custodian office, there
are a lot of clothes down there. Unclaimed clothing will be donated to
YOUTH SERVICES CENTER

Red Ribbon Week
Saying no to drugs is important at any age, but getting this message across to our middle school students is especially important.
Every year Crosby‘s PTSA and students participate in the Red Ribbon Week campaign.
Each day the students heard positive messages about making the right choices and saying no to drugs.
Each class was asked to decorate their homeroom classroom door. The winners for this year‘s Door
Decoration Contest were:
Sixth Grade, teacher- Shadowen, Drug Free Election theme
Seventh Grade, teacher - Little, Wizard of Oz theme
Eighth Grade, teacher - Hundley, Life is Sweet theme
These rooms will receive a donut party from Police Donuts in Middletown during homeroom on Friday, Oct. 29.
Also on Friday the students heard from speakers from Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
A special thanks to volunteers Becky Nosil and Toni Peterson for their hard work in coordinating the week‘s events. Kudos for
a job well done.
A special thanks also goes out to the following businesses and individuals for their financial and other support of the event:
Target in Middletown
The Westport Road Meijer Store
Police Donuts in Middletown
David Whitlock from the Jefferson County Constable’s Office 3rd District, who gave informational pamphlets and posters
Steve and Becky Nosil who donated a "Commitment to be Drug Free" banner that will be used by the students over two years

BOX TOPS for Education
CAMPBELL'S Labels
Here's how to earn money for Crosby:
1. Cut out your BOX TOPS.

your child's class gets credit for it)
3. Send forms/bags/envelopes to your homeroom teacher!
You can go to www.boxtops4education.com and download a
form to staple your BOX TOPS to; this makes it easier for collection and counting.
BOX TOPS are counted when they come in but are submitted
twice a year to the company. Our cut off date for the first part
of the year is October 1, 2009.

READERS WRITE
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Commentary by J.J. Stengel
Percy is twelve and goes to a school for bad kids called
Yancey Academy. One day, Percy's class went to the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York to look at Greek and
Roman stuff. During the field trip, Percy got in trouble and got
caught by Mrs. Dodds. She is really a monster called a fury. A
fury is part human and part bat. Mrs. Dodds attacked Percy
because all the gods thought he took a weapon from Zeus, the
God of the Sky.
Grover is Percy's friend and protector. He and his mother
helped Percy. He went to a safe place called Half-Blood Camp.
Percy got injured slaying a minotaur, a creature that is part ox
and part human. Annabeth took care of him and made him well.
Together, Percy, Annabeth and Grover went on a quest to
return Zeus' lightning bolt.
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Commentary by Branden Gobeli
This prelude to Lord of the Rings is good! The story is in a
medieval, forest-like setting where hobbits and dwarves are
traveling across the land to defeat a dragon named Smang. The
book had a lot of detail which helped to make the story very
interesting. I found some parts caught my eye, which is unusual
for me. The book is very long, so don't expect to read it in only
a week. If you like fantasy fiction books like Lord of the Rings,
you should get this book.
Brisingr by Christopher Paolini
Commentary by Michael Nilsen
Adventure lovers will love this amazing book!
The Dragon Rider was with the Varden but he was far from
safe. The empire attacked and the Varden barely survived. The
Dragon Rider was sent on a mission to Farthren Dur, which is
the mountain capital of the dwarves' civilization. His mission was to speed the process of picking a new king when
King Harothgar was killed. His dragon stayed with the Varden
while he was gone. They had a mental connection and longed
for each other while apart.
Challenger Team News:
Can you believe how quickly the first semester

Congratulations!
We have had a fantastic year so far. All is running smoothly.
We have such a wonderful group of kids this year! In social
studies class, we just finished a unit on government and economy and right now we are studying the different economic activities in the United States. Next, we will examine the economic
activities in Canada. Then, before Christmas break, students
will choose a Latin American country and a partner to complete
a research project that will culminate in a 5 - 8 minute presentation. Students will be required to have a visual for their project,
such as a poster, video, power point presentation, etc. They will
receive specific guidelines that clearly explain the project's
requirements.
Reminders:
Please remind your child to write in their agenda every day and
to check it when they get home from school.
Have them regularly go to yourclasspage.com/5024858235 to
check our word wall and other important information.
Students have homework at least two days a week and should
be studying for a test or quiz at least every other week.

Trailblazers Team
In Language Arts we have begun reading nonfiction plays and
preparing to perform them for the class after Thanksgiving
break. We will then write feature articles using text features on
a subject chosen by the students. We continue to track our
stocks in math and make graphs to show growth and profit.
Students are learning all about energy transfer and transformation in Science. They are applying concepts they learned in
chemistry.
We are heading into the Holiday season. We
wish the best for our students and their families.
On December 3rd, the Trailblazers are going to
see ―The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.‖ We are looking forward to this field trip. Miller Kraps, a Trailblazer, will be performing in the play. Best of luck to Miller! A big ―Thanks‖ to
Mrs. Jewell for organizing this trip. Reminder – MidTerm ExSocial Studies has been all about India and China. Our study of ams will be taken on Thursday (12/16) and Friday (12/17).

Explorer Teachers
Hello. This is Kayla Martin and Emma Lambert,
8th graders who have the privilege to write about our Voyager
team. We promised it wouldn‘t be negative…or boring. So,
here we go.
Mariners Team
The Mariner team has been hard at work! We
have enjoyed the "Dracula" performance at Actor's Theatre and are anxiously awaiting our field trip to the
IMAX theater to see "Molecules to the Max".
Please continue to check agendas for your student. Many students are not using their agendas wisely. This is a GREAT
learning tool and learning to plan early will only help them in
the future.
The Mariner teachers also have a short wish list:
we could ALL use more TISSUES - currently Mrs. Ellis is
down to her last two boxes!
Mrs. Beagle wishes she had COLORED PENCILS AND
SCOTCH TAPE.
Mrs. Ellis wishes she had GLUE STICKS.
Ms. Little wishes she had MARKERS AND COLORED
Let‘s talk about our teachers first. I mean, it‘s not a team
without our teachers. Can you imagine? Whoa. Science would
look like a mess.
MR. QUINN: Mr. Quinn is our Science teacher. I mean, you
cannot dislike Mr. Quinn. I mean, guys, he had Amoebas in his
class! Not to mention he‘s low on the homework. Unlike another teacher I know, which will not be named for the sake of
mine and Emma‘s GPA‘s.
MR. HARRIS: Mr. Harris is Mr. Harris. I mean, that‘s all we
can describe him with. HE‘S THAT AWESOME! He is our
Social studies teacher, and gives us lengthy talks about America. Now, you‘d think that I, Kayla Martin, and she, Emma
Lambert, and the whole class would be brain dead, and be like,
―SHUT UP MR. HARRIS.‖ But we‘re not. Mr. Harris has
taught me more about social studies then ever before. I mean,
Cougar Pride 9
PTA LINKS
Voyagers Team cont.
he told us that all we knew were lies. I mean,
America is NOT a democracy! Who knew?
Apparently Mr. Harris did.
MR. FASOLDT: Mr. Fasoldt is our math teacher. I have to say
he‘s the best math teacher I‘ve ever had. Unlike Emma, I am
not a mathematician. I mean, I‘m that kid who hates asking for
help, and bluffs. Now, with Mr. Fasoldt, I feel free to ask him
anything, and I know that he won‘t yell at me, telling me that I
should‘ve known what the answer was. He actually teaches us
Math, and really helps us understand.
MRS. GLEESON: Mrs. Gleeson is our Language Arts teacher.
I‘ve had her for 2 years in a row, and I feel so blessed. She‘s
the only woman on our team, and she‘s outnumbered 3 to 1.
Yet, she‘s the leader of the team, and has hair. She always
brings out the creative side in all of us, and always gives us
really good tips in our writing. She Feng Shui-ed her
room, which means we all have good luck in that classroom.

Following an incredible undefeated season, the 8th
-grade Crosby Field Hockey team took the state
championship this year for the first time in the
school‘s history! They defeated Lourdes in an intense doubleovertime flick-off to claim the trophy on Ballard High School‘s
field. Some of the girls have visited Eastern High School‘s
field hockey program with the hopes of playing there next year.
Wherever they go, they will always be Crosby Cougars at
heart!
The 6th- and 7th-grade teams also had excellent, exciting seasons this year. Girls from all three teams are already gearing
up for the season next year by playing in winter leagues. It‘s
not too late to join them, even for 5th-graders. For more information, call Kelly Gannott, Field Hockey Co-Director, at 4199678.

to good use to purchase new music, stands, and other items to
benefit the orchestra.
The All County Middle School Orchestra performed at Ballard

Tennis
The Crosby tennis team just finished another great
season in October. This year we had 22 wonderful
players representing our school. They put in a lot
of hard work on the court, showed great improvement and most
importantly had a lot of fun! I hope everyone will come back
next season and look forward to new faces interested in joining
the team. The middle school tennis season is in September and
October. Information will be available in the office during the
first few weeks of school.
Hope to see you on the court!
