For kids living with type 1 diabetes
Welcome to
D-CAMPS
TOGETHER WE CAN GROW AND DISCOVER
AND TAKE CHARGE OF DIABETES AND
NEVER LET IT DEFINE US.
WE WILL EXPLORE, TALK, SHARE AND
LAUGH UNCONTROLLABLY BECAUSE
WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER.

GOOD TIMES.
THE CANADIAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION’S
CAMPING TRADITION BEGAN WHEN CAMP BANTING FIRS
T
OPENED ITS DOORS IN 1953. SINCE THEN, OUR CAMP
PROGRAM HAS GROWN EXTENSIVELY, AND THE ASSOCIA
TION
NOW OPERATES 12 OVERNIGHT CAMPS ACROSS CANADA
.
TODAY, EACH CAMP OFFERS AN ARRAY OF ACTIVITIES THA
MAKE USE OF THE FACILITIES AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT
T
AVAILABLE AT EACH LOCATION.

WHERE KIDS WITH DIABETES CAN SIMPLY BE KIDS.
D-Camps helps kids indulge their sense of
fun and adventure in a diabetes-friendly
environment where they can:
xx Meet and connect with other kids who
share the same experiences they do and
who understand what it’s like to live with
diabetes.
xx Participate in outdoor activities such as
swimming, hiking, canoeing, campfires
and archery that help promote
self-esteem and personal growth
xx Learn how to self-manage their diabetes
in a supportive environment. Campers often
return home eager to be more independent
with their diabetes care and better able to
manage day-to-day hurdles.
Empowerment
has never been
SO FUN....
THE CANADIAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION IS PROUD TO BE THE ONLY
NATIONAL PROVIDER OF SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN
AND YOUTH LIVING WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES. COLLECTIVELY KNOWN
AS D-CAMPS, OUR 12 CAMPS OFFER A TRUE CAMPING EXPERIENCE
WHILE ACCOMMODATING THE NEEDS OF OUR CAMPERS.
DRAWING ON OUR PAST EXPERIENCES AND ENERGIZED WITH EACH
PASSING SUMMER, OUR GOAL IS TO PROVIDE KIDS LIVING WITH
TYPE 1 DIABETES WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITH
FRIENDS WHO TRULY UNDERSTAND THEM, TO BUILD SELFCONFIDENCE, LEARN SKILLS AND SELF-MANAGE THEIR DIABETES.
ALL THIS HAPPENS IN A FUN, NURTURING AND MEDICALLY
SUPPORTED ENVIRONMENT THAT GIVES PARENTS PEACE OF MIND.
7
“MY SINCERE
GRATITUDE TO THE
STAFF FOR BEING
SO CARING. YOU
GUYS TRULY KNOW
WHAT YOU ARE
DOING!”
- D-PARENT
Diabetes is
24/7
So is our
healthcare team
At each camp a team of dedicated health-care professionals provide the
highest level of diabetes education and management around the clock.
This team includes pediatric endocrinologists, doctors, registered nurses,
diabetes educators, dietitians, student nurses and student dietitians.
8
A WELL-DESERVED
BREAK FROM “D.”
From the moment your child was diagnosed, your
entire world changed. Where you were once able
to simply make dinner, you now have to consider
glucose levels, weigh food, count carbs, adjust
basal and bolus levels and find yourself obsessing
over numbers. Even a simple family bike ride now
involves packing snacks, juice boxes, a meter and
test strips.
D-Camps is an opportunity for you to rest
easy knowing your child will learn crucial skills
and gain confidence while being monitored by
a dedicated medical team. For more than 60
years, parents just like you have entrusted their
children to camps provided by the Canadian
Diabetes Association.
9
“MY
DAUGHTER’S
FAVORITE TIME
OF YEAR IS
D-CAMP! IT
OFFERS HER SO
MUCH AND SHE
ALWAYS COMES
HOME WITH
SOME NEW
INFORMATION
OR SKILL.”
- D-PARENT
WE RECOGNIZE THAT FAMILIES HAVE
DIFFERENT ABILITIES TO PAY. THAT’S
WHY WE OFFER A VOLUNTARY, THREE-TIER
PRICING PROGRAM THAT ALLOWS YOU
TO CHOOSE THE CAMP FEE THAT YOU ARE
MOST COMFORTABLE PAYING. FOR THOSE
THAT FIND THE TIER 3 FEE A CHALLENGE
TO PAY, WE OFFER FEE SUBSIDIES, CALLED
CAMPERSHIPS.
THE CANADIAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION
BELIEVES THAT NO CHILD SHOULD MISS OUT
ON A SUMMER AT CAMP BECAUSE OF A LACK
OF FUNDING. SUPPORTED BY GENEROUS
DONATIONS, CAMPERSHIPS HELP FAMILIES
WHO WOULDN’T OTHERWISE BE ABLE TO
AFFORD CAMP.
IF YOU FEEL YOU WILL REQUIRE A
CAMPERSHIP, PLEASE FILL OUT THE
CAMPERSHIP APPLICATION INCLUDED IN
YOUR ONLINE OR PAPER REGISTRATION.
10
A Day
at Camp
AT EACH OF OUR CAMPS, WE DEVOTE SPECIFIC TIMES TO BLOOD
GLUCOSE MONITORING (BGM), ADMINISTERING INSULIN AND
TEACHING CHILDREN OTHER SKILLS THAT WILL HELP THEM SELFMANAGE THEIR DIABETES. WE ALSO SPEND LARGE PORTIONS
OF THE DAY SWIMMING, PLAYING SPORTS, HIKING, CREATING
ARTISTIC MASTERPIECES, OR SINGING AT THE TOP OF OUR LUNGS.
FOR A FULL DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITIES AT THE CAMP OF
YOUR CHOICE, PLEASE VISIT DCAMPS.CA.
Our evenings are typically spent with the entire camp participating in
an evening program that may involve a game of Capture the Flag, Skit
Night or a campfire followed by BGM, a snack and bedtime.

FAMILY
CAMP
Family Camp is for
parents, guardians,
siblings, caregivers and
the child with type 1
diabetes. Family Camp
provides families
with the opportunity
to learn more about
type 1 diabetes in a
positive and supportive
environment where they
can share information
and experiences with
other families faced
with similar issues.
D-TOUR IS A WEEKEND PROGRAM FOR TEENS
15-18 AS THEY TRANSITION INTO ADULT
LIFE WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES. THESE UNIQUE
WEEKENDS INCLUDE GUEST SPEAKERS,
SPECIAL SESSIONS ON HOT TOPICS,
INTERACTIVE PRESENTATIONS, AND PLENTY
OF TIME FOR PARTICIPANTS TO CONNECT IN
A RELAXED SETTING. MEDICAL STAFF ARE
ALWAYS ON HAND AT EVERY D-TOUR.

LEADERSHIP
DEVELOPMENT
PROGRAM
The Leadership Development Program (LDP) is
an opportunity for teens to gain independence
and valuable leadership skills through challenging
and enriching activities. This program provides
participants an opportunity to hone their skills
to become great leaders both at camp and at
home in their communities. In 2015, Leadership
Development Programs are offered from coast to
coast at D-Camps across Canada.
