It was the June before my fifth
birthday and Mom was worried.
I had complained of a stomach ache
every afternoon for 3 days running. No
fever, but lots of persistent whining.
On the fourth day, just as she had
decided to haul me off to our beloved
family doctor, she solved the mystery. As
Mom walked through the orchard of our
San Fernando Valley home, she spotted
me sitting under the low-lying branches
of a peach tree. My crisp organdy pinafore
was piled high with stone-hard, green
peaches. Naked peach pits made a half
circle around my knees.
Mom’s eyes flashed to the adjacent
peach trees. All of the lowest branches had
been stripped by a 4 year old fruit bandit.
The animated lecture that followed
made it clear -- in no uncertain terms
-- that further consumption of green fruit
would lead to worse consequences than
just pains in my stomach.
I learned the value of patience
that afternoon. And in the weeks that
followed, Mom taught me truly to
appreciate perfectly ripened fruit.
To this day I find it difficult to think
about summer without imagining the
scent and taste of a juicy peach right off
the tree -- still warm from the sun and, of
course, perfectly ripened.
But finding juicy, ripe supermarket
peaches and nectarines is can be a
challenge.
Take a whiff before you buy.
Fragrance is a key element of ripeness.
Ripe peaches give to gentle pressure at the
stem end.
If you buy fruit that isn’t tree ripened,
the sweetness can’t be substantially
improved after harvest, but texture
can be improved using the paper bag
method. Place peaches (or nectarines) in
a paper bag; close bag loosely and leave
at room temperature. Check daily for
improvement in softness next to stem.
Refrigerate fruit unwashed and dry, loose
in the crisper drawer up to a week.
Try grilling peaches and using them
with mixed green salads or as a side dish
with grilled chicken or pork. Cut them in
half from top to bottom and remove the
pit. Brush the cut side with a little canola
oil and grill on clean grate with mediumhot fire about 2 to 3 minutes. If needed
to heat throughout, turn and grill on
opposite side for 1 to 2 minutes.

HHYC Opening Day Boat Parade.
On April 14th we celebrated a
wonderful 48th Opening Day, preceded
by our annual Opening Day Boat Parade.
Twenty Six boats cruised the harbour
under sunny skies and cool breezes. Each
stopping in front of the club to salute
our Flag officers, those having a past
Commodore onboard received a salute
shot from our cannon.
The Ceremony started off with
patriotic songs performed by many of our
talented members as we all paid respect
to our nations flag and our recently fallen
members. We then progressed into a
series of introductions of present, past and
present Flag officers, then officers from
other clubs and organizations, highlighted
by the introduction of the Mayor of
Huntington Beach, Connie Boardman,
who gave a very inspirational speech.

open to navigation allowing Commodore

yachting season. The rest of the afternoon
was spent sharing the delicious buffet, fine
entertainment and amazing camaraderie
which have become HHYC trademarks.
Besides our regular events in April,
like daily Happy Hours, Taco Tuesday,
Pasta Thursday, Friday Bar Night, Men’s
Lunch Cruise, Seabelles Lunch, movie
nights, Free BBQ, etc., we had a fantastic
Birthday celebration on April 12th with,
as always, amazing food and dynamic live
entertainment.
May started off with the Seabelles
Fashion Show, the ever so classy affair
consisting of many of our lovely and
talented members as models. With
barely a day to rest we rolled right into
our annual Cinco de Mayo celebration
co-sponsored by the Harbour Rod
and Reel Club. Raffles, Piñatas, tacos,
margaritas, great music, what more can I
say? On the heels of Cinco de Mayo was
yet another fabulous Birthday celebration.
Is it starting to sound like we enjoy
having a good time? Well, wait because
there’s more. Did I hear someone say the

2013 yachting season is open? Well, in
mid-May we proved it with our cruise to
Avalon. We all had a terrific time, happy
hour aboard Rick and Chris Mercer’s
Michelson “Strike Zone” was followed
by a miniature golf tournament, dingy
parade and topped off by a wonderful
dinner at the Catalina Island Yacht Club.
June is going to be off to a toe
tapping start June 6th thru June 9th
HHYC will present “1940’s Radio Hour”.
This is a fun filled trip down memory lane
as a cast of radio show charters sing and
dance their way into your hearts. The
show is being directed by Tim Nelson of
Rose Theater fame and produced by Sally
Fenton. Tickets are on sale now for $30 a
seat which includes a light meal served at
7PM with the show starting at 8 PM and
a dessert served during intermission, call
the HHYC office as soon as possible seats
are going fast.

June 1st from 11AM to 6PM. Public is
welcome there will be live music, games,

Thanks to the Grand Prix Foundation
of Long Beach, each year CHOC receives
over $20,000 in donations from the week’s
events. Little Mermaid Guild members
and spouses volunteer at the week’s events
to earn those donations for CHOC. At the
Golf Tournament held at the El Dorado
Golf Course, our President, Lynda
Edwards volunteered with Check-In and
Volunteer Coordinator, Ginny Bowman
was Guild Coordinator and also worked
at Check-In. Fran Gitsham was at Golfer’s
Registration, On-Course volunteers
greeting and monitoring were Susan
Dill, Don Dill, Marily Fetter, Ralph Van

At the evening dinner volunteering at the
live and silent auctions and Beat the Pro

Later in the week, the Toyota Grand
Prix Charity Ball was well attended at
the Westin in Long Beach, and proved
to be another great success raising over
$109,000 in silent and live auction items
alone. Several LMG members attended.
At the Gala live auction, our very own
Fran Gitsham came out the winning
bidder for a four-day Grand Prix Racing
Course Lessons on a high performance
Corvette Grand Sport from Bondurant
School of High Performance Driving.
Fran had fierce competition for the
auction item which drove the price up to
several thousand dollars, but she persisted
as she needed driving lessons to better
handle her 10 year old Corvette and use
it to its full potential. Congratulations
Fran! Beautiful music and lively dancing
completed the evening.

Huntington Beach on Father’s Day

La Familia

If only the children at Orangewood
knew how much we, La Familia members,
benefit by helping them. Our friendships
grow deeper with each activity that we
have. If only more people would realize
that helping others can be fun we’d have
even more members. I started with this
group way back in the eighties and found a
super support group among them. We like
each other and are there to help each other
as well as the children at Orangewood.
If you haven’t been to a party at
Mim’s you have missed out. The Strickler
home provides a warm, welcoming
and fun atmosphere that leaves all in
attendance feeling loved. St. Patrick’s day
this year was no exception.
Everyone was Irish that day and
green was everywhere. Mim involved her
very talented family members Scott on
the keyboard with his band and Sandy
and Jerry who catered a most delicious

corn beef and cabbage dinner, Anita
Osgood served some tasty drinks for all
of us to enjoy.
Our lovely Sunday afternoon hosted
by Jim and Judy Flemming was absolutely
delightful. A view from the deck as
we sipped our drinks and ate delicious
hors’ d’oeuvre was truly breathtaking.
Thanks to our gracious and generous host
and hostess Orangewood will benefit
greatly. Pictures of the event will be in

We are very sorry to report that a
very dear friend Carol Webster passed
away this month after a long illness. We’ll
miss her a lot. She was a wonderful friend.

The Flying Dutchman Chapter
of the Guilds for Segerstrom Center
held their March meeting at the lovely
home of Frank and Virginia Buccella. It
was celebrated with hors d’oeuvres and
desserts brought by the guests. After the
gathering of cocktails and lots of food,
the group was entertained by one of
their members, Cathy Thomas. Cathy is
a well-known food editor for the Orange
County Register as well as an author of
several cookbooks, articles in magazines,
a teacher of culinary classes, and she
conducts culinary tours to Europe and
Asia.
Cathy told of her experiences as a
food columnist, her interactions with
Julia Childs and other famous chefs. She
has studied with chefs around the world
to learn about global ingredients. Her
latest book, 50 Best Plants on the Planet,
gives the reader 150 recipes for the best
fruits and vegetables to benefit a healthy
diet. She autographed each book with a
personal message for the members who
attended. Cathy has been a Huntington
Beach resident for many years and has
published this book with the help of
Melissa’s World Variety Produce, who
has introduced specialty organic fruits
and vegetables to the public through their
family-run distribution business. Her
book can be purchased at bookstores,
from Cathy, or from Amazon.com. The
color plates are beautiful and the entire
book is a gem. The recipes have been
tested by experts and they are delicious.
The meeting was adjourned shortly
after Parliamentarian Charlene Bauer
presented the slate of officers for next

Stop California State Lands Commission’s New Tax

The CSLC is still aggressively
fighting to dismiss our counterclaim
against SB 152 which eliminates the rent
free placement of docks in the main and
mid channels of Huntington Harbour
as a refuge for the boating public. Proof
Sacramento places revenue above public
safety.
We are still waiting for our third
court date to determine if the State can
squash our counterclaim against SB 152.
While only around 150 of the 4,000
properties in Huntington Harbour
are directly affected, the other 3,850
properties should take notice of what is
happening in Newport Harbor where
their city council has imposed draconian
dock charges up to $4,000 per year using
SB 152 as their impetus. The Huntington
Beach city council is watching our lawsuit
and what is happening in Newport Beach
very carefully. If we lose they might
very well start “taxing” the 3,850 or so
property owners in Huntington Harbour
as Newport Beach has done. In other

words, everyone in Huntington Harbour
is affected by our lawsuit against the
CSLC.
Fighting the State costs lots of
money, easily more than $250,000 over
the next couple of years. I urge everyone
in HH to make an annual contribution of
a hundred dollars or so. So far about 100
of you have generously donated around

$75,000 but we have spent over $100,000
so far. I therefore plead for the other 3,900
HH residents to make a contribution
this year. Not one of you wants to send
Sacramento an extra $2,000 to $3,000
more each year. Imagine if all 4,000
Harbour residents made just one small
$50 donation we would have all the
money we need!
I’ll post current info on our website

neighbors, we need everyone’s support.

The “April Showers” Daytime
Gourmet Luncheon was held at the
home of Pearl Holmes with co-hostess,
Shell Grossman assisting Pearl. Members
gathered in the kitchen to prepare the
menu that Shell and Pearl selected for the
cooks. Barbara Devlin, started on one of
the appetizers, delicious Mushroom Caps
filled with chopped cooked chicken and
bacon and sherry wine and bread crumbs,
while Shell made a Mango Chutney
cheese roll with homemade chutney made
by Pearl Holmes that was delicious and
was a big hit with all members, there
was nothing left of the roll after the
“wine hour.” First course of the day was a
“Galloping Gazpacho” that was loved by
all guests-and no one wanted any salt or
pepper on the spicy gazpacho. The main
entree of the day was Seared Scallops
prepared by Betty McCarthy, Roasted
Asparagus a la June Ascolesi and Scalloped
Potatoes by Mary Johnson and Gloria
Beckstrom. The dessert was a delicious
Strawberries a La Nino, fresh strawberries
and cut up figs served with French vanilla
ice cream, crushed macaroons and
sweetened whipped cream with kirsch
& port wine. It was a wonderful end to a
delicious luncheon.
The Fins “Supper Club” held a St.
Patrick’s Day Party at Pearl’s Clubhouse
that was enjoyable evening for members.
The menu consisted, of course, on corned
beef and cabbage with Irish Soda Bread.
The corned beef and cabbage was made
by Rita Collins and Barbara Devlin, the
potatoes by June Ascolesi and the carrots
by Dotty Wood. Appetizers of a Creamy
Spinach Dip and Smoked Salmon on Irish
Soda Bread with Chive butter were served
along with Guinness Beer and Wine to
arriving members. Dessert, of course, was
Green Grasshopper Pie made by Mary
Johnston and Barbara Simone.
Fins Installation for the year
2013-2014 was held on May 1, 2013 at
Antonello’s Restaurant in Costa Mesa.
Barbara Devlin was installed as the new
President of Fins and her Board Members
installed were Betty Mc earthy, Vice
President, Maggie Flavia, Secretary,
Doreen Hill, Newsletter Editor, Marge
Mitchell, Membership and Mary
Johnston, Parliamentarian. A delicious
luncheon of lnsalata Giardina salad, Sole
alla Calabrese (fish baked with fresh herbs)
and a delicious Eggless Flan with caramel
sauce with fresh berries was the dessert.
Members also attending the luncheon
were Carol Gallagher, June Ascolesi, Pearl
Holmes, Gloria Beckstrom, Solde Thorn
and Dotty Wood.

Huntington Harbour Garden Club

Eighteen garden enthusiasts gathered
at the HH Mall in the early morning of
April 16. What were these ladies up to so
early in the morning and so obviously in
high spirits? They were embarking on a
field trip. You can only imagine what it
takes to organize eighteen people into five
cars, unless you were there and witnessed
the scene. But finally, everyone was
satisfied and we were on our way to the
Bembridge House.
In an informal survey conducted
by this reporter, eight out of ten people
had never heard of the Bembridge House.
After an uneventful journey, the caravan
arrived at Bembridge House, 953 Park
Circle Drive in Long Beach. HHGC
members assembled in front of the house
for the customary picture taken by
Pearl Holmes, the club’s photographer
extraordinaire.
The tour began outside and was
conducted by volunteer guide Sherron.
The house is most commonly known as
the Green-Rankin-Bembridge House
or just the Bembridge House because
Dorothy Bembridge was its last owner and
occupant. Local carpenters commissioned

house from a ready-cut house kit in 1906.
In 1918 The Rankin family bought
the house. Dorothy Rankin was nine years
old at that time. She lived in the house
until she married her first husband. After
her parents passed away, Dorothy and
her second husband Charlie Bembridge
bought the house. It was their residence
for the remainder of their lives. In 1981
Dorothy lived to see her house designated
as a Long Beach Historic landmark.
Then it was time to ring the doorbell;
Karen, our inside tour guide, opened the
door just as Dorothy Bembridge would
have done. Dorothy would quickly assess
if you were worthy of her time. Negative:
she was on her way to an important
meeting. Positive: you were invited in.
Lucky for us Karen invited us in. She
pointed out the many distinctive features
of the interior: the finely carved details
on balusters, columns, fireplace; leadedglass windows and transoms. But what
really made the house come alive were
the furnishings and decorations in true
Victorian style.
After Dorothy’s death, the Long
Beach Cultural Heritage purchased the
house for $325.000. The Green-RankinBembridge House, as it is officially known,
was added to the National Registry of
Historic Places in 2005.
The tour concluded with a visit to the
garden with its two-story carriage house
and octagonal aviary. Upon Dorothy’s
death, the house itself was in excellent
condition. The same can’t be said for the
garden. Dorothy’s passion was her music,
not gardening. An army of volunteers are
working in the garden to transform it
into a Victorian garden with rose bushes,
trellises, symmetrical flower beds, an herb
garden, wrought-iron chairs beneath an
arbor covered with Cécile Brunner roses.
After the field trip, members visited
yet another Long Beach landmark: The
Pike, where they held their monthly
meeting while munching. President
Doreen Hill and Betty McCarthy outlined
the events for the coming months. At the
next meeting on May 21, a color specialist
from Sherman Gardens will speak on
incorporating color and design in the
garden. A committee is feverishly working
on the annual fundraiser next September.

Assistance League® Huntington Beach

Treasures by the Sea 2013
On Saturday April 6th, more than
680 women attended “Treasures by the
Sea”, Assistance League Huntington
Beach’s annual fundraiser. The fundraiser
was held at the Hyatt Regency Resort
and Spa, Huntington Beach. The fundraiser was a combined effort of chapter
members, Dream Catcher auxiliary
members, Assisteens® and PALS (family
and friends). Many Huntington Harbour
Assistance League members and their
guests attended the event.
The event began with a “Corner
Boutique” sale and a fantastic silent
auction that included over 1,000 items.
After the silent auction, guests were treated
to an afternoon program that included a
delicious lunch, a fabulous fashion show
with our members modeling Chico’s
clothing and an exciting live auction with
thirteen packages to bid on. Our own
Huntington Harbour residents, Jerry
and Linda Cassidy and Roger and Lynne
Wilhelm donated to the live auction two
Duff y Boat Holiday Cocktail Cruises for
eight. The highlight of the Live Auction
was the appearance of several Marines
who surprised the ladies with a day in San
Diego with the Marines as an unexpected
live auction package.
This year’s “Treasurers By The
Sea” raised more than $190,000 for our
philanthropic programs which included
money raised to “Clothe-A-Child”. The
money raised during the “Clothe-A-
Assisteens® were integral in making the “Treasures by the Sea” event a huge success.
Child” appeal will go to clothing local
children during our Operation School
Bell® “Target Nights” program.
Each year the success of the
fundraising event has grown making
it possible to assist more children and
families in need in our community. It was
truly an uplifting day. To all of you, who
donated to and supported “Treasurers by
the Sea”, thank you.
Assisteens®
The Assisteens were an important
part of the success of the fundraiser.
Thirty-five Assisteens were ready to serve.
Their duties included setting seventy
tables with centerpieces, bookmarks,
programs and candy. Others Assisteens
helped guests with registration and the
Silent Auction. At the end of the event,
they helped guests carry their “treasures”
to their cars. Overall the Assisteens
contributed over 150 hours to the event.

Assistance League Huntington Beach
is a nonprofit volunteer organization
dedicated to improving the quality
of life for children and adults in the
community. We serve the communities
of Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley,
and Westminster. We strive to put caring
and commitment into action. Last year
we gave back $429,675 to our community
through funds raised at our thrift shop
and our annual fundraiser. Our Thrift
Shop and Boutique are located at 8071
Slater Ave., Huntington Beach (just East
of Beach Blvd). We are open 11am-3pm
on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and
Saturday. Our Thursday hours are 1-5pm.
We are closed Sunday and Monday.

On April 10th, after a short
meeting, Sea Isle Garden Club
members and guests enjoyed a
wonderful guided private tour of
the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. Our
volunteer docent was knowledgeable
and enthusiastic, teaching us about
the various plants and wildlife that
inhabit the wetlands. We all agreed
we would like to come back next
year to learn more! After the tour,
we had lunch at the Red Table in the
Huntington Harbour Mall.
The Sea Isle Garden Club’s
Installation Luncheon was held on
May 8th at the beautiful waterfront
room of the Bahia Corinthian
Yacht Club. We enjoyed a delicious
luncheon and dessert and celebrated
our contributions to the community
in the beautification of the Edinger
Parkway and the completion of the
Donor Recognition area.

Sea Isle Garden Club’s Edinger Project - A Dream to Reality

Thirty Years of neglect
The Sea Isle Garden Club and the
Edinger Project began the transformation
from a dream to reality in 2003 when
Founder Anne White invited interested
residents to a meeting at her home. Now,
ten years later, her name is on the Donor
Recognition Plaque which was installed
by Prunin Landscape Design Company
in May, directly across from the Seagate
Clubhouse at Bonaire Circle. So many
Harbour residents and businesses have
made major contributions to the project
and Sea Isle Garden Club has engraved
their names for all to see.
The condition of the mile-long section
of Edinger from Saybrook to the Marina
Bridge, as it was in 2003, had been the
focus of the civic-minded members of the
Sea Isle Garden Club. This unsightly strip
on the north side the Edinger roadside,
about thirty feet wide, had been in need
of major restoration for over thirty years.
In the rainy season, this curbless, rutted
area became a pool of puddles and mud,
flowing across the street. It was tagged the
Edinger Mud Flats of Huntington Beach.
The environmental improvement and
beautification of this Edinger Parkway
has considerably impacted over 2000
residents who must travel this road daily.
So in 2003 Sea Isle Garden Club
began with twelve members, led by
Anne White, and Dorothy Ralphs, as the
Club’s first President, with Pat Morris,
Patti Kenmore, Lois Halsey, Cathy Kelly,
Suzanne Russell, Lucille Mascoli, and
Terry Hayden, determined to improve
and beautify this area. The Garden
Club soon grew to over fifty members,
who began collecting contributions,
organizing public information meetings,
Springtime along Edinger Avenue, 2013.
lobbying the City of Huntington Beach,
and rallying the homeowners.
The
Club
persistently
held
evening Town Hall Meetings, inviting
residents and City officials to get the
communications going. When Anne
White became President of Sea Isle,
Dorothy Ralphs served tirelessly as our
Liaison for the Project, building business
relationships, and meeting with Orange
County officials, landscape designers, and
engineers. As community interest and
funding from the neighborhood grew, the
Huntington Beach City Council realized
in 2005 that this group was not going
away. With an offer from SIGC of $4000,
to pay for half of a Reconnaissance Study,
HB and the Club soon had a detailed
plan of how the dream could come true.
Six months later, at the urging of Sea Isle,
the City of Huntington Beach pledged
$60,000 if the Club could match it.
The City in turn solicited support from
Orange County Transit Authority, and
Federal funding as well.
Over the years, Garden club
members have raised funds by holding
various events, including an Antiques
Appraisal, a Valentine’s Luncheon, a
Fiesta Fundraiser, a Luau Fundraiser, and
a Fabulous Ground Breaking ceremony.
Altogether the members and supporters
donated over $194,000 towards the
project.
The goal was to landscape using
native plants, which will survive with low
maintenance. Sea Isle Garden Club had
the initial design plans drawn by Guy
Stivers, who had worked with the Shipley
Nature Center. Finally, construction on
the Edinger Parkway began on October,

2007, with installation of curbs. The
soil then had to be treated to reduce the
salinity, since the flood channel to the
north has an influx of sea water. Tons of
new soil, that fit the specific conditions
needed for this project, was transported
into place behind the new curbs. Once
the solar irrigation system was installed,
we knew the plants would soon follow.
Some of the California friendly plants
chosen are Toyon trees, Powis Castle
Sage, Ceanothus, and, Matilija poppies,
which are thriving beautifully.
The Sea Isle Garden Club has been
recognized for its work by receiving the
Blue Ribbon Certificate of Achievement
from California Garden Clubs, Inc. in
2006, 2007, 2009, and 2011, as well
as the “Let’s Go Native” project award
with $1000.00 by CGCI in 2008 while
Caron Mount was President. When Janet
Littlejohn was President, Sea Isle won
the 2010 California first-place award for
“Operation Wildflower”, and finally, the
National Garden Clubs Certificate of
Commendation for “Roadside Award” in
2011.
Since the completion of the
landscaping, President Mary Ann Brinket
has led the club in having the Donor
Recognition Plaque installed. Sea Isle
wants to acknowledge the dedication of
the all Sea Isle members on the 10 year
anniversary of our founding, as well as
the contributions of so many residents,
and the City of Huntington Beach. Our
Edinger Parkway is a triumphant jewel
in Huntington Harbour. The dream has
come true.

The HRRC was formed in 1994 by
local fisherman who felt the need for a
fishing club that was family oriented,
sensitive to the fishery, educational in
nature and competitive in local and
international tournaments.
The Harbour Rod and Reel Club
(HRRC) announced the new President
and his staff for 2013 at the Installation
Brunch held at the Sea Cliff Country
Club in January.
The schedule this year is packed full
of family fun and great fishing ventures.
One of the highlights of the year is the
annual Olive Crest Kid’s fishing event.
HRRC charters the Clemente from Dana
Point whose captain and crew are very
good with kids. HRRC typically takes 10
members to teach 20+ kids how to catch
the big ones.
This year they have already had a
trout fishing seminar followed by a trip
to Lake Irvine. There is another trip to
Lake Irvine in May. The second seminar
was on halibut fishing without live bait.
This will be followed by a day of halibut
fishing in local waters. This event is called
Butts and Bagels as the Captain takes the
crew to the fishing grounds and sets up

Huntington Harbour Philharmonic Committee

Amanda and Joyce Zimmerman had a lot of fun at the Juniors fashion show.
What a Year! We celebrated 50 years
of the Huntington Harbour Philharmonic
Committee, and made this past year one
to remember. Hundreds of volunteers
worked on so many projects. First, we
presented an incredible boat parade that
delighted the entire Harbour. Then, it was
on to the Cruise of Lights. We answered
phones, helped at the will call table for
tickets, got passengers on the buses at the
mall, then off again at the Huntington
Harbour Yacht Club. And, we made sure
they boarded the Cruise boats, and made
their way back to the buses. We were
on walkie talkies, answered questions,
presented chili night, and wore our blue
and white sweatshirts with pride. Why?
It’s all about helping to preserve and
continue the music programs for our own
children. Funds we raise make sure these
programs continue.
There was barely time to put away
the holiday decorations before we were
in the Music Mobile van, coming to your
child’s school, and showing the children
instruments from violins to trumpets. We
celebrated our success at a fantastic gala
at the Queen Mary with dining, dancing,

of Orange County’s House of Design.
Seems we were everywhere!
We cheered on the Juniors, our

wonderful fashion show at Meadowlark
Country Club. These motivated kids
are out there helping in the community,
getting service points for college, and are
the next generation of volunteers. We are
so proud of them. Your high school son
or daughter could most definitely join
the Juniors for September. The money
they raise also contributes to the music
programs for our Orange County kids.
The HHPC is made up of five groups,
each with their own flavor, but acting as
one with the goal of continuing music and
music education for our kids. Admiralty,
Trinidad, Islander, Marina Windjammer,
and Sandpiper groups are filled with your
friends and neighbors.
We know how to throw some
incredible parties, too. Yes, we celebrate
often. At our installation, chairmen
Donna Gray and Lolly McHardy thanked
everyone for a wonderful, exciting year.
They turned over the gavel to Kim
Weddon. Congratulations!
After a few months of rest and
relaxation, we’ll be back in September!

Islanders enjoyed their installation at Sparks.

The annual Installation Luncheon
was held in May at Claire’s lovely
restaurant located in a Victorian mansion
on the ocean as part of the Long Beach
Museum of Art. Members toured the art
exhibits before dining. Retiring President,
Carrol Wolf, presented each of her Board
Members with a calendar illustrated by
lovely watercolors of favorite scenes in
Huntington Harbour painted by Carrol
herself, an award winning artist.

The Scholarship Quilt, designed
by Pat McKenna, Kathleen Moore and
Marsha Hendler has been finalized.
The lively undersea fish motif will be
completed by members who will gather
at Pat McKenna’s home to sew individual
squares. All proceeds from the quilt raffle
held in the fall at the Fiber Arts Show
will be given to an art student at Golden
West College.
The Fine Arts Show and champagne
reception was held at the Windows
Galley in the Central Library. Best of
Show award was given to Marilyn Chow
Tom for her drift wood sculpture of a sea
bird, “Bird in Flight”. First place winners
were: Tracie Hanson oil painting; Jackie
Dvorman, photography; Carrol Ann
Wolf, Mixed Media; Carrol Ann Wolf,
watercolor; Rhea Black, Chinese Brush.
Viewer’s Choice was awarded to Jackie
Dvorman for her photography printed on
canvas of a bicycle in a hill-top town in
Provence.
A field trip to the Pacific Club,
organized by Pam Smart, included
a private tour of the California Arts
Collection by Director of the Foundation,
Jeffry LePlastrier. Luncheon followed at
the Bistango Restaurant.
Needles and Friends continues to
meet on Mondays from 1:00-3:30 at
various members’ homes. This is a fun
group and a great place to get inspiration

Annual Inland Cruise
The weekend of March 15th nearly
50 Anglers of Huntington Harbour
and guests met in the desert for the
organizations 42nd annual Inland
Cruise. This year’s event chairs were
Paul and Kathy Byrne and the festivities
began Friday evening March 15th with
a TGIF at the Byrne’s beautiful Citrus
Country Club home in La Quinta. The
Anglers brought their favorite appetizers
or desserts that were enjoyed by all as

March 16th Elle Barnard organized
an 18-hole golf tournament at Shadow
Mountain Golf Club and the Anglers
hit the links. The golfers included Bruce
Ranzan (Men 1st), Barney Barnard (Men
2nd), Jim Thomson (Men 3rd), Boris
Ralphs (Men 4th), Frank Gibson (Men
5th), Paul Byrne (Men 6th), Bill McCune
(Men 7th), Jeanne Gibson (Women 1st),
Elle Barnard (Women 2nd), Dorothy
Ralphs (Women 3rd) and Debbie Ranzan
(Women 4th). Non golfer Anglers enjoyed
the day shopping at the Street Fair or
Premium Outlet stores. Saturday evening
the Anglers gathered at the beautiful PGA
West home of Bill McCune and once
again the attendees brought appetizers
and desserts for all to enjoy while the golf
tournament prizes were awarded. The
fun filled weekend concluded Sunday
morning with breakfast at the Polo Club
in La Quinta.
April TGIF
Over 60 Anglers and guests met
Friday evening April 26th at the beautiful
Trinidad Island waterfront home of Lou
and Sue Earlabaugh for the April TGIF.
It was a great turnout and each of the
Anglers Friday evening Inland Cruise host Paul Byrne, Jeanne Sprague, Nancy
Kasabali and Saturday evening host Bill McCune.
Anglers brought one of their favorite
appetizers or desserts to be enjoyed by
all as they socialized and discussed some
of the upcoming activities like the June
19th annual Kids Fishing Trip for at-risk
children in our community that the
Anglers have organized and sponsored
for the past 42 years. A chartered Anglers
Twilight Fishing Trip scheduled for June
23rd was also announced.
Upcoming Events
The Anglers are celebrating their
49th year in the Harbour and have many
exciting social, fishing and philanthropic
activities planned. Upcoming events
include the annual Kid’s Fishing Trip for
at risk children on June 19th the Twilight
Fishing Trip on June 23rd, the annual
Fish Fry on June 29th and the July TGIF
at the Morrow’s on July 26th.

Our “curb appeal” is beautiful
and being under the guidance of

Club green thumb, made it a success!

Sixteen boats and 117 party goers
came together on the Bimini docks on
St. Patrick’s Day to enjoy some of the
finest things in life…food, beverages,
friendship, great weather and messing
around in boats. The Dock Party, the first
ever for SGYC, was a tremendous success.
Upon arrival, each attendee received a
flashing party-themed lapel pin and one of
Sue’s delicious Shamrock O’Ritas. Lots of
green, of course, including green beer on
tap, but many attendees got extra creative
with St. Patty’s Day themed clothing and
accessories, making the party that much
more festive. Special mention goes to
Peggy Allison and her green hair and tiara,
and her and Dennis Huffman’s matching
foot-long alcohol delivery devices; Josef
Davydovits with his giant flashing bow
tie and tiny hat; Dave Bobier’s leprechaun
hat and giant bowtie; Janet Littlejohn’s
giant bowtie; and Pat Jenkes and her Elton
John-like green glasses. The Club also had
the honor of presenting 6 burgees to new
members (Dave/Barb Bobier, Brad/Sheri
Goodrich, Janet Littlejohn, Bob/Sheila
Osborn, Dan Torla/Pam Hayes, and
John/Cristi Ulrich).
On Saturday, April 20, more than
130 members and guests attended the
Club’s 37th Opening Day. The weather
was perfect. The boating was festive. The
beverages were flowing. The food was
delicious. The friendship was fantastic.
And the pomp & circumstance was
befitting of such a special day.
It all started with the traditional
Parade of the Fleet. Kismet was in the lead
in very impressive fashion, flying the Club
burgee and the officer flags. Seventeen
well-decorated boats followed. Though a
wee bit tardy, we were honored to have the
Harbor Patrol, complete with shooting
water cannon, escort the line of impressive
boats through the channels. The parade
concluded with the traditional pass-inreview salute to the flag officers. And for
the first time ever the four Commodores
were joined on the bow by the other two
officers of the Club – the Treasurer (Lisa
Zia) and the Secretary (Cindy Allen) –
with all looking spiff y in their blazers and
hats.
Following a delightful 90 minutes on
the water, we gathered at the clubhouse
for the pre-program happy hour. The
program started at 16:30 sharp, with
nine Staff Commodores and Margaret
Humphreys in attendance. Mary Shebell
provided an inspiring invocation. The
eight bells were rung in honor of our
dearly departed 1993 commodore, Bill
Thornburg. Officer flags were raised –
this year below the U.S. flag, which itself
was at half mast in honor of those struck
down in Boston. Huge cannon fire roared
as each flag reached its pinnacle. Jr. Staff
Commodore Dale Giali was sworn in as a
new member of the International Order
of the Blue Gavel (the association of past
Commodores). We had several dignitaries
in attendance, including officers of the
Huntington Harbour Yacht Club, the
U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, and the
IOBG.
Starting this month, Seagate Yacht
Club and the United States Coast Guard
Auxiliary have entered into a partnership
promoting boating safety in Huntington
Harbor. The Coast Guard Auxiliary
offers classes on navigation, boater
safety, boat safety inspections and related
activities.
The Coast Guard Auxiliary Mission
Statement is as follows: Recreational
Boating Safety - To improve the

knowledge, skills, and operating
environment of the recreational boater.
To assist the U.S. Coast Guard and
States in a multitude of operational and
administrative activities including many
new as well as traditional roles.
Members of the Coast Guard
Auxiliary are available to perform Vessel
Safety Checks (VSCs) for all boats. For
your convenience they will come to your
slip. Naturally, the owner has to be present
for the inspection. The VSC informs you
of any safety issues with your boat. Only
two people see the VSC report, you and
the examiner.
Besides the obvious value of
knowing if your boat has any safety
deficiencies (which can then be corrected)
the additional benefit to having the
VSC in hand is that if the Coast Guard
wants to board your boat within one
year to do a VSC, you can show them
the report already completed, and in
most cases they will send you on your
way. If you would like to schedule your
