This decision takes effect for Sunquest’s winter 2012-2013 program starting in November 2012. “Known for its quality, reliability and THISWEEK 06 FLAGSHIP RENOS 25 SPICING IT UP Starwood Hotels invests millions in refreshing Sheraton properties Spice Island Beach Resort arrives in Toronto to share latest news 09 TIANGUIS TURISTICO 32 FEATURE THIS Mexico’s largest travel trade show kicks off with a bang Skylink stays on top of its game with expanding lineup of services outstanding customer service, WestJet has been a key partner for Sunquest and the wider portfolio of Thomas Cook brands for the last couple of years,” said Dean Moore, Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Cook North America. “Following our recent review of the Sunquest business and specifically its charter flying program, WestJet provides us with the level of flexibility we needed, as well as the opportunity to expand our product offering by taking advantage of the significant scale of WestJet’s fleet and the breadth of their network.” With this partnership, Sunquest will have access to airline seat capacity from WestJet’s existing flight network. The airline features a modern fleet of 98 Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft that flies a network of 76 cities throughout North America and the Caribbean. “In light of our recent decision to discontinue deploying Thomas Cook aircraft in Canada, the extension of the WestJet agreement is a natural choice as it has operated a significant portion of Sunquest’s winter flying program since the 2009-2010 season and the full summer program since 2010,” continued Moore. “It acts as the perfect complement to our product and enables us to provide exceptional vacation experiences from start to finish.” Amid all the buzz surrounding the new partnership, travel professionals are asking about the state of WestJet Vacations, and how WestJet’s tour PM40015622 Apr26.indd 1 12-04-23 1:01 PM 7RURQWR'HSDUWXUHV:HHN Air + Hotel The Mill Resort & Suites Aruba ËËËPLUS Royal Room Jun 04, 11 & 18 595 $ + $330 taxes Air + Hotel Manchebo Beach Resort & Spa ËËËPLUS Deluxe Gardenview Room Jun 04, 11 & 18 945 $ + $330 taxes All Inclusive Riu Palace Aruba ËËËËË Hotel Room Jun 04, 11 & 18 $ + $330 taxes )RUPRUHKRWHOVYLVLWVLJQDWXUHYDFDWLRQVFRP_)RUFRPSOHWHVHOHFWLRQRIWKHPRVWFXUUHQW6LJQDWXUHÁ\HUVYLVLWDJHQWVVLJQDWXUHYDFDWLRQVFRP2SHQ-DZ)D[%RDUGRU7UDYHO +RW1HZV)D[([WUD7UDYHOLQIRFD$OOSURGXFWLVDYDLODEOHWKURXJK*DOLOHR9DFDWLRQV6DEUHYDFDWLRQV$PDGHXVZZZVLUHYFRPRUE\FDOOLQJRU 7RURQWRGHSDUWXUHV3ULFHVDUHSHUSHUVRQEDVHGRQGRXEOHRFFXSDQF\IRURQHZHHNYDFDWLRQSDFNDJHVXQOHVVRWKHUZLVHVSHFLÀHG6HDWVDWDERYHSULFHVDUH limited and capacity controlled and were available at the time of printing. Avalon customizes with new Avalon Choice concept TORONTO – Just when you thought river cruising couldn’t get any better, along comes Avalon Choice by Avalon Waterways, an entirely new concept. Avalon Choice gives river cruisers the freedom to personalize their cruise, from beginning to end. Starting in 2013, Avalon passengers can choose from three tour types: new Essential Sightseeing, Traditional Sightseeing and Leisurely Sightseeing. Essential Sightseeing gives travellers a basic orientation with the mustsees, along with the freedom of time to explore on their own. Traditional offers cruisers the typical on-shore sightseeing they’ve always enjoyed. And lastly, Leisurely Sightseeing takes things at a slower pace. Additionally, Avalon will be providing Nordic walking stocks for active guests next year, as well as an alternative sightseeing experience aided by a new Guest Services team. With the introduction of Avalon Choice Dining, at every meal cruisers can choose from an array of dining experiences throughout each day, including special culinary events. These range from a five-course Welcome Dinner with complimentary sparkling wine and canapés to tastings of local delicacies and meals prepared by local chefs. “We’ll continue to offer breakfast, lunch and four- or five-course dinners in our elegant main dining rooms, but we’ll introduce light dinners with local specialties and regional wines in the new Panorama Bistro on our five Panorama class ships,” said Stéphanie Bishop, managing director of Avalon Waterways in Canada. In addition to choosing what they eat and where, passengers can select when they want to dine. Early birds can dine daily early, while late-riser breakfasts and night fare (served at 10:30 p.m.) are ideal for those who peak at later times during the day. Also part of the Avalon Choice program, guests can attend exclusive onboard Culture & Cruise activities that include food, beer and wine tastings, and demonstrations by local artisans and talks by local experts. “In listening to our customers, we’ve learned that both the itinerary and available shore excursions are crucial when they select a cruise,” added Bishop. “So we’ve greatly expanded Become B ecome a Grand Grand Wailea Wailea Resort Resort Specialist S pecialist ffor or y your our chance chance to to WIN! Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit host first ever Tianguis outside Acapuclo By Jeannie Norton PUERTO VALLARTA — Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit were all dressed up and ready for company when 7,000 tourism professionals turned up for the 37th annual Tianguis Turistico, Mexico’s largest travel trade show late last month. This is the first time Tianguis has been held outside Acapulco, and attendance was up 75%. Next year it will be held in Puebla. Welcome banners were everywhere, from the airport to the main streets. The Malecon had a six-month overhaul for the event, the cabbies all went to charm school, and it seemed as though the entire area was ready to welcome participants who hailed from all over the world. President Felipe Calderon flew directly from meeting with the Pope in Guanajuato to open this year’s convocation. Gloria Guevara, Mexico’s secretary of tourism, said moving Tianguis from its former location in Acapulco presented a number of opportunities. “Today we start a new stage to strengthen a greater [representation] of destinations,” she said. “Being itinerant allows us to know Mexico better and promote the region better.” After taking the stage, Calderon congratulated the Mexican states of Jalisco, where Puerto Vallarta is located, and Nayarit, which borders Puerto Vallarta, for jointly hosting the successful event. “Nayarit and Jalisco will demonstrate how to do this – united we will show Mexico how to do this,” Calderon told the audience. Calderon said the government is expecting 140 million pesos (approximately US$11 million) in revenue from this year’s event, which would be considerably higher than what was produced by the 2011 event. Calderon said Mexico is making a historically large investment in its infrastructure – approximately $14 billion, with more than $1.7 billion dedicated to the building and improvement of highways between major cities and tourism destinations. Major projects include new airports. Right after the opening, he left to inaugurate Secrets Vallarta Bay and Now Amber, the first new resorts built in the downtown area in a decade. Piers Morgan, in his speech reminded participants that Puerto Vallarta had one robbery in decades, no one was hurt but it got world press. Manuel Montelongo, director of Tourism Mexico in Montreal, Rodrigo Esponda, director in Toronto, and Cesar Mendoza, director in Western Canada held a press conference for Canadian media to discuss Canadian tourists visiting Mexico. In 2011, 1,563,000 Canadians visited Mexico. This represents a 9.1% increase over 2010 numbers and maintains Mexico’s position as the second most visited country for Canadians behind the United States. Recent incidents involving Canadians in Mexico are tragic but it is important that context be provided. Rodrigo Esponda said, “Canada has always had a love affair with Mexico. We are hospitable, so are you. Canadians love the culture, the food, the people, and of course the weather and the beaches.” He also praised the strong efforts of our tour operators: Thomas Cook, Transat, Air Canada Vacations, WestJet and Sunwing. Uniworld to unveil new luxury ship in 2013 In 2013, working closely with ship owner Douro Azul, Uniworld will introduce another new luxury ship called the Queen Isabel. The Queen Isabel will replace the Douro Spirit, which Uniworld inaugurated in 2011. Business class passengers will be able to travel with two items of hand baggage, weighing up to 9kg per item, while the carry-on allowance for economy class passengers will be increased by 2kg on all routes to 8kg. Sir Royston O. Hopkin, KCMG, owner and chairman of the awardwinning resort, made a recent visit to Toronto to meet with members of the press. Joined by his wife Lady Betty Hopkin, the property’s director, Jenny Gumbs, Hon. Consul General of Grenada, as well as Brent and Elaine Carnegie from Canlink Travel Representatives, which represents the resort in Canada, Hopkin shared the latest news from the resort as well as his early memories from when he first took over the reins 26 years ago. “When I first bought the resort it was a tired, little yet wonderful place on Grenada’s most beautiful beach,” he said. “Now, we have a property that can match the best hotels in the world.” With help from his three children, all general managers at the resort, as well as 230 employees affectionately referred to as “extended family”, Hopkin has expanded the once tiny hotel into a luxurious, AAA FourDiamond boutique resort that sprawls across eight acres on world-renowned Grand Anse Beach. It features 32 beachfront suites, all with balconies or patios, LCD televisions, private bathrooms with whirlpool baths and fine Italian linens. Room categories include the Seagrape Beach Suites, which lie directly on the beach and come with oceanview tubs, private gardens and double hammocks. In Anthurium Pool Suites, guests can enjoy the utmost in privacy, thanks to a private entrance that leads to a personal garden and plunge pool. Luxury Almond Pool Suites truly impress with 20-foot swimming pools and private outdoor dining terraces, while the Royal Collection Pool Suites feature outdoor cedar saunas, living rooms and marble bathrooms. For the most discerning clients, nothing can beat the Saffron and Cinnamon Suites, which encompass more than 1,400 square feet and come equipped with a separate living area, dining room, wet bar, master bedroom with floating canopy bed, two bathrooms and extended private gardens. And if that wasn’t enough to please luxury clients, the resort has introduced a new Special Services Coordinator for guests staying in the Royal Collection, Cinnamon and Saffron Suites. Available from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., the coordinator personally assists guests with any requirements they may have. Other resort amenities that are included in the resort’s fully-inclusive ‘Spice-of-Life’ experience include golf green fees, non-motorized water sports, fitness centre, breakfasts and dinners at Oliver’s Restaurant, lunch and pre-dinner cocktails at Sea and Surf Terrace & Bar, premium label drinks and house wines, afternoon tea, complimentary high-speed Internet in every room and much more. But perhaps the most impressive amenity of Spice Island Beach Resort is Sir Hopkin himself, who Elaine Carnegie described as being very involved in day-to-day operations. “You can find Mr. Hopkin at the resort every day, including weekends,” she said. “He knows everything that’s going on at the resort and with all his guests. This isn’t just your average Caribbean resort – it’s a family-run property that feels more like home.” And to hammer the point even further, Hopkin was quick to mention he addresses every single customer comment card personally. “I thank those who leave behind positive comments, and respond to those who leave suggestions on how to improve,” he said. “Listening to both the good and the bad is the only way to move forward.” To get to Grenada, considered the ‘Spice Isle’ of the Caribbean, clients can take advantage of Caribbean Airlines’ year-round, non-stop flights between Toronto and Grenada, which operates every Thursday and Friday. Cancun celebrates 42nd birthday and the year of the Mayas CANCUN – Middle aged has never looked better. Earlier this month, Cancun – the much beloved strip of Caribbean coastline – celebrated its 42nd birthday, a milestone moment considering just how far the destination has come. In 1967, Cancun was an uninhabited place comprised of mangroves and deserted beaches. Even then, its founders saw the city’s potential and within three years, successfully turned it into a viable beach destination. Playing a significant role in its development were the Bank of Mexico and several other financial institutions, including The InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB). Today, Cancun bustles with excitement and welcomes over three million tourists every year, of which 65% come from international destinations. The city’s tourism infrastructure has made incredible strides in the past four decades, and today comprises the second largest airport in the country, four 5-star hotels and a growing number of world-class golf sites. There’s also no shortage of fun attractions and activities to entertain visitors. During their stay, guests can swim with whale sharks, zip line through the jungle, explore mystic Mayan communities, dive into an underwater museum and dine at a number of fine dining establishments.
