“MY DOCTOR SAID JOGGING COULD ADD YEARS TO MY LIFE. HE WAS RIGHT — I FEEL 10 YEARS OLDER ALREADY.” Western student LeAnne Dyck and staff member
Brian Groot are travelling to Rio De Janeiro this summer to raise money for the Canadian Diabetes Association.
UWO students run to Rio to fight diabetes
By Claire Neary
Gazette Staff
Until a couple weeks ago, Western student LeAnne Dyck and
staff member Brian Groot had
never met. Now they’re both
training hard and brainstorming
fundraising ideas with Team Diabetes, a Canadian Diabetes Association fundraising initiative. As
the only London representatives,
the pair will travel with the CDA
to Rio de Janeiro to run a
marathon in June.
Dyck and Groot chose Rio de
Janeiro from several international ventures offered by the CDA
and must fundraise $6,100 in various instalments by their
marathon date.
According
to
Courtney
Sidsworth, a Team Diabetes assistant, once trip costs are covered,
all the money raised by each participant will go towards the CDA’s
mission to promote Canadians’
health through diabetes research,
education, services and advocacy.
Dyck, a fifth-year medical science and Ivey student, heard about
Team Diabetes after her grandfather suffered a serious diabetesrelated heart attack. She also has a
close friend living with type-1 diabetes and she wanted to help
somehow.
She immediately knew she had
found her cause.
“Team Diabetes fits in well with
raising awareness because it promotes a healthy lifestyle,” Dyck
said.
Groot is a 21-year-old seasoned
marathon runner from Strathroy
who works as an apprentice at university machine services in the
Thompson Engineering Building.
He already has three marathons
under his belt and is excited to go
to Brazil because it will help him
complete his goal of running a
marathon on every continent,
including Antarctica.
He said his family also has a history of diabetes, so raising money
for the CDA will make this
marathon his most important to
date.
Though Dyck has never run a
marathon before, she looks forward
to the personal challenge.
“The [CDA] has a partnership
with The Running Room, so I’ll
start training with them soon, and
I’m already doing weights and running both outside and at the
gym...But I’m really going to have to
get my mileage up soon if I’m going
to get through 42 kilometres.”
Groot is currently doing one 2530 kilometre run per week along
with swimming and biking. He said
when the marathon approaches
he’ll run up to 80 kilometres per
week.
To raise the money Dyck and
Groot have had to get creative. Both
have received support from their
friends and families, and they are in
the process of organizing events
like pub nights at The Barking Frog
and Jim Bob Ray’s.
Groot plans to hold a barbecue
at Superstore in Strathroy, and he’s
also working on organizing a betting pool for how long it will take
him to finish.
“I’m confident I’ll finish in
under three and a half hours, but
3:20 would be great,” Groot said.
“So that will be the most expensive
time to buy.”
“I’ve never done this before, and
people keep asking how I’m going
to get through it,” Dyck said. “But I
know I can get through it. I’m promoting health, my grandpa’s walking all the time, and everyone
wants me to finish.”

Scientist making baked goods filled with caffeine
By Shobhita Sharma
Gazette Staff
Do you need a caffeine fix but hate
the taste?
A scientist has developed a way
to eliminate caffeine’s bitter taste by
adding it to baked goods.
Dr. Robert Bohannon, who
owns Sips Coffee & Tea café and
runs Environostics Inc. in North
Carolina, has devised a way to give
caffeine lovers a buzz through food
like bagels and donuts.
“I was sitting with my milk and
donut one day, and thought that I
needed a jump,” Bohannon said. “I
ordered some food-graded caffeine
and asked a local baker to add it to
donuts for me. But, the taste was
very bitter.”
Since then, Bohannon has been
developing a way to mask caffeine’s
bitter taste by creating “buzzed”
baked goods.
“The process is called microencapsulation,” he said. “Small
solid particles of caffeine are taken
and coated with some sort of edible material like vegetable oil. This
way you can’t taste [the caffeine]
anymore.”
Elisabeth Bright-See, a professor
at Brescia University College and a
nutrition expert, believes Bohannon is just attempting to add his
products to the “addictive” list.
“There is no valid reason for
adding caffeine to anything,” she
said. “It’s not a necessary part of our
diets.”
Dr. Leonard Piche, a registered
dietitian and nutrition professor at
Brescia, is concerned about “buzz”
products’ effect on children. He
said children already consume too
much caffeine through pops and
energy drinks and he believes
adding baked goods could make
things worse.
Bohannon doesn’t believe his
products are a health concern.
“We are not talking about five
grams of caffeine,” he said. “It’s just
a cup of coffee.”
Although many university students love caffeinated products,
several Western students disliked
the idea of “buzz donuts” and “buzz
bagels.”
Rahul Malhotra, a third-year
engineering student at Western,
said he prefers conventional means
of caffeine intake like coffee.
Michelle Maccarone, a fourthyear psychology student, disliked
the idea.
“I think it’s just going too far,”
she said. “We are already putting
enough caffeine in our bodies.”
Bohannon predicts his industry
could become a $100-billion market. Although the product isn’t
commercial yet, he said 1,000 convenience stores are willing to sell
his products and he’s currently
looking into collaborating with
larger manufacturers like Krispy
Kreme Donuts and Starbucks.

SOMETHING TELLS US THIS GUY’S WINGIN’ IT ON TOMORROW’S EXAM. University of Utah students recently staged a “group howl” to relieve study stress. At Western, we stick with traditional
human bitching and complaining.
Utah students howl at stress
By Mary Ann Boateng
Gazette Staff
Library officials consider howls foul
at Utah State University.
Two hundred students gathered
in the Merrill-Cazier Library at USU
to relieve stress by howling louder
than Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf.
This “group howl” event originally took place last year before
spring exams, with only one student participating. However, word
has spread to the student body, and
this fall 200 students met at the
library to scream out their preexam jitters.
The event drew protest from
library officials.
“If students need a pressure
relief, the appropriate place is not
in a library where other students
are trying to study,” said John
Elsweiler,
the
Merrill-Cazier
library’s associate director of public services.
This issue was taken to USU’s
SUPERBOWL
S UNDAY
student government last week
where the executive council met
with the event’s creators. The executive council spoke with creators
Eric Defries, Jonathan Kidd, and
Christopher Young to discuss the
problems and future implications
surrounding the event.
The student government understands the howls will happen with
their approval or not, said Noah
Ridley, USU’s student government
president.
“The council’s biggest concern
is meeting with library officials to
make sure the howling is not
offending anyone,” Ridley added.
Officials don’t want the group
howl eliminated, but they would
rather this event “occur somewhere
outside the library, or elsewhere on
campus,” Elsweiler said.
Ridley said he sees no problem
with having the event outside.

Students deserve
a say on where
their money goes
Last week, the University Students’ Council rejected a
motion to hold a student referendum on whether or not
to help fund Western’s Student Refugee Program with a
22-cent student fee. SRP sponsors refugee students so
they can attend Canadian post-secondary institutions.
The initiative is admirable and would provide many
advantages, such as helping refugees from areas of the
world without the educational resources and access to
financial aid available in Canada.
The federal government has recently cut funding
toward similar programs and a student levy would provide a stable income source for Western’s refugee program.
Western can also benefit from the added diversity of
international students who bring different perspectives
and cultures to the classroom and community.
The effort would also be good for the school’s image.
However, some students may object to paying a
mandatory student fee to SRP because supporting a particular cause should be a personal choice. Obligatory support may counteract the altruism behind the act of giving.
As well, many students already depend on student
loans or struggle to make ends meet, so it might be unfair
in principle to ask them to contribute to the tuition or living costs of other students. Yes, the student fee is just 22
cents, but donating to one cause could open the door to
countless other donations.
Lastly, some students may have political objections to
supporting such a cause.
There are other ways for groups to raise money, and as
it stands, the program receives much of its funding
through fundraising and partnerships with Western.
Yet beyond the argument itself, perhaps the largest
issue is why the USC didn’t let Western students decide
for themselves whether or not to add the fee.
The USC could’ve accepted the motion and let the
question go to a student referendum. Instead, councillors
voted without the input of the students they supposedly
represent. Many students were unaware this vote was
occurring.
The USC could’ve treated the issue like last year’s
recreation centre student fee and run another “yes” and
“no” campaign.
Eighty-five per cent of SRP’s fees come from student
levies, and many other Canadian have already tackled the
initiative by adding a yearly student fee.
Hypothetically, the USC could reopen the debate and
gather the perspectives of students via plebiscite. This
would give the students an official medium to speak on
the issue without binding the USC to any course of action.

Missing Re-reading Safe sex
Macey religion in with latex
To the Editor:
A space once occupied by a daily witty
diversion has been replaced with mazes
in various forms such as an egg, a car
and a bow-loving teddy bear. Is this the
most creative The Gazette staff can be or
has Brice Hall left us to join “The Buried
Life”?
Are these merely attempts to fill
space until his hopeful return? Since the
beginning of the semester I have eagerly opened each issue of The Gazette only
to be disappointed by the disappearance
of The Gazette’s best content this year.
What happened to “Macey Lane”? If
readers don’t know what I’m talking
about, maybe Mr. Hall might be inspired
to grace us with his endearing depictions of what a Western girl “is” at least a
couple more times. Pretty please, with a
cherry on top?

‘O Canada’
Re: “Zener bites back”
Jan. 24, 2007
To the Editor:
Rebecca Zener should read our national
anthem closer before refusing to sing it.
Of the three “religious references” she
objects to, only “God keep our land” is
cause for concern, though it’s purposefully and properly vague.
As for the other two, “thy sons” isn’t a
reference to God’s son, but rather to
Canada’s sons — plural, not possessive
singular — in whom Canada is exhorted
to inspire true patriot love.
The French version’s “It knows how to
bear the cross” is a common figure of
speech indicating strength and humility. That this figure of speech comes from
a religious story hardly constitutes the
establishment of a state religion.
“Religious references” themselves
aren’t harmful to the separation of
church and state. After all, religion manifestly exists and is unquestionably
important in Canadian citizens’ lives
and in the story of this country’s growth.
I, for one, would like both my anthem
and my representatives to reflect that
truth rather than ignore it.

To the Editor:
Thursday’s Campus Life feature “Today’s
young people not wearing condoms” left
me bemused and slightly disturbed.
Perhaps because I’ve taken sex psych,
I’m more informed than the average
humper, but in any case, why the hell
would someone rather have an STI than
use a condom?
For the nth time, even if you (or your
lover) use birth control, this doesn’t protect either of you against chlamydia or
any other likely-awful-to-have sex infections. People who really want sex do it
with a condom. If you’re too shy or too
scared to ask your partner to use one,
then maybe you shouldn’t be having sex.
The article’s notion that “familiarity
and trust are no substitute for latex” is
bang on. If the two of you are each
other’s only partner ever, then fair
enough, you’re less likely to be infected.
If not, your partner’s potential asymptomatic infection doesn’t disappear just
because you’ve built trust over the past
six months.
If you have lots of sex and you’re looking to dodge infection, wrap your piece
and don’t condom-hate.

Smokin’ Aces packs strong ensemble cast
Assassination thriller plot can’t keep up with actors
By Tyler Kula
Smokin’ Aces has lots of smoke,

Buddy “Aces” Israel (Jeremy

ruthers (Ray Liotta) and Richard
Messner (Ryan Reynolds) try desperately to keep him alive so they
can use his testimony to bring
down the mob.
Liotta and Reynolds give
strong performances. Reynolds’
volatile scenes with the FBI’s
regional director (Andy Garcia)
are particularly startling and
effective. Though Reynolds is
known for playing wise-cracking,
tongue-in-cheek-type characters,
his intense performance shows
his acting range.
Ben Affleck plays Jack
Dupree, a Vegas bail
bondsman trying to
capture Israel with
the help of two
e x cops
(Martin Henderson and Peter
Berg).
Affleck does an excellent job
conveying his sleazy character.
His gruff demeanor is a welcome
change from his usual pretty-boy
performances.
Smokin’ Aces comedic character is Rip Reed (Jason Bateman),
an open-minded informant for
Dupree. Bateman’s witty but awkward quips are almost enough to
keep viewers from wondering
where the sores
around
his
mouth came
from.
Though
his performance
is slightly
idiomatic,
Piven plays Israel well. Piven portrays Israel as a strung-out and
increasingly suicidal character
with feigned confidence. Initially
Israel resembles Piven’s tightlywound and irreverent character
from Entourage. However, once
Israel collapses into the deadly
bed he has made for himself,
Piven reveals his diverse acting
skills.
While Smokin’ Aces’ actors are
impressive, its plot isn’t. The
skilled cast adds some — but not
enough — class to the formulaic
gore and gunfire-filled storyline.
The Smokin’ Aces’ premise is
simple: bad things happen without cause or reason. If there’s an
underlying meaning to the film’s
centre, it’s lost amidst the obscure
anarchy of interweaving ambitions and excessive violence.
While Smokin’ Aces seems
complex, it doesn’t offer anything to validate its complexity, resulting in an
appealing but forgettable film.
Golden Dogs released onto rock ‘n’ roll fans
By Erik Adler
Gazette Staff
Toronto’s resident party band, The
Golden Dogs, has a big eye for
beautiful music.
Since releasing their first LP, Big
Eye Little Eye, last fall, The Golden
Dogs have become a favourite of
critics and fans alike.
Lead singer Dave Azzolini is
pleased with his band’s success.
“When we first heard we were
going into the studio, there was just
a sense of excitement,” Azzolini
says. “This was a point I had wanted to get to since I was doing fourtrack recordings as a kid.”
Azzolini says Big Eye Little Eye’s
frenzied dance-rock sound translates well onstage.
“I always pictured these songs
on the live side of things from the
start, and there’s definitely been an
evolution,” he says. “Some songs
stay really close to the original
arrangement; others have taken on
a completely different sound.
“Playing live over the last few
years, we’ve gravitated towards our
strengths as a band. Just the same,
our strengths have been honed
through live performance. They go
hand in hand, really.”
Despite embracing its musical
development, the band has continually changed its lineup. Azzolini
hopes this “revolving door” policy
is over.
“I came to Toronto to find people to play with as a band,” he
says. “We’ve been looking for a
‘tribe’ for five years; people came
and went, but realistically and
musically, this [current lineup] is
what I was looking for. I think it’s
here to stay.”
The Golden Dogs’ current line-
up is Azzolini, his wife and keyboardist Jessica Grassia, drummer
Taylor Knox, guitarist Neil Quin and
bassist Stew Heyduk.
After spending numerous hours
on the road together, Azzolini says
the band has adjusted to the “ceremony of touring.”
“It’s pretty draining to be on the
road so much, and switch to being
‘on’ every night,” he says. “I think
the people you’re with have a huge
effect on the success or failure of
living in that environment.
“As it stands, we all seem to feed
off of each other, both onstage and
off.”
The Golden Dogs also feed off
their fans’ energy and inspiration.
“In my experience, every crowd
will have people that are there for
all kinds of reasons, but more and
more I feel they’re there for the
album,” Azzolini says.
THIS IS WHAT

PRANKS WITH
R O G A I N E .
Toronto’s Golden Dogs try and
avoid lame cutlines while playing Call the
Office tomorrow night.
“All I know is rock ‘n’ roll shows.
I know I’m having fun because the
crowd is having fun. They’re
screaming out the songs, jumping
around — it’s just a party.”
Azzolini says the band’s shows
are always energetic and sweaty.
“We’ll ram our rock ‘n’ roll fists
down people’s throats, and whether
you like the taste of the fist or not,
well, it’s up to you.”
The Golden Dogs play alongside
Yoko Casionos and Oh! The Pretty
Things at Call The Office tomorrow
night. Tickets are $5 at the door. The
show starts at 9:30 p.m.

Western enjoys a winning weekend
Two goals called

men capitalize to
beat Badgers

REASON TO CELEBRATE. Western topped Guelph on Saturday and Brock on Sunday to improve to
6-9-1-1 on the season. The win gives the Mustangs hope for a postseason birth.
Women top Brock at home
By Mallory Daley
Gazette Staff
Afer shutting out the Guelph
Gryphons Saturday, Western’s
women’s hockey team (6-9-1-1)
froze the Brock Badgers (6-7-3-1)
in a crucial victory Sunday afternoon at Thompson Arena. The
women in purple skated hard for
three periods to capture a 3-1 win.
Nearing the end of the regular
season and just three points out of
a playoff spot, Western brought its
“A” game.
With tremendous hustle and
unyielding puck possession, the
starting line went to work quickly.
Forward Bianca Emanuele tallied
the first goal just 1:08 into the first
period.
“We wanted to make sure that
we were getting to the net,” said
Mustangs head coach Paul Cook.
“We did that early on and we created some good opportunities for
ourselves.”
Riding a 1-0 lead through most
At
of the first, the Mustangs dominated Brock’s end with a forceful
offence while maintaining solid
defence.
“Our penalty killing was awesome,” Emanuele said. “We had so
many penalties [against us]…but
we worked hard and just never
gave up.”
The Badgers got possession just
long enough to tie the game with
3:51 left in the first period.
A proficient power play complemented Western’s gritty penalty killing. With a Badger in the box,
forward Lindsay Doxtator fired a
slapper from just inside the blueline to bump the Mustangs ahead
with 9:04 left in the second period.
“[Western] did a good job at
containing us,” said Brock head
coach Todd Erskine. “They outworked us in a lot of areas and that
was the difference.”
The Mustangs kept dancing
around the Badgers at both ends
of the ice. After intricate power-

play passing, Kristen Whitney
tapped in a deflected puck to
widen Western’s lead.
The Mustangs stymied the Badgers in the third to clinch the 3-1
win.
“We knew they were going to be
working hard today,” Erskine said.
“We didn’t really get any chances
to mount any type of attack.”
Sunday’s game capped an
important weekend for the Mustangs’ Ontario University Athletics
playoff push.
“The girls have really stepped
up this week with back-to-back
games [Saturday] and [Sunday],”
Cook said. “They’ve really made
the commitment to dedication
and hard work. We had a good
turnaround this weekend.”
The ’Stangs, now one point out
of a playoff position, have seven
regular season games remaining
and some tough opponents
ahead.
“We’re going to take it one
game at a time right now,” Cook
said. “Every game for us is a big
one. It’s as simple as that.”

Western’s men’s hockey team was
in full stride heading into its
weekend tilt against the Brock
Badgers, having won five straight
games. Saturday night was no different as the high-flying Mustangs
downed the Badgers 4-1 on home
ice.
Western opened the scoring
after an uneventful first period.
Forward Sal Peralta circled into the
high slot on the power play and fed
a wide-open Jesse Boucher at the
side of the net — a gimme for his
13th tally of the season and his fifth
in his last five games.
The Mustangs doubled the lead
43 seconds later on a two-man
advantage. After a turnover behind
the Badgers’ net, the puck squirted
out front to captain Craig Kennedy,
who fed linemate Steve Benedetti
for his 10th of the season and the
eventual game-winner.
Benedetti discussed how well
the team has jelled since the first
half of the season.
“It’s the things we’re doing on
the ice that make the difference,”
he said. “The first half of the year,
the guys were not concentrating on
their roles, and now we’re playing
better hockey and everyone is on
the same page.”
The Badgers, who are jockeying
for a playoff position, turned the
momentum 43 seconds into third
and cut the lead to 2-1. Brock, who
outshot Western 32-26, capitalized
on a neutral-zone turnover which
eventually sprung forward Tyler
Leggo on a breakaway. Leggo beat
Western netminder Brad Topping
through the five-hole for his seventh of the season.
Not to be outdone, a feisty Mustangs offence restored the two-goal
advantage when Jesse Boucher
danced out from behind the net to
fire his second of the game behind
Badgers goalie Matthew Harpwood.
The game wasn’t without controversy, as two Badgers goals were

called back, the second of which
would have cut the Western lead to
3-2 midway through the third.
“At that point, it was our third
goal because we had one called
back against us in the early part of
the game,” said Badgers coach
Murray Nystrom. “In that particular case, we thought our player was
pushed into Topping.”
Topping’s solid performance
included timely saves.
“I thought Topping was good,
but he was really good at the right
times,” Nystrom said. “He made
some key saves when we were
swarming and that’s a credit to him
and the Western team — they’re
going to be dangerous in the playoffs.”
The prospect of playoff hockey
should make for an exciting series
two weekends from now in Thunder Bay, where the Mustangs play
the second half of a four-game
home-and-home set against the
Lakehead Thunderwolves.
“We get up for games like that
and we love playing Lakehead,”
Benedetti said. “We’ve got a lot of
guys that have been here for a while
and the new guys are learning what
it’s like.”
Western bench boss Clarke
Singer’s calculated and unwavering
one-game-at-a-time approach to
winning has kept the ’Stangs
focused.
“You’ve got to keep looking forward to the next shift and build on
what happened, then move forward,” Singer said, “I think we did
that tonight by sticking to our
game.”
According to Singer, this stoic
composition shone through Saturday at the John Labatt Centre. He
cited balance and role players as
the team’s greatest strengths moving forward.
“We’ve got three or four lines
that are not only playing well but
doing a good job in their roles,”
Singer said. “I really like where we
are right now — we’re playing hard
and physical, and I like the way we
match up in the playoffs.”
