Another Great Accomplishment
Meadowlark Middle
School is getting a new
bridge to the portable
classrooms, thanks to
Jorian Stevens of Troop
731 at Clemmons United
Methodist Church.
Jorian, is a rising
sophomore at West
Forsyth began writing his
Eagle Scout Project
Proposal at the age of 14,
right after graduating from
Meadowlark.
He expected to have it completed before the summer was
over. At the time, he had no idea what it would take for a
project of this magnitude. Now thirteen months and $4260
in donations later, he is ready to break ground. He hopes to
complete it by August 17th when the teachers return.
This past March, Jorian finally had everything he needed
to get a permit. His next obstacle was that he could not
begin construction until he had all the materials. He started
fundraising July 1st to earn the $4260 necessary to build.
He now has all the commitments he needs from material and
monetary donations combined.
Jorian has since obtained the building permit, had a mini
excavator and operators services donated and has ordered
the utilities to be located through city link. He is currently
ready to break ground. The only thing he needs now is 8 or
9 days of good weather.
Good luck to you, Jorian.
Ms. Ruby Gallagher and Grand Master Ginger Gallagher
competed in the U.S. Open ISKA World Martial Arts
Championships in Orlando, FL in July and brought home 7
awards. Ms. Gallagher won 3rd in weapons, 4th in traditional
kata and 3rd in sparring. Grand Master Gallagher won 2nd
in weapons, 2nd in creative kata, 5th in traditional kata and
4th in sparring. “We’re proud of their hard training and of
how they represented Karate International.” said the
Jorian Stevens – 15yrs, Town of Lewisville Student
spokesperson for Karate International of Lewisville.

Health Information
Lupus Awareness Month
Everyone knows the month of October is Breast Cancer
Awareness Month. There’s no doubting it, with all the pink
ribbons, Race for the Cure, media reminders and a host of
other great functions. The effort that has gone in to making
October Breast Cancer Awareness Month is commendable.
The results are amazing. But did you know there is another
serious health issue which has October as it’s awareness
month? Probably not. Most people are as unaware of Lupus, as they are of October being Lupus Awareness Month.
Our mission is familiarize you with the facts on Lupus. So
next October, perhaps you’ll think of both of these serious
illnesses. The following information is provided by The Lupus Foundation of the Triad.
Lupus Erythematosis is a chronic inflammatory and
sometimes disabling disease, which causes the body to fight
against itself. There are three types of Lupus: Discoid (DLE),
primary skin involvement; Systemic (SLE), the more serious
form, which can affect the heart, blood vessels, lungs, kidneys,
nervous system, blood, skin, joints, brain, muscles, tendons,
membranes, or any combination of these; and Drug Induced
Lupus (DILE), which usually disappears when certain
prescription drugs are discontinued. Lupus is NOT a
contagious or malignant disease.
Lupus may produce one or any combination of the following
symptoms: excessive fatigue and weakness, low grade fever,
chills, muscle aches, blood cell changes, kidney problems,
joint pain, and/or swelling, skin rashes,
chest pain, weight loss, shortness of breath, adverse reaction
to the sun and other damaging lights, mouth and nasal ulcers,
mental changes, or paralysis. Lupus can be fatal with severe
blood cell changes, kidney problems, heart problems and/
or lung problems. Symptoms may come and go rapidly and
seem unbelievable to others. Most lupus patients look well
when symptoms are not present. They may sometimes feel
it’s all in his or her mind.
Lupus can mime almost any other disease; there are blood
tests that can be run to help your doctor in diagnosis. With
early, accurate diagnosis and proper treatment, the Lupus
patient today has a better chance for a long life than was true
10 to 20 years ago.
The cause of Lupus is unknown. Research has shown that
symptoms of Lupus may show an increase during times of
emotional and physical stress, excessive sun, florescent and
other UV lights, heat or other environmental exposures,
infections, fatigue, following pregnancy, and certain
medications in some persons. Lupus research is
being done at many medical centers across the country

“LUPUS IS MORE PREVALENT THAN MULTIPLE
SCLEROSIS, CYSTIC FIBROSIS, SICKLE CELL
ANEMIA AND CEREBRAL PALSY COMBINED
AND CAN BE JUST AS SERIOUS.”
Lupus affects men, women, and children of all ages and
races, with about 90% being women in the childbearing
years. Approximately 35,000 North Carolinians are
diagnosed with Lupus. Folks may have the disease and
not be aware of it due to the difficulty of diagnosis. Lupus

TEE TIME
How to gain more distance with
your Driver!
by Steve Nixon PGA
When golfers start losing distance, it’s only natural to try to
hit harder or swing faster. But this is the opposite of what we
should be doing. It will be a waste of Power. We should
swing with less effort. One of the hardest things for a player
is to learn to pace their swings.

As the old saying goes, “You must feel the force before you
can force the feel”. The correct feel for force starts with the
motion of the lower body (feet & legs). The feet control the
force of the lower body. The motion then works on up to a
free arm swing with a full turn. There will be little feel for this
motion if the grip pressure is too tight. A tight grip builds up
tension in the arms and shoulders. Proper grip pressure
creates a sense of timing, allowing the body to have a smooth
flowing motion from start to finish, not a series of abrupt
actions.
Don’t misunderstand me. I am not saying you will have a
relaxed swing. You cannot stay completely relaxed and free
from all tension. In fact, the weight of the club swinging will
create a slight tension. Tension is the biggest robber of
motion!
So to start regaining distance: Don’t be power oriented. Seek
the knowledge of my 5 simple body actions which will swing
the club in the best plane for that individual to strike the ball
in dead center of the clubface. For example: Many swings
that travel over 100 miles an hour get less distance than a
swing at 85 miles a hour. Why? The 85 mph was hit on the
sweet spot. The over 100 missed the sweet spot by a fraction.
Speed doesn’t mean much if the contact is off-center.

Driving Etiquette
Tips for Mannerly Driving:
1. Speed Limit - Speed limits are posted all over the place. I must admit, it is really hard for me to make my car do
only 25 or 35 mph (miles per hour) Yet some signs implore people to do just that on small roads. Highway driving is
another story. If you cannot do at least the speed limit, for whatever reason, you should be driving in the right lane on
highways, not the left lane. The left lane is for faster moving vehicles or for passing slower vehicles. If you are
driving below the speed limit in the left lane, people will appear to be driving in your trunk. So, no disrespect intended
but please move to the right lane. It may prevent an accident.
2. The Car Horn - What were these people thinking when they invented the car horn? Oh, that’s right, they were
thinking of people avoiding accidents and they were right! People have been frowning on the use of horns for a while
now. Personally, if I stand a chance of hitting someone or someone hitting me, please honk the horn. I agree you don’t
have to lean on the horn, usually a toot or two will do the trick. The horns are really there for a reason. People have
blind spots on their cars and may need to be told your car is in their blind spot.
3. Let them go! - I absolutely hate when I’m trying to pull out of a parking lot or driveway and the light has turned red.
The oncoming cars slow down to a crawl, then the driver of the closest one looks the other way, as if to say, “Oh I
didn’t see you there.” as they block the driveway. Then I’m stuck until a courteous person waves me in. Thank you to
the courteous people and boo hiss to the head turners. Let people in, it doesn’t even delay you 30 seconds. The people
appreciate it and you will feel good about doing the right thing. Remember the golden rule, “Treat others the way you
would like to be treated.”
4. Waving digits - This is a terrible one. Yes, I think you know what I’m talking about. I’ve seen people looking prim
and proper and suddenly someone cuts them off (also rude). They then proceed to yell, shake their head, and wave
their digits in the air. I’ve also seen it with children in the car. I must say that action disgusts me. When your thirteen
year old does that in front of the grandparents one day, can you really yell at them? I think not. Kids watch, listen, learn
and repeat. So lets try to clean it up out there. Think what you want in your head, just don’t express it.
5. The Big Cut-Off - It happens. I noticed a lot of men in pick up trucks do this number. Nothing against men or pick
up trucks, I like them both. But I think perhaps the ego in that big old vehicle gets out of whack. Who’s gonna hit it, a
little lady in a sedan? No, just because you can be rude, doesn’t mean you should. Unless your wife is in their giving
birth, easy does it. You’ll get to your destination and you won’t aggravate other people on the road.
I have to admit, I sound like the little old lady from Pasadena or someone similar giving this advice, but believe me when
I’m behind the wheel I’m different and frankly, I’m always in a hurry myself. But I don’t cut people off or wave digits. I
don’t take the fast lane if I’m not driving fast enough. I let people in from other lanes and driveways and I will honk my
horn rather than hit you.

Make sure they leave home on time so they can walk to the bus stop and arrive before the bus is due.
Walk your young child to the bus stop and have older children walk in groups. There is safety in
numbers; groups are easier for drivers to see.
Practice good pedestrian behavior: walk on the sidewalk, if there is no sidewalk, stay out of the street.
If you must walk in the street, walk single file, face traffic and stay as close to the edge of the road as you
can.
Stop and look left, right and then left again if you must cross the street. Do the same thing at driveways and
alleys.
Don´t let your child play running games or push and shove at the bus stop. It is dangerous near traffic.
Make sure your child stands at least 10 feet (5 giant steps) from the road while waiting for the bus. The
child will then be out of the way of traffic. Have younger children practice taking 5 giant steps to become
familiar with 10 feet.
Warn children that, if they drop something, they should never pick it up. Instead, they should tell the
driver and follow the driver´s instructions. If they bend over to pick up a dropped object, they might
not be seen by the driver and could be hurt if the driver pulls away from the stop
Remind children to look to the right before they step off the bus. Drivers in a hurry sometimes try to sneak
by busses on the right.
Teach your children to secure loose drawstrings and other objects that may get caught in the handrail or
door of the bus as they are exiting.
Give your child a note or follow your school´s procedures if you would like for the child to get off at a stop other
than the one they are assigned. The driver isn´t allowed to let a child off at another stop without written
permission.
If you meet your child at the bus stop after school, wait on the side where the child will be dropped off, not
across the street. Children can be so excited at seeing you after school that they dash across the street and
forget the safety rules.
Children should talk quietly, be courteous to the driver and follow the driver´s instructions.
Children should stay seated during the entire bus ride and keep the aisles clear.

The Benefits of Yoga
by April Liner, RYT200
Huge radio telescopes are used to scan the heavens,
searching out the faintest signal. The larger telescope,
the fainter the signal it can detect.
If we listen to our body, we can pick up the faintest,
earliest warnings that something is amiss.
These messages can be detected long before the health
issue becomes serious.
Ignore these warnings, and your body may have to
literally scream to get your attention!
Be sensitive to things like:
· Changes in digestion or intestinal gas
· Pain when attempting to turn or bend
· A persistent cough or throat clearing
· Increased frequency of urination
· Sudden loss or increase of weight
· Dark circles under the eyes
· Inability to fall asleep or stay asleep
If you’ve been waiting for a problem to “go away on its
own,” call our practice for a thorough examination.

Hooked On The outdoors
By Mike Johnson
As I mentioned in an article a while ago, I am a certified “halfback”…..someone who grew up in the Northeast, moved to
Florida, and has now found their way halfway back up the Eastern seaboard to proudly call North Carolina home. While it
has been some 40 odd years since growing up in the Northeast, the many years of living in Florida did not dim my memory
of places that actually experiences all 4 seasons throughout the course of the year. Part of the excitement about moving
from Florida to North Carolina was to be able to experience 4 seasons again, and for my kids to see a place where not
every day is 80 degrees and sunny
For me Fall was and still is my favorite of the 4 seasons….something about the cool, crispness in the air, the changing of
the colors on the trees, and the onset of football season just has and will always make this time of year my favorite. Now
that said, some now 5+ years living here my attempt to embrace and enjoy the season I so love is to use a term my son
uses often a “FAIL”….2 of the things I have really wanted to do each Fall I have yet to successfully do….yes I guess
despite good reasons why these did not happen….maybe my son was right….FAIL!
First, apple picking. I fondly remember doing this while growing up….it was something we did as a family, and believe it
or not it was also something I did as a “first date activity” on that rare occasion when I got up enough nerve to ask that
special girl out from school (so in other words I spent a lot of time picking apples with my family verses girlfriends while
growing up). In all honesty one really doesn’t need the abundance of apples you’ll pick in a day, but it does not diminish
the fun that can be had enjoying the weather and looking for just those perfect specimens to fill your bushel. Apple pie,
apple butter, apple sauce anyone? For more information about apple picking oppornities and the right time to do this (our
one attempt at this here was one week after all the tress had been picked) in our area check out:
www.pickyourown.org/NCpiedmont.htm.
My next “Fall Fail” is not something I did growing up, but has intrigued me for some strange reason since moving here. I
have wanted to do the whole corn maze thing. You know after the corn is harvested, some places cut a series of mazelike paths through the stalks and then leave it to people to start at one end of the path and try to find their way out. The
one time we attempted this here was long after I guess was peak “mazing” time so when we arrived there was just a few
sad very wilted and sporadic stalks left….needless to say the family was none too happy with me about that. This year
we, or maybe it will just be me, will attempt this again….so you know I will be checking this link to find the right place and
time to do this: www.pumpkinpatchesandmore.org/NCppumpkins.php#listings.
Before wrapping up….a word about our first ever fishing tournament. Since this article needed to be put to press before
the end of the tournament (August 31st) we will be announcing our winners in the next publication. We have had a few
entries, maybe not as many as we hoped for….but we will crown a champion who will earn bragging rights for the year,
and receive a couple dozen doughnuts. Until then my friends, get outside, enjoy this most beautiful of seasons….before
we all blink you know Winter will be upon us again (I know Ugh after what we went through last Winter). Oh yeah…Fall
is a great time to fish too…and for those that do…Tight Lines!!!!
