Runway Report •Fall is in the air, which means we’re seeing more natural elements being tied into weddings. This cake from Beth’s Bake Shoppe is a great example of how 417-land brides are finding creative ways to mix in some seasonal elements. •Besides cool breezes and falling leaves, fall means a shift to warmer, more romantic colors like deep shades of green, burgundy and glowing shades of yellow. These colors work wonderfully in seasonal bridal bouquets, like this hand-tied bridal bouquet from Wickman’s Garden Village with Leonisa roses, apple kale, succulents, American enchantment lilies and wax flowers. • Every where we look, brides are adding more color to their big day. And we’re not the only ones noticing these awesome pops of color. Big Cedar Lodge is seeing brides and grooms choose stunning colors and patterns to tie into their special day. Patterns are making their way to the back of menu cards, place cards and on the ribbon around bouquets. Keep up the good work, brides! •We’re thrilled to hear about the latest wedding trend hitting 417-land. Mitchum Jewelers is seeing an increase in the number of brides choosing a stand-alone piece for their engagement ring and going with a bolder wedding band. Instead of wearing both their engagement ring and their wedding band, today’s brides are wearing just the band when they travel, or even wearing the band on the right hand. It's awesome to have that versatility. “A lot of people go on their honeymoon right after the wedding, but we went 3 days after. I was so glad that I didn’t have to worry about packing while all the last minute wedding details were happening. You would be surprised what can happen. We got a tip from a reader who introduced us to a couple of new restaurants in the alwaysexpanding Joplin food scene. The first one is the newly opened MEs Place Soulfood Café located at 1203 Broadway. MEs looks like a down-home, stick-to-your-ribs kind of restaurant with dishes like homemade chicken and dumplings and meatloaf. If you have eaten there, shoot us an email and give us your input. The other restaurant is very close to opening, and it’s called The Bruncheonette. It will be serving breakfast, brunch (obviously) and lunch. This cute place is located at 424 N. Main. Go ahead and like The Bruncheonette on Facebook to keep up with its progress. The Springfield Mobile Food Park is gaining a new tenant in the very near future. London Calling Pasty Company will bring its double-decker bus and gourmet English comfort food to the streets of 417-land. Stay tuned! Mobile food truck Cecil’s To Go, has posted its menu if you care to take a gander. If you are not familiar with Cecil’s, it’s located at 1421 S. Glenstone Ave. and open Tuesday through Saturday. The Latino flank steak and creole pulled pork flatbread sandwiches are pretty tasty. MaMa Jean’s Natural Market is highlighting its growing selection of gluten-free products by having a gluten-free tasting fair Saturday, October 19. The event is taking place at the East Sunshine Street MaMa Jean’s location from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. You can try items from MaMa Jean's deli and grocery department and even sample some gluten-free beer. Now that Casper’s is open for the season and its chili is available, Nonna’s Italian Café has taken full advantage and added a new special to its repertoire. Nonna’s Three Way features Nonna’s spaghetti smothered in Casper’s chili and topped with Casper’s cheese blend. It’s a delicious napinducing gut bomb, and it’s available at both Nonna’s locations. 417 Magazine Food Wars is still going on. This round features eight locations serving delicious pizza. But before we say goodbye to summer, we decided to Garlic cheese bread from Imo's Pizza look back at our 10 favorite recipes from this summer for your reading and cooking pleasure. Reuben sandwich from Ben's on the Square Smoked pork sandwich at Pappy's Place The feeling I get when I walk into Ristorante Gilardi’s (820-A E. Walnut St., Springfield) today is the same feeling I got when I first stepped inside eight years ago. And that feeling is happiness. Even though ownership changed hands this year, the prompt greeting when you walk in the door, soft lighting, charming atmosphere and incredible service has happily stayed the same. As for the food, it was always great and has actually gotten even better. That is probably because of the over-the-top passion new owner James Martin has for using fresh, local ingredients and making everything from scratch. On this particular night, I had the pleasure of dining with my uncle, Gary Sullivan, his girlfriend Beth Morgan and our close family friends Dick and Anise Pendleton. The good thing about this group is they are all willing to share their food, and Dick knows his way around a wine list. As soon as we sat down, our server notified Beth that actor Don Johnson had just vacated her exact seat. We spent the next 10 minutes trying to figure out if he was still married to Melanie Griffith or not. For the record, he is not. Dick placed the wine order, and then we immediately directed our attention to the menu. I had my heart set on the Insalata alla Cesare, and I wanted to give the eggplant Milano a try since it’s a new addition to the menu. When our server brought out the first course, the aroma of garlic and the drizzle of balsamic vinegar on my Insalata alla Cesare salad triggered my appetite, and I dug in. On top of my salad sat a thin garlic, herb and Parmesan crouton that I crumbled and mixed into my salad. I love garlic, almost in an unhealthy way, and the dressing was packed with it. The sweet tang from the balsamic and the fresh, chilled romaine mellowed the spiciness of the garlic. My only complaint was I forgot to ask for a couple of sardines, and that was completely my fault. As we chatted away and sipped some fabulous wine, out came the second course. The eggplant Milano is a striking dish, and the plate is filled with pops of bright color from all the fresh veggies. In front of me sat two thick slices of crispy panko-breaded eggplant stacked on thin layers of lightly sautéed vegetables and fresh spinach. The dish was finished with an elegant garlic cream sauce that filled the plate and was garnished with dots of dark green basil-chive oil. My first bite was to-die-for. It was creamy and fresh, and the crunch from the salty panko breading that enveloped the mild eggplant was the exact texture needed to complete this dish. It was simply fantastic. We ended our night with two orders of tiramisu. The dessert was light and decadent and left me with the same feeling I had when I walked in the door so many years ago—happiness.—Dylan Whitaker Copyright © 2013 417 Magazine, All rights reserved. unsubscribe from this list update subscription preferences Five for the Weekend 1.
