Introduce/Model
Small Groups
• Read a Rhyme Read aloud the poem “El zapato del
sapo Fulano” several times and have children listen
for words with ending -ato (zapato), -ano (Fulano,
gusano), and -apo (sapo, trapo).
• Model Explain that children will first read all of the
words. Demonstrate how to read each word,
emphasizing their endings -ano, -ato, or -apo. Show
children how to first match the pictures with the
correct words and then sort them into the
corresponding columns. Help children sort and
explain their sort.
Practice the Sort
Independent/Partner
• Have children use the Libro del estudiante to read
each word. Then have them use the grid to sort the
cards by their -ano, -ato, or -apo ending and match
each word with the correct picture.
• Have children check and explain their sorts.
Apply
Independent/Partner/Small Groups
• Read aloud the directions from the Libro del
estudiante p. 152. Have children write words that
rhyme with mano, gato, and sapo.
• Additional Practice See the Resources section to
create additional practice opportunities for children.
• Libro pequeño Read La hormiga y la cigarra with
children. Have them identify words with endings -ano,
-ato, -apo.
Extend the Sort
Alternative Sort: Rhyming Sort
Have children re-sort the cards to make rhyming
pairs. For example: mano/gusano; zapato/gato,
trapo/sapo. Tell children that all cards will not have
a rhyming match. Use the Bonus Words for
additional matches. Then ask them to use each
pair of rhyming words in a sentence.
Vocabulary
Building Vocabulary
Some children may think that the pinsapo (fir)
picture card shows pino (pine). Explain that
pinsapo is a type of pino. Tell children that pinsapo
is a term used when being more specific.
Encourage children who have seen a pinsapo or a
pino to share their experiences.
Bonus Words Activity
Ask children to think of other words that end with
-ano, -ato and -apo. Then have them make word
cards for these new words, as well as for the
Bonus Words (rato, marrano, guapo). Children can
work in pairs to sort by word endings.
Teacher Tip
If children are working with partners to sort words,
remind them that both children should take part in
the activity. Suggest that one child can place a
card while the other child confirms the placement.
Then children can switch roles.
