THE TOWN AND COMMUNE STRZELCE KRAJEŃSKIE
S
trzelce Krajeńskie and its surroundings are situated in the northeastern part of
the Lubuskie province (the southeast of Myślibórz Lake District). In terms of
tourism it is one of the most attractive areas in this part of the country. Due to its
location on the boundary of Pomeranian High Lands and the Proglacial valley of the
Noteć River the area’s topography varies significantly. The last so-called Baltic glaciation
shaped the hilly area, now covered by forests and arable fields, leaving numerous lakes
and streams among the hills. The average height of the land varies between 26 (the
valley of the Sarbina River) and 129 meters above the sea level (a hill called Kawcza
Góra).
The region’s natural resources are vast forests including parts of the Gorzów and
Drawa Forests with protected terrains of the Barlinecko-Gorzowski Landscape Park and
the Drawieński National Park. These places are a nature lovers’ paradise with their marvellous smells of pine trees and spruces, blueberries, fish, mushrooms and water.
The commune covers an area of 318 square kilometers and is inhabited by 18.000
people. It is a typically agricultural region, with prosperous forest economy, well developed trade and services, and developing metallurgical and shoe industries.
The town Strzelce Krajeńskie is situated by the Lake Dolne and the Lake Górne
76 m above the sea level on the former No.1 way from Aquizgran via Berlin, Danzig
to Novogrod, Russia. Presently, it is the national road 22.
The town is an administrative center of the municipal government and it is also a
significant cultural, social, and economic center. The following municipal departments
and organizations have their seats in Strzelce: the County Office and the StrzeleckoDrezdenecki County Council, the County Police Department, the County Fire Department, the County Labor Office, the County Public Prosecutor’s Office, the County Court, the Polish Post Office, and the Forestry Department. There is also a complex net of educational, cultural institutions and various non-government organizations.
The town itself is inhabited by 11.000 residents.

History
T
he interesting history of the contemporary town and its surroundings dates back
to the stone age when the lands were explored by primitive wandering tribesmen.
About 4.000 BC the land was inhabited by tribes living along the Danube. From 1700 to
700 BC- the iron age, the Great-Slavs settled down in the area. The first fortified settlements here (Gardzko near Strzelce, Brzezdno near Chomętowo) were built between the
7th and 10th AD by the Pomeranian Slavs. One of them was probabably a village called
„Strzelcze”. In the process of the development of the Polish national identity the area
was the scene of fratricidal fights between the tribes of the Pomeranians and the Great
Poles. Owing to these facts, the land of Brandenburg took the region over thanks to
Polish-German ancestral relations in the second half of the 13th century. In 1260 a Brandenburg margrave Konrad married a Great Pole princess Konstancja whose dowry
were the areas of the Santok District and the above mentioned village „Strzelcze”. A
couple of years later the margrave built a „castrum”- a hunting castle near the village.
It was attacked and burnt by a Great Pole prince Przemysław II in 1272. Soon after,
margrave Konrad built a strongly fortified town and named it „Vredeberg”- Friedeberg.
As a town, Strzelce was mentioned in a historical document in 1286 for the first time in
the act of foundation of a Cistercian monastery in Bierzwnik-„Marienwalde”. The next
written document from 1290 tells about a monastery built near the Młyńska Gate by the
walls of the town by Augustan monks coming from Lipiany.
In the years 1402- 1454 the area was partly ruled by the Knights of the Teutonic
Order. In 1433 the land of Strzelce was raided by an armed troop of the Czech Hussites who used a trick to enter the town, then burnt the church and the monastery and
murdered the monks.
Throughout the centuries the town experienced rough and tumble of history. It
faced numerous fires, epidemics, as well wars (the 30-year-long, the Swedish, the Northern) all of them tragic in their consequences.
The town’s greatest development occured in the 18th and the 19th century when
new factories and workshops were built, the trade and building prospered, and the number of residents increased rapidly. The pre-war Friedeberg was famous for its educatio-

nal institutions such as the grammar school, the trade school, the female high school,
The Regional Museum, and The Royal Teachers Seminary. It also had its own printing
house.
The town was also the home of famous German artists such as the last German
emperor’s court painter- Ludwig Noster, the artist Reinhold Bresler, the painter and
graphic artist Anton Bartz, or the sculptor Max Dennert. All the above mentioned artists
have left great works to remember them by.
Sadly, the legacy was thwarted by the Second World War and the short period afterwards. The town was vastly damaged as 80 percent of its buildings were destroyed.
The monuments of Strzelce- the town’s historical route
T
he town’s most interesting monument are definitely the huge defensive walls. The
were built between 1272 and 1290 with the use of boulders, lime mortar and birds’
eggs. They are 1640 m long, one meter thick and 8 meters high in their best preserved
parts and surround the area of 24 hectares of „The Old Town”. Along the walls there were
38 rectangular watching towers (36 survived), 2 town gates-the Gorzowska Gate and the
Młyńska Gate, and the Prison Keep also called the Witches’ Tower (14th century) as
integral parts of the walls built of erratic blocks and brick.
Equally interesting is the well preseved, Gothic-style, Mill’s Gate also called Drezdenecka or Eastern Gate which dates back from the 15th century. It is a four-floored building made of brick with an arched pass. From the outer side the gate is equipped with
a high niche covering a runner for lowering the so called harrow. Other worth seeing
elements of the gate are a well preserved latrine bay window and an open-work decorated top of the gate. Another monumental building is the centrally located Gothic basilica
erected in the 1290s. The interior of the church were primarily covered with a flat ceiling
but after a fire in 1433 (the Hussites invasion) it was star-shaped in the second half of the
15th century. Another renovation took place in the late 1800s. The Second World War left
the temple totally ruined and burnt. It was re-erected in 1973 by the means of worshippers and former residents of Friedeberg.
The other important monument is the Neo-Renaissance town hall located along the
market built in the second half of the 19th century.
Next to the Młyńska Gate, there is a brick granary which dates from 1746. Now,
there is a stylish restaurant inside called „The Royal Granary”.
A building worth mentioning is the former water pressure control tower built in the
shape of a cylinder narrowing to the top, covered by a pyramid helmet, which is now the
seat of the Łemek Culture Center- „Lemko Tower”. The tower was built in 1929.
Culture and education
T
he contemporary Strzelce Krajeńskie is a busy town, teeming with the lives of the
youngest, native residents. There are numerous educational institutions working
here again after the town has been rebuilt from the destruction of war: a day nursery, kindergartens, a primary school, a grammar school, the Comprehensive Education
School Complex, the Persistent Education Center, the Special Education Center, the
Voluntary Job Training Center, the State Music School of the 1st level, the Branch
of the Szczecin Academy of Agriculture in Strzelce Krajeńskie, and The Branch of
Gorzów 3rd Age University.
The town’s cultural activities are executed by the Communal Culture Center with
its library, a private art gallery „Zielona”, and three societies: The Strzelce Krajeńskie
Cultural Society, the Choral Society ‘Gaudium’, and the Łemek Culture Center.
For a few dozens of years the Comunal Culture Center has been the main organizer
of cultural activities. The Center provides the residents with numerous interest’s sections
to enable realizing their passions.
Moreover, it is also the organizer of many artistic events such as New Year’s Eve
concerts, Strzelce fairs, jazz workshops, declamation contests, children’s theaters review,
open-air photography meetings, youth music and poetry meetings, bridge and chess
tournaments, rock bands concerts, photography and plastic arts exhibitions, and many
occasional and jubilee events.
Similar forms of activities are lead by the Łemek Culture Center-„Lemko Tower”,
associating the ethnic minority of Łemek. The society works both with children, youth
and adults organizing the series of Evenings of Łemek Culture, music feasts, bonfires
and common concerts of Polish and Orthodox Church choirs.
The Cultural Center associates: The choir „Cantus Decus”, the Folk Dance Group
and Band „Krajna” and youth rock bands.
Cultural events are also organized by the State Music School, which is the home
of the Music Society. Regular concerts of the Poznań Philharmony take place in there.
Moreover the school educates a choir, and a chamber orchestra. Their own choirs have
also the Strzelce Krajeńskie Cultural Society- The Choir „Gaudium”.
The following tallented amateur and professional artists create their works in the
area of the commune: Maria Wolak-Paszkiewicz, Maria Rachlewicz, Marzena Wojtysiak, Jan Prokop, Grzegorz Karkoszka, Henryk Stuchly, Henryk Grudzień, Stefan
Szymoniak and Mirosław Parzych. Their pieces of arts are presented nationwide and
abroad.
The leading cultural events in the area has recently been the Shanties Festival
„Keja”. It is held on the first Saturday of August in the commune’s most beautiful tourist
spot- Długie. The festival takes place on the region’s largest (3 hectares) sandy beach in
the Tourist and Holiday Center on the Lake Lipie. The festival is one of the most important events of its kind in Poland. Another key event taking place here is the „Strzelce
Fair” which looks to antique markets and fairs. In the Old Town Square craftsmanship
exhibitions, knight’s tournaments, music group presentations and contests for the best
medieval times outfits are organized.

Sport and tourism
S
port and tourism have been important fields of the social life and the commune’s
promotion for many years. The tasks and aims connected with the development of
these domains are realized in numerous structures by qualified staff. It is here, in the
Strzelce Krajeńskie branch of LKS „Lubusz”, where talented athletes have been taking
their taking their first steps such as Paweł Czapiewski who is an 800 m race Olympics
contestant, a European Champion and a world Championship medalist.
The town has also been famous for the success of its disabled athletes, especially
Daniel Woźniak (European and World Championship medalist, three times Olympian,
silver medalist in Sydney Paralympics). The athletes from Strzelce Krajeńskie have been
members of national and olympic teams.
Our footballers, basketballers, gymnasts, boxers, and table tennis players were also
successful in the past.
But the most popular sport in our town is cycling. The club LKS „POM” has had
such excellent cross-country cyclists as Edward Piech, Dariusz and Mariusz Gil brothersWorld Championship medalists.
Football is almost equally popular. The discipline has the Town Sport Club „Łucznik” and village football clubs grouped in the LZS organization.
Recreational sport activity has been led for a dozen or so years’ time by the „Ratajada-youth against addictions” Society, the Strzelce Cycling Club, The Youth Sailing Club
„Szkwał”.
Local schools and Students’ Sport Clubs led by them are also organizers of the sport
activity. Football, basketball and athletics are the most popular disciplines.
Local authorities in co-operation with clubs and non-government organizations organize numerous highest rank events. There are LZS Polish Championship cross-country races, MTB Polish Championship, Polish Youth Olympics cross-country races organized in Długie. What is more, there are Polish Championships and other cycling events
organized in the town.
The district of Strzelce Krajeńskie is a perfect place for tourism. Its diversified topographic features, lakes, and vast forests attract many water, hiking, and silence lovers.
Other tourist attractions are walking, cycling, and canoeing routes running through
the region’s most interesting areas including nature reserves.
Mass tourism is developing especially in Długie where the Tourist and Holiday
Center on the charming Lake Lipie (182 ha) is located. The spot offers a campground, the „Wodnik” hotel, and the Sports-Educational Center managed by the Friar
Krystyn’s Gorzowskie Society of Neighbor’s Help. In season many shops, bars, small
gastronomy premises, and tourist equipment rental shops are open here. Along the shore
there the tourist will find the Youth Sailing Club „Szkwał”, the Tourism Center „Cadet”
and the Scuba Diving Center „Marlin Plus”.
Lake Lipie in Długie is canoers and yachtsmen’s paradise. It is the beginning of the
water route called „Lubuskie Masuria”- the unit of Lake Słowa, Lake Lipie- „Destination Baltic”. The route is a few dozens of kilometers long and leads from Lake Lipie,
Lake Słowa, through Lake Osiek covering an area of 630 hectares, and further on to
Drawa River.
Danków is a village located in theo Gorzów Forest. It is a place that hunters, anglers
and mushroom- picking lovers especially enjoy. One can stay overnight at a private campground or two agri-tourist farms. Such farms are also available in Buszów.
„Łucznik” and „Staropolski” are the two hotels which offer their services the town’s
visitors.
Foreign co-operation
T
he commune of Strzelce Krajeńskie as well as its institutions co-operate regularly in
various fields and domains what has a positive affect on the process of integration.
Partner contacts on the basis of official agreements have been maintained with the
commune of Jammerbugt, Denmark and two German towns: Tornesch and Angermu-
ende. Also, our „Little Homeland” connects the present and the former town and region’s
residents. Together with the members of the Former Friedeberg District Residents Society, Haus Brandenburg Society and other organizations both the authorities of Strzelce
and the commune’s institutions have executed numerous projects on the fields of sport,
culture, tourism, and education.
Economy
T
he comprehesive and dynamic development of the community is the highest
priority with the Town Council Comitee’s „Community Development Strategy”.
It assumes changing the community’s character from typically agricultural into an agriculturally- industrial one.
Coming into existence, the area’s industrial plants are mainly of light industry profile.
Strzelce has been a town worth investing for many years, what was noticed by Belgian, Danish and German investors whose capital have already strenghtened our enterprises. Some new ventures, mostly of shoe and metallurgical industries have been established the owners or shareholdes of which come from Western Europe. These plants are:
„JACO”- shoe industry, „SPARTHERM”, „ROFIX”, „ae group”- metallurgy.
Apart from the above mentioned companies, the biggest plants in the area are:
PPHU „POM” Ltd., SSPS „ŚWIT”, and Drzymałowo Orcharding Plant.
The commune’s authorities declare their openness to any offers and proposals concerning of the possible investors offering them a wide range of exemptions and allowances connected with their ventures. The commune administers free areas which may be
used for both industrial and tourist purposes.
THE MOST INTERESTING PLACES OF THE COMMUNE OF STRZELCE KRAJEŃSKIE
BRZOZA
It is an old, suburban village located in the outskirts of the Gorzów Forest established
on the place of the former Slavic settlement in the13th century. There is an Early Gothic
church built of granite stones. The building was converted in 1751 by enlarging the window holes and adding a tower with a baroque helmet in its western part ( an Orthodox
church at present). Another valuable monument is the manor buildings from the 17th
century. They consist of a granary which dates from 1717, houses for farm workers, the
manor’s manager’s annex and a scenic park from the 19th century. There are numerous
glacial lakes and ponds.
BOBRÓWKO
Bobrówko is a large village situated in the northeastern part of the commune. It originates from the medieval times and it was was established by two German nights: Nicolas v. Sack and Hennig v. Gadow. The village’s present distorted urban layout comes
from the 18th century.
The most important monuments are: an ecclectic palace and a brick church, both
from the 19th century. The church’s interiors present an altar with a bas-relief of the
„Last Supper”.
In the vicinity of the village ( by the local road to Machary) there is the region’s largest
stone ( 22- meter circumference).
DANKÓW
It is a summer-resort on the lakes Wielgie and Kinołęka by the Strzelce Kraj.-Barlinek
road. It was a private town connected with the castle of von Kietlitz family in medieval times. At the turn of the 16th century a large manor was built by the Papstein
family- the place’s new owners. The manor was extended in the 18th and the 19th century
by von Brand family.

There is a Neo-Gothic church dating from the 19th century, some remains of the manor’s
manager’s annex, and a park with a variety of old trees in the village.
The system of streets and some embankments and guardhouses’ remains still remind
about the place’s urban history.
According to what the legend says there is a hill with an old oak on the Lake Wielgie
that hides a treasure left by the Templars hundreds of years ago.
GARDZKO
It is a large village located on the Strzelce- Stare Kurowo district road. In early medieval
times (7th-10th century) it was a major Slavic highland settlement. The village has a
very interesting urban layout which has been constantly re-shaped. Its oldest part has a
hill with a Neo-Roman church from the 19th century. There are two monumental tombstones with sculptures made of sandstone commemorating the former owners of the
village. There are two bells on the church’s belfry, the bigger of which dates from 1516.
There are some examples of the „bamber buildings” from the 19th century. Henryk
Grudzień, a sculptor, is one of the residents of the village. His extraordinary yard is decorated with wooden statues and wooden birds painted and placed in the trees.
LUBICZ
Lubicz is a medieval village established by a knight called Blomke. It was a large manor
in the 18th and the 19th century. Unfortunately, only the park survived up to the present
times. The most valuable monument is a picturesque Gothic church. Its walls are equipped with a number of shooting slots and the elevation is decorated with ceramic tiles
which depict lilies.
The interiors’ explorations have recently revealed a medieval and an 18th-century polichromy which have been partly restored. There are numerous examples of „bamber
buildings” with elevations made of cracked stones.
OGARDY
It is an old village established on the place of Slavic settlements. There is a tiny EarlyGothic church built of granite blocks in the center of the village. There is a sharp-arch
portal (hidden) in the northern part of the elevation.

Another interesting monument is the country manor system represented by: the manor,
the palace, the manor buildings and the scenic park’s remains.
In the vicinity of the village there is a settlement called „Ogardzki Młyn”. It is a former
windmill- the home of forest workers at present. Surrounding forests are full of mushrooms and blueberries.
SOKÓLSKO
It is a village located on the Strzelce Krajeńskie-Choszczno road. There is a brick church
from the 18th century with an interesting equipment (a pulpit altar from the 18th century, stained glass windows from the 19th century) and the 18th century manor with
some manor buildings remains.
There is a giant oak of 6 m interference next to the manor.
TUCZNO
It is an old village which dates from the13th century. There is a late-baroque palace (rebuilt after a fire in the 1960s) with a well preserved mirror chamber. There is a manor
manager’s annex near the palace (19th century) used as a luxurious guest-house by its
present owners.The local sculptor Stefan Szymoniak lives in a house in the central point
of the village. His house is decorated with wooden sculptures.
Tourist routes and cycling tracks
T
ourists visiting our region are offered numerous tourist routes and cycling tracks
leading through the area’s most attractive and picturesque nooks of the land of
Strzelce.
The yellow route (cycling and hiking)
The 27km-long route leads from Górki Noteckie to the burnt Bridge on the Lake
Ogardzka Odnoga. It leads through the Gorzów and Drawa Forests, crosses the picturesque valleys of the Pełcz and Sarbina Rivers, then passes through Strzelce- the region’s
capital. Later it moves east to Licheń and reaches the complex of large glacial lakes: Lake
Brodzisz, Lake Słowa and the Lake Osiek (630 hectares), and Ogardzka Odnoga where
it comes to an end. It is possible for the tourists to divide the tour along the track into
two stages and to stay overnight in Strzelce Krajeńskie.
The blue route (cycling and hiking)
The 18km-long route is called „Down the trail of the lakes of Strzelce”. It runs from
the remains of the burnt bridge on the Lake Ogardzka Odnoga to Strzelce Krajeńskie.
Tourists can admire mighty pine-trees of the Drawa Forest and the blue-green lakes
among them Lake Słowa and Lake Lipie (182ha). After visiting Długie one moves towards west along the forest and field paths to Strzelce Krajeńskie. Passing Lake Rydzek
one goes along forest and field paths to Strzelce Krajeńskie. From Długie, the route covers with part of a district cycling route.
The red route (hiking)
Santoczno-Brzoza-Strzelce Kraj.-Stare Kurowo
The 20km-long route leads through the Gorzów and Drawa Forests. Its first stage goes
across the swift Przyłęg and Pełcz Rivers and continues among the trees of the valley
of the Młynówka River in its second stage. Then it climbs up the slopes of moraine hills
from 80 to 100 m above the sea level.

„The Danków Route” cycling track length-14.5km
It begins at Cmentarna Street in Strzelce Krajeńskie, leads through Piastowo,
Wielisławice, the Gorzów Forest and ends up in Danków. The path is especially valuable due to its environmental richness. One may see game such as deers and roe deers
and many species of fowl like black and white storks, white-tailed eagles, cranes and

herons. There are numerous streams, ponds and lakes along the route. There are sheltered rest spots prepared for tourists.
„Down the trail of nature reserves” cycling and hiking track length-38km
The trail starts in Strzelce Krajeńskie at Gorzowska Street and runs through Piastowo,
Wielisławice to Wilanów. At this stage of the track, near Przyłęg, there are two nature reserves: „Wilanów” with its unique 160-year-old Pomeranian beech wood and
„Przyłężek” named after the beautifully winding river. From that point the track heads
towards Zdroisk, crosses the national Gorzów-Gdańsk road and runs along the shores
of Lake Wełmino. The next stage leads along the edge of the reserve „Buki Zdroiskie”
and follows the Santoczna River to Górki Noteckie. The last stage follows a forest track
from Międzymoście to Sławno and ends in Strzelce Krajeńskie.
Destination Długie length-28km
Its beginnings are in the town’s outskirts at Poznańska Street. This is the shortest and
safest way to get to the Tourist and Holiday Center in Długie (11km). At first the route
goes along the fields and after passing the resting spot on the „Staw Anioła” (Anioł’s
Pond) just for a moment it gets into the thicket of the Drawa Forest. After passing the
lakes Rydzek Głęboki and Rydzek Miałki the path crosses the national road 22 (near
Długie) and leads farther by the shores of the big, old lakes Słowa and Lipie. After
reaching its destination in Długie it turns back to Strzelce Krajeńskie in the area of the
„Stary Folwark”- (the old manor).
Destination Baltic- canoeing route- the unit of Lake Lipie and Lake Słowa
The beginning of the route is simultaneously the beginning of „Lubuskie Little Masuria” route. In the Tourist and Holiday Center in Długie where the route begins one
may take advantage of the accommodation and catering base as well as tourist equipment rental shops.
The route leads from the Lake Lipie through the pass to the Lake Słowa and along the
channel to the Lake Osiek. There it follows a creek Mierzęcka Struga to the Lake Wielgie Dobiegniewskie (length- 8km). It leads along the river again to Mierzęcin, then to
Drawa and Noteć rivers (length- 30km).
