0.0 - Start of Highway 101
Hwy 101 from Astoria to the California
state line is part of our national scenic
heritage. Mile 0 is the southern end of the
Astoria–Megler Bridge. Over 4 miles long,
this bridge is the longest continuous threespan, through-truss bridge in the world.
Construction began in 1962 and was completed in 1966. This bridge completed Hwy
101 and made it an unbroken link between
the Canadian and Mexican borders. The city
of Astoria lies mostly upriver from milepost 0.
Circle No. 148 on ad info card.
0.0 - Astoria (ZIP 97103)
The written history of the area dates
to 1792, when Robert Gray in his small
ship, Columbia Rediviva, entered and named
the river. Lewis and Clark’s expedition of
1804–1806 established the new nation’s
claim to the Pacific Northwest. The oldest
American settlement west of the Rockies,
Astoria offers more points of historical interest than any other city on the Oregon Coast.
Intriguing historical museums include Flavel
House (not wheelchair-accessible), Heritage
Museum, and Uppertown Firefighters
Museum.
Tapiola Park is Astoria’s newest attraction, with miniature replicas of the area’s
greatest sites and a state-of-the-art skateboard facility.
Another great view can be had from
the Sixth Street Viewing Platform along the
Riverfront Trail. The visitor information
center is on West Marine Drive, about 1/2
mile east of the Astoria–Megler bridge.

For a glimpse of life during the Lewis

on Old Hwy 101 to Fort Clatsop Road

major sites in the Lewis and Clark National
Historical Park. This is where the expedition spent the winter of 1805–1806. The

6.5 - Warrenton/Hammond
(ZIP 97146)
The visitor information center
(503-861-1031) sits at 143 S Hwy 101 at
the edge of Youngs Bay Shopping Center. A
model lighthouse sits in Lighthouse Park in
Warrenton. At the end of the road is Fort
Stevens, the United States’ major defense
for the mouth of the Columbia from the
Civil War until the end of World War II.
The fort’s military purpose has ended, but
the remains of the installation make a fascinating historical center. You can visit a
museum and tour the old batteries on foot
or in a vehicle. Old Fort Stevens is part of
Fort Stevens State Park. Camping here is
popular, and reservations should be made.
Enjoy miles of hiking and bicycle paths.
Start at either end: Fort Clatsop Visitor
Center or Sunset Beach. Trail climbs gently
from Fort Clatsop through woods, then it’s
easy going through pastures, highway tunnel, and dunes to beach. One-way trip
requires pickup at other end; shuttles available in summer months. (503-861-2471)
7.5 - South Access to Fort Stevens
9.9 - Camp Rilea
Camp Rilea was founded in 1927 as
Camp Clatsop. It was renamed Camp Rilea
in 1959 and is a military training camp for
police, the National Guard, and others.
11.5 - Sunset Beach SRS
Turn west on Sunset Beach Lane past
the Astoria Golf & Country Club (private)
to reach the park. Here is the west trailhead
to the Fort-to-Sea Trail connecting the site
of Fort Clatsop to the Pacific. A 300-foot,
ADA-accessible boardwalk leads to viewing
platforms at the beach.
13.5 - Cullaby Lake
Clatsop County maintains two day-use
parks on Cullaby Lake about 1/2-mile east
of Hwy 101. Carnahan Park has 30 acres
at the north end of the lake. Cullaby Lake
Park is the site of the historic Erik Lindgren
home. This 165-acre park has a boat ramp,
restrooms, picnic shelters, and barbecue pits.
16.9 - Del Rey Beach SRS
The road leads west to a large parking
lot with vehicle access to the beach. No restrooms. Motorized vehicles are allowed on
this stretch of ocean beach, extending about
10 miles between Gearhart and Warrenton.

19.2 - Gearhart
A northern “suburb” of Seaside, Gearhart
shares Seaside’s ZIP code, but has its own
shops, two golf courses and a pleasant residential neighborhood. City Hall, (503-7385501).
19.2 - Gearhart Necanicum Estuary
Turn west at light at Pacific Way, left
onto Cottage Way, right on F Street, left on
Wellington to parking lot at end. This tidal
estuary with active sand dunes is one of the
best places to see shorebirds during migration
in April and September.
20.0 - Seaside (ZIP 97138)
Seaside was Oregon’s first seashore
resort, and it remains one of the coast’s most
popular year-round destinations with many
visitor attractions. Visitors delight in dozens
of specialty shops, art galleries, antique stores,
sweet treats, and restaurants that surround
the downtown streets where Broadway leads
from Hwy 101 to the turnaround in the center of Seaside’s famous Promenade. There a
sculpture designates the end of the Lewis and
Clark Trail. Families enjoy the Carousel Mall,
sand biking, paddleboats, bumper cars and

28.0 - Cannon Beach (ZIP 97110)
Extending 4 miles along a stunning
stretch of beach, Cannon Beach offers a
breathtaking view around every corner.
The town (named for a cannon that
washed up on the beach in 1846) has
worked hard to preserve its natural beauty.
The city doesn’t specify materials, but many
people use shingle siding, making the buildings compatible with the character and setting of the city. The retail area is an impressive collection of smart shops, all tastefully
landscaped and some with tranquil courtyards—no obtrusive big-box stores here.
The most popular annual event in
Cannon Beach is the Sandcastle Contest,
scheduled each year in June. The town
celebrates music and art during the Stormy
Weather Arts Festival, the first full weekend
of November. And Haystack Holidays has
many activities including wreath-making,
and caroling.
30.5 - Cannon Beach South Access
Haystack Rock, part of Oregon Islands
National Wildlife Refuge and the unofficial
symbol of Cannon Beach, lies just south.
Haystack Rock is home to many species of
nesting birds. Between April and August,
tufted puffins abound. Do not disturb either

Mountain. Stories of buried treasure arose
more than two centuries ago when, according to legend, a badly crippled, treasurerich Spanish galleon strayed off course and
was wrecked on the beach. Native Indians
said the men from the “huge canoe” carried boxes from the wreck and buried them
at the foot of the mountain. No one has
ever found the treasure, but many artifacts,
including a wine cup and beeswax, have
been found.

55.6 - Garibaldi (ZIP 97118)
One of the early settlements in
Tillamook County, Garibaldi is named for
the Italian patriot considered the father of his
country. This town of 917 is one of the stops
on the Fun Run Express excursion train, and
offers a variety of activities for all ages. Busy
fisherman utilize Garibaldi’s harbor and the
Miami River. The Garibaldi Days Festival is
celebrated during the last full weekend in July.

There are two Cape Kiwanda parks.
Tillamook County Park  includes the parking lot and a wheelchair-accessible oceanviewing deck; Cape Kiwanda State Natural
Area contains the cape itself. The action of
wind and waves on the sandstone that forms
the cape has created an interesting headland,
beautiful to look at from the beach but dangerous to explore on foot.

During World War II, blimps patrolled
out of Tillamook to guard against enemy
submarines. According to the Guinness Book
of Records, the two hangars that housed
them were the largest wooden clear-span

in 1992; the remaining hangar can easily be seen from Hwy 101 and houses the
Tillamook Air Museum’s collection of historic airplanes. (503-842-1130;

For taking photos of the waves at Cape
Kiwanda, drive farther north on Cape
Kiwanda Drive. Continue past cape to stop
sign. Turn around and come back to small

best time is morning.
