The airguns used to teach new shooters are
very important to the learning experience. We
want them to be transparent to the pupil, yet
also as safe as possible. And safety is the most
important aspect.
No handguns
Unless there’s a compelling reason, it’s
unwise to use a handgun to teach a person to
shoot. A handgun is short and can be pointed in
any direction fast and easily—sometimes before
the teacher sees what’s happening. Since new
shooters are not considered safe or responsible
until they complete the training, don’t give them
a gun that isn’t safe by design. After the student
masters the fundamentals of safe gun handling,
it’s okay to move on to handguns.
Characteristics of a training rifle
Atrainingrifledoesn’thavetobepowerful.
Allthelessonscanbetaughtonarifleofrelatively
low power, which makes the training session that
much safer.
Therifleshouldberelativelylightand
easy to cock, and the intended pupil will help
determine that. Obviously, children should be
trainedonsmaller,lighterairriflesthanadults,
though even adults can be trained best with
lightweightairrifles.
Thetrainingrifleneedstoberelatively
accurate—so the student can see progression
as the training advances. And always train with
adjustable open sights in the beginning so the
student learns the fundamentals of sighting.
Optical sights can be used after competency is
acquired, but a student needs to learn how to use
sights along with all the other fundamentals.
Avoidsightswithfiberopticsifyoucan,
because they’re less precise and lead to aiming
errors. A good square front post and a good
adjustable rear sight with a square notch are the
best sights for training.
The trigger doesn’t need to be a target
trigger,buttrytofindonethatreleasescrisply
and with not more than 5 lbs. weight. A twostage trigger is best for training, because it has
thefirststagefortake-upandthesecondstage
stands out as the trigger release. That teaches the
new shooter the tactile feel of the trigger, where
asingle-stagetriggerisdifficulttousewithany
finesse.
The pull length of the stock (distance
from the center of the buttpad to the trigger)
is important for new shooters. A longer pull is
usually more desirable for offhand shooting,
while a shorter pull works best when shooting off
a rest.
The bottom line
When teaching a new shooter, you want an
accuratepelletriflewithadjustableopensights,
agoodtriggerandstockthatfitsandtherifle
should be easy to cock.

gun at something you don’t want to shoot. Learn
that and all the other rules fall in line. There are
far fewer accidents when you know this rule. “I
didn’t know it was loaded” ceases to be an excuse.
Thisruleisoftenstatedas“Neverpointagun
in an unsafe direction.” But the way we’ve said
it here encompasses everything. If you follow
this rule, you’ll never use a mounted scope as
binoculars to watch other shooters.
The next cardinal rule for airgun safety is
that airguns are always considered to be loaded.
Even when they have no ammunition in them,
many airguns still have the potential to injure
and kill—something that cannot be said about
firearms.Airgunsthatusecompressedairorgas
like CO2 don’t just shoot pellets. They can also
shoot nails, pencils and ball bearings. Whatever’s
in the barrel when the compressed gas is released
will be shot out the muzzle at high velocity.
Keepyourfingersoffthetriggeruntilyou
intend shooting. This is such a cardinal rule
that magazines and shooting websites refuse to
publishphotoswhensomeone’sfingerappearsto
be on the trigger if the gun appears to be pointed
in an unsafe direction or if the shooter is not
looking in the same direction as the muzzle.
“Never point a gun in an
unsafe direction”
Consider what lies beyond your backstop.
Even a low-powered pellet gun can shoot through
a substantial backstop unless it’s made of steel.
After a few shots, no amount of plywood planks,
carpet material or phonebooks can keep a pellet
gun from shooting through it and going beyond
a backstop made from these materials. When
you shoot, your shots tend to land close together.
It takes only a couple shots to rip through thick
wood or stacked phonebooks. After that, the
pellet can go anywhere. This rule is sometimes
stated as “Be sure of your target.”
Always ask before handling an airgun that
doesn’t belong to you. And never cock a gun
unless you intend to shoot it right away. Many
airgunscannotbeuncockedandmustbefiredto
make them safe. Also, some airguns are valuable,
and handling can cause damage and unnecessary
wear.It’sbesttoaskfirst.
If you don’t know how something works, ask
before you do anything. Make no assumptions
that all guns are alike.
Nevertrustamechanicalsafety.Just
because the safety is on doesn’t mean you can
point the gun at something you don’t intend
shooting. Safeties can fail, but safe gun handling
never does.
Wear approved eye protection when
shooting. Steel BBs can bounce back over 30
feet with enough velocity to break the skin and
damage eyes. Everyone in the vicinity should
wear eye protection, and pets should be removed
from the area to avoid injury from ricocheting
ammo.
If someone acts unsafe with an airgun, either
stop them or leave the area immediately.
