WINE COUNTRY
AT ITS BEST
Breathtaking vistas overlook valleys and mountains studded with
ancient oaks, brilliant wild flowers and magnificent vineyards.
A leisurely country drive allows one to fully appreciate the
winemaking experience while viewing the ever changing
seasons. Pruning in the winter, bud break in spring, and canopy
management all summer, culminates with the fall harvest.
It is a wonderful discovery for any traveler! Pull up to one of
several towns and find great restaurants, galleries, country inns
and exceptional tasting rooms. Friendly and knowledgeable
people are waiting to welcome, serve and delight you.
To further enhance your visit, wine events are scheduled year
round, from festivals and winemaker’s dinners, to concerts, dramatic
readings and art shows, all of which are open to the public.

SIX UNIQUE
WINEGROWING
AREAS
SANTA YNEZ VALLEY
Santa Ynez Valley is a long, east-west corridor with very cool temperatures on the coast that become progressively warmer inland. Consequently,
several varietals do well from Pinot Noir in the west to Cabernet Sauvignon
and Merlot in the east. Several Rhône and Italian grape varietals have also
gained acclaim in this versatile appellation. The largest concentration of
wineries is in the Santa Ynez Valley appellation.
STA. RITA HILLS
Sta. Rita Hills is an AVA within the Santa Ynez Valley AVA. Located on the
far western end of the long corridor, the marine influence is directly off the
ocean providing an extremely cool climate. It is an optimal place to grow its
hallmark Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Though known as a scenic beachside resort, Santa Barbara
County also encompasses one of the top wine regions in the
world. The beaches are backed by an unusual mountain
configuration with an east-west orientation forming valleys that open
directly to the Pacific Ocean. It is the longest east-west traverse from
the Aleutian Islands to Tierra Del Fuego.
HAPPY CANYON OF SANTA BARBARA
This unique topography allows the inland flow of fog and ocean
breezes to shape one of the coolest winegrowing regions in
California and create an ideal environment for the cultivation of
classic grape varietals. The growing season here is considerably
longer than other wine producing areas, meaning the fruit has an
unusually long “hang time” on the vine. This makes for world class
wines of distinctive character.
BALLARD CANYON
Within Santa Barbara County there are six federally recognized
American Viticultural Areas (AVA): Santa Maria Valley, Santa
Ynez Valley, Sta. Rita Hills, Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara,
Ballard Canyon, and Los Olivos District.
Happy Canyon is a relatively new winegrowing region recently granted its
own AVA. Located in the far eastern edge of the Santa Ynez Valley AVA,
it delves into the San Rafael Mountains just northwest of Lake Cachuma.
Its inland position means a significantly warmer climate. This region is best
suited for growing Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sauvignon Blanc.
Ballard Canyon became the fifth official AVA of Santa Barbara County
on October 30th 2013. The 7,800 acre viticultural area’s soils and climate
is known for producing distinctive and unique wines, a preponderance of
which are Rhône varietals.
LOS OLIVOS DISTRICT
The Los Olivos District AVA, a broad alluvial terrace, between the Purisima
Hills above Solvang and the western flank of the Happy Canyon area, is
a unique geographical & geological feature distinguished by its relatively
uniform topography, geology, and soil profile. Boundaries encompass the
townships of Ballard, Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, and Solvang.
SANTA MARIA VALLEY
The often foggy and windswept Santa Maria Valley is the northern most
appellation in Santa Barbara County. The region’s first officially approved
American Viticultural Area (AVA) enjoys extremely complex soil conditions
and diverse microclimates. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are two varietals
which especially benefit from the ocean’s influence, and are the flagship
wines of this appellation.

TAKE IT EASY
( 1 ) Plan ahead. Map out a route, checking tasting room hours. The two wineries you’d most
like to visit may be 50 miles apart. You’ll also notice that some wineries house their tasting
rooms in our small towns while others have chosen retail wine bars and shops to be their official
tasting rooms, so your favorites may be right next door to each other. Whether its 50 miles
or 50 feet, remember: four or five wineries is still a full day. Most tasting rooms charge for
sampling wines.
( 2 ) There is usually something special happening in wine country year round.
Check the Association web site for a listing of events at
sbcountywines.com.
( 3 ) Please drive carefully and courteously.
The pace here is a little slower, so relax and enjoy the drive. It’s part of the experience. There’s
no telling when a covey of quail will dart across the road.
( 4 ) A designated driver is encouraged to ensure safety on the road. Over-imbibers will not be
served, even if you’re not driving. It’s the law.
There are many transportation companies throughout Santa Barbara Wine Country if you prefer
to leave the driving to someone else.
( 5 ) Gas up before you head out to the country.
It may be a long distance between service stations. With
that in mind, you may want to bring a picnic lunch. Most wineries do not serve food, but many
have beautiful picnic areas. There are also wonderful places to dine in town,
some with outdoor seating.
( 6 ) An overnight stay is always recommended. There are a lot of places to stay when you
visit Santa Barbara County – from hotels on the beach, to spa resorts in the countryside to
places in town.
