Pledge Of Allegiance
The Star Spangled Banner
Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed
at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars
thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched
were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night
that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
CANADA
O’ Canada
O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

President’s Message
Debora Curtis
DTM
District 10, District Governor 2013-2014
Welcome fellow Toastmasters to District 10’s Fall Conference of 2013.
The theme of this conference is Toastmasters: THE Social Media. This
is a timely theme. Toastmasters teaches us to enhance our interpersonal
communication skills while technology threatens to stunt our relationships.
One of the themes at the International Convention was that Toastmasters
needs to embrace digital media in order to reach all audiences. As Toastmasters, we need to understand the importance social media has in our
lives as well as the lives of those around us. Learning how to use social
media in conjunction with Toastmasters will give us the best results.
If you are like me - someone who barely checks Facebook and only looks
at LinkedIn when she gets an update - this conference is for you. I know the
conference chair, her committee and the presenters have worked hard to
provide a program worthy of your time. I want to thank them for their hard
work on the difficult task of providing this program for us to experience.

Director
Thank You
Welcome
Thanks to Judy Edwards, everything I’ve done was
with this question in mind: What will get me out of bed
on a November Saturday morning? I hope today’s conference provides the best possible answers. If you enjoyed
today, thank my team. If you don’t, blame me.
My thanks to:
Dave, my husband and personal librarian, and our
children, Raymond, Clara, Joanna, and Cecelia,
and my parents, Bob and Bobbie Drake.
Having you here today rocks my world.
Marsha and Rich Friedman, Terri Fullmer,
Jenilee Grabenhorst and Greg Loo: I wouldn’t be
here without you. In your friendship and mentorship
over the last three years, I am blessed.
My clubs: Stark Community Toastmasters,
Towpath Talkers, Toastmasters in Green:
Bless you all.
Debbie Curtis & Missy Moore: You’ll pay for this.
The committee chairs: My success is entirely due
to you. I hope I helped you a tenth of how much you
helped me.
Malone University: We’ve both grown up so muchI was 22, you were a college… No, really, Malone has
been a great host and I hope we’ll be back.
Bonnie Boyd: You’ve done an amazing job dealing
with the crazy conference chair. Thank you.
Welcome to District 10’s Fall Conference
where Toastmasters is THE original “social
media.”
Communication has changed over the years
and we can utilize each and every form, from
hand written to emails and texts, to verbal by
telephone or face to face, from social websites
such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube
or MySpace, but there is a much more powerful
social media that you can access and develop
and it doesn’t even require a computer or smart
phone. It is called Toastmasters.
Membership in Toastmasters now stands at
more than 290,000 strong, the highest level in
our 89 year history. We can be proud that our
organization, now represented in 122 countries
through more than 14,300 clubs, is recognized
globally as a leader in communication and
leadership skill development.
Members are and always will be the heart
of Toastmasters, with education and recognition
programs being the soul of the Toastmasters
experience. Even 89 years after Dr. Ralph
Smedley held the first Toastmasters meeting
in Santa Ana, California, the purpose of Toastmasters International remains unchanged:
We empower individuals to become more
effective communicators and leaders.
Dan Toussant: Thanks for letting me boss you
around and not making me call out the flying
monkeys.
Yours in Toastmasters,
Sue Woods: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
It’s a pleasure and privilege to work with such a
gifted friend.

District 10 History at a Glance
District 10 began with the formation of Akron Toastmasters Club #151. Lewis (Lew) Turner, while visiting California in the 1930s, heard of an organization that promoted
self-development and the “how-to” for more effective communication. He was so impressed after visiting the club of
our founder, Ralph Smedley, that he vowed to form a club
upon his return to Akron. He started the first Toastmasters
Club in Ohio, which was chartered in December 1939. It
became the 151st community in the world to welcome
Toastmasters.
The idea spread and by 1941 there were seven Toastmasters clubs in Ohio. Lew Turner then set in motion the
formation of the District in 1941 where a minimum of 10
clubs was required. In early 1942, we became the Tenth
District in the world to be formed and thus District 10.
Lew Turner was appointed by Dr. Smedley to serve as
District Governor until the first election was held in 1943.
Lewis Turner also felt strongly about women gaining the
same skills that men were receiving through Toastmasters.
He learned that Dr. Smedley had been instrumental in
forming an organization for women, the International
Toastmistress Club. Lewis Turner helped form the first
Toastmistress club east of the Mississippi in 1941, “The
Akron Club.” In 1973, Toastmasters club membership
was opened to women.
Turner’s interest in Toastmasters energized him to become an International Director in the 1940’s and ultimately
the 1949-50 International President. He is one of two
District 10 members to have served as International President. The other was T. Vincent (Vince) McIntire (1956-67).
There have been 11 other members from District 10 who
have gone on to become International Directors.
By 1953, there were 63 clubs in District 10 when the
clubs in southern Ohio petitioned for establishment of
another district. The new district started operating as
District 40 on July 1, 1953 with 39 of the clubs from District 10, leaving us with 24 clubs. By July 2003, District 10
set a new record of 100 clubs. There are currently 103 clubs
in the District.
District 10 hosted the 1969 International Convention at
the Sheraton-Cleveland Hotel, with Eldon Phillips as the
Chairman. In 1991, Nate Parries conducted the Memorial
Tribute at the International Convention in Atlanta

Watch Your

Advanced Manual
Panel and Workshop
What U.S. President’s body
language was misinterpreted to
mean disrespect to an entire continent? Are you saying one thing
but your actions convey something
different? Learn to check your
body language to make sure it’s
saying what you mean. When you
use signals from sports such as
“time out,” “touch down,” or
“We’re #1!” – you’ll be surprised to
find out what those gestures mean.
Sometimes Toastmasters can feel
overwhelmed when it comes to selecting an advanced manual. If you are
one of those people, this presentation
is for you!
There are challenges in the support of Toastmasters prison clubs,
but the benefits far outweigh them.
This informative presentation will
cover some of the benefits, such as
preparation for reentry into society,
including job interviewing, and
giving back to the community upon
release as effective leaders. Gavel
clubs, a Toastmasters program for
those who can’t afford membership,
or attend regular meetings, fill this
need in prisons and other places.
If you’re looking for an opportunity
to make a difference in your community, Debbie has stories to share
that will inspire you.
Debbie Stark currently serves
as Associate Dean for Business
and Information Technologies at
Marion Technical College, with
oversight of the college programs
in both Marion and North Central
Correctional Institutions. She recently served as Area Governor for
Area 30, which included oversight
of the 85-member Gavel Club inside three prisons. Debbie frequently speaks at and attends meetings
to share her passion for Toastmasters as an effective prison reentry
program.

Donna “Dahmia” Komidar,
DTM, has been a Toastmaster since
2004. She has held TM officer
positions at club and district levels.
She currently works in corporate
security and law enforcement
background.
Our panelists, Brenda Giguere,
Marilyn Burns, Joan Dilillo and
Judy Edwards will talk about each
of the 15 advanced manuals, and
some strategies for completing them.
You will have a chance to examine
all the manuals and talk to people
who have finished them.
The goal is to select the next three
manuals you would like to work on.
We will be having a drawing at
the end of the session to give away
some advanced manuals to some
lucky winners!
Sharon Brustoski is a tax accountant at Winer & Bevilacqua CPA, in

The requirement to sponsor, mentor
or coach a clubs sounds like it’s just
about Toastmasters. But this requirement for the Advanced Leadership
Silver develops skills that apply beyond
our clubs. These skills apply to many
leadership positions in our careers.
René Smith will facilitate a panel
discussion regarding the roles of club
coach, mentor and sponsor.
Are you DerTerMined to get that
award? An august panel has been gathered to share their successes, challenges and advice regarding these roles.
Panel members include Maureen
Bachman, Tony Green, Erick Jackson,
Pete Punwani, and Greg Green.
René Smith is a charter member
of The Bank Tellers Toastmasters Club

of about leadership development and
serving others. This year she serves
as the District’s Lieutenant Governor

leaders extends to teens and “tweens.”
She regularly facilitates the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program and
the Interpersonal Communications
Module for Teens throughout northeastern Ohio.
Many people wander through life
letting circumstances batter them
around, taking whatever crumbs come
their way. They might not realize that
not making a decision is actually a
choice. They are choosing not to choose
or to let someone else determine their
future. Your career is the sum of who
you are, what you want to do, and what
you have to offer, wrapped up in a
packet of your own creation. You
control your career by the decisions
you make or don’t make. Today we will consider a way to take
ownership for your career. Dan and
Katherine can help you to examine
what you dream and how to go for it.
Katherine Burik is an energetic and
creative leader with specific expertise in
strategic planning and coaching leadership teams to improve performance
and results. She coaches candidates
looking for jobs, and speaks frequently to groups about career development
and successful job search techniques.
Dan Toussant is a human resource
professional with over 20 years of
leadership experience, specializing in
management and professional recruiting. He speaks regularly to groups
about the job-seeking process, and
coaches professionals in interviewing
skills, resume preparation, and career
transition.
As anyone who knows her
would tell you, glitter follows
Jenilee everywhere she goes including her speeches. Some
would call it glitter, others might
call it spice, but every speech
needs that special something to
grab the audience. Jenilee will
help you set your speech above
the rest by helping you understand what needs to be emphasized and how to do just that. It’s
all about presentation skills!
Jenilee Grabenhorst, DTM, manages a local hotel by day, recently winning the Susan L.
Hamo Hospitality Person of the
Year Award for 2013. Jenilee has
been active in Toastmasters since
2007, mentoring over 15 members. In her spare time, she
performs on stage at local
community theaters.

Tool Time
Zombie Speeches
You’ve been given the tools for
speaking in the Competent Communicator manual, and yet don’t
yet feel you make a strong impact.
In this program, Sherry A. Watts
discusses the five keys for putting it
all together so you can wow your
audience. You will learn how to
focus your speeches so you bring
your ideas to life and captivate
your audiences. You will see
demonstrations of the good and the
bland. By the end of the program
you will know how to approach
your speech preparation so you put
your best foot forward.
Have you ever given a speech
where you felt like zombie – going
through the motions and reciting
the speech word for word? Many
Toastmasters have this issue when
they give a canned speech from the
Better Speaker, Successful Club,
and Leadership Excellence Series.
Speakers also have this problem
when they have to present the same
material multiple times to varying
audiences. Come and learn how to
make your speech into a new and
vibrant creation. This session will
focus on bringing to life the
“canned” and old, tired speeches.
Sherry A. Watts, DTM, works
with corporations and other organizations that want the benefits of
strong communications and collaboration. As a speaker, consultant
and coach, she inspires people to
present themselves powerfully and
enhance teamwork by positively
focusing their attention and
language. Sherry is a member of
Westside Advanced Toastmasters.
In November 2007, Maria Pajak
joined the DFAS-CL Toastmasters.
She is the Northern Division
Governor and Sergeant at Arms for
Westside Advanced Toastmasters.
She has held full terms as the
District 10 Treasurer and club VP
Education, VP Public Relations,
and Secretary.
Many join Toastmasters because
• their bosses told them to
• they need help for immediate
assignments or
• friends suggested it would help
their careers.
Those who stick with Toastmasters
and advance through the leadership
and communication program discover
that they gained more than just improving their speaking. They may have
started out in one career, but after
new Toastmasters skills, they have
discovered new careers.
Our panelists today have been in
those situations and will share their
journey to a new career opportunity
through enhanced skills. Panelists:
Jacci Adams, Terry Begue, CC and
Ron Finklestein, CTM.
Judy Edwards has worked on the
avionics software for the F-16, A-12,
and F-22 jets. After a stint at Loral as
director of software, she then moved
to Diebold. She now teaches math at
Stark State and computer science for
Kent State University - Stark Campus.
She volunteers as a SCORE counselor,
specializing in counseling small
businesses.
Judy is currently a member of
Canton Hall of Fame Advanced
Club, Stark Community, and Stark
State clubs. She has a DTM and a
number of CC, ACBs, ACSs, ACGs,
and CLs. She didn’t want to be bored.

Region Advisor Greetings
Vera Johnson
DTM
Greetings!
Welcome to YOUR Fall Conference!
Note that the “your” is emphasized as this con
ference is an opportunity for YOU to grow.
Toastmasters is a worldwide organization that helps you become a better
speaker and a better leader.
This Fall conference is an opportunity for YOU to improve in both these skills.
As with anything, “practice makes better.” There is an old story about Gary
Player, the professional golfer. He was hitting a ball out of a sand trap and made
a terrific shot. After he hit the shot a bystander commented, “Boy, I’ve never seen
anyone so lucky.” Player replied, “Yes, but the funny thing is I find that the harder
I practice, the luckier I get.” The Fall Conference will give you plenty of opportunities to listen to wonderful presenters and to “practice” speaking – in groups and
one-on-one. I hope you will use these opportunities and become luckier in speaking
with impact in the future.
Leadership is a more difficult challenge. Many people think that leaders must be
forceful – convince others to follow them and implement their ideas. But there is
another kind of leader too – the servant leader. The servant leader has the primary
objective of helping others achieve their goals and by so doing, inspire loyalty and
support. Former International President Gary Schmidt had a great story about how
Senator Mark Hatfield from Oregon took a few minutes to help Gary achieve
one of his personal objectives and that inspired Gary to provide him with over
15 YEARS of active loyalty and support. What a payback! A few minutes of effort
gained 15 years of support from Gary and anybody he could influence. During the
Fall Conference, look for an opportunity to help someone else achieve a personal
objective. If you succeed, you will most likely have earned the long term support
of that person and all those that person can influence.
And remember, HAVE FUN.
Best regards,
Vera Johnson

Watch Your
Body Language
How I know why you should listen!
Are you saying one thing but your body
language is conveying something different?
Learn to check your body language to make
sure it’s saying what you mean.
Are you intentionally using body language
taken from sports such as “time out”, touch
down” or “we’re #1” – you’ll be surprised to
find out what those gestures mean.
What US President’s body language was misinterpreted to mean disrespect to an entire continent?
Donna Komidar brings her over thirty years
experience in law enforcement and security to
the topic of “Watch Your Body Language.” She
is adept at scoping out persons-of-interest in
on-going investigations and knows that what your
body is saying and what you don’t realize it is
saying can get you into trouble.
Donna spent ten years in polygraph interacting
and transcribing for the East Cleveland police
department in addition to nine years in Republic
Steel’s Security Department and twelve years
at Corporate LTV International. She knows the
importance of awareness of body language
and gesture in different cultures. She is the
Administrative Secretary, Pulmonary Respiratory
Therapy at the Cleveland Clinic.
Donna “Dahmia Li’uli’ualoha” Komidar DTM
