And here I am - in this land: the land of my enchanting dreams - away from home; free to roam - living and loving every minute of my life. I can’t believe it! I am in Canada! In this wonderful land; seeing this place for the first time - through the eyes of a stranger. The streetcars, the trolley buses, the wide, clean streets, the beautiful well-laid-out parks, all fascinate me; like ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Living among these people, I quickly discover their perspective on life is equally strange. For example, I learnt that people who are not physically attractive are referred to as being homely. Now I find that so amusing because in my culture if you are not beautiful, you are simply said to be ugly -- behind your back of course. To this day, no one has ever told me what homely means, but I have figured it out all by myself. It means you should stay home all your life - and not come out! Again, one day I was sitting on my balcony, and I counted: “one, two, three, four, five, six”, big, black, shining, new cadillacs, driving down the street. In excitement I exclaimed; ‘My, that’s living!” My friend laughingly replied: “No, that’s dying; that’s a funeral you are looking at, going down the road.” In amazement I replied: “What a way to go!” Still in a state of both shock and euphoria, later that evening, I wrote home to my girl friend: “My darling, in Canada they even die in style.” Eventually I decided to calm down, act cool; lose my sense of excitement and fascination with this place and its people; be sober and dignified like everyone else. So I got myself a job. I liked it. My coworkers were nice people except for one problem. They would constantly say to me: “Peterson, you speak too fast; we don’t understand what you are saying”. To which I would reply with unnerving confidence: “Your problem is: You listen too slowly.” Well, one day the manager, obviously agitated and in a bad mood, demanded: “Peterson, why is it that you are always so happy, so carefree, so sociable, as if you have no cares in the world? I envy you. Why don’t you get married and be miserable like the rest of us?’ That very year I got married - and discovered he was right! I did get miserable like the rest of them. She was my first Canadian girl friend. She had an hourglass figure; and by the looks of her countenance, it was difficult to tell just how much time had passed. We both had a strange and wonderful relationship: She was strange and I was wonderful! The first time I was introduced to her father, he asked me if I could support a family. I assured him that I intended to support only his daughter; but that the rest of the family would have to look after themselves. After this initial shock, he regained his composure and we became good friends. Well, after a brief courtship, we got married; and that ended a beautiful relationship. I tell you: A man never knows what happiness is, until he is married. By then it’s too late. The first morning I asked her for a hot meal. She threw me a box of matches and said, “Here, light up your corn flakes!” I remember the minister said “for better’ or for worse,” but I didn’t realize it meant she couldn’t do better, and I couldn’t have done worse. Now my hitherto relatively carefree, and uneventful life had taken a dramatic turn for the worse. Lucy was her name and fighting was her game. It was during our first week of marriage. I came home from work didn’t like the food, - so l didn’t’ say anything. I just sat down on the sofa and turned on the TV. After a few moments, Lucy told me to throw out the garbage. I replied, with rising anger in my voice: “You cooked it, you throw it out yourself.” Ohoo whoofle! I soon discovered I made a terrible mistake. They say a woman may suffer in many ways, but never in silence, and neither did my Lucy. I didn’t see her for two weeks. And after that, I was able to see her a little bit out of my left eye. Let me tell you from personal experience: The man who boasts he is boss at home will also lie about other things. Don’t trust him! And the woman who said a man isn’t complete until he is married never bothered to tell you: and when he is married, he is finished. Shortly afterwards, we broke up. It was over religion. She worshipped money, and discovered I didn’t have any. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s many many years later today, but every time I hear the word homely, see a funeral or think of my once beloved Lucy, I chuckle to myself and experience those vague yet strangely familiar sensations of the time when I saw this land through “The Eyes of a Stranger”. 4 Social Meet: BOWLING NIGHT Toastmasters from Kingdom Speakers took an exception from their usual weekly meeting place at Global Kingdom Ministries on one evening when the church was not available to our Toastmasters club. On the evening of March 5, 2013 they met along with their guests for a social gathering at All Star Bowling, 2791 Eglinton Avenue East (Intersection of Eglinton & Danforth) in Scarborough to have a Bowling Night full of fun and entertainment. In the Toastmaster spirit, they played in 2 teams – Team Prez led by Adrian Desir and Team VP-‐Ed led by Prince Dalechuku – displaying their Toastmaster skills in the bowling alley. During the play, each player projected their unique style displaying the lessons learnt in their CC Project 5 “Your Body Speaks”. As they watched each other during the play, they projected their strong voice and displayed their “Vocal Variety” learnt in CC Project 6 by shouting encouraging words like “You Made It!”, “Yeh!!!”, “Wow! Great Job!!”. As social meetings don’t go without eating, thanks to Adrian and Odessa -‐ this evening was also full of tasty foods like chicken wings, potato wedges, chicken strips to fill the stomachs of the players and their supporters. At the end of the game, the evaluation session began, as Charlene and Ernest displayed their evaluation skills by saying what went well and also giving some improvement tips that the players could take away with. Finally Prince Dalechuku awarded the 3 prizes, and the winners were Charlene Johnson, Marie Johnson and Mike Parker, our welcomed guest. Overall it was an evening full of fun and enjoyment that everybody who attended would have a fond memory for months and years. While everybody contributed to its success, Valeri Campbell researched the venues in the area leading to the selection of All Star Bowling as our venue, Odessa arranged the food, Adrian took the tab for all the expenses, Joyce took the pictures of the event and Parames acted as the Event Chair to co-‐ordinate the activities for this special event.
