2015–2016
Dear Friends of Maternal and Family Health Services:
I am proud to present to you this copy of the Maternal and Family Health Services (MFHS) 2015 Annual Report.
Celebrating 45 years of success, the health and nutrition programs MFHS launched in Northeast
Pennsylvania more than four decades ago are as important and meaningful as ever, and we are proud to
acknowledge they continue to positively impact our communities. With a laser sharp focus on our mission,
MFHS has expanded service lines over the years that enhance our systems of prevention.
Collaboration is one of the keys to the success of Maternal and Family Health Services. We have developed
and enhanced partnerships with state and federal agencies, private foundations, non-profit organizations,
social service providers, colleges /universities, and the medical community. As friends and supporters of
our mission, I think you will agree: We are stronger working together to achieve our shared goals... building
stronger, healthier communities.
Over the past year we focused our efforts on several key projects, each of which will have a lasting impact in
the communities we serve. For example, we have co-located our services with community health centers or
similar organizations, developed co-funding opportunities, and launched several new programs.
On behalf of the entire MFHS staff and our Board of Directors, I offer my heartfelt gratitude for your support,
which enables us to fulfill our mission to help tens of thousands of women, infants, children and families in
our 16-county service area.
Importantly, we are proud to acknowledge the benefactors, donors, community partners and friends who
have graciously contributed their time, talents and resources to preserving the MFHS mission. I look forward to working with you as we continue to seek new ways to add value to the communities we
serve, with the ultimate goal of strengthening the MFHS tradition of caring, service and excellence. Sincerely,
Board of Directors
The MFHS Board of Directors is the governing body responsible

Wic nutrition
The WIC Nutrition Program helps improve the lives of at-risk women and their families
in 16 Pennsylvania counties by promoting good nutrition habits. Through nutrition
counseling, vouchers for healthy food and breastfeeding support, we are fostering
healthier pregnancies, healthier birth outcomes, better growth and development of
young children and a reduction in childhood obesity.
PA WIC is funded by USDA. This institution is an equal opportunity provider.
• Over $41.2 million in annual gross sales were generated from
redeemed WIC checks at 467 stores.
breastfeeding Peer counseling
We are improving breastfeeding rates by pairing new moms with peers to provide
education and support. With the help of mothers who have breastfed for at least 6
months, new moms are shown how valuable breastfeeding can be to them and their
baby’s health, nutrition and emotional state.
Pediatrics
MFHS Pediatrics puts health coverage within reach for many working families.
Through the Early and Periodic Screening Diagnostics and Treatment (EPSDT) Program
and our partnership with Dr. Linda Thomas and the Wright Center for Primary Care, we
are able to offer free well-child check-ups that include all basic but necessary exams
and immunizations.
• 233children scheduled well-visits in 2015.
healthy habits together
With funding from the Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation and ongoing
support from The Robert Y. Moffat Family Trust, we are able to help at-risk children and
teens build a lifetime of healthy nutrition habits. Through one-on-one comprehensive
nutrition counseling and a support-system for making informed food
choices and increasing physical activity, we are working
to help a generation of children and teens avoid
obesity-related health complications.
•57.30% of new mothers enrolled in MFHS WIC breastfed for an
average of 14.3 weeks in 2015.
56,544 women,
infants and children were
provided WIC services at
32 centers throughout

Champions for Coverage
In the last year, we have worked to help more people than ever access affordable,
quality care through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace. With the help and
funding from National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association, we have
expanded enrollment opportunities, built partnerships and raised awareness about
health insurance options.
• Over 14,300 people were provided information about their
healthcare insurance options.
•285 un- and under- insured people met with our Certified
Application Counselors to discuss insurance options.
safeteens
With the introduction of SafeTeens Answers! in 2015, adolescents across
Pennsylvania can now message real health educators and get their reproductive
health questions answered – all over text. As Pennsylvania’s first statewide teen
health textline, SafeTeens Answers! amplifies the work of Maternal and Family Health
Services’ thirteen-year-old adolescent health website, SafeTeens.org. Together, the
website and textline provide young people across the commonwealth with the
knowledge and resources they need to take charge of their health and prevent
unplanned pregnancies – on the engaging, innovative platforms they use the most. • Our health educators responded to 1,124 questions
receivedfromPennsylvaniaadolescentsin2015.

Title X health centers, which collectively avoid over 13,200
unexpected pregnancies each year.
nurse-family partnership
The MFHS Nurse-Family Partnership empowers first-time mothers to develop critical
parenting skills and knowledge through the guidance and support of highly trained
nurse home-visitors. With funding from Pennsylvania Office of Child Development
and Early Learning, we partner at-risk moms, many of whom are teens, with visiting
nurses who provide health, planning and goal-setting education. Through this
program, first-time mothers and fathers are able to learn how to build healthy
families for a lifetime of health and economic self-sufficiency.

Early detection is key to surviving breast and cervical cancer. Our cancer screening
services provide free life-saving preventative screenings and diagnostic care for
breast and cervical cancer at its earliest stages. Through public and private funding
sources, including the Pennsylvania Department of Health HealthyWoman Program
and Susan G. Komen for the Cure (Northeastern and Twin Tiers affiliates); we leverage
resources to ensure all Northeastern Pennsylvania women can access the cancer
screening care they need.
• After 145 breast biopsies, 27 women with breast cancer
were diagnosed and referred for treatment.
769 underinsured women
received 556 mammograms
and 165 ultrasounds.

Year end June 30, 2015
MFHS values its donors enormously and stewards contributions prudently.
Without the investments in our mission received in 2015 from individuals,
businesses, private foundations, public funding, and workplace-giving
campaigns, all of the accomplishments cited in this annual report could not have
been realized. As a private non-profit, every grant, sponsorship and individual
gift provides financial support to help us achieve the goals of our mission.

In an effort to maintain ease of access for our clients, MFHS
was busy relocating (and co-locating!) several of our centers in
2015. Circle of Care Scranton and Pottstown WIC both moved,
co-locating with The Wright Center and Community Cares,
respectively. The Norristown WIC Center relocated into a human
and social service hub in downtown Norristown. MFHS will
continue exploring innovative service delivery models, including
co-location opportunities with other health and social service
providers to improve access for children and families.

Reaching New Audiences with Nexstar
Recognizing the United Way of Wyoming Valley
Strengthening Ties with Head Start
Nexstar Broadcasting, parent company of local tv
stations WBRE and WYOU, became an invaluable partner
in spreading the word about our mission. Nexstar, in
partnership with Tom Musto Productions, helped develop
the MFHS “Season of Giving” ad campaign that was aired
throughout the holiday season. In addition, our WIC
Nutritionists are now regulars in the kitchen on PA Live,
cooking up healthy and delicious meals.
MFHS joined The United Way of Wyoming Valley for a
fundraising luncheon to thank them for their support of
our Nurse-Family Partnership. Their dedication to reduce
childhood poverty through a focus on education, income
and health is a perfect match for the MFHS Nurse-Family
Partnership program. MFHS is proud to work with the United
Way on making lasting change by reducing poverty among
children and their families in our community.
MFHS set up a satellite WIC center at the Luzerne County
Head Start facility in Wilkes-Barre. This WIC-on-the-Go
service model helps Head Start families participate in WIC by
offering greater access and convenience. Wyoming County
Early Head Start also shares space with our WIC center in
Tunkhannock. With the success of this co-location, we will be
moving to a larger office in 2016. The WIC-On-The-Go model
will allow MFHS to improve access to WIC by opening satellite
WIC operations in locations where families are already served
by other community program.
Expanding Services with New Funding
In 2015, MFHS was awarded several new public / private
funding opportunities to expand existing programs and
launch new services. The United Way of Wyoming Valley,
the Robert Y. Moffat Family Charitable Trust, the Personal
Responsibility Education Program, the Get Covered: Family
Planning project of NFPRHA, the Lalor Foundation, the
Health Resource Center program, and the Northeast PA
Healthcare Foundation all awarded grants to MFHS in 2015.
Thank you to all of our funders for your support!
MFHS Welcomes New Board Members
Rep. Karen Boback goes on NFP home visit
Texting for Health: SafeTeens Answers!
Former state representative and MFHS Board Member
Phyllis Mundy accompanied State Representative Karen
Bobeck on a home visit with our Nurse-Family Partnership
nurse Mollie McHale. They met MFHS client Michele and
son Kaleb and observed a NFP home visit first hand, seeing
the impact the program has on first-time mothers.
MFHS launched SafeTeens Answers! with an $18,000 grant from
the Lalor Foundation. This innovative service enables teens across
Pennsylvania to now get personalized answers on health and
relationships from real health educators.
62440_MFHS 2015 Annual Report_2.indd 10
MFHS welcomed two new board members at the 2015 Annual
Meeting Community Luncheon. The Hon. Lesa Gelb and Debra
Lefkowitz bring professional expertise and a passion for helping
our community to their new roles on our board of directors.
