Dear Friends,
Each year, Maternal and Family Health Services impacts the lives of thousands of individuals in need throughout
Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Whether we are delivering vital services in the home, conducting health prevention education in the schools, providing
clinical reproductive health services or educating families on the importance of good nutrition, our work is grounded in the
best scientific and clinical practices available.
Maternal and Family Health Services supports a diverse network of community health providers throughout 16 counties
in Northeast Pennsylvania. Collectively, our services have provided a safety net for low-income residents for well over four
decades, and our clients and patients are confident that they can trust and count on us for high-quality care.
Bette Cox Saxton
President & ceo
Our network is highly regarded for the services it provides to individuals and families, including:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Reproductive health centers that serve women seeking birth control;
Programs that provide obesity prevention, nutritional counseling and food vouchers to women and children;
Services that help young children get evaluations and care for developmental delays;
Home-visiting programs to help new mothers and fathers with parenting skills;
Teen-focused pregnancy and disease prevention services and health education;
Outreach efforts that find those without health insurance and ensure that they become enrolled in a care plan.
In addition, we directly operate 28 Women, Infant and Children (WIC) nutrition centers and four reproductive health centers
in high-need areas, as well as operate maternity care in Scranton.
Last year we reached and impacted the quality of life of more than 110,000 women, children and families through our network
of partners and direct services.
The instrumental role that MFHS plays in the lives of families every day often gets obscured by the political discussions of budgets,
agendas and caseloads; however, when you meet the people who benefit from our programs and talk to our staff in the field, you can
easily relate to the remarkable effect we have on those we are so privileged to serve.
maggie r. koeHler

In this ever changing and increasingly challenging environment, one thing remains constant: At Maternal and Family Health Services, we

so positively impacted — and will continue to impact — the lives of so many in need.
Sincerely,

Women, infants and children
(Wic) nutrition Program
We provide the WIC Nutrition Program to help high-risk women in 16
Pennsylvania counties build good nutrition habits for themselves and
their families. Through nutrition counseling, vouchers for healthy foods
and breastfeeding support, we are fostering healthier pregnancies,
healthier birth outcomes, better growth and development of young
children, and a reduction in childhood obesity.
56,995 women, infants, and children served
each month through our 31 WIC centers in 16
Pennsylvania Counties.
We serve nearly 25% of all babies and children
on WIC in Pennsylvania, improving their diets,
cognitive development, and anemia rates.

478 stores in our service area generate $44.7 million
in annual gross sales from redeemed WIC checks.
WIC is a program for pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants and children up to age 5.

local moms who have successfully breastfed for at least six months. The
education, support, and role-modeling our peer counselors provide help
new moms and their babies access the many health, nutritional, and
emotional benefits of breastfeeding — and, in 2014, have helped MFHS
WIC achieve the highest rates of breastfeeding in our history.
56.8% of new mothers enrolled in MFHS WIC

Pediatrics
Our Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostics and Treatment (EPSDT) Program puts
health coverage within reach for many working families. Through EPSDT and our
partnership with Dr. Linda Thomas and The Wright Center for Primary Care, we’re
improving health of low-income, Scranton-area children and adolescents with
preventative and comprehensive pediatric care.

healthy haBits together
We’re helping at-risk children and teens build a lifetime of
healthy nutrition habits with one of our newest programs,
Healthy Habits Together. Thanks to start-up funding from the
Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Care Foundation and
continued support from The Robert Y. Moffat Family Trust, this
program provides Scranton-area children and teens with one-onone comprehensive nutrition counseling and a support-system
for making informed food choices and increasing physical activity
— ultimately, helping a generation of children and teens avoid
obesity-related health complications and lead healthy lives.
maternity care
Access to early and adequate prenatal care is vital to safeguarding the
health of both mother and baby. Partnering with Moses Taylor Hospital
Family Birthing Suites in Scranton, we provide low-income, pregnant
women with comprehensive obstetric and labor and delivery care, as well
as other medical, nutritional and psychological services. Through funding
sources such as Healthy Beginnings Plus, we strive to assist women achieve

reProductive health
cancer screening
We believe every woman, regardless of her age, insurance status, or ability to
pay, should be able to access quality reproductive healthcare. That’s why we
offer accessible, confidential family planning and related, preventive care across
15 Pennsylvania counties. Through Title X of Public Health Service Act, we
prioritize the needs of low-income and uninsured women, men and teens by
supporting health centers in medically underserved communities, offering free
care to those whose incomes fall below the federal poverty level, and offering
low-cost care to those whose incomes fall below 250% of the poverty level.
Early detection is key to surviving breast and cervical cancer. We provide
preventative cancer screenings to detect breast and cervical cancer at its
earliest stages, when treatment options are less costly and chances for
survival are greatest. Through vital public and private funding sources,
including The HealthyWoman Program and the Northeast and Twin Tiers
Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, we leverage resources to ensure
all Northeastern Pennsylvania women can access the cancer screening care
they need.
22,283 women in 15 counties were counseled
on their contraception options, avoiding 5,570
unplanned pregnancies.
3,194 women screened with Pap and HPV tests,
avoiding multiple cases of cervical cancer.
1,095 underinsured women received 912
mammograms and 260 ultrasounds
After 159 breast biopsies, 26 women with breast
cancer were diagnosed and referred for treatment.

Over $40 MillioN saved in maternal and birthrelated costs and public expenditures through MFHS
Reproductive Health.
In 2014, we began enrolling women, men and families in healthcare coverage,
helping more people than ever access affordable, quality care through the
Affordable Care Act marketplaces. By offering in-person enrollment help
with funding via the National Family Planning & Reproductive Health
Association, we’re reducing the number of uninsured in four high-need
counties, helping those who have long relied on MFHS preventive services to
access primary and emergency care.

safeteens
We power Pennsylvania’s teen health website, SafeTeens.org, to arm adolescents with the
knowledge they need to take charge of their health and prevent unplanned pregnancy.
By publishing fun, reliable teen health articles with a connection to over two hundred
Title X-funded health centers, we’re reducing unplanned teen pregnancy across the
Commonwealth by helping teens separate teen pregnancy fact from fiction and make
informed, healthy choices about their futures.
More than 78,000 teens logged onto SafeTeens.org in 2014,
getting connected to reliable health information and health centers.
In part, contributing to as many as 14,100 teen pregnancies
avoided through Title X-funded health centers statewide.

nurse-family PartnershiP
With the MFHS Nurse-Family Partnership, we help first-time moms in four high-need
counties create better lives for themselves and their children. With funding from the
Pennsylvania office of Child Development and Early learning, we partner at-risk moms,
many of whom are teens, with visiting nurses who provide health, parenting, and goalsetting education. Along the way, we’re alleviating the risks associated with unplanned
and teen pregnancy, helping young, local moms stay in school, achieve economic selfsufficiency, and raise healthy, happy babies.
304 at risk moms enrolled in 2014, each
making on average of $9,000 a year at
enrollment and 83% more likely to find
work by their child’s fourth birthday.
245 babies enrolled in 2014, each 48%
less likely to experience abuse or neglect,
50% less likely to have language delays,
and 67% less likely to have behavioral
and intellectual problems.

mfhs staff Win at out of the Blue
MFHS supported Lackawanna College’s Out of the Blue fundraising dinner.
Inspired by the success of other spontaneous cultural events, the Out of
the Blue Dinner aimed to capture the creativity and spirit of the Northeast
Pennsylvania community. MFHS staff developed a décor theme for their table
and won the contest for best tablescape.
Wic turns 40!
Maternal and Family Health Services was one of the first agencies in
Pennsylvania to administer a WIC Program, and one of the first 100 WIC pilot
projects in the nation. In 1974, the WIC Program was serving a monthly
average of 634 participants in Luzerne County. Today, the MFHS WIC Program
serves over 57,000 participants each month in 16 counties.
Welcome six neW Board memBers
MFHS welcomed six new members to our board of directors. New members
include Gina Bortz, Easter Seals of Eastern PA; Kathy Finsterbusch, Pennsylvania
Department of Health; Elizabeth Hattersley, retired community health nurse;
Phyllis Mundy, retired State Representative; Dr. Jill Murray, Lackawanna College;
and James Schilling, Marketing Consultant. They are looking forward to
bringing their expertise to the MFHS board.
nfP hosts record-Breaking holiday Party
MFHS staff joined with the community to help our NFP moms and their little
ones enjoy the holiday season at their annual party. Gifts for every baby and
mom-to-be were donated and families enjoyed dinner and pictures with
Santa. This year was the best attended holiday party that the NFP staff have
ever thrown.
safeteens.org traffic soars
2014 was another record breaking year for SafeTeens.org, with the number
of users continuing to climb. This growth was supported by an innovative
marketing campaign which included targeted advertising on Facebook and
Pandora online radio. The Pandora campaign far exceeded expectations and
helped push our numbers to new heights.

year end June 30, 2014
MFHS values its donors enormously and stewards contributions prudently. Without the investments in our mission
received in 2014 from individuals, businesses, private foundations, public funding, and workplace-giving campaigns,
all the accomplishments cited in this annual report could not have been realized. As a private non-profit organization,
every grant, sponsorship and individual gift provides the financial support to help us achieve the goals of our mission.
