Vice President’s Message
Hello to all GSW members:
The GSW held their board meeting on January 11th at 57
Regional Drive in Concord.
One of the subjects on the list was the annual Seacoast Century.
Bob Koehler and Dave Topham have decided to step down
from being coordinators for the Seacoast Century, but will
assist who ever takes over to coordinate this event. As of
February 2nd, an individual within the club membership was
found and more information will follow.
On the schedule will be the first GSW social for 2014, which is
being scheduled for March 10th at S&W Sports in Concord.
Brian the service manager will put together a maintenance talk
and the importance of it all. Rick the sales manager and Tim
Farmer will put together repair items that they can offer on that
evening at a deeper discount than usual.
The GSW social for April 14th will be at 57 Regional Drive in
Concord.
The popular Traffic skills 101 bike safety classes are back.
Classes have been scheduled for April 26 - 27 at Trek Bikes in
Portsmouth, and June 14 - 15 at 57 Regional Drive in Concord.
As always, email me or see me at next GSW social on ideas for
upcoming GSW Socials. Bring a friend that is interested in
bicycling and that might be interested in joining the GSW.
See you at the next GSW Social.

GSW Ride Leader Credit Guidelines
9. In the event of a scheduled ride having no one attend except the ride
leader, that ride will not be allowed mileage or ride leader credits. A minimum of two people (the ride leader plus one other rider) are required to allow credits. One person riding alone is not considered a club ride but rather
is a fun or personal ride. Options include rescheduling the ride to a time
and place for better attendance or else eliminating the ride from the schedule due to a lack of interest by the club membership or guest riders.
The above clarification was reviewed and approved by the GSW Board of
Directors on February 19, 2011. If there are any questions, please contact
the GSW President.
Note: Mileage may be submitted by mail or email and must be received
by the first of every even-numbered month to appear in the next issue of
Pedal Talk.
Road and Tandem Mileage are recorded separately. If a “T” is added
along with your signature and printed name, you will get Tandem Mileage. If you would rather have Road Mileage, just leave off the “T”.

SAFETY & EDUCATION
The Queensland Report
In Queensland less than 1% of all transportation is done by bicycle but they are
involved in 3% of the accidents. Nothing is without risk but bicyclists are safer
throughout the rest of the world. The Queensland Report [ http://
www.parliament.qld.gov.au/documents/committees/THLGC/2013/INQ-CYC/
rp-39-29Nov13.pdf] was created to address this problem and anyone interested
in bicycle safety should take the time [three hours for me] to read this report.
These people drive on the wrong side of the road and live a “rowdier” lifestyle
but “the truth knows no boundaries”. The primary cause of their high accident
rate was attributed to motorist hostility. In that country; motorists attack cyclists
with impunity and openly brag about it. This behavior would not be tolerated in
NH but the problem (“alienation of others”) is something we share and a
massive education effort to personify other users was recommended. The lesson
to be learned is that isolating users according to type of vehicle decreases safety
by creating “turf wars” and the “Recreational Bike Path” in Litchfield provides
undeniable proof. This path runs beside a lightly traveled (35 MPH) road with
11.5' (60 MPH) travel lanes that has no accommodation for bicycles. The path
isn't safe above 10 MPH, is untreated in the winter, and normal speed cyclists
(~15 MPH) should use the roadway. Controlling excessive speed requires active
enforcement and bicyclists using the roadway should expect to be harassed. This
road is parallel to (40 MPH) 3A which has the same width (24-26') of pavement
but the 10' (35-45 MPH) travel lanes create a shoulder (24-36”) for bicycles.
The number of people using 3A is far greater and the posted speed is higher but
the incidence of problems on it is virtually non-existent.
Holland has the safest roads in the world and their latest safety initiative has
lowered the posted speed limits (30-50 KPH) on all roads with total vehicle
integration. Their reduction in bike path emphasis has improved safety and
decreased transit times for all modes. They have the most efficient roadways in
Europe and we both travel about the same number of miles each year. For most
trips (95% are <5 miles) a bicycle requires the least amount of time (money) and
every mile it's used for transportation returns $1 to the community but motor
vehicle related fees only cover 54% of related costs.
People aren't too lazy to ride bikes; safety is the primary deterrent. Less than
10% of bicycle crashes involve a motor vehicle and in the vast majority (85%)
of crashes the bicyclist was breaking the law. Many of our current laws are
wrong (and unenforceable); we should focus on making them appropriate and
then demanding compliance. Unlit cyclists (on dark roads) struck by motorists
(from behind) is the leading cause of bicyclist fatalities. Queensland requires
bicycle lights (front and rear) to be lit at all times as they reduce the crash rate
by 30% and the incidence of serious injury by 60%. Flashing lights have ten
times the recognition factor.

Bike-Walk Alliance of NH Update – March 2014
"A Voice for New Hampshire's Bicyclists and Pedestrians"
The Bike-Walk Alliance of New Hampshire (BWA-NH) is pleased to offer a
wide range of bicycling education programs aimed at riders from age 8 to 80,
and maybe more! All programs are based on the nationally-acclaimed
League of American Bicyclist’s (LAB) “Smart Cycling” curriculum with all
instructors having been certified by the League. BWA-NH conducts these
programs throughout the state at low to no cost to the participants.
A brief overview of the five primary bike-ed programs follows. For more
details, contact the BWA-NH Office at 603.898.9926, email
[email protected].
For children, grades K-8:
School bike-ed safety presentations in a classroom or gym setting can be
covered in one period or about 45 minutes. Key points covered include
helmet use and fit, proper clothing for safety and visibility, basic bikehandling skills, riding with others, and very simple bike safety checks. Some
of the students participate in the training session, a technique which helps
keep all the students engaged and not become bored by just listening to a
presentation. Often schools have this level of training included in a NH Safe
Routes to School grant so there is no charge to the school district.
On-bike training (or bike rodeo) is offered to students who have completed
the basic classroom training. Typically conducted in a large, paved parking
lot away from motor traffic, the on-bike session requires about 3 hours in
total with about 25 students per instructor plus assistance from the school
staff for registrations and usually a local bike shop mechanic for bike safety
checks and minor repairs. Again, this level of training is often included in a
SRTS grant to a school. This training is also available for schools, church
groups, boys and girls clubs, scouts, et al by working directly with BWA-NH.
A unique “Residential Bike-Ed Program” combines the above into a series of
three 2-hour training sessions conducted in a private residential area whereby
several families want their children to learn about bicycling but without the
hassle of transporting the children, bikes, all support gears, snacks, etc. to
central location. Working from one designated home with quiet residential
roads available for the on-bike training, the program becomes a “family
affair” with all families contributing to the cost – often less than they would
spend for a single birthday party. This program is targeted for the school
summer vacation period and has received very positive reviews.
BWANH UPDATE
BWA-NH Bike-Ed Programs
PEDAL TALK
March / April 2014
Page 10
To schedule a fun bike-ed program in your neighborhood, just contact BWANH and we will work out the details.
For adults and older children:
The LAB “Traffic Skills 101” program is a 2-day course covering the rules and
techniques of vehicular cycling. Day one is mostly classroom training
conducted by several League Certified Instructors (LCIs). Day two consists of a
recap, parking lot drills, and then a road ride to practice what was taught in the
course. Graduates receive a certificate and their names are submitted to the
League’s office in DC.
TS-101 sessions are presently scheduled for April 26-27 in Portsmouth and June
14-15 in Concord. See the BWA-NH web site www.BWANH.org for details.
For teachers, coaches, and those working with Grade 4 & 5 students:
Individual training sessions occasionally conducted in schools with or without
the on-bike component do not have the lasting effect of routine and small bikeed topics being presented to all students during the entire school year, and year
after year. To help integrate standardized and sustainable bike-ed in our NH
schools for students in Grades 4 and 5, seemingly the most receptive ages,
BWA-NH is pleased to offer a “Train the Trainers” program for any school
personnel routinely working with those grade levels. The instructors are trained
in what they need to present to the students, how to do it, and all course material
are supplied. The “Bicycling 1-2-3 Youth Instructors” attain national
certification under the LAB program without them necessarily being highlyskilled cyclists themselves. It is all about what the students need to know to be
safer when cycling, not how far or fast the Youth Instructor may be able to bike.
The Youth Instructor training takes three hours, is conducted indoors, and may
be scheduled anytime and where practical for the participants. The cost?
Thanks to a Safe Routes to School grant to BWA-NH, provided at least six
participants attend the training, there is no cost to them or the school district.
2014 is the fourth and final year this program will be available until the SRTS
grant awarded to BWA-NH. To date, 54 "Bicycling 1-2-3 Youth Instructors"
have been trained and certified in twelve NH school districts to reach over 3,700
students annually. See the BWA-NH web site www.BWANH.org for details.
Questions?
For more information on any of the above bike-ed training opportunities, please
contact the BWA-NH Office at 603.898.9926 or email [email protected].

Traffic Skills 101
Classes in April and June, Portsmouth and Concord!
The popular Traffic Skills 101 bike safety classes are back. Two classes have been
scheduled, at two different locations, as follows:
•
•
April 26-27th -- Portsmouth, NH
June 14-15th - Concord, NH
This class teaches you how to ride safely, confidently and legally in traffic. If you
would like to learn more about reducing your risk of negative interactions with other
road users and gain a better understanding of traffic laws as they apply to cyclists, this
class is for you! Learn how and why it is safer to “drive your bike like a car”, how to
navigate safely through intersections and roundabouts, and how to perform essential
maneuvers like the quick-stop, instant turn, and other hazard-avoidance techniques.
The 2-day class takes place on a weekend from 9:00 am to approximately 4:00 pm
each day. The first day is instruction/demonstration. The second day is practical
application, so bring your bike! Even if you are an experienced cyclist, you will be
surprised at how much you did not know about safe cycling.
Students who took this class last year had this to say about their experience:
"I have commuted to work a few times now since the class with great results. I now
have the confidence to cycle through most traffic situations. I also have not had any
adverse actions from any drivers, not even a honk. Thanks for a great class! -- Bill"
"Thanks for an immeasurably helpful class." - Ursula
"As a beginner, I can not tell you how much I appreciate your course.... Nobody
wants to be a bug on a windshield." - Rick
Preregistration is required. The class costs $75, and a $10 discount can be applied if
you are a member of any of the following bike advocacy organizations: LAB,
BWANH, Bikes Belong, Bicycle Coalition of Maine, SABR, MassBike, or CNHBC
Board Members and Officers.
Traffic Skills 101 is also a prerequisite for becoming a League Cycling Instructor
(LCI). For more information on LAB's League Cycling Instructor program, go to -->
http://www.bikeleague.org/content/become-instructor
Stay tuned for information about the Traffic Skills 101 class, including how to register, or go to www.bwanh.org, and click on "Traffic Skills 101".
If you have any questions, or would like to reserve your spot, feel free to email the
class coordinators:
April class coordinator: Josh Walter [email protected]
June class coordinator: Paula Bedard [email protected]
NOTE: The Preregistration deadline for the April 26-27 class is Sunday, April 20th.
The prereg deadline for the June 14-15th class is Sunday, June 1st.

Tri-State Seacoast Century Weekend Update
The GSW is pleased to host the 41st annual Tri-State Seacoast Century
on September 20-21, 2014 with Donna Hepp of Belmont and Mark
MacKenzie of Manchester taking the lead. The prior event coordinators, Bob Koehler and Dave Topham, will be assisting “in the background” to help make a smooth transition.
Basic event plans and the beautiful route will remain, as will the $35.00
“Early Bird” registration fee for the whole weekend until July 31; then
$45.00 to the August 31 cut-off date or when 1,600 riders are registered.
New this year will be the use of BikeReg.com for the on-line registration process plus more Seacoast Century sub-committees. Check our
web site www.GraniteStateWheelmen.org for more details and to register on-line – no walk-ins.
Donna is the event General Coordinator while Mark is the Volunteer
Coordinator. As always, many 5-hour volunteers are needed both during the weekend at our Hampton Beach State Park headquarters and at
the remote rest stop in Kittery, Maine, plus considerable help before and
after the actual weekend. Mark will be contacting prior volunteers and
lining-up more help as plans develop.
For now, mark your calendars and plan to join us for the largest GSW
event of year. Cyclists from literally around the world have made this
ride a reason for vacationing in New England so don’t miss all the fun!

>>>>>2014 GSW Mileage >>>>>
IS YOUR MILEAGE CORRECT? It is your responsibility to make sure your
mileage is correct. To insure that your mileage is correct in Pedal Talk you
must record your mileage after each ride on the ride sheets provided by the ride
leader. If the sign-up sheet is not around, call your ride leader immediately to
record your mileage on the sheet. If unable to reach the ride leader, then call
Hetty Andrews at 603-889-3222 or email: [email protected] to get credit.
It is also your responsibility to print your name legibly on the ride sheet. If
I cannot read the name, you will not get credit. Rides must be listed in Pedal
Talk for the mileage to count with GSW. If you have a question about your
mileage, feel free to call me. If you send a printout of the dates, locations and
mileage, I will be glad to compare it to the computer records. Sometimes signup sheets have not been received. If you have a single GSW membership and a
spouse/significant other, son or daughter goes on a ride with you, please indicate that relationship on the sign up sheet, so he or she will get mileage credit.
RIDE LEADERS: It is very important that you do not hold ride sheets and
send them all in at once for the month. Please submit sheets on a weekly basis.
Also, all sheets must be in to me before the deadline of Pedal Talk to be accounted for in the mileage totals. Also note: Mileage pedaled on exploratory
rides earns mileage credit.

What is commuter mileage?
Commuter mileage includes using your bicycle, rather than a motor
vehicle, for transportation on any errand or to reach any destination
such as work, school, shopping, to pay a bill, or to reach a GSW ride
site, etc. The GSW encourages commuting and recognizes high
mileage commuters at the Annual Fall Banquet.
Commuter mileage is tracked from October 1st through
September 30th of each year.

Do those Concord folks cycle nearly EVERY morning?!?
Not necessarily…the rides are listed as opportunities to cycle, but if other
responsibilities get in the leaders’ way or weather/road conditions do not allow
cycling, the rides will not take place. That is why the ride notices indicate that
those planning to attend must contact a leader to confirm the ride is occurring. If
you get in touch about biking with us, we will make every effort to head out…
Orientation Rides – Concord
If you would like to attend orientation rides on Saturday
mornings to become accustomed to group cycling, contact
Eugene at 603-219-2051.
Eugene helps cyclists with pre-ride preparation, group coordination, proper shifting, safe cycling, and rules of the road.
The rides build confidence among beginner / casual group cyclists. If, during the
phone conversation, Eugene concludes that you would benefit from a different
mentor/leader, he will make a recommendation.
S&W Sports Bulletin Board
On the wall to the left of the entry door to S&W Sport there is a bulletin
board devoted to bicycling; especially the GSW and Concord Area
group rides. If you or someone you know would like to learn more
about local group cycling opportunities and pick up helpful information
about safety, etc., visit the bulletin board. There are numerous copies of
various handouts which can be taken away; they are accessible even
when the store is closed.

CONCORD RIDE ORGANIZATION & CONTACTS
I would like to have a “ride organizer” for each speed category. The organizer can be the contact person or they can seek another willing person in their
group to be the contact person listed in the PT notices. I am willing to continue to submit the rides notices to the PT editor, but I no longer have time to
seek a contact for every speed category. Already several groups (Tim Ainsworth’s and David Ross’ groups) are organized this
way, and it makes it a lot less time consuming for me. I
have been taking care of the task for a lot of years, and I
now need a little help.
If you would like more information about this, please
get in touch with me..

Retirement
I must retire from submitting the Concord Area cycling season
Wednesday afternoon/evening and Saturday morning ride notices.
Certainly another committed local person can take over, even for a
limited period such as the remainder of the 2014 cycling season. I
will support someone else through the transition, including forwarding
filed notices to use as a guide and lists of suggested CONTACTS for
various days and times.
I need a break. Can you take over for a while?
