MISSION STATEMENT:
Saint Therese, a Catholic organization
serving seniors of all faiths,
is dedicated to the well-being
of each individual.
Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.
— 1 John 3:17-18
Perspectives
Dear Friends,
Perspective. The last year we’ve all gotten a big dose of it, whether we wanted to or not. It’s not always easy to keep
perspective, especially when faced with challenging situations. Isn’t it amazing how some people always manage to
keep things in perspective, and never lose sight of what really matters, no matter what is happening around them?
Maintaining perspective can be a big challenge for any leader. So often caught up with shrinking budgets, expanding
costs, and other crises, leaders can sometimes lose sense of what’s really important—the people who are served by
and connected to the organization.
At Saint Therese, we are surrounded by amazing, wonderful people who have stories to tell, who have much to teach,
and who keep Saint Therese the special place that it is. Whether they be tenants, residents, volunteers, donors, or staff,
they all have valuable perspectives about the joys and challenges of aging, and caring for aging and disabled loved ones.
We feel blessed every day to be connected to such wonderful human beings. On any given day, we walk through our
buildings and see so many smiles and caring acts. God is present here every day in many ways.
Although we have many different perspectives, together we are accomplishing so much! During the 2008-2009 fiscal
year, Saint Therese purchased state-of-the-art balance equipment, the first of its kind on a Minnesota senior campus.
In addition, our occupancy rates remained extremely high; over 1,400 people received care, housing, or therapy services
from Saint Therese. We also held two extremely successful events that raised over $140,000 for Saint Therese programs
and services.
We hope you enjoy reading the stories here — the perspectives of people from our community. Thank you for supporting
Saint Therese.

A Nursing Assistant’s
Focus
EVEN AFTER NINE YEARS at Saint Therese as a
nursing assistant and trained medication aide, Jennie
Yalley still has a big smile for every resident she sees.
“You feel like they are your own parent or grandparent,
part of your family,” she says.
One resident in particular, named Lucy, has a special
fondness for Jennie. Jennie knows that Lucy likes warm
blankets around her, so she often brings them before
Lucy even asks. Lucy is so much like a part of Jennie’s
family that Jennie has brought her three grown sons in to
meet her. When Jennie has a day off, Lucy wants to
know when she will be back.
“Have patience and let them know that
they are loved. Do what you can to
make them happy. Give them what they
want, not what you want.”
That special relationship is one of the reasons that Jennie
likes working with seniors so much.
Saint Therese employs over 140 nursing assistants. Their
hard work often goes unnoticed, yet it is critical to the
happiness and safety of the residents.
2
Nursing assistants work around the clock caring for
residents. They get them up each morning, get them
dressed and looking nice and then take them to the
dining room for breakfast. They help with the restroom
and other cares; handle baths; and take residents to
activities, exercise, the beauty parlor or mass. In the
evenings, they get them to dinner and then to bed.
In between, they find time to visit, comfort and share
stories with residents. With 49 residents on a single
unit, it makes for a busy day!
Saint Therese’s Director of Nursing Stacy Lind says, “Caring
staff like Jennie make the difference for our residents.
They are resident - focused, kind and compassionate.
Jennie, in particular, embodies Saint Therese’s mission
in her attentive, caring way.”
When asked to describe the most important part about
caring for seniors, Jennie says, “Have patience and let
them know that they are loved. Do what you can to make
them happy. Give them what they want, not what
you want.”
MOST PEOPLE NEVER NOTICE the small wet spot
on the floor or the turned up corner on the rug, but
Robert Lewis and the other environmental services staff
members at Saint Therese are trained to notice and
address even the smallest safety hazards.
A Housekeeper’s
Point of View
For two years, Robert Lewis has worked in the environmental services department at Saint Therese. Before
that he ran his own business and worked at Fairview
University in its housekeeping department. Robert
specializes in floor care, stripping, buffing, and waxing,
as well as vacuuming carpets and cleaning spills.
In addition, Robert and the other housekeeping staff clean
restrooms, make beds, dust and polish. In the winter
Robert believes that respect and dignity
are the two most important things for
seniors. “... always make the residents
feel like they’re in control.”
products and filtration vacuums. They are dedicated to
improving the quality of the indoor environment for all
who are part of our campus. Through their hard work,
illnesses and accidents are kept to an absolute minimum.
Although caring for the residents is not exactly in Robert’s
job description, he still sees that as an important part
of his work, often helping residents get to and from places,
or stopping to tie someone’s shoes. Robert believes strongly
in taking pride in his work, and is friendy to everyone:
“Anytime I can bring joy to someone’s life or make them
smile, that brings joy to me.”
months, they spend extra time cleaning and disinfecting
hand rails and door handles to prevent the spread of disease.
The environmental services staff often operate behind the
scenes, keeping floors clean and eliminating germs from
surfaces. In addition, they clean for health, not just to
remove the dirt. They use environmentally- friendly cleaning
From his perspective and experience, Robert believes that
respect and dignity are the two most important things for
seniors. He also believes that Saint Therese does this very
well: “They give great customer service to the residents
and always make the residents feel like they’re in control.”
Connecting with the residents is so important to Robert
that he is studying to become a nursing assistant and
hopes to complete the program next year.

Through the Eyes
of a Caregiver
Every morning, Bob Kurvers walks from his apartment
in Saint Therese Residence to the Care Center next door.
He helps his wife Patricia, who has Alzheimer’s, with
brushing her teeth, combing her hair, and applying her
make up. Then he brings Patricia back to the apartment.
He puts the wheelchair in front of the window, gives her
some chocolate, and reads her the newspaper. Sometimes
they talk a little, and then Patricia usually falls asleep.
Around lunchtime, Bob pushes her back to the Care
Center and the afternoon stretches out before him.
For 57 years, Patricia has been at the center of Bob’s life.
Patricia and Bob attended high school together, and
Patricia sang in Bob’s swing band. While in the Navy,
Bob sent Patricia a letter, and, well, the rest is history.
They raised a son while Patricia taught fouth grade and
Bob worked for the Small Business Administration.
After retirement, they built a home on a lake, traveled,
and enjoyed life.
About 11 years ago, Patricia began showing the symptoms
of Alzheimer’s, and soon after, Bob became Patricia’s
caregiver. As the Alzheimer’s grew worse, she developed
some other health problems that required a great deal of
care from Bob. In December 2008, Patricia’s Alzheimer’s
became too advanced, and Bob had to place her in the
Saint Therese of New Hope Care Center. To be close to
her, Bob left his friends and previous apartment and
moved into the Residence.
Bob believes Patricia is getting wonderful care at Saint
Therese, a true blessing and a big improvement over
another care center.
Bob acknowledges that being a caregiver is not always easy
and admits that it has taken an emotional and physical
toll. For him, loneliness is the hardest part. Alzheimer’s
has claimed his best friend and he had to move away
from other friends. Because he always spends the mornings
caring for Patricia, he cannot participate in many of the

but age is a work of art.”
— Garson Kanin
outings or activities. In addition, trying to help her get
around, lifting her wheelchair in and out of the car, and
pushing it up and down the ramp has hurt his back.
Despite the challenges, Bob is so grateful that he can
take care of Patricia after all the years she took care of
their family. Bob says, “We are together and we love each
other. She still knows me and that’s all the matters.”
UPDATE: Since Bob was interviewed for this article, his
beloved wife Patricia passed away. Bob and their son Jay
were able to be by her side until the very end. Saint
Therese is very grateful to Bob for sharing their story.
A Tenant’s Perspective
Ernest “Doc” Lorentzen met his wife Nelia in a little
hospital in South Dakota where Nelia was a nurse. The
couple married and moved to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
During his long career in obstetrics, Doc delivered
3,000 babies. His wife Nelia was equally busy with
their five children. She served on the school board
in Detroit Lakes for 26 years and as International
President of Gideon’s Auxiliary. Nelia is also a talented
artist, and many of her paintings decorate the walls of
their apartment.
After retirement, the Lorentzens spent almost 20 years
enjoying the Arizona sunshine. But 12 years ago, Nelia
started noticing tremors, the first signs of Parkinson’s.
Her disease progressed slowly, and for many years, Doc
was able to be Nelia’s primary caregiver in Arizona.
Eventually, there came a time when it was best for them
to be close to family and have more help. So, in January
2009, they moved to Saint Therese at Oxbow Lake.
The Lorentzens are extremely positive people, who have
tremendous faith and feel a great sense of gratitude for
all of their blessings, but that doesn’t mean that growing
older has always been easy. Doc and Nelia were sad to
leave their home and church in Arizona, and Doc is
especially sorry that he can’t drive anymore. Now, their
kids have to pick them up for visits or trips to the store.
“It’s payback time,” Doc says with a
smile. “She did so much through the
years when I was a busy doctor. I’m
just thankful I’ve got her with me still.”
Nelia, who was a very independent person all throughout
her life, is now quite dependent on others. She is confined
to a wheelchair, suffers from congestive heart failure and
has other health problems. “My mind is clear,” she says,
“but my body hasn’t kept up.”
Despite that, they are content. They are so glad to be close
to family, they think the Oxbow Lake apartments are very
nice, the food is exceptional, and the staff members are
very pleasant.
They are also so happy that they can continue to be
together. “It’s payback time,” Doc says with a smile. “She
did so much through the years when I was a busy doctor.
I’m just thankful I’ve got her with me still.”

A Volunteer’s Vision
talk about raising their children and sharing the wisdom
they have as mothers.
In addition, Rebekah comes once a month to facilitate a
“Writer’s Circle.” The group meets to discuss tenants’
SINCE APRIL 2009, REBEKAH HULTGREN and her
two children, Lucas and Libby, have been “regulars” around
Saint Therese at Oxbow Lake. Rebekah and her children
come every week for “Walking Group,” where they go for
strolls with different tenants in the assisted living apartments.
“The lives we lead today are a product
of the sacrifices people before us have
made and that is something we cannot
take for granted...”
Three - year- old Lucas loves going outside with tenants
Phil and Mary Jane to see the pond. Lucas also loves that
Alice has introduced him to the pool table balls, which he
enjoys rolling around the table. Rebekah loves seeing the
relationships developing between her children and the tenants: “They rejoice in Lucas learning his ABC’s or Libby
learning to wave ‘bye-bye’ as if they were their own grandchildren.” Rebekah also appreciates listening to the women
6
current writing projects and share stories about what they
plan to write next. The group encourages each member to
complete their memoirs.
Rebekah says that she loves that Saint Therese at Oxbow
Lake really feels like a family: “From the very beginning,
staff and tenants have been so welcoming and happy to
see us when we come.” She also believes that every resident
has an amazing life story to share and that we all can
benefit from their experiences and the wealth of knowledge
they possess.
Although Rebekah volunteers out of her faith that God
has called us to serve one another, she also says that
volunteering at Saint Therese actually blesses her more
than the tenants. She encourages others to do the same:
“We need to remember the sacrifice and hard work that
has taken place in the generations before us. The lives
we lead today are a product of the sacrifices people before
us have made and that is something we cannot take for
granted. They need to be valued and recognized as
important people in our lives and communities.”
JOAN VILLELLA AND HER HUSBAND RON began
donating to Saint Therese almost 10 years ago, shortly
after Joan’s mother, Gladys Burns, moved into the Saint
Therese of New Hope Residence.
A Family Member and
Donor’s Point of View
Gladys Burns and her family chose Saint Therese because
of the Catholic atmosphere and because Gladys knew
several other tenants who were former neighbors.
She made many new friends and loved playing
bridge. Unfortunately, she fell a few years later and
broke her hip. After that, she was not able to return to
her apartment. She moved to the Care Center’s third
floor for a few years, before dementia robbed her of her
usual self. Now, she lives on the first floor in the
memory care unit.
Joan says that watching her mother’s mind deteriorate
has been one of the most challenging things about the
aging process. But it makes things a little easier to know
that her mother can attend church whenever she wants
and to see how much she likes the staff: “I am totally
at ease, knowing she is getting wonderful care. The
staff throughout the Care Center have the clients’
best interests at heart.”
“We donate money to organizations
that we know personally. We like to
know that our money is well spent.”
For the last several years, Joan and Ron and several of
their children have hosted a table at the Saint Therese
Associate Dinner. Their donations have helped Saint
Therese with important things like supporting Pastoral
Care, purchasing state -of-the -art balance equipment,
strengthening nursing scholarships, and building our
beautiful Family Courtyard and Healing Gardens.
The Villella’s understand that, even though nursing home
care is extremely expensive, philanthropy is an essential
part of ensuring great care and services. When asked why
they donate to Saint Therese, Joan says, “We donate
money to organizations that we know personally. We like
to know that our money is well spent.”
7
Donor Recognition
The excellent care and services that make Saint Therese
so special are due, in large part, to generous support from
the community.
Saint Therese serves people of all financial backgrounds;
in fact, over 60% of Care Center residents receive financial
assistance through the government. The government
determines the rate structure that provides for the basics
of long-term care. The Saint Therese Foundation fills the
gap left after government funding drops off, raising critical
charitable dollars that provide the services, programs,
and facilities that make Saint Therese such a wonderful
place to call home. Gifts to the Foundation are used
to fund innovative programming, pastoral care, nursing
scholarships, capital improvements, and much more.
Saint Therese acknowledges the individuals, corporations,
foundations, and associations for their generous gifts.
These gifts were provided between July 1, 2008 and June
30, 2009. Every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of
the names listed here. Please contact the Foundation at
763-531-5459 to correct any errors or omissions.

Saint Therese
Heritage Society
The Saint Therese Heritage Society recognizes those who have taken the important
step of supporting our mission to the elderly
through their wills, estate plans, life income
arrangements, or through an outright
contribution of $10,000 to a Saint Therese
Endowment Fund.
Our Heritage Society also honors the leadership, dedication and vision of our founders.
Not only does our Heritage Society guarantee
continued excellence in Catholic care for
our community’s elderly, it also provides critical
funds to help us continue providing outstanding services, programs, and facilities.

Community Benefit Statement
From the very beginning, Saint Therese has taken pride
in the fact that it has always been a good member of the
community. As a non-profit organization, Saint Therese
strives to help others within our immediate neighborhood
and beyond. We believe it is also important to communicate
our outreach and community support as part of our mission.
Documenting this work is an essential element for
earning public trust and validating our status as a nonprofit organization. Activities for the 2008-2009 fiscal
year are listed below:
• Saint Therese provided over $1.3 million dollars of free
•
•
•
•
care as a result of Medicaid reimbursement not covering
the entire cost of care. Over 60% of our residents
receive Medicaid reimbursement. We receive over $20 a
day less than the actual cost of providing the care. If we
were to make cuts to recover these expenses, we would
compromise the care of our residents.
To foster education and help train future leaders in our
industry, we contribute $12,000 a year to the University of
Wisconsin - Eau Claire to sponsor a student administrator.
Saint Therese is a host for social worker students from
the University of Minnesota -Twin Cities campus.
Spiritual care is at the center of our mission. Our extensive
pastoral care services include staff, liturgical costs,
music and much more. This vital program is paid for by
donations to Saint Therese.
Our staff recruited blood donors for the Red Cross.
Staff members volunteered their time and blood for this
worthy cause.
20
• Our staff participated in trade and professional associa•
•
•
tions to expand their skills and to advocate for social
fairness. This is also a way we can share our experiences
and knowledge to benefit others.
Saint Therese “Caring Fund” has assisted tenants with
special services if the tenant is unable to cover the
cost and has applied for the elderly waiver program.
Tenants and staff members in our communities hold a
food drive a various times throughout the year to help
families in need.
Saint Therese donated to various community partners to
strengthen their work. This year’s partners included
North Memorial Medical Center, Golden Valley
Rotary, Churches of St. Vincent and St. Gerard, North
Memorial Community Foundation, Catholic Eldercare,
Operation Christmas Child, St. Paul’s Monastery,
CEAP - Community Emergency Assistance Program,
Inc., Arc’s Value Village, and MVNA - Minnesota
Visiting Nurse Agency.
“You have a great staff at Saint Therese, and
you have been pure gold to me and my family.
Just wanted you to know how much we
appreciate Saint Therese these past few months.
Keep up the great work.”
