Only 45 minutes by speed boat from Bontang, Kutai National Park is home to many orang-utans and chimpanzees. Over 300 bird species and other unique animals also call this park home. Known as one of the best diving spots in the world, a whole host of unique marine wildlife calls these waters home. Go on a tour to discover the unique and protected species of this area including whales, dolphins, dugongs, coconut crabs, and stingless jellyfish. Turtles are also one of the major endangered species found in relative abundance here. Try some ‘ikan bakar’ (grilled fish) with the locals and stay in a comfortable wooden guesthouse in the villages. Derawan Dive School provides diving opportunities around the island. PONTIANAK Pontianak is the capital of West Kalimantan and lies on the banks of Indonesia’s longest river, the Kapuas River. Take a cruise along the Kapuas River and cross the equator. Also visit the Equator Monument built in 1928 to indicate the exact location of the equator. Visit Mesjid Abdurrahman, an 18th century mosque, a long-standing example of Sumatran architecture. Senggigi Beach One of the more highly developed tourist areas of Lombok. GILI ISLANDS Near the northwest corner of Lombok, the Gili Islands offer the perfect island lifestyle with no traffic or crowds. Known as the turtle capital of the world, snorkelling and marine life exploration is one of the major attractions. Take a day or night dive at ‘Shark Point’, watch the sunsets over Mt Agung volcano, or stay at a luxury private villa and escape reality completely. Idyllic coral islands, the Gili Islands are a hidden gem of the many Indonesian islands. MOUNT RINJANI NATIONAL PARK At 3,726m high, Mount Rinjani is the second tallest peak in Indonesia and a truly marvellous sight to view and explore. An active volcano lies in a large crater lake and hot springs are located north of the lake. While serious trekkers can take on Mount Rinjani (quite a significant feat), less adventurous tourists can explore the three famous caves, popular for meditation.
