My time as the
MN PHCC state
president is
quickly coming
to an end.
I hope your New Year has been good so far. It is nice to see gas prices under $2 a gallon;
I hope they can stay there for a while. I hope everyone has sent in your reservations for the
PHCC 2015 5-State Convention. It will be an educational and fun time, so please be involved.
My time as the MN PHCC state president is quickly coming to an end. Jeremy Carlson of
Carlson Duluth Company will be your next president. I would like to thank the members of
the Board for all of their time, effort, and decisions. A great diverse group of people working
together for a common goal is what makes PHCC such a great organization. I would also
like to thank IntrinXec Management, Inc., and their entire staff for helping us get back on
track and moving in the right direction. A special thanks goes to Jessica Bartram, Maria
Huntley, and Emily Stoeckmann for all of their efforts. They are starting to figure out how a
bunch of plumbing and heating professionals think and operate! I know it may be a surprise
to some of you, but we might be a “different breed of cat” than other trades—and that it’s
not just me that waits until the last minute to get things done.
I would like to send mine and our condolences out to John Sowada and his family for
his wife Tracy’s unexpected passing. Sowada & Barna Plumbing, LLC, has been a long time
member of PHCC. John is also a great friend and a member of our Board of Directors. My
thoughts and prayers are with you.
This month’s cover story is titled “Work-Life Balance: Thoughts for You and Your
Employees.” I had to think about this topic, as a service industry such as ours that is driven
by demand service. If it is -20 or 95 degrees outside, our heating service departments are
running at 125 percent–200 percent over capacity. Our plumbing service department also
becomes overloaded when temperatures are below zero for any length of time from frozen
water and drain lines.
These times, work-life balances are out of whack and there is nothing we can do except
to “keep at it and get it done.” Our new construction departments also have peak times—
usually in the spring. All the general contractors want to start their sold homes as soon as
road restrictions are off, so that they can get the holes dug and block delivered and installed.
It never fails: two or three times more work will have to be scheduled in a short amount of
time than can possibly be done.
We always seem to get it done, but always at the expense of ourselves and our employees. I
have not heard of anyone who has come up with any solutions for fixing this dilemma for our
industry. The answer I have always been told is, “this is the nature of the beast.” How we can
make it better for ourselves, our employees, and our customers is the million dollar question.
Advice is cheap, so I will give you some really inexpensive words of wisdom. Treat your
employees as you would your company’s very best customers, because you sure don’t want
to lose either one. Show your appreciation to your employees for their extra efforts. Work
with them when their family obligations conflict with work obligations; don’t make them
choose between work and family. Sometimes customer problems may have to wait till
tomorrow; just call and talk to them.

Is work-life balance a dated concept? A myth? The work–leisure dichotomy was invented
in the mid-1800s when anthropologists proposed that a definition of happiness was one
that has as much separation as possible between work and play.
The phrase “work-life balance” was first introduced in the U.K. in 1972 and in the United
States in 1986—when the mobile phone was a new invention, poised to replace phones
implanted in cars and equipment. Dated it is, but its relevance in the workplace has never
been more significant. As technology has deeply blurred the lines between work and play,
connection to work is 24/7/365.
In a variety of research studies, work-life balance is generally ranked among the top five
job attributes that top performers seek and it plays a significant role in engaging and
retaining talent. Creating an environment that makes the modern day work-life balance
more attainable is a combination of programming and leadership. Let’s start with steps
to take on the program side.

Companies who have reputations for
environments that place a priority on worklife balance work with their employees to
negotiate a balance that best meets their
needs—as long as work gets done and
obligations are met. While they focus on
structure, they are adept at being flexible
within boundaries. Their practices include:
—— A variety of flexible work schedule
options that appeal to various
segments and demographics within
their workforce.
—— Flexible work options that are
conducive to their specific business
operations and job roles.
—— Equal claims on flexibility no matter the
employee’s age or life circumstances—no
work-life balance trump card that can
compromise the success of flexible work
arrangements.
—— Supervisors and manager discretion
to have conversations with employees
regarding their schedules and work /
life needs.
—— Ability to make up hours without
using paid time off (PTO) or having
pay deducted.
—— Unlimited sick and personal time—
more and more companies are doing
this: over a third of companies on
a recent Best Small & Medium
Workplaces list extended this benefit
to employees. What’s interesting to
note is that even with this generous
offer, employees typically take fewer
days off for health reasons!
BEST PLACES TO START
Flexibility
Flexibility is probably the biggest factor
in creating a successful work-life balance
program. Research shows that almost 50
percent of workers say a flexible schedule is
what they value most when evaluating an
employer. What’s more, many working adults
are willing to give up some percentage of
their salary for more flexibility at work; that’s
how important it is.
Here are some ways to make flexibility
work for you:
—— Tools to help managers address flexible
work needs—such as request forms and
guides to implementing flexible work
arrangements—and training.
—— Give employees more control over their
schedules; consider a job-share model
so that the customer demand is met.
—— Technology to help employees do
their work outside of the physical
boundaries of the office.
—— Encourage and support
telecommuting and working remotely.
Some interesting and progressive
practices include:
—— An 11-month year work option—
this works for companies that have
busy seasons.
—— Thirty hours a week is considered fulltime for labor intensive companies.
—— A strict maximum number
of work hours.
—— CARE Days, where preventative
measures are offered and paid for by
the company, saving employees time
and money.
—— Managers are held accountable when
their employees don’t take enough
time off.
—— Offer flextime and flex-location options.
—— Allow flexible paid time off.
Accommodation
While flexibility is a fairly universal need
among employees, you should also make
an effort to accommodate the individual
needs of your staff. Some “perks” you
might consider offering include:
—— Fitness benefits
—— Legal assistance
—— Financial planning
—— Employee development courses
—— Childcare programs
—— Tuition assistance programs
—— Grocery services
A LOOK BEYOND
PROGRAMMATIC SOLUTIONS
Organizations that are judged by
employees to be the most effective in
helping employees juggle work and personal
responsibilities effectively manage a broader
set of workplace dynamics. Specifically,
within these “work-life balance leaders”:
—— Clear direction regarding
organizational priorities is provided—
to help employees focus on the
highest-value tasks.
—— Policies and practices are consistently
implemented—to ensure that
workloads are seen as fairly and
equitably distributed.
—— High levels of teamwork within
and across organizational units are
emphasized—to provide employees
with access to support from co-workers
in coping with work demands.
—— Strong support for training and
development and high levels of
empowerment are provided—to
ensure that employees have the skills
and decision-making authority to get
the job done.
—— Adequate resources (e.g., tools,
equipment, and technology) are
supplied—to enable employees to
execute work tasks efficiently and
with high quality.
The key message for you as a CEO or
business owner is that many of the same
factors that are associated with a more
engaged and effective work force also lead
to work environments where employees
are more positive about stress and worklife balance issues.
The benefits of getting it right from a
program perspective and a leadership
perspective are real; you will position
yourself to retain your key talent, which just
might be the majority of your workforce.

The 5-State Convention is almost here! I
am so excited and I hope you are too. There
are a lot of great classes to attend, and the
vendor show is always a lot of fun. We have
been putting together some fun activities
for Auxiliary members and their spouses
to do as well. Make sure to register for the
Convention and pick up your packet!
We have tickets to attend the
Minneapolis Home & Garden show at
the Minneapolis Convention Center that
weekend. There will be two shuttle runs:
one will be on Wednesday right after
lunch at the hotel, and it will return in
time for the reception. The other will be

on Friday morning, and will be returning
in the late afternoon.
New This Year: During the vendor
show, there will be a boutique with
vendors, crafters, and exhibitors in the
lobby just for us. We will have a very
interesting selection of items to choose
from. Bring a friend!
Finally, we will be having a silent
auction on Thursday in the Earle Brown
Heritage Center. There will be some great
sports memorabilia and items of interest
for everyone! The auction will close at 8
p.m. during the fabulous banquet that is
returning this year. We will need a few
volunteers to help man this throughout
the day on Thursday for short shifts.

Is Right Around the Corner
I am so excited that February is here, and
that the 5-State Convention is right around
the corner. I remember last year’s convention
like it was yesterday. I was brand new to the
PHCC and didn’t know much. Fast forward
to a year later, and I am amazed at how much
I have learned—and admittedly, I still have
things left to learn!
Planning a 5-state Convention with four
seasoned and incredible executives—rather
than a Minnesota Convention—has been a
whirlwind! I have been working closely with
the surrounding states to develop an excellent
5-State Convention for you that has some
tremendous speakers, sessions, networking
opportunities, and social activities.
There are several highlights at this
year’s Convention—too many to name
here! It is a must that you check out our
schedule on pages 20-21 of this issue,
and also go to the Convention’s website at
www.phccmidwest.com. Here you will find
program, registration, hotel information,
and much more!
For those of you interested in continuing
education, there is something for every state
being offered. Details can be found on the

New Year. New Energy Conservation Standards.
The final countdown is on! New Department of Energy (DOE) energy conservation standards for residential cooling equipment went into effect on
Jan. 1, 2015. For two product classes—split system central air conditioners and single package central air conditioners—the new minimum use
standards are based on the region of the country where the equipment is installed … meaning a new enforcement system for HVACR contractors.

Hand Sanitizers—you know you need them, but
what do you know about them?
It’s that time of year again. You probably had your flu shot clinic
already and/or have encouraged employees to get their shots
off-site. But you know you are facing the headache of numerous
absences when colds, stomach bugs, and influenza really hit your
facility. Hand sanitizers can be an important element in fighting
workplace illness, but just what do you know about them?
You certainly have heard that hand hygiene is an important adjunct
to immunization to fighting the flu in the workplace. In fact, the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that hand
hygiene is one of the most important ways to prevent the spread of
infections. Dr. William Schaffner, past-president, National Foundation
for Infectious Diseases (NFID) and moderator of the NFID Influenza/
Pneumococcal News Conference, has said, “In addition to an annual
flu vaccine, everyday hand hygiene is an important step to help
reduce the spread of infections that cause illness.”
Samantha R. Williams, spokesperson for GOJO, inventors of
PURELL® Hand Sanitizer, said that scientific studies conducted in
real-world settings underscore the recommendations of experts
that good hand hygiene is an important strategy to help prevent
the spread of germs. “Access to PURELL Hand Sanitizer and hand
hygiene education led to 20 percent reduction in absenteeism in a
workplace setting,” she says.
Practicing hand hygiene is important every time a worker’s hands
have contacted a potentially contaminated surface, such as:
• Hands of others (a handshake is a significant infection
pathway)
• Doorknobs
• Handles (including microwaves, refrigerators, water
dispensers, and material handling equipment)
• Copier, printer, or telephone buttons or parts
• Coffee pots and vending machines
• Elevator buttons and stair railings
• Bathroom fixtures (Note, bathroom door handles are
actually not the most contaminated object in a restroom,
and have less germs and viruses than desk tops. Since
restroom doors push out, this is usually not a problem.)
To get employee buy-in and establish a culture of hand hygiene,
establish norms and etiquette in your workplace, says Williams.
Publicize these efforts through the use of posters, department
meetings, and in other employee communications.

EPA Takes Action
to Protect Public from Harmful Lead Exposure
The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) recently announced 62
enforcement actions that require renovation
contractors and training providers to protect
people from harmful exposure to lead dust
and debris, as required by EPA’s Lead-based
Paint Renovation, Repair, and Painting
(RRP) standards.
The enforcement actions include 55
settlements and six complaints issued
between February and October of 2014
for renovations performed on pre-1978
homes and child-care facilities. All of
the settlements require that the alleged
violators certify their compliance with
RRP standards and, in most cases, pay
civil penalties. In two of the settlements,
the violators agreed to fund voluntary lead
abatement supplemental environmental
projects, which require the removal of leadbased paint and post-construction testing
to ensure that no hazardous conditions
remain. The settlements led to $213,171
in civil penalties and the violators coming
into compliance with federal law. These
recent actions are in addition to EPA’s
settlement with Lowe’s Home Improvement
in April 2014, which included a $500,000
civil penalty as well as implementation of a
corporate-wide RRP compliance program.
“Children are most vulnerable to the
dangers of lead paint exposure, especially
those in predominantly minority and
low-income communities, where housing
is more likely to contain lead-based paint,”
said Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator
for EPA’s Office of Enforcement and
Compliance Assurance. “These cases to
enforce the RRP rule are vitally important
to improving compliance among companies
that handle lead-based paint. This leads to
safer communities, healthier children and a
level playing field for companies that follow
the law.”
Lead dust and debris from improper
renovation activities on properties built
prior to 1978 is a major source of lead
exposure that can cause lead poisoning.
Although using lead-based paint in
dwellings was prohibited after 1978, it
is still present in more than 30 million
homes across the nation, in all types of
communities. The RRP Rule provides
important protections for children and
others vulnerable to lead exposure. Even low
levels of lead in the blood of children can
result in behavior and learning problems,
lower IQ and hyperactivity, slowed growth,
hearing problems, and anemia. In rare cases,
ingestion of lead can cause seizures, coma,
and even death.
The RRP Rule, which is part of the federal
Toxic Substances Control Act, is intended
to ensure that owners and occupants of pre1978 “target housing” and “child-occupied
facilities” receive information on lead-based
paint hazards before renovations begin, that
individuals performing such renovations
are properly trained and certified, and that
renovators and workers follow specific leadsafe work practices during renovations to

the cited violations. Enforcement penalties
also help deter violations by others in the
regulated industry, and level the playing

Contractors that are certified under
EPA’s RRP standards are encouraged to
display EPA’s “Lead-Safe” logo on worker’s
uniforms, signs, websites, and other material,
as appropriate. Consumers can protect
themselves by looking for the logo before
hiring a home contractor, and by being
generally aware of whether a renovator is
following lead-safe work practices when
working on their property.
