The frigid air has funneled as far south as the Gulf Coast. It hasn’t been this cold for decades -- 20 years in Washington, D.C., 18 years in Milwaukee, 15 years in Missouri -- even in the Midwest, where bundling up is second nature. Meteorologist Ryan Maue said, “If you’re under 40 (years old), you’ve not seen this stuff before.” Snow will reduce the sun’s heating effect, so nighttime lows have plummeted because of the strong northwest winds. This will be the first Super Bowl to be played outdoors in a cold weather environment, the first played on February 2, 2014. The Super Bowl is the biggest game of the season in the National Football League, and could be the biggest game of any sport in the United States of America. This game features the two best teams in the National Football League as they battle it out for the right to be named NFL Champions, a distinction that allows a team to live on forever in the lore of sports. 2014’s NFL playoff game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ could be among one of the coldest ever played. If you service customers in cold weather, frozen pipes come with the territory. Just because our customers didn’t have problems last year, doesn’t mean they won’t be subjected to problems this year. Thankfully the solution isn’t complicated. With regular maintenance and attention, we can keep our valued customer’s home safe. Surprisingly, ice forming in a pipe does not typically cause a break where the ice obstacle occurs. It’s not the radial 4 Illinois Master Plumber, February 2014 expansion of ice against the wall of the pipe that causes the break. Rather, following a complete ice blockage in a pipe, continued freezing and expansion inside the pipe causes water pressure to increase downstream -- between the ice blockage and a closed faucet at the end. It’s this increase in water pressure that leads to pipe failure. The only way for a solid pipe to expand is with cracks and ruptures. Whatever the economic conditions, there is always a great demand for plumbers. That’s good news for plumbing businesses looking to accelerate on the increased demand for their service. These are more difficult times for our “Commercial” only entities, as the economy continues to fluctuate. Current Employment Statistics as provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor; stated in December 2013, nonresidential specialty trade contractors constituted the bulk of the job loss, shedding 13,000 jobs and reversing small gains over the prior 3 months. In December, employment declines possibly were reflected by unusually cold weather in parts of the country. We encourage you to mark your calendars now for the Illinois PHCC Expo which will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 at the Drury Lane Conference Center in Oakbrook Terrace. The memorable trade show doors will open from noon until 5:00 p.m. Illinois PHCC would also like to extend their invitation to the phenomenal continuing education class offered the same morning March 21, 2014 to fulfill your 4 hours of continuing education. Please make sure and preregister for this event President’s Thoughts Continued as the continuing education spots fill up fast. Preregistration is required, as we are unable to accept walk-ins. This session’s continuing education topics will focus on the new ADA requirements and how these relate to plumbing, new federal water heater regulations that take effect in 2015, code updates, and updates on the Illinois Department of Public Health plumbing program. Whether you are a plumber, business owner, supplier, inspector, or engineer the Expo has something for you. This is our opportunity to see the latest tools, devices, plumbing material, faucets, resources, or trucks for the trade. Please join us immediately after the trade show for the “After Expo Reception” featuring free food, fun, and prizes as donated by the exhibitors. So far, this winter is proving to be a cold one. Could you be missing out on new business? It is in times like these that dynamic organizations transform themselves and revolutionary organizations take action. It is in times like these that creative, innovative, and passionate individuals lead change within their organizations and seize this immense opportunity. These are tough times for many, as the economy continues to fluctuate, many organizations across America are conservatively, even anxiously, waiting to see what tomorrow’s headlines will bring. Whatever tomorrow brings let’s move forward today. “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new. “ -Eleanor RooseveltBest Regards, William D. Back to Basics - Good Old Common Sense Tips by Nancy Friedman, The Telephone Doctor Telephone Doctor Customer Service training has focused an entire career developing ways to help companies communicate better with their customers. We’ve helped thousands. How? With our simple, logical techniques that most folks already know and we bring them to the forefront. we have hundreds, if not thousands, of ideas, tips, skills and techniques to share. To start the New Year out right, here are fifteen customer service tips that are good old common sense thoughts that bring you back to the basics. Most businesses go out of their way to attempt to give good customer service. Some make it; some don’t. Here we go: 1. “Please” and “thank you” always have been, Customers go out of their way looking for companies that give great customer service. Some find it; some don’t. 2. We have tried so very hard to explain to both sides. It’s not rocket science; it’s not brain surgery. It’s plain old common sense. But you and I know common sense is not out there. There is a mass of grey average out there. You don’t wanna be in it. Rise above that mass of grey and come along with Telephone Doctor. Customers love to vent. They love to report on how badly they’ve been handled. And today with the internet, it’s sad how stuff goes viral so quickly. I cannot count the number of articles out there on customer service. Some are good, some not; some have new ideas; some speak the old tried and true. And that’s where Telephone Doctor Customer Service Training comes into play – plain old customer service. We call it ‘Back to Basics.’ You can imagine and always will be, powerful words. Seldom overused. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. “You’re welcome” is the best replacement for “no problem.” “Sorry ‘bout that” is not an apology. It’s a cliché. “My apologies” is much better. A frown is a smile upside down. Stand on your head if you must; but SMILE, darn it! You cannot do two things well at once. Pay attention to the call or the customer. One word answers on email or in person are considered cold and rude. Three words make a sentence. Learn what phrases frustrate your customers. They’re probably the same ones that bother you. Illinois Master Plumber, February 2014 11 Back to Basics - Good Old Common Sense Tips 8. 9. When was the last time you sent flowers to someone just because? Drop a personal handwritten note to a client and just say “thanks for being a good client.” 10.“Hey how ‘ya doing?” is not a great way to start up a conversation. 11.Out with friends or family? Put the cell phone away. Talk for 30 minutes. (If you remember how.) 12.Email manners? The same as phone and in person. 13.The old “don’t tell ‘em what you can’t do; tell ‘em what you can do” applies to most, if not all, customer interactions. 12 Illinois Master Plumber, February 2014 Continued 14.Get excited! 15.Oh, and smile. That needed to be said twice. Nancy Friedman, president of Telephone Doctor, is a featured speaker at association, franchise, and corporate meetings. DRIVING IN SNOW AND ICE Another important ToolBox Talk brought to you by the Quality Service Contractors (QSC) – An Enhanced Service Group of PHCC, P.O. Box 6808, Falls Church, VA 22040. Ph. 800-533-7694.Visit our website at: http://www.qsc-phcc.org. Driving in Snow and Ice The best advice for driving in bad winter weather is not to drive at all, if you can avoid it. Don’t go out until the snow plows and sanding trucks have had a chance to do their work, and allow yourself extra time to reach your destination. If you must drive in snowy conditions, make sure your car is prepared and that you know how to handle road conditions. It’s helpful to practice winter driving techniques in a snowy, open parking lot, so you’re familiar with how your car handles. Consult your owner’s manual for tips specific to your vehicle. Driving safely on icy roads 1. Decrease your speed and leave yourself plenty of room to stop. You should allow at least three times more space than usual between you and the car in front of you. 2. Brake gently to avoid skidding. If your wheels start to lock up, ease off the brake. 3. Turn on your lights to increase your visibility to other motorists. 4. Keep your lights and windshield clean. 5. Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills. 6. Don’t use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads. 7. Be especially careful on bridges, overpasses and infrequently traveled roads, which will freeze first. Even at temperatures above freezing, if the conditions are wet, you might encounter ice in shady areas or on exposed roadways like bridges. 8. Don’t pass snow plows and sanding trucks. The drivers have limited visibility, and you’re likely to find the road in front of them worse than the road behind. 9. Don’t assume your vehicle can handle all conditions. Even four-wheel and front-wheel drive vehicles can encounter trouble on winter roads. If your rear wheels are skidding 1. Take your foot off the accelerator. 2. Steer in the direction you want the front wheels to go. If your rear wheels are sliding left, steer left. If they’re sliding right, steer right. 3. If your rear wheels start sliding the other way as you recover, ease the steering wheel toward that side. You might have to steer left and right a few times to get your vehicle completely under control. 4. If you have standard brakes, pump them gently. 5. If you have anti-lock brakes (ABS), do not pump the brakes. Apply steady pressure to the brakes. You will feel the brakes pulse — this is normal. If your front wheels are skidding 1. Take your foot off the accelerator and shift to neutral, but don’t try to steer immediately. 2. As the wheels skid sideways, they will slow the vehicle and traction will return. As it does, steer in the direction you want to go. Then put the transmission in “drive” or release the clutch, and accelerate gently. If you are stuck 1. Do not spin your wheels. This will only dig you in deeper. 2. Turn your wheels from side to side a few times to push snow out of the way. 3. Use a light touch on the gas, to ease your car out. 4. Use a shovel to clear snow away from the wheels and the underside of the car. 5. Pour sand, kitty litter, gravel or salt in the path of the wheels, to help get traction. 6. Try rocking the vehicle. (Check your owner’s manual first — it can damage the transmission on some vehicles.) Shift from forward to reverse, and back again. Each time you’re in gear, give a light touch on the gas until the vehicle gets going. Illinois Master Plumber, February 2014 17 Continued d Get a grip. To have adequate snow traction, a tire requires at least 6/32-inch deep tread, according to The Tire Rack. (New passenger-car tires usually have 10/32-inch of tread.) Ultrahigh-performance “summer” tires have little or no grip in snow. Even “all-season” tires don’t necessarily have great snow traction: Some do, some don’t. If you live where the roads are regularly covered with snow, use snow tires (sometimes called “winter tires” by tiremakers). They have a “snowflake on the mountain” symbol on the sidewall, meaning they meet a tire-industry standard for snow traction. d Make sure you can see. Replace windshield wiper blades. Clean the inside of your windows thoroughly. Apply a water-shedding material (such as Rain-X) to the outside of all windows, including the mirrors. Make sure your windshield washer system works and is full of an anti-icing fluid. Drain older fluid by running the washers until new fluid appears: Switching fluid colors makes this easy. d Run the air-conditioner. In order to remove condensation and frost from the interior of windows, engage your air-conditioner and select the fresh air option: It’s fine to set the temperature on “hot.” Many cars automatically do this when you choose the defrost setting d Check your lights. Use your headlights so that others will see you and, we hope, not pull out in front of you. Make sure your headlights and taillights are clear of snow. If you have an older car with sand-pitted headlights, get a new set of lenses. To prevent future pitting, cover the new lens with a clear tape like that used to protect the leading edge of helicopter rotor blades and racecar wings. It’s available from auto-racing supply sites. d Give yourself a brake. Learn how to get maximum efficiency from your brakes before an emergency. It’s easy to properly use antilock brakes: Stomp, stay and steer. Stomp on the pedal as if you were trying to snap it off. Stay hard on the pedal. If you drive on icy roads or roads that are covered with snow, modify your ABS technique: After you “Stomp” and the ABS begins cycling — you will feel pulses in the pedal or hear the system working — ease up slightly on the pedal until the pulsing happens only once a second. d For vehicles without ABS, on a mixed-surface road, push the brake pedal hard until the wheels stop rolling, then immediately release the brake enough to allow the wheels to begin turning again. Repeat this sequence rapidly. This is not the same as “pumping the brake.” Your goal is to have the tires producing maximum grip regardless of whether the surface is snow, ice or damp pavement. 18 Illinois Master Plumber, February 2014 d Watch carefully for “black ice.” If the road looks slick, it probably is. This is especially true with one of winter’s worst hazards: “black ice.” Also called “glare ice,” this is nearly transparent ice that often looks like a harmless puddle or is overlooked entirely. Test the traction with a smooth brake application or slight turn of the wheel. d Remember the tough spots. Race drivers must memorize the nuances of every track, so they can alter their path for changing track conditions. You must remember where icy roads tend to occur. Bridges and intersections are common places. Also: wherever water runs across the road. I know people who lost control on ice caused by homeowners draining above-ground pools and by an automatic lawn sprinkler that sprayed water onto a street in freezing temperatures. d Too much steering is bad. If a slick section in a turn causes your front tires to lose grip, the common — but incorrect — reaction is to continue turning the steering wheel. That’s like writing checks on an overdrawn account: It won’t improve the situation and may make things worse. If the icy conditions end and the front tires regain grip, your car will dart whichever way the wheels are pointed. That may be into oncoming traffic or a telephone pole. Something very similar happens if you steer too much while braking with ABS. Sadly, there are situations where nothing will prevent a crash, but turning the steering too much never helps. d Avoid rear-tire slides. First, choose a car with electronic stability control. Fortunately, ESC is mandatory on all 2012 and newer models. Next, make sure your rear tires have at least as much tread as your front tires. Finally, if you buy winter tires, get four. d Technology offers no miracles. All-wheel drive and electronic stability control can get you into trouble by offering a false sense of security. AWD can only help a vehicle accelerate or keep moving: It can’t help you go around a snow-covered turn, much less stop at an icy intersection. ESC can prevent a spinout, but it can’t clear ice from the roads or give your tires more traction. Don’t let these lull you into overestimating the available traction. Regardless of your driving skill or vehicle preparation, there are some winter conditions that can’t be conquered. But these tips may help prevent snowy and icy roads from ruining your day.
