Message
Dear Recruiters,
It gives me immense pleasure to introduce the eleventh batch of IIMA’s Armed Forces Programme (AFP).
Participants are undergoing a six month fully residential course in Business Management at IIM Ahmedabad.
The programme is designed to facilitate transition of these experienced and talented leaders from uniformed
service into senior and mid-level positions in business. The current batch of 56 Officers is a mix of serving and
retired Officers of significant experience in diverse fields. These Officers have outstanding career records in fields
ranging from general administration to technical roles and operational responsibilities. They bring onboard
proven leadership experience, consistent track records, enviable dedication and loyalty to their organisation.
They possess competence in the domains of operations, administration and human resource management
which have been acquired, tested, and proven under demanding conditions and challenging circumstances.
The current course, AFP15, is the first batch which has been inducted after clearing a
competitive selection examination conducted by IIMA.
The core areas of management covered in the course include Corporate Finance, Business Analytics, Economics,
Strategy, Operations and Project Management, Marketing, Organisational Behaviour, Human Resources, and
Communication. The programme has further honed their skills in corporate management and transformed
this treasure house of experience into a set of managers well equipped to add value to the organisations they
will join in the near future. I am certain that they will be invaluable assets to their respective organisations due
to their capabilities, commitment, and self-motivation.
I would urge you as recruiters to collaborate with us at IIM Ahmedabad to harness the skills of the talented
participants in the AFP programme and help in their smooth transition to the corporate world. I wish the
participants tremendous success in the years to come and look forward to seeing them as active contributors to
the organizations they join.

From Programme
Co-Chairs
We are pleased to present
the eleventh batch of 56
participants from the Armed
Forces Programme (AFP)
undergoing a rigorous, sixmonths, fully residential
programme in Business
Management. This batch
of AFP is unique as, for
the first time, they have
been selected into this
programme through
a competitive process
conducted by IIMA
AFP at IIM Ahmedabad is specially designed for Officers of the Armed Forces. The
programme reorients and prepares these military leaders to add value to organizations
in an increasingly complex and demanding corporate environment. This education and
training sharpens their skills and equips them further to take on challenges of business
and non-military organizations. Each Officer participating in this programme has rich
experience and possesses proven expertise in specific areas. Across the batch, these areas
range from Project Management, Operations, Supply Chain Management, Finance,
Accounting, Information Technology, Law, Human Resource Management and Security.
Through a series of the foundation and specialized courses in management, the programme
curriculum has provided detailed exposure to the current business environment; and
strong conceptual and analytical abilities to complement the participants’ knowledge
and expertise. The pedagogy at IIMA, primarily using case studies, enhances domain
knowledge of management, and knowledge about the corporate world and industry.
Exposure to nuances of management has been further bolstered through projects,
assignments, industry visits and interactions with guest speakers from industry.
Participants from recent batches of AFP have repeatedly surpassed expectations of
recruiters in knowledge, ability, and on the job performance. We are certain that the
corporate sector would gain immensely from the rich and diverse experience of these
participants, and they will be a great asset to any organization that they work for. We wish
them the very best in their future careers.

About
AFP & Course Curriculum
THE SOLDIER PERPETUAL
Another day of mine begins, in rays lent by the Sun,
A new challenge awaits - I arise to the mission.
The weather is quite harsh and the terrain utterly mean,
I plan for the predicted, provide for the unforeseen.
I have ventured uncharted waters, crossed unforgiving straits,
I relentlessly hone my skills and imbibe impeccable traits.
My strategy prevails over odds, uncertainty it survives,
I cannot afford to err, I am entrusted with lives!
In the face of dreaded risks and dauntless under fire,
I step to the forefront - I shall lead, I shall inspire.
With my heart and soul ablaze, spirit flaring bright,
I shall neither rest, nor seek respite.
With renewed vigour I emerge, against all the wind’s might,
I am poised to set sail, primed to take the flight!

How the Armed Forces officers have been metamorphosed
into their new role as corporate warriors by IIMA
A balanced mix of faculty comprising academicians, researchers and professionals drawn from the public/
private sector represent the right enablers for the best minds in the country. Following the case study method
of interactive pedagogy, the learning is virtually experiential. In areas where new skills are imparted to
participants, classroom discussions are aided by simulating techniques and real life scenarios.
The programme is unique in terms of building upon the existing diverse experiences of the participants
while providing strategic learning inputs in areas where individual experience is limited. Through all this, the
programme seeks to tune and contemporize the managerial competencies of the Armed Forces Officers so as
to leverage their experience and skills to meet the requirements of the corporate world.

“It has been a pleasure to interact with
the AFP15 participants both during the
course on Economic Policy where I was
the Instructor as well as in conversations
outside the class. I found them to be
enthusiastic and quick learners. They
quickly disproved a hypothesis I had at
the beginning of the course that those
with some years in the Armed Forces
will be accustomed to following orders
and will be weak on initiative. At the
end of each session an assignment was
declared and the participants had to
make a presentation on that in the next
session - the range of logical arguments
offered by them on the path of Exchange
Rates, Interest Rates, and Budgetary
& Monetary Policy showed a deep
interaction with foundational issues
within a short span of time. These hardworking, sharp, flexible, and committed
participants will be a valuable resource
to the organization they work for.”

“Operations Planning and Execution
has always been a forte of Officers of
the Armed Forces. The adaptability of
these Officers in handling the complex
and challenging situations on and off
the field makes them ideally suited
for managing most of the business
situations at ease. Their conventional
strengths in managing teams, logical
ability, and conclusive deductionshave been further honed with business
acumen by the courses at IIMA. I
am sure that these Officers would be
appreciable assets for the organizations
in the field of Operations, Logistics,
Supply Chain Management and Project
Management.”

“As a faculty for “Marketing” course for
this batch, I facilitated the participants
in learning basic principles of
marketing. In the marketing course,
the participants analysed more than 20
different marketing case studies that has
helped in developing their marketing
acumen, analytical capabilities and has
exposed them to marketing issues in
a variety of industry contexts. Based
on my observation, I can vouch that
a number of participants will excel at
marketing roles in the companies. Given
their background which inculcates hard
work and discipline, the participants
have gained adequate knowledge, skills
and techniques across different areas
of marketing and management in a
quick time. They have also been able
to develop their conceptual, analytical
and execution skills in this domain. I
am convinced that they have necessary
abilities to deliver winning results as
middle and senior level managers.
I find this AFP group to be interactive
and willing to engage and seek
knowledge. I wish them all the best in
their placement endeavours.”
Prof. Sanjeev Tripathi
Marketing Area, I.I.M Ahmedabad
“Participants of IIMA’s Armed Forces
Programme are disciplined, dedicated,
goal driven, and team leaders. When
laced with corporate management
principles & tools and the knowledge
of the market economy, they transform
themselves into rightful aspirants for
medium to top management positions
in the corporate world. While teaching
the course Economic Analysis and
Policy, it had become abundantly clear
to me that these men and women have
the abilities, drive, and the passion to be
successful corporate warriors. I wish
them the very best.”

“The participants of AFP15 course were
provided opportunities to take charge
and lead complex organizations as a part
of the module on Strategic Management.
They took charge of diverse and complex
situations ranging from managing
entrepreneurial ventures to examining
the implications of innovations in
large,
established
multinational
companies. Their active involvement
in case comprehension, analysis and
decision making in these situations
has enabled them to comprehend the
nuances of alternative approaches
to formulation and implementation
of strategies in changing contexts.
They have become adept in sizing up
strategic situations, identifying decision
questions and developing complete,
concrete and consistent solutions. This
unique capability would enable them to
contribute meaningfully and strengthen
the performance of the organizations
they would be a part of. It would also
help them to promote entrepreneurial
ventures independently and manage
them successfully. I wish them all the
best in their careers.”
Prof. Mukund R. Dixit

AFP batch has been conceptualized & designed in a very apt
manner to accommodate industry requirements at a leadership
role & understanding the body of experience which Armed Forces
people bring on board.
The complete 6 months residential course is equivalent to any other
long term course at IIM institutes & the efforts endeavored by
IIMA faculty to generate the right blend of Attitude & Ability with
ingrained business sense is flawless.
The overall curriculum envisage each and every dimension of
business & associated timely decision making capacity to extract
maximum & optimal results. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience
of learning, unlearning & relearning aspects through a rational &
empirical process.

The classroom sessions, management games & other activities
did help in overall understanding of business requirements and
the Corporate world, which each one of us in the AFP batch were
venturing into. Six months course in Business Management at
IIMA provided the much needed grooming and transformation
to enable my smooth transition from Armed Forces to Corporate
environment at a comfortable level, to be recognized in the ‘Cyber
Security’ arena within the industry.

The AFP course is well structured to complement the on-field
leadership and managerial experiences of an Armed Forces Officer.
The well conceived syllabus along with world class faculty & facility
and IIMA’s time tested case study methodology of teaching, enabled
me to prepare well for the transition from the Armed Forces to the
Corporate sector. The intense class room discussions with peers
from diverse experiences, facilitated by an outstanding faculty,
widened my outlook and perspective to view problems in a more
holistic manner. The learnings were immensely helpful in adapting
to the Corporate sector.

AFP is a really good platform to orient the participants towards real
time business problems and a systematic approach to solve them. The
participants of the course have a very diverse and rich experience
combined with qualities of a Military Leader. The faculty at IIMA has
no parallel and I found the course very helpful in my transition from
an Armed Forces Officer to Corporate leader.
The rigorous curriculum planned at IIMA reorients and
prepares the transitioning Armed Forces Officers to the
challenges they are going to face once they join various business
organisations. The world class faculty and the exposure during
the stay at IIMA is unmatched.

The AFP course is a boon to Armed Forces Officers who are looking
to make a transition from the Armed Forces to the Corporate
world. It opens up our eyes to the real world and makes us aware of
the tremendous opportunities where we can share our expertise in
the Corporate scenarios. Thanks to the well structured course and
various case studies of IIMA, we had an idea of what to expect in
the Board rooms.
