Phone 9388 7844 Fax 9388 7866 Sales [email protected] The redevelopment of Claremont Oval has forced Claremont to take on a team other than East Fremantle at East Fremantle Oval for the first time in the Tigers history. Last weekend the Tigers moved their offices from Claremont Oval to Claremont Showgrounds as the $45million regeneration of their existing home takes place over the next two years. Shifting their home games across to the Showgrounds was the logical choice for the Tigers who played all of their home games in 1926, their first year in the WAFL playing as ClaremontCottesloe, at the Showgrounds before taking WAFL to Claremont Oval for the first time on April 30 1927 – when the Tigers ironically took on (and lost to) East Fremantle. However, due to the work needed on the playing surface at the Showgrounds following the recent Caravan and Camping Show, the Tigers have had to take their Round 3 clash down the highway to Shark Park. It’s a different story for their Round 3 opponents Subiaco though – who played all of their home games in 1906 at East Fremantle Oval, North Fremantle Oval or Fremantle Oval. Only five grounds were used in 1906 – those Fremantle grounds previously mentioned as well as the WACA and Midland Junction Oval. In Round 11, for example, Perth played North Fremantle at the WACA, Midland Junction played West Perth at Midland Oval and East Fremantle and South Fremantle were at Fremantle Oval. That only left East Fremantle Oval or North Fremantle Oval available to play on. In 1906 East Fremantle Oval was not yet East Fremantle’s home ground – they were based at Fremantle Oval. Season 1906 was the only year prior to 1953 that league football was played at East Fremantle Oval. Back to season 2014 and while the Tigers have a 1-1 record so far, the Lions remain unbeaten. They have accounted for both Fremantle sides -- South (at home at Medibank Stadium) and East (away in Geraldton). The Lions league side didn’t spend one week in the top four last season. Two weeks into season 2014 and they are sitting pretty on top of the ladder after their two straight wins. “It’s been great for our group that has a lot of young guys in it to get some confidence up this early in the season,” said second-year Lions coach Jarrad Schofield. “Things can change quickly and we know that but for us we’re really pleased with how the new recruits have integrated into the side and blended well with those young guys like Hayden Kennedy, Dylan Elliot, Justin Joyce and Chris Deluca.” Those new recruits include Subiaco premiership player Shaun Hildebrandt who has returned to the Lions den from Swan Districts and new captain Kyal Horsley who has come back from two seasons with the Gold Coast. Horsley is on the comeback trail from a knee reconstruction suffered last season. The 26-year-old’s last game was the 2011 losing grand final for the Lions against Claremont and he could return this week. “We’ve been giving him as much time to get back as possible. He’s been in full training for the past four weeks and now we just need “ “ “We’d be mad not to try to take advantage of the fact that it’s neutral ground,” Jarrad Schofield. Subiaco coach Jarrad Schofield to decide if we’ll bring him straight into the league side or give him a run in the reserves,” Schofield said. “It’s a good selection headache to have.” Horsley was drafted by Gold Coast with the second pick in the 2012 Rookie Draft and made his debut for the club in Round 5, 2012. He was delisted by the club at the end of the 2013 season, after 14 games. As for playing the Tigers at a neutral ground this week, Schofield said he has certainly made mention of it. “We’d be mad not to try to take advantage of the fact that it’s neutral ground,” Schofield said. “I’ve told the boys it makes it a 50-50 game for both clubs and we have to make the most of it.” The only six league games at East Fremantle Oval not involving East Fremantle: • Monday, June 4, 1906 – West Perth 8.9 (57) d Subiaco 6.9 (45) • Saturday, June 16, 1906 – South Fremantle 13.10 (88) d Subiaco 6.10 (46) • Saturday, June 23, 1906 – Midland Junction 4.13 (37) d Subiaco 5.3 (32) • Saturday, June 30, 1906 – South Fremantle 12.8 (80) d East Perth 3.4 (22) • Saturday, July 14, 1906 – East Perth 3.12 (30) d Subiaco 4.2 (26) • Saturday, August 11, 1906 – North Fremantle 11.9 (75) d Subiaco 2.3 (15) * Special thanks to WAFL historian Steve Davies for the information about WAFL grounds. 5 We’ve become the most popular brick and paving brand because we’re better, not older. So far this year, I’ve shown you a couple of great little discoveries from the early part of last century, both of which were found over the summer. But I’m not done just yet. During my summer hunt, I found a couple of other little-known items from the 1920s, one of which I had never even heard of before. I will feature one of them in this column next week, but the other was a fantastic book called “Caricatures of the State Footballers” which must be from the mid-late 1920s given the players who feature. The plain-looking 24-page book, printed by Perth firm The Colortype Press Limited, depicts caricatures of 17 players, league secretary Billy Orr and State coaches “Nugget” Gepp and Phil Matson. For the record, the players featured were: Hugh “Bonnie” Campbell (EP), Jackie Guhl (EP), Charlie Mitchell (EP), William “Digger” Thomas (EP), Dave Woods (EF), Val Sparrow (EP), Reginald “Nashy” Brentnall (EP), Albert Watts (P), Jim Craig (WP), Eric “Snowy” Erickson (P), Leo McComish (P), George “Staunch” Owens (EP), Tom Outridge (S), Carlisle “Bub” Jarvis (EF), “Paddy” Hebbard (EP), Ted Flemming (WP) and Larry “Plum” Duffy (EP). Those players never played a game together, so it seems to be a composition of State players between about 1925 and 1929. Curiously, the artist is not named. However, I suspect he may have been an East Perth supporter given there were nine Royals among the 17 players featured. While East Perth was a very strong team in the late 1920s, winning premierships in 1926 and 1927, they never supplied half the State team. And Charlie Mitchell never played for WA, but featured in the book anyway. Can anyone shed any light on the name of the mystery artist? Over the first two weeks of the WAFL season, I’ve updated readers on some of the sale prices achieved for WAFL collectables over summer. But I’m not even close to finishing that list. One of the rarer types of WAFL collectables is the service station decals/transfers that were so popular back in the 1960s.I suspect most of them ended their lives on car windows or bedroom mirrors and those that survive today are highly sought after by collectors. So, when some decals appeared for auction in summer that dated to the early-mid 1950s, there was no shortage of bidders. The Mobilgas decals for East Fremantle, West Perth and Claremont sold for between $150 and $200 each, though the seller had multiple copies and the prices fell back when the others were auctioned off later. Another lot of decals hit the private market over summer and also sold for a nice price. The seller, whose father had kept the 21 Esso decals from the mid-60s, sold the lot for $850. There were also a couple of mirrors that changed hands. The most interesting one was a late 60s-early 70s West Perth mirror, which turned up in Ballarat at a garage sale. The lucky Victoria-based buyer paid about $50 for the rare mirror and found a buyer willing to pay several times that amount to bring the mirror back to Perth. A 1982 Subiaco mirror turned up at an East Fremantle antique shop for $125, while a 1982 East Fremantle mirror sold for $180 in Australind. And, just last week, a 1960s Peters Ice Cream tin bearing the Subiaco colours sold for just over $200. It was the most I had seen paid for one of these rare tins, though it was in much better condition than the heavily rusted Perth tin that sold for just under $100 in 2012. Keep an eye out for more details from the summer sales in next week’s WAFL Collectables. Finally for this week, the requests for help from readers have started to flow in for 2014. Shane is looking for a bottle of Stephen Michael Sandover Medal port from 1981, several collectors are looking for mirrors from any of the five sets of WAFL mirrors produced between the late 60s and mid 80s and Jim is looking for East Perth club membership badges. Meanwhile, I wonder if anyone can help me fill the holes in my collection of WAFL club annual reports? To have them all back to 1990, I’m after Claremont (1990, 1994, 1995, 2003 and 2008-2013 inclusive), East Fremantle (2009), East Perth (1992, 2000, 2010 and 2013), Perth (2008 and 2012), South Fremantle (1990 and 1991), Subiaco (2010-2013 inclusive) and Swan Districts (2012 and 2013). But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine— the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit the Frog—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon, and Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard. “It’s an old-style caper movie,” said director James Bobin (Disney’s The Muppets, Flight of the Conchords). “Muppet movies often have very classic movie tropes, and the evil doppelgänger—a bad-guy, evil-frog, Kermit-the-Frog look-alike—seemed like such a fun premise for the Muppets’ next film.” Muppets Most Wanted opens on April 7. DIVERGENT (ENTERTAINMENT ONE) Divergent is a thrilling action-adventure film set in a world where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy by a faction leader (Kate Winslet) to destroy all Divergents, Tris must learn to trust in the mysterious Four (Theo James) and together they must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late. Based on the best-selling novel by Veronica Roth. The extremely popular young adult novel Divergent was written by first time author Veronica Roth and has topped the New York Times Bestsellers list since being published in May of 2011 by Katherine Tegen Books/HarperCollins Publishers. The highly-anticipated feature film adaptation of Divergent stars Golden Globe nominated Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ashley Judd, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Tony Goldwyn, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Christian Madsen, Amy Newbold, and Academy Award winner Kate Winslet. Too often under the former AFL star’s tenure have South Fremantle played impressive football in patches only to lack the cohesion over 100 minutes to claim victory. Again in 2014 the Bulldogs have got plenty of the ball. Haiden Schloithe, Ryan Cook, Ashton Hams and even youngster Marlon Pickett have been notching a wealth of possessions. But South Fremantle has failed to capitalise and its inability to maintain pressure after half-time has resulted in two disappointing losses to start the season. Craig White’s rebounding efforts across half-back will the crucial in steering the Bulldogs on the right path and trouble an East Perth team still trying to blend its local and AFL players. The Royals’ willingness to push West Coast squad member Scott Lycett as the No.1 ruckman has put arguably the best player in the competition, Paul Johnson, into a background role and he hasn’t had his usual influence on the matches. Jarrod Oakley-Nicholls has enjoyed the alignment so far and been one of the local Royals whose game has lifted with the new surroundings. CLAREMONT V SUBIACO Sure Claremont has lost a lot of premiership players over the past two seasons. But too much time has been spent looking at the talent that has exited rather than keeping an eye on that still on the Tigers’ list. And there are still plenty of key players that can make Claremont a force this year. The return of Tom Ledger has been a welcome boost to complement the performances of Andrew Foster, Luke Blackwell, Jake Murphy and Ryan Neates. John Williams provides a target in attack while Mark Seaby remains a potent weapon on the ball. However, Subiaco has been the surprise packet in the first two rounds with wins over East Fremantle and South Fremantle. The Lions’ pre-season recruiting has paid off handsomely. Former West Perth big man Frank Stockley has given the team a boost in the ruck, ExSwan Districts defender Wayde Twomey’s rebounding skills off half-back have been damaging while Shaun Hildebrandt has slotted in like he never left the club for Steel Blue Oval. Rhys Waters’ ability to keep the scoreboard ticking over – he has an equal league leading seven goals – has been something the Lions have gladly welcomed. SWAN DISTRICTS V PEEL At least Greg Harding will have a better feel of his Swan Districts line-up after two rounds, regardless of the results. The black and whites’ first assignment was against the West Coast-bolstered East Perth. Their second is versus the Fremantleladen Peel. However, Harding liked what he saw in the club’s season opener even if it was a loss to the Royals. His team performed valiantly. Adam Faulkner and Aaron Elari might be pint-sized in stature but they pack a big punch through midfield for Swans. Graham Jetta remains an efficient avenue from defence and Blake Boekhorst knows where the goals are. The Thunder’s depth will be tested in this match because of the absence of some injured Dockers. So it will be up to Kristin Thornton, Kelvin Lawrence and James Hawksley to lift the younger Peel players and help them blend into the vastly-rebuilt team. ::Craig White ::Steven Browne WEST PERTH V PERTH At round three it might be bit early to say there is pressure on the West Perth match committee. But there are a few raised eyebrows after two consecutive losses to open the Falcons’ premiership defence. The reasons for the West Perth machine failing to hit top gear are a little tough to identify. The Falcons had the ball almost 50 times more than Claremont in round two yet were dominated by the Tigers in the second half. There can be no doubting the work rate of Shane Nelson, Steven Browne and Rohan Kerr but the inability of West Perth to work as a team has been worrying. Anthony Tsalikis has provided some inspiration for the Falcons. Not only has he been a reliable creator in attack but his defensive pressure has helped his team lock the ball in the forward line. Now they need to capitalise on that effort. Perth’s confidence is i sky-high after two wins on the trot w and Dene White’s a leadership has been a l big b reason behind the successes. s Mitch Leyendekkers has emerged as a h quality WAFL ruckman, q Callum Collard is C having great effect h as a a small forward while Gerald Ugle w has h become a strong carrier of the ball into c attack. a The youngsters’ efforts give the e Demons great hope for D the t rest of the season. WA Country Football League General Manager Joe Georgiades said each league determined the best time to commence its fixtures. “It is best for each League to decide on a start date that fits in best with the local community as they all have different factors to consider,” he said. “A late Easter holiday this year has seen a few leagues push their starting dates back to late April.” Mr Georgiades has travelled extensively throughout the State in the lead up to the 2014 season to engage with country leagues and discuss the challenges facing senior football in regional WA. “None of our 25 Leagues are immune from their own set of unique issues,” Georgiades said. “Country football is very lucky to have great levels of community interest and fantastic volunteers in each region administering competitions. Without them games simply couldn’t go ahead. Their contribution is absolutely crucial.” The WA Country Football league will also celebrate the 50th year of the Landmark Country Championships in 2014 by selecting a Team of 50 Years of Country Week, which will be announced at a dinner presentation on April 4. The Landmark Championships will again be the pinnacle event for country football in 2014, with large numbers again expected to descend on Perth in mid-July. Rodriguez Shield “The Landmark Carnival has a great history of bringing country people together, so we are looking forward to a big year of celebration and looking back over the history of carnivals past,” Mr Georgiades said. Country Football included 51,479 participants in 2013, which was 32% of WA’s total football participation of 161,429, making football WA’s number one participation sport. By region this included: • South West: 13,217 participants (8.2% of WA participation) • Pilbara: 6,901 participants (4.3% of WA participation) • Midlands: 6,351 participants (3.9% of WA participation) • Goldfields: 6,006 participants (3.7% of WA participation) • Kimberley: 5,777 participants (3.6% of WA participation) • Great Southern: 4,949 participants (3.1% of WA participation) • Midwest: 4,556 participants (2.8% of WA participation) • Wheatbelt: 3,822 participants (2.4% of WA participation) For links to League fixtures head to: http://www.wafootball.com.au/competitions/ wacfl/fixtures-and-results Leading goalkicker award The Rodriguez Shield is awarded to the most consistent WAFL club of the season, with points allocated across all three grades. Recent announcements regarding changes to junior football rules do not specifically apply to Western Australia. The national junior match policy is adhered to and implemented by the West Australian Football Commission as the governing body of football in the State, however, rule changes announced recently by the AFL for leagues in Victoria have been in place in Western Australia for a decade. In Western Australia, Year 6 and under age groups have not tackled or scored during the last 10 years. These modified rules have resulted in unprecedented growth, with Auskick almost doubling in numbers from 15,000 to 29,436 since 2005 and junior participation growing by approximately 6000 participants to 24,200 in the same timeframe. Research conducted as part of a national junior match policy review indicated the primary reason for junior participation was to have fun with friends. It has also been proven to have a positive effect on game day environments, with less focus from players, coaches and parents on winning. Rules have been modified in Western Australia this year for the Year 7 age group to include scoring and tackle during matches. This change has been made following further research and feedback from stakeholders over a two-year period to align the Year 7 age group with national standards. This change also aligns with the new high school starting age set to be implemented across Western Australia by the Education Department. Lic 9TA 1121 26 ::Amateurs Football By Sophie James WAAF L welcomes Roosters and Rangers In its 93rd year, the West Australian Amateur Football League (WAAFL) will welcome two new clubs to the competition, increasing the number of competing clubs to 67. Season 2014 WAAFL newcomers, the Cottesloe Roosters and the Hills Rangers, are looking forward to making their mark on the game. Cottesloe will field teams in C4 and C4 Reserves, while the Rangers have entered a Colts team into the West Coast Colts division. Additions to both the senior and colts competitions bring the total number of teams to 234 in 2014. Cottesloe Roosters AFC Vice President Rebecca Johnston said the club was excited to join the WAAFL and that the Roosters had big plans in place. “The introduction of the Cottesloe Roosters to the competition gives our players and members a chance to be part of new traditions and a new generation of leadership,” Johnston said. Earlier this year the Roosters announced that former West Coast Eagles premiership player Andrew Embley was the Club’s Director of Football, and that Premier Colin Barnett was the Club Patron. The Roosters will play their home matches out of Cottesloe Oval, overlooking the ocean just above Cottesloe beach, and will wear blue and red jumpers. Season 2014 will be met with a great sense of optimism for the Hills Rangers Football who will embrace an orange, grey and white jumper design. Based out of the Mundaring Recreation Centre, the Rangers are looking forward to playing their first season in WA’s largest amateur competition. The Hills Rangers Club was formed through a merger of Darlington/Parkerville Warriors JFC and Eastern Hills Hawks JFC, in what has been labelled as an exciting step in the evolution of football in the Shire of Mundaring. Also participating in the WAAFL this season is Coolbinia, West Perth’s newly founded Integrated Football team. After much work during the off season, Integrated Football Co-ordinator Greg Gilbee was pleased to announce that the program would expand to a seven team competition. Gilbee explained that planning for Integrated has long been a dream for the Falcons at Yokine, and that Coolbinia West Perth Club President Bob Scherini was the driving force behind their Integrated Football introduction. “Scherini has put together a great support team, one that has successfully introduced many new players to the club,” Gilbee stated. A highly-anticipated Round 1 of the 2014 season kicks off next Saturday with full fixtures available online at www.waafl.com.au, or through our new app available through the Apple App store or Google. For three seasons during WW2 (1942-1944), the WAFL competition was restricted to players aged less than 18 years as at October 1, 1942. Of the 587 players known to have debuted in this period, WAFC historians are missing a date of birth (and often other details) for 149 players. Each week the Football Budget will list the playing records for eight of the players for whom birth and other details are sought. These include: Donald Edwin ANGUS (East Perth 1942, 1945-50, 15 games) – died 1998 Albert Raymond CHERNOFF (Subiaco 1942-44, 21 games) – died 1996 Bruce Malcolm DOIG (Swan Districts 1944, 1947, 24 games) – died 1948 Robin Maxwell GORDON (Perth 1944, 4 games) Alex? JEFFERY (Perth 1942, 8 games) William Francis MALONEY (South Fremantle 1943-44, 19 games) – died 1988 W. MURRAY (West Perth 1944, 6 games) Robert ROSE (Claremont 1943-44, 17 games) Any information that could help establish contact with or lead to full particulars being obtained on these players would be welcomed by WAFL historian Greg Wardell-Johnson ([email protected]. au) or Judy Chalmers (9381 5599) at the WA Football Commission. ::Results Round 2, 2014 LEAGUE SOUTH FREMANTLE.............................. 8.2 12.6 14.9 18.10 (118) PERTH .................................................... 2.1 8.4 13.6 19.9 (123) GOALS: SF -- Pickett, Martinez 3; Guglielmana, Saunders 2; Sokol, White, Schloithe, Kelly, Verrier, Cook, Bewick, Hams.
