Volume 211 Banned Books Week September 22 – September 28 Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Stop by the library and check out our display of banned books. Halloween Costume Drive We are collecting new and used (in good condition) Halloween costumes. With your help, every child can have a Halloween costume. All costumes will be distributed to children through various Long Island charitable organizations. Last day for drop off is Friday, October 18th. Magic of Spices Tuesday, September 24 7-9pm Evelyn Banker is a master chef, food writer and cooking teacher. Her specialty is the use of spices, herbs and grains in quick, easy, fresh and delicious meals that anyone can prepare. She will make sprout salad, soup and tea, explain how every dish is made and describe the nutritional value of all the ingredients she uses - with a special emphasis on the remarkable qualities of turmeric. She will also display and discuss her book, which will be available for purchase. Thank You to all Adult Summer Reading Club Members! 125 readers participated in the Adult Summer Reading Club, Celebrate Long Island, and read over 600 books. This popular entertainer has a repertoire of over 400 songs that cover many different genres of music, but his specialty is Neapolitan songs – and he sings them well! Second Best: The World’s Greatest Lesser-Known Travel Destinations Tuesday, October 22 7 pm This presentation focuses on less-famous but must-see places to visit across the globe. It includes professional-quality photos, a brief overview of each destination and why it’s worth visiting. Covering seven locations across all seven continents, attendees will benefit from the practical logistics of getting there and getting around, and receive a visual treat in exploring the hidden gems of the travel industry. Name that Tune- for Adults Thursday, October 3 7-9pm Think you know it all when it comes to music? In this program, test your knowledge of music from the 1950’s to the present. Advice for Snowbirds: Maintaining Dual-Residency in NY and Florida Tuesday, October 8 7-9pm Attorneys Bruce and Justin Meyer will discuss topics such as the Florida Homestead Acts versus the STAR Exemptions, estate planning considerations, tax benefits and considerations in both states, probate concerns, living trusts and residency audits. Some information will also be applicable to those who live in North Carolina or Arizona in the winter. A question and answer period will follow this presentation. Peacock Feather Plate Thursday, October 10 6:30 – 8pm $5 fee Join Artist Shirley Ruby to learn the art of decoupage. Use a variety of specialty papers, a peacock feather and a large square glass platter to create a stunning work of art to display or use. Iridescent paint around the rim will tie it all together. Researching Your Italian Ancestors Tuesday, October 29 7:30-8:45pm This lecture will outline the unique advantages of Italian genealogical research and discuss the history and traditions affecting Italian genealogy. Using both American and Italian records, the instructor will guide you through the methodology of tracing your Italian lineage. Tech Corner Zinio, Freegal, & IndieFlix Tuesday September 10 7pm Join us for this informative program on these new, FREE online programs the West Islip Library has to offer. Zinio offers the top 50 digital magazines that can be downloaded and read; Freegal allows a patron to download 3 songs per week; and IndieFlix is an online film database that allows patrons to watch full length independent films. All of these programs can be accessed on a computer or mobile device. Computer Kindergarten Saturdays September 21 & 28 10am-12 noon $5.00 per person due at registration. A slow-paced, user-friendly workshop ideal for first-time computer users. Using Windows computers, this class covers the basics that even the most inexperienced user will understand. We will cover turning the computer on, the Windows desktop, using the mouse, opening programs, understanding Windows elements, inputting text, saving a file and turning the computer off.
