Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Stop by the
library and check out our display of banned
books.
Halloween Costume Drive
We are collecting new and used (in good condition) Halloween costumes. With your help,
every child can have a Halloween costume.
All costumes will be distributed to children
through various Long Island charitable organizations. Last day for drop off is Friday,
October 18th.
Magic of Spices
Tuesday, September 24

Evelyn Banker is a master chef, food writer
and cooking teacher. Her specialty is the use
of spices, herbs and grains in quick, easy, fresh
and delicious meals that anyone can prepare.
She will make sprout salad, soup and tea, explain how every dish is made and describe
the nutritional value of all the ingredients she
uses - with a special emphasis on the remarkable qualities of turmeric. She will also display
and discuss her book, which will be available
for purchase.

Join Artist Shirley Ruby to learn the art of decoupage. Use a variety of
specialty papers, a peacock feather and a large square glass platter to

top 50 digital magazines that can be downloaded and read; Freegal allows a patron

Summer Reading Club 2013 Update
Congratulations to all our Summer Reading Club and Read-to-Me Club
members! Approximately 700 children, grades 1-6, joined the West Islip Library Summer Reading Club. Nearly 5,000 books
were read in total! Over 200 reading logs were given out to Read-to-Me children, ages 2½ to Kindergarten. The Children’s
Department wishes to thank all of our hard-working Book Buddies for making our 2013 Summer Reading Club a great success. Thank you for your dedication and enthusiasm!
Book Buddies: Be sure to pick up your volunteer certificate/hours if you haven’t done so already.

Entries must be baked at home. We cannot accept entries that are not baked, such as pudding
‘dirt cups’ or whipped cream items that require
refrigeration. Each Bake-Off participant will receive a prize ribbon. First place winners in each
category will receive a special cookbook prize.

News from the Friends of the
West Islip Public Library
The Friends of the Library are requesting donations
of adults’ and children’s hardcover and paperback
books, as well as costume jewelry and toys, in good
condition, to sell at the Library table at the West
Islip Country Fair on Sunday, September 22, 2013.
Sales of these items benefit your library.
The next quarterly meeting of the Friends will be
held on Wednesday, September 11, 1:30-3:30pm.

Art Exhibits at the Library
September:
Near and Far by John DeGuardi - An exhibit of landscape
paintings in various mediums - influenced by experiences in
Europe and the United States - in the Gallery Hall.
Peter Tejera will display his photographs of still lifes, etc. in the Darline L. Carter Room.
West Islip Girl Scouts Silver Award Troop 546 will mount a
display in the Entrance Foyer Case.
October:
Emily and JoAnn Kellner will display photographs taken
during their travels in China, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands,
etc. in the Gallery Hall.
