The Morning Star, Friday November 16 edition, by Jennifer Smith, Morning Star Staff. Vernon has become a hot spot for snowmobilers across the Interior gearing up for the season. Special points of interest: SNOW SHOW 2007 KIDS’ RIDE. 2007 Message from President Gord. Okanagan Highlands Snowmobile Trail Project (Kelowna Snowmobile Club) RIDE BC The annual Snow Show at the Best Western Vernon Lodge packed an estimated 500 people into its three banquet rooms last Friday, breaking all previous attendance records. “It’s the best one we’ve ever had. We had the room bursting at the seams,” said Dianne Evans, a director with the Vernon Snowmobile Club. “It could barely hold everyone.” The annual event, co-hosted for many years by the Vernon Club and the Lumby/Mable Lake Snowmobile Club, began as a simple get-together to facilitate membership renewals, anhd has grown exponentially over the years. Snowmobile enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the Snow Show which has evolved into a social event that the whole family can enjoy. “The event is gaining its own momentum as its reputation grows throughout the Interior. This past week saw two new entities approach us, …… CONTINUED ON PAGE 4 UPCOMING CLUB MEETINGS: 4th Thursday of each month (no meeting in December) EVERYONE WELCOME! We hook up with 15-20 children through the Salvation Army, and take them up to the snowmobile trails for a day of fun. Anyone that could volunteer a few hours would be much appreciated. We still have need of 2-up sleds (liability insurance restricts us to 2-ups only). If you are able to supply and drive one on that day, please call my wife (Dianne) or me at 546-0980. We’re in the planning stages for our LADIES’ RIDE….please let us know your ideas! As our next newsletter will not be issued until January, I’d like to take this time to wish you and yours a wonderful Christmas and prosperous new year. Hope to see you on the 8th! s n a v E Gord How smart is Your Right Foot ? Just try this. It is from an orthopaedic surgeon.. This will boggle your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't. It's pre-programmed in your brain! 1. While sitting where you are at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles. 2. Now, while doing this, draw the number '6' in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction. I told you so!!! And there's nothing you can do about it! You & I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you've not already done so. VERNON SNOWMOBILE ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER 2007/08—ISSUE 2 PAGE 3 KELOWNA SNOWMOBILECLUB— TRAIL DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL The following is an excerpt from a document prepared by the Kelowna Snowmobile Club regarding a proposal they are putting forth to expand their trail system. If you would like a complete copy of this proposal, please request one from Dianne Evans. Overview: The intention of this document is to provide an indication of the goals of the Kelowna Snowmobile Club’s trail development plans in the highlands east of Lake Okanagan. Existing Trails and Management agreements: Presently, under agreement with the BC Parks and Ministry of Tourism, the club manages an area that encompasses Graystokes Park with trails maintained and developed within the park and the surrounding area. The main access points to the Graystokes Snowmobile Area are from the Bug Forest Road and the 201 Forest Road. The club (with over 500 active members) grooms trails from the vicinity of the Home Lake on the Harris Creek Forest Rd in the north to the Big White Ski resort in the south as well as selected trails in the Idabel Lake area. The present management agreement with MTSA includes the section of main trail (Graystoke Road) from the Main Parking Lot on the Bug Forest Road to the Main Chalet. An extension to that agreement is nearing completion that would embrace the main trails generally within the area of Little White Mountain, Idabel Lake, McCulloch Station and Greyback Lake, including the Kettle Valley Railway grade from the edge of Myra Bellvue Park towards Beaverdel. Objective: To develop a managed snowmobile trail system that runs the length of the Okanagan Highlands from the South Okanagan above Penticton to Sicamous; with accompanying links to existing snowmobile areas such as Scaia Mountain / Galloping Hills area, Silver Star Mountain, and Hunters Range. The objective will be to provide a main trail corridor that is built and maintained to a standard that would allow visiting riders to navigate from one end of the system to the other without a local guide. PROPOSED OKANAGAN HIGHLANDS SNOWMOBILE ROUTE The goal to link these areas with trails is realistic. The area is predominantly crown land with a network of existing forest roads and high annual snowfall. The only real obstacles in the area are three Ministry of Highways road crossing. Most of the route is unplowed for the winter season allowing easy travel with very little interaction with any other The trail will connect existing networks in the Sicamous area, through the Park/Nelson area outdoor activity. and then onto the Graystokes and McCulloch areas. The route itself has been ridden any number of times over the years but the most recent organized ride to travel the entire route was the BCSF Rendezvous Ride in 2004. That group started out on their snowmobiles at the 201 (OK Falls Forest Road) in the area of Greyback Lake and rode to Highway 1 near 3 Valley Gap on their first day of a seven day snowmobile trip to Prince George. The trail will be managed and maintained by a regional trail society that would be made up of representatives of the eight Okanagan Valley and Sicamous area snowmobile clubs. VERNON SNOWMOBILE ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER 2007/08—ISSUE 2 PAGE 4 SNOW SHOW CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 ….eager to be included in next year’s Snow Show,” said Gord Evans, president of the Vernon Club. “We’ve already started planning for next year’s event, which will again be held on the Friday evening of the November long weekend.” The event showcases the newest sleds and gear on the market, but also provides local clubs a venue to attract membership. There are annual events of this nature, but on a much larger scale, held in Abbotsford and Prince George. But the Vernon event is the only one of its type in the Interior. EAGLE VALLEY SNOWMOBILE CLUB With that in mind, and responding to feedback from the public to do so, the Vernon Club decided to strive towards making the event even bigger and better over a period of years, with the ambitious goal of one day reaching the point where it can be renamed the North Okanagan or Interior Snow Show. Club displays: Revelstoke n the left, Eagle Valley on As in past years, Arctic Cat, Polaris, Ski Doo and Yamaha had impressive displays of their exciting 2008 models. This year, however, for the first time, the event was expanded to include several other regional snowmobile clubs (Revelstoke, Eagle Valley, Hunters Range, and Kelowna) who set up displays to promote and show off their snowmobiling areas. Valhalla Pure Outfitters and Klim Aggressive Sled Wear displayed and sold winter gear and sledding accessories. Also in attendance, in their capacities of support of the sport of snowmobiling were the British Columbia Snowmobile Federation, Capri Insurance, and the Vernon Search and Rescue.
