Fishing and hunting were plentiful along the new river and there is evidence that a variety of tribes passed through the area. Today, a native american marker can be found in bisset park to honor that heritage and a native american heritage festival (pow wow) is held annually to recognize the importance of this history. Originally known as a teacher’s college for women, Radford University was founded in 1910. It is celebrated for its caring faculty and intimate learning atmosphere. The university is currently undergoing extensive renovations of its curriculum and facilities. The Virginia & Tennessee Railroad first came through the region in the 1850’s, sparking the development of a depot and town known as Central. Following the creation of the Norfolk & Western Railroad in 1881, the region and town experienced a major boom that led to the chartering of the City of Radford in 1892. Two centuries ago, an enterprising settler built a tavern on the Stagecoach Route (also known as the Wilderness Road). The tavern, named Lovely Mount, was the beginning of Radford.
