OTHER NEWS
“Look on every exit as being an entrance somewhere else”
from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, by Tom Stoppard
Although my university major was in Physics, and for many years now I have taught mainly Geology, I have always
loved literature. I enjoyed the bits of English at school where we studied novels, plays poetry. I was never much of a
writer (as you may tell from this Bulletin piece), but I enjoyed the reading, the discussion, the analysis. I have
maintained this love over the years that have followed. One of my favourite playwrights is Tom Stoppard. I’ve used
some lines from his plays to tie some of the following disparate ideas together.
My farewell notice on the Collegians Facebook page created quite a stir, with lots of very amazing comments and posts.
A comment that really hit home was made by one of our past captains, who reminded me of the address I gave for their
graduation. A quote from Tom Stoppard had always held a lot of meaning for me, and apparently left a lasting
impression with them too. In my address I talked about moving on, of making the most of opportunities, of enjoying the
moment and not being lost in the past.
We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show
for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our
eyes watered.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, by Tom Stoppard
All of us move on. I’m a bit scared by the prospect of moving on after so long at Radford. I’m also really excited by the
opportunities this provides. I begin to see again a little of life through the eyes of our students, who spend so much of
their early years “moving on”. In fact, the idea that students went through distinct of stages of development was why we
structured the College around four sub-schools. A series of events to mark milestones became a reality. We celebrated
success and enjoyed the challenges. I would like to thank all the students (past and present) and all the parents with
whom I have worked, especially in my more recent role as Head of High School. I have enjoyed walking with you past
those milestones. I am confident that the new College structure in 2015 will continue to mark special events and the
end of stages.
We do have to be careful. My mate Tom again provides the words of wisdom:
Because children grow up, we think a child’s purpose is to grow up. But a child’s purpose is
to be a child. Nature doesn’t disdain what lives only for a day. It pours the whole of itself into
the each moment.
The Coast of Utopia, by Tom Stoppard
We must also enjoy our kids for who they are now. Don’t look for them to change too quickly. They will do this too fast anyway.
To finish up, I would like to talk about a past student who has grasped with both hands the opportunities of moving on. Over the last holidays I had the privilege of travelling
with 21 wonderful Year 11 and 12 students through South East Asia.
Radford students at the Luang Probang Buddhist Temple in Laos, during the mid-year break.
One night in the Luang Probang night markets, we came across two Radford Collegians. The encounter was random, but a wonderful chance to catch up. One of these
students was Anna Brooks who finished Year 12 last year. After the end-of-year celebrations, Anna had hunted for work, and took a while to find a job. She worked for five
months in a café and saved for her trip overseas. She spent a month in East Timor following up on contacts made during her school trip there in 2012. Since then she
travelled through South East Asia, spending a month in Laos. When we caught up, she was working with victims of landmine accidents, and has written a wonderful story to
highlight this cause. Her Phong Saven story is attached to this link. Read it, and if it moves you like it did me, please consider donating to the cause. The donation
details and link are at the end of her story.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.

FROM THE REGISTRAR
Mrs Sally Mordike
Notice of Withdrawal from Radford
Families wishing to withdraw a student from the College are reminded that a letter to the Principal is required, giving at least one term's notice to avoid any financial penalty.
This letter needs to be signed by all/both the original signatories to the student's enrolment.
If your child is leaving the College at the end of 2014, please ensure the letter of withdrawal is received by the Principal’s office by 26 September 2014. After this date, the
withdrawal penalty of half a term’s fees will apply.
A term’s notification not only helps families avoid the withdrawal penalty, it also means that new families can be offered places at the school in good time.
Please contact the Registrar, Sally Mordike, on 6162 6212 or by e-mail if you require any clarification or advice.
(No notice is required for students who will be leaving the College as Year 12 graduates at the end of the year, but notice IS required for mid-year leavers from Year 12.)

PARENT INFORMATION SESSION
on guiding and support our children in their use of technology
Presenter: Andrew Douch
Date: Monday 8 September
Time: 5.30pm – 6.30pm
Venue: Senior School Lecture Theatre
RSVP: [email protected] by 5 September.
Event flyer
"Now they have the world at their fingertips..."
Andrew Douch is an independent education technology consultant with 22 years classroom experience. Andrew has won numerous
awards for his work with emerging technologies in education, including the Microsoft Worldwide Innovative Teacher of the Year. His
keynote presentations on 21st Century learning, educational change and transformative use of ICT have made Andrew a highly
sought-after conference presenter and facilitator.
In this special presentation Andrew will talk about the world in which our children are growing up, a world very different from the one in which
their parents were raised. The technological advances are exciting and present us with numerous educational opportunities, but they also
raise issues for teachers and parents. How can we as parents make the most of iPads, Notebooks and the Internet while safely side-stepping
the pitfalls?
Andrew will discuss how we can guide and support our children in their use of technology, including practical advice about filtering home
networks and timed access control. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions.
We look forward to seeing you there.

LOTE Review 2014 – we need your input!
Contact: Mathew Irving, Director of Studies Y7-Y10, LOTE Review Project 2014
Throughout this semester, the College will be undertaking a review of Languages Other Than English (LOTE). The purpose of the review is to undertake an investigation of
our current programmes and pedagogies, analyse latest research in this area and assess our capacity to effectively pursue the Languages component of the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, the Australian Curriculum and Engagement with Asia policies.
Over the next 6 months, there will be multiple opportunities for students, staff and parents to engage with the review process including surveys, targeted group
conversations and teacher observations.
To underpin the review process, terms of reference have been put in place to establish the scope of the review process and investigations:
LOTE Review Terms of Reference
1.
To investigate latest research into the advantages of learning Languages Other Than English (LOTE).
2.
To investigate ‘like schools’ and their current practices and Language offerings K-12; this will include both co-educational and IB settings.
3.
To collate statistical analysis of student enrolments in Languages at Radford over the past 7 years and measure student choice against academic
expectations, pedagogy and individual motivation.
4.
To investigate prevailing pedagogies K-12 with the purpose of developing a K-12 Scope and Sequence in the context of the Australian Curriculum
through teacher observation and review of curriculum documentation.
5.
To investigate the staff and parent support of Languages at Radford and cultural understanding of its value.
6.
To review the International Baccalaureate (IB) expectations for Languages, investigate the successes of the JS PYP experience and explore the
College's capacity to introduce Languages as part of the IB Diploma Programme.
7.
To investigate the development and introduction of beginner and continuing Languages at Years 7, 9 and 11 in alignment with current Radford and BSSS
policies.
8.
To investigate possible authentic connections and the strengthening of links beyond the College.
9.
To investigate incentives offered by Universities to students who have studied another language in their senior years.
10.
To review the current LOTE Department’s vision, levels of collaboration in the Junior School and Secondary School, pedagogical alignment K-12 and
staff morale.
We have now reached a stage when we need input from our parents and guardians.
We ask you to undertake a short LOTE Review Survey (https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LOTEReview2014Parents) to provide the College with
your views about Languages.
The survey will be open from 27 August to 10 September. Your participation is greatly appreciated – we would love to hear from you.

2014 RADFORD LOTE SPEECH COMPETITION
Last week on Tuesday the 19th and Thursday the 21st, the LOTE Department ran the 2014 Radford Speech Competition. It was a wonderful event. Items ranged from a
Beyonce song sung in French by some Year 8 girls, through to a conversation about a Camping Trip from Year 10 French students. The Year 9 Chinese students had a
discussion about whether or not "Chess really is a sport". The Japanese Year 9 students, talked about the weather and the Year 10s gave a funny recount of the Japan Trip
from a Japanese Mafia perspective. It was lovely to see parents attending and supporting their children studying languages. Thanks to Mr Birks, who brought some great
Chinese speakers from the Junior school to showcase the language learning in the Junior School. Thanks also goes to Mr Dodd and Ms Melloy for attending and giving out
our prizes on the day. Well done LOTE Department for some wonderful work with students learning Languages.

Within the past month Radford has enjoyed success in two local competitions. On 7 August the top team won the ANU Secondary Schools Chess Championship scoring a
resounding 27 out of max 28 wins. Three of the students, Willis Lo, Fred Litchfield and Yijun Zhang were undefeated. Then on 22 August the top team won the ACT Open
Secondary Schools Chess Final, although very narrowly, from Lyneham High School. Two players, Fred Litchfield and Yijun Zhang were undefeated. Congratulations on both
achievements.

This team will now take part in a special playoff weekend in September with the chance of representing the ACT at the Australian Schools Chess Championships in Adelaide
in December. We wish them well.

Researchers are struggling to keep up with the neurological, psychological and social impact of this generation’s ‘fast and furious’ technology revolution. Unregulated and
poorly managed technology use is negatively influencing the mental health and well-being of our children. The speed of change in hand-held technology continues to outpace
our understanding of its effect on the developing brain. The presenter, Radford psychologist Gayelene Clews, will take a harm-minimisation approach for sensible technology
management amongst teens.
If you are concerned about your child’s technology use, their ability to emotionally regulate frenetic, impulsive, disorganised or
inattentive behaviour, or are concerned about signs of anxiety or depression, this session is for you.

A guide to the outcomes and discussed issues/initiatives of latest P&F Management Committee monthly meetings – 24 July 2014 and 14 August 2014
The P&F Management Committee’s role is to work cooperatively with the College Leadership and Board by providing a forum for discussing educational and general school
matters, putting forward suggestions, and providing feedback on proposed strategies involving things of interest to the parent body. We realize that most parents are busy so
the parent body would possibly benefit from an easily digestible overview of the key issues discussed and addressed at each monthly meeting - via the weekly E-Bulletin.
24 July 2014
The Committee had the pleasure of meeting and welcoming Ms Dearne Marrapodi, Acting Head of Learning and Teaching, who represented Mrs Godfrey.
The Art Show profits amounted to $14,912. Well done Art Show organizing committee!
In consultation with the Principal, the P&F Committee has decided on where this year’s P&F funding would be allocated:
$50,000 – Year 7/8 area common room fit out (see plans in Claire Melloy's report in last week's Bulletin)
$40,000 – provision of shade materials/structures for years 5/6/7/8/9/10
$10,000 – towards the provision of new tables and chairs for the ELC.
The P&F does not have a P&F Logo. Ideally we hope to harmonize the logo with the new rebranding of the College, but at the same time create a logo with
‘personality’. To that end, we are planning to run a competition for the parent and student community. (More detail to follow later in the year).
We are in the process of ordering a portable shade "popup" fo use by the P&F at Radford College community events such as the Fete.
The P&F was major sponsor of the recent and very successful Dirrum Dirrum Conference, an inspiring event about ideas, leadership and change hosted by students
in the first weekend in August http://www.dirrumdirrum.org/
14 August 2014
Year 8 students made a presentation to the P&F about the design and project planning to convert the unused ‘cave’ area below the Library into a Year 7/8 common
room (which will also be a multi-purpose room for uses such as RAS). This was one of the activities which received funding from the P&F in the previous
meeting. Lydia Murray, Caroline Greenland, Andrew Rushby and Kat-e Yeow jointly presented aspects of their design to the committee. We were greatly impressed
with their enthusiasm and confident delivery.
Father Richard Browning was also present for the first part of the meeting. He thanked the P&F for their financial support of the Dirrim Dirrum Conference. Both
P&F President Hannah and Richard spoke of the copious good-will and the enormous collaborative energy of all involved with the conference. Sitesh Bhojani
reminded the Committee of how fortunate the Radford College school community is to have Father Richard as Director of Dirrum Dirrum and the conference.
The P&F invites and encourages all possible involvement/engagement from parents – i.e. questions, concerns, suggestions. Parents are welcome to attend P&F
Management meetings, or to contact the P&F by e-mail to Secretary Heidi Norton [email protected]
To find out more about the P&F, you can click on to “Community” on the Radford web site, then Parents and Friends e.g. “who we are...” and “what you can do...”

From the Head of Junior School
Paul Southwell
Each year that I am here, I'm amazed that everyone knows my birthday! This year’s was particularly heartwarming. I challenged your sons and daughters to write a message
to me, a message where they described a challenge they wanted to face themselves.
I arrived at school to find my entire office covered in messages. Boys and girls talking about, "listening better on the mat, sitting with quiet people, organising their room,
getting better at French Knitting or ballet, improving in reading, no sweets on weekends," and so many more. My room is full, it's alive with the ideas put forward from PreK to
Year Six. My sincere and heartfelt thank you to all our students for this response.
Book Week Parade
Speaking of responses, I must also acknowledge the lovely response from families to our annual Book week parade last Friday. As I had discussed with our older students,
"it's easy to sit and watch, much harder to jump in and risk embarrassing yourself". Our students excelled in their response. Not simply putting on a simple change of clothes,
instead, a real book character. This was not missed by our younger students! This type of culture has been built by our staff, and our parents and grandparents. Rob Elder
was a standout!

InCas
InCas assessments have begun this week, with classes involved in this online standardised process. As this is the fourth year we have run these, we are beginning to
compile a very interesting amount of data to support our classroom teaching. I hope to be able to expand on some of this in coming weeks.
A short message this week, as it's Monday evening when It's written…Pizza Birthday dinner. Again, I truly thank you for the children who grace this College. Days like today
make it so special.
Finally, today was a busy day as I also undertook the ice bucket challenge, dressed as THAT Gruffalo. A worthy, worthy cause.
Warmest Regards
Paul Southwell

This section of our Junior School Bytes is designed to keep our school community informed about our Primary Years Programme curriculum in the Junior School.
This week I invite you to visit the newly constructed Home Learning Ideas page on Radford Online.
The page has been designed to give students the option to practice and consolidate skills beyond the classroom. There are a range of websites, resources, tasks and
activities in which students can engage. In alignment with our pedagogical approach in the classroom, there is a decreased emphasis on the product of learning and an
increased emphasis on the process.
Year 6 Exhibition - save the date!
the culmination of the Year 6 Exhibition will be held on Wednesday 17 September at 6pm in the RA Young Hall.
All members of the Radford community are welcome to this evening.
