Family presented the Wilfred Hiura Memorial Perpetual
Trophy to the Super Seniors Flight Champion Kei Yamamoto.
Ryan Kimura triumphed over a field of 144 golfers to win
the 26th Annual Kimochi Golf Tournament held September
21, 2007 at the Richmond Country Club. Under ideal Indian
summer weather conditions, Kimura shot 82-18-64 to win
Field Low Net honors and the prestigious Tosh Hara - Sam
Sato Memorial Perpetual Trophy. Kimura, celebrating his
26th birthday, was persistent in attacking and successfully
navigating Richmond’s slick
sloping greens.
A New Direction for Kimochi Lounge
2007 Kimochi, Inc. Board of Directors
Kimochi Lounge was opened as our first agency site in 1971. It was
created as a meeting place where the Issei (first generation Japanese
Americans) could rest, relax, get the latest news in the community,
meet friends, and have tea.
Today, Kimochi Lounge has evolved into an important resource center
and outreach site where seniors and their families can receive vital
information to help them remain independent and active at home.
Kimochi staff has carefully compiled useful information including the
following: Nutrition, Health, Alzheimer’s and Dementia, Legal Aspects
of Aging, Senior Safety, Driving Safety, and Housing.
Family caregiving is a growing role many family members are facing.
Information on long distance family caregiving, how to develop family
care plans, how to conduct family care meetings, and selecting
appropriate housing and care options for seniors are examples of the
types of information available at Kimochi Lounge.

It houses a book and video library for seniors. A wide selection of
Japanese books and videos ranging from “enka” (Japanese music)
shows to popular drama series are available to check out for free.
Arts and crafts made by our seniors are also available for sale at this
location as well as other Kimochi products.
All proceeds benefit Kimochi programs
and services.

activities for seniors with the belief that creative expression
benefits physical and mental well-being and can enhance
and support a healthy and independent lifestyle. Class
participants vary from the recently retired to the Kimochi
Home residential care and day care clients with projects
that encourage and improve hand-eye coordination, provide
fun and mental stimulation, and enhance self-esteem
through artistic discovery. In anticipation of an expanding
senior population, this program is committed to providing
the kind of artistic and intellectual stimulation that is so
valuable in our later years. The following artists are

theater, bar and bistro space (formerly AMC Kabuki Theater).
A classic American chef who studied at the Culinary Academy
as well as in Tuscany, Chef Vincent’s philosophy is to offer the
freshest possible ingredients to inspire all the senses. Previous
to joining Kitchen, Chef Vincent worked with Executive Chef
Nancy Oakes at the James Beard-awarded Boulevard Restaurant
in San Francisco.
Sansei Live! brought together multiple generations of friends,
families and community for an evening of entertainment, live
music and dancing, food and creative arts demonstrations, and
raffle prizes. It was held again at the Presidio Officers’ Club,in
the San Francisco Presidio Saturday, October 20, 2007 6:00pm –
midnight and was hosted by KTVU’s Robert Handa.
Live Performances
Musical entertainment was led by EXPO, one of the few bands
to feature a three-piece horn section that mixes soulful love
songs and Latin rock. EXPO features Donna Ong-Kimura, Mike
Leong, Gerald Villa, Johannes Mager, Tiffany Carrico, Mark
Christensen, Ron Estrada, Don Ono, Art Wong and Doug Lee.
Steve Nakajo, Executive Director of Kimochi, Inc.,
presented the Kimochi Spirit Awards to Ken Mintz, Area
Manager of External Affairs at AT&T and Randy

The emcee for the day’s festivities was John Sasaki, an

Kimochi Board of Directors Chairman Roy Ikeda
welcomed those in attendance, including California
Assemblyman Mark Leno and San Francisco Supervisor
Ross Mirkirimi, who spoke of their appreciation for the
work that Kimochi does. Leno had a special
proclamation for Kimochi and the honorees.
Mintz then announced that AT&T was donating $10,000

The program ended with a raffle drawing for two
roundtrip tickets to Japan, donated by Japan Airlines.
The winner was Ginger Masuoka.
New Kimochi Active-Aging Programs
Kimochi is looking to adapt and build new programs for the
growing number of Bay Area boomers entering retirement who
are thinking of aging differently from their parents. “Seniors
today don’t think of themselves as seniors,” says Kimochi
Executive Director, Steve Nakajo. “They have grown up in a
culture that is well aware of the value of physical activity and
social engagement. Our services need to adapt to the way
seniors think of themselves. Aside from our current roster of
services, we want to promote a wellness agenda to nurture
independence and active aging.”
Kimochi All-Stars returned for its third Sansei Live! and they
bring back their special brand of 70s and 80s dance music with
the rhythm section of Al Sugaya on drums, Tim Leong on bass,
Paul Louie on keyboards, and Ronnie Lowe on guitar. The
group featured the vocal talent Elsa Denton.
Hip-hop stars Estairy and Skitz, members of the world
recognized group Scojourners, also performed. DJ Paul Chin
provided additional music to keep everyone dancing.
Kimochi’s Creative Wellness Program is one program that
started several years ago and is grounded in the belief that
creative expression and artistic discovery can happen at any
age and it benefits physical and mental well-being. “The goal is
to enhance and support a healthy and independent lifestyle,”
says Anna Sawamura-Higaki, Kimochi Program Director.
“Kimochi Creative Wellness class participants vary from the
recently retired to the Kimochi Home residential care and day
care clients.” Local artists volunteer their time as instructors
Angie Chan (Ceramics), Yoshiko Fujimoto (Japanese ‘odori’ or
traditional dance), Akie Karahashi (Calligraphy), Dyanna LeeLouie and Etsuko Sakimura (Arts and Crafts), Atsuko Sells (Qi
Gong), Takeko Seto (Hula dance), Yasuko Shintaku (Exercise)
and Peko Yamaguchi (Singing). The students’ artwork were on
display at Sansei Live! and students also performed hula and
odori during the evenings program.
Culinary Demonstrations
Returning were the popular Culinary Demonstrations by Bay
Area Asian Chefs led by Chef Ming Adler, pastry and gelato
consultant with Fabbri based in Bologna, Italy. Chef Ming’s
interest in food began in her native Hawaii, but her culinary
interest, especially in pastries, developed further in her work
and travels through Paris, New York and San Francisco.
Chef Ming began her association with Kimochi six years ago
when she was first introduced to Sansei Live!. Since then, Ming
has spearheaded the recruitment of participating Bay Area Chefs
who wow the audience. “It is wonderful to see the solidarity
among community for Kimochi. Kimochi always touches home
with me and I always want to support our seniors.”
Among the participating chefs joining Chef Ming, was Chef
Vincent Schofield, who is executive chef at Sundance Cinemas

Club Nikkei
Join in the Fun of Group Activities!
Are you, a friend, or a family member looking for fun things
to do? Are you concerned about going out alone? Kimochi
Senior Center has the answer: Join Club Nikkei!
A committee made up of staff and senior volunteers meet
regularly to develop a calendar of activities and trips for
Club Nikkei. All club members are sent a monthly calendar
and all they need to do is drop by the senior center office or
call to reserve a space. It’s as simple as that! The annual
membership fee is $50. This covers transportation and
mailing costs. Members pay for the costs of the activity
themselves. This year, club members have been offered
activities such as attending plays, the symphony, fairs, obon
festivals, church bazaars, dinners, movies, fruit picking and
Indian casinos. Leave the planning and driving to us!
In Summer 2007, Kimochi Senior Center formed Club
Nikkei, a group of active and independent seniors from the
Nikkei community who have one important thing in
common: they want to go out and have fun! Our agency
offers many programs and services but for years has been
asked by seniors and volunteers for more activities and trips
focused on healthy seniors who just want to get out,
socialize with others, and enjoy life in their retired years.
They didn’t want to deal with the hassle of driving and
parking or concerns about going out, especially at night.
We surveyed seniors and the consensus given: “I want to get
out of the house and have fun.”
If you are interested in joining Club Nikkei, please call
Justin Ng, Senior Center Coordinator, or Jun Aita, Senior
Center Assistant, at (415) 931-2287 or e-mail them at
[email protected] or [email protected].

2008 will be another eventful year for
Kimochi. At a recent board meeting,
Sango Harumi, our Social Services
Coordinator, reported on the state of
affairs of Kimochi’s social services. It
was quite clear from his report that
the need for our services in our
Japanese American community has
never been greater. Here are some of
the more challenging needs Sango identified.

The need for alternative care such as in-home support services
and assisted living.
The need for local senior access to Social Security services and
assistance. The closure of the easily accessible Social Security
office on Fillmore Street has made it more difficult for local
seniors, especially Japanese and Korean speaking seniors, to
obtain services and resolve problems.

The need for a bi-lingual social services staff to translate for and
assist Japanese and Korean speaking seniors continues to grow.
The need for affordable senior housing in Japantown. Seniors
enjoy Japantown’s “senior friendly” environment. Even some of
the “new” seniors, the graying “baby boomers,” have expressed a
wish to live in Japantown.

While automated telephone systems with touch tone or voice
activated menus and internet websites are both cost effective and
the “wave of the future,” they are not “senior friendly.” Many of
our seniors have difficulty finding services, communicating their
needs and/or understanding the procedures they should follow to
get those needs addressed. Kimochi must be there to assist our
seniors in meeting their needs.
Rich Tokeshi, Transportation Coordinator
Mark Mylroie, Driver
John Nagano, Driver
It is ironic that Kimochi was established to address some of these
same needs. In 1971, Kimochi was founded as a community-based
organization to provide programs and services for our Issei elders.
In 1974, we established a nutrition program with congregate
dining and later, home delivered meals. In 1983, we established
Kimochi Home as a senior friendly residential/respite care facility.
In 2008, Kimochi Home will observe its twenty-fifth anniversary
– watch for announcements about the celebration of this
milestone.

Now, 36 years after its founding, Kimochi is facing a more

2008 will be another eventful year for
Kimochi. At a recent board meeting,
Sango Harumi, our Social Services
Coordinator, reported on the state of
affairs of Kimochi’s social services. It
was quite clear from his report that
the need for our services in our
Japanese American community has
never been greater. Here are some of
the more challenging needs Sango identified.
Steve Nakajo, Executive Director
Steve Ishii, Operations Director
Anna Sawamura-Higaki, Program Director
Sandy Ouye Mori, Development Director
Rod Valdepenas, Controller

Emily Hsieh, Administrative Assistant

The need for more Japanese speaking physicians. Today there are
fewer Japanese speaking physicians than in the past and few of
these physicians are accepting new patients.

– watch for announcements about the celebration of this
milestone.

Now, 36 years after its founding, Kimochi is facing a more
challenging time for our board, staff and organization as we
continue to provide programs and services for all our seniors
while planning and introducing relevant programs for the aging
“baby boomer” generation.
I want all of our volunteers and donors to know how much we
appreciate and thank you for your unselfish and generous
support. We cannot meet the needs of our seniors without your
support.

Center Assistant, at (415) 931-2287 or e-mail them at
[email protected] or [email protected].

activities for seniors with the belief that creative expression
benefits physical and mental well-being and can enhance
and support a healthy and independent lifestyle. Class
participants vary from the recently retired to the Kimochi
Home residential care and day care clients with projects
that encourage and improve hand-eye coordination, provide
fun and mental stimulation, and enhance self-esteem
through artistic discovery. In anticipation of an expanding
senior population, this program is committed to providing
the kind of artistic and intellectual stimulation that is so
valuable in our later years. The following artists are
