One of the neat things about visiting a place is having the
opportunity to go to a restaurant or shop or event that has been
recommended by a local person. It just makes the experience
seem more authentic, as if you become part of the community
somehow by being amongst the locals. That’s what this magazine
is all about - authentic experiences recommended by the locals.
The experience of traveling in the Ottawa Valley is really about the
people you meet. It could be the physiotherapy student who works
at the golf course for the summer. It could be the artist who has
sold their work all over the world and runs a studio out of their
home. It could also be tourism operators who came from the city,
fell in love with the country and moved their life here. There is
something about this place - it’s as if you are meant to be here.
So “get your travel on” and start exploring this Ottawa Valley
region. Bring this magazine to your cottage or keep it in your car
and open it when you need an idea of what to do this weekend.
Travel safely. Give yourself enough time to get places. And ask
the locals for help with anything. Enjoy traveling our backyard!

Camping Tips & Tricks
REPAIR TRICKS
COOKING TIPS
A CLEAN TENT
Duct tape can fix a lot of things
such as a tent pole, a hole in
your tent, or a hole in the
canoe. A sewing kit can be used
for rips in sleeping bags. Don't
sew a tent hole because a stitch
creates a water entry point.
Think about cooking one-pot
meals to reduce dishes and save
on camp fuel. Instead of boxes
of bulk foods, open packages
and pack in bags or reusable
containers. Freeze food ahead
so it can store in a cooler.
To keep a clean tent, bring a
small beach mat for shoes so
they can be left outside. A
small broom and pan makes for
an easy clean-up job. Always
keep the tent zipped closed to
keep the bugs out.
SET UP TIPS
WILDLIFE
PACKING TIPS
Choose a flat area away from
trees and the fire pit. Consider
the other camping equipment
you are setting up. Leave space
for tent lines. Look up and avoid
being underneath trees with
dead branches that could fall.
Keep dishes clean. Ensure the
cooler and dry food is closed
and sealed. Get rid of garbage
daily. Keep food out of your
tent, including pet food. Don’t
leave food for wildlife. Consider
storing food in the car at night.
Never put your tent away wet
or it will grow mould. Clean
stove with soap and warm water
and let dry. Drain coolers, wash
with warm water and let dry.
Store camping gear in bins so
you’re ready to go next time.
Make sure children know the campsite name and number. Have a phone number for the campground so you
know who to call. Bring a first aid kit. Make sure to drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Bring sunscreen and
apply it regularly. “Leaves of three, let them be” is a good rule of thumb to avoid poison ivy.

Classic Theatre Festival Expands in 2016
The Classic Theatre Festival,
the only professional company in
the Ottawa Valley, produces
enjoyable, accessible hits from
the golden age of Broadway and
the London Stage with some of
Canada's top theatrical talent. In
its seventh season, the Festival is
expanding with three main-stage
shows running eight times a week
from June 24 to September 11.
The 110-seat theatre is an
intimate, wheelchair accessible
space with air conditioning and
free parking.
The season opens with Neil
Simon's “I Ought to Be in
Pictures” (June 24-July 17). It is
a heartfelt comedy about a father
and daughter rebuilding their
relationship after years of
disconnection. “A mature,
touching, memorable play that
brings great joy to the season”
(Clive Barnes, New York Post).
The next play is “Arms and the
Man” (July 22-August 14). This
is George Bernard Shaw's
delightfully witty comedy
satirizing the futility of war.
George Orwell called it “the
wittiest play” Shaw ever wrote. It
is directed by Laurel Smith, who
ran critically-acclaimed “Shaw in
the City” shows in Toronto and
had a stint at the Shaw Festival.
The season closes with “An
Inspector Calls” (August 19September 11). This is J.B.
Priestley's nailbiter of a mystery
in which a body has been found
and everyone is suspect. A true
classic of mid-20th-century
English theatre, its numerous
adaptations and revivals include a
2016 BBC-TV film.
All shows run Wednesday to
Sunday at 2:00pm with 8:00pm
shows also on Wednesday,
Thursday and Saturday.
Walking Tour Returns
In addition, the Festival's
popular theatrical historic
walking tours return with brand
new stories. “Perth through the
Ages” (June 22-August 28) on
Wednesday to Sunday at
11:00am. This is an hour-long
“play that moves” and focuses
on Indigenous-settler relations at
the time of the founding of the
Perth Military Settlement on
Algonquin territory. Also
returning is “The Lonely Ghosts
Walk” (July 1-August 26). This
is a Friday night stroll with a
spirited story focusing on the
production of whiskey in Perth
and the work of women's groups
to counteract the negative effects
alcohol consumption had on the
community's early years.

Thinking About Trying Golf? Try These Tips First!
Each summer, many people
think about taking up the game
of golf. As someone who teaches
golf, I have noticed that there are
some common questions and
misconceptions about the game
that, once clear
Clubs Matter
New golfers often use old or
used clubs to try the game before
they invest in a newer set. Clubs
have a big role to play in your
enjoyment of the game. The
easier the ball is to hit, the
happier you will be, so if you’re
using old, heavy clubs, your
experience may not be as good as
if your clubs were more modern.
Manufacturers always look for
ways to make clubs easier to hit,
so for new golfers, this is really
important. Give yourself the best
chance at trying golf with clubs
that are more modern.
Taking Lessons
Lessons give you the most
important tool you can have as a
new golfer: how to hit the ball the
best you can. No two people play
golf the same way, so one of the
best things you can do at the start
of golfing is to find out what your
way is in playing golf. It doesn’t
matter if you have ever played a
sport before in your life - you can
still golf. And the same can be
said the other way: you may be a
multi-sport athlete but struggle
with golf. It’s an individual game,
and knowing the things you can
do to be better from the
beginning will help you a lot in
the long run. Find a golf pro you
like and take some lessons.

The Mental Game
Just because golf is slower than
other sports doesn’t mean it’s
easier. In fact, it is a really great
mental test every time you play.
Most of the golf you have likely
seen has been on TV, and those
are the best of the best. It’s like
taking up tennis and expecting to
play as well as Serena Williams
right off the bat. Park the
expectations of what you think
you should play like, and just
enjoy learning the game. The
good stuff will come.
Social Outings
There is no rule of thumb of
when to get involved in social
golf events, but there is a huge
misconception that you have to
be a good player to play in league
nights or tournaments. It is
always helpful to learn a few
things before you go into these
events, but every golfer was once
new to the game, so if you don’t
know something, just ask. I
always recommend that new
golfers tell the group, “I’m new
to golf so if there is something I
should know, please tell me so I
can learn it faster.”
Golf is an awesome game that
unites young and old, casual and
competitive, rookies and
veterans.
It truly is a sport for life.

Sigrid Naturals Connects To Youth in Mexico
Small is beautiful: micro
business, youth entrepreneurship
and the art of handmade skin
care. Sigrid Naturals began in a
small town in Wilno, Canada and
now spreads skin care products,
handmade with love, to a small
town in San Pancho, Mexico.
For 14 years, Sigrid Naturals
has flourished as an eco-friendly
and community-minded business
with a unique focus on
handmade, top quality skin care
products, created with local wildcrafted plants. In mid-2015,
Geddes felt it was time to enrich
her life by reaching out a little
further, and decided to volunteer
her time and knowledge by
helping create a micro-business
with youth in Mexico.
Geddes contacted a community
education centre, Entre Amigos,
located in San Pancho, Mexico,
offering to come and share her
successful business model of
hand crafted skin care. She was
happy to receive a positive
resposne from the organization's
Young Entrepreneurship
Program. So the journey began.
A 1985 cherry red Volkswagon
camper-van, affectionately
named Lady Bug, was purchased
and an adventurous team was
formed. The plan was to drive
4580 kilometres from Wilno to
San Pancho. However, after
many mishaps, Lady Bug broke
down for the third time just
before the Texas/Mexico border.
In addition to the breakdown and
the never ending slew of people
saying, “you're crazy” and “be
careful,” the team decided to
abandon the dream of driving and
flew from San Antonio, Texas to
Puerta Vallarta, Mexico.
The following six weeks were
spent working alongside four
female teenagers, teaching the
process of creating the skin care
products from start to finish. A
strong emphasis was put on the
importance of using local
ingredients for economical and
social enrichment, as well as
ecological awareness. The cacao
was purchased from a chocolate
specialty shop just across the
street from Entre Amigos, and the
honey and propolis was delivered
weekly by an elderly local man
who carries a bucket of bee
products on his back.
The teens were also given the
tools for branding and marketing
their new line to give their microbusiness a proper launch.
Together they created a name for
their company, names for their
products, beautiful labels and
enticing descriptions. The
business is called Natural
Essence Skin Care, hand made
with love in San Pancho, Mexico.
All proceeds go to financing
college or university tuition for
youth who run the business.

Camping Tips To Make For A Great Experience
Going camping for the first
time? Or maybe the first time in a
long time? Ontario Parks has
teamed up with Coleman for a
“Learn to Camp” initiative that
helps people prepare to go
camping. Most tips apply to
tenting, but if you’re a camper,
you can use some of these ideas
too to make your camping
experience even better!
Sleeping
In addition to your tent, you
may want to bring a ground sheet
or tarp as well. If you bring a
mattress, make sure to bring an
air pump. If you bring a sleeping
bag, you may also want a light
sheet in case it’s warm. An extra
blanket and pillow completes
your sleeping checklist, along
with a lantern or flashlight in
case you need to find the
bathroom in the dark!
Cooking
In addition to any cooking
appliances you may bring, some
of the extras include: tablecloth,
fuel (for stove), pots and pans,
sharp knife and cutting board,
can opener, water jug/bottles,
dishpan with soap and cloth, resealable containers and zipperlock bags and garbage bags.
Other helpful pieces include
plates and cutlery, dish towels,
paper towels and an extra bowl.
Tools & First Aid
Probably the easiest thing to do
is buy or make a first aid kit
(many details on doing that are
online). For tools, some handy
things to have include: duct tape,
batteries, rope, bungee cords,
mallet, multi-tool (ie: Swiss
Army Knife) and a sewing kit.
Tarps are always handy, so an
extra one can work as a dining
shelter if it’s raining or a sun
shelter if it’s really hot. Make
sure to add some matches and
maybe a BBQ lighter.
Some Final Tips
Make a bag for each person on
the trip for toiletries (soap,
shampoo, deodorant, etc.) Make
it portable so each person can
bring it with them to the shower.
Dice and cards and a pad of
paper and a pen are always good
for kids and adults when it comes
to passing some time.
Make sure to bring some extra
clothing (long sleeves and long
pants) even when it’s very warm
out. The nights can be cooler in a
tent than you might think.
Camping can be a lot of fun,
and even more fun when you
have everything you need for a
great night, weekend or week.

Black
Bear
Encounters
Black bear attacks are extremely rare. Most
human-bear conflicts occur when bears are
attracted by smells and rewarded with an easy
meal. In case you encounter a bear, here is some
information, provided by the Ontario Ministry of
Natural Resources on what to do:
Report a Bear Problem
Emergency encounters
-Call 911 or local police, if a bear poses an
immediate threat to personal safety.
Non-emergency encounters
Call the Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-5142327 if a bear is roaming around. Bear Wise
reporting is available April 1 to November 30.
How To Prevent Encounters
+ Never feed bears or try to approach them.
+ Put garbage in containers with tight-fitting lids.
Put them out on the morning of garbage day.
+ Frequently wash garbage and recycling
containers and lids with a strong disinfectant.
+ Fill bird feeders only in the winter months. Put
away feeders in the spring and offer birds natural
alternatives (flowers, nesting boxes, fresh water).
+ Do not leave pet food outdoors or in a porch.
+ Refrain from putting meat, fish or fruit scraps in
composters outside. Keep scraps in the freezer
until garbage day.
+ Pick ripe fruit from trees and bushes and fallen
fruit off the ground.
+ Remove grease and food residue from BBQ
grills, including the grease cup, after each use.
If You Encounter A Bear
Bear Warning Signals
Stop. Do not panic. Remain calm.
+ Determine which type of an encounter this
might be - sighting, surprise or close encounter.
+ Do not try to get closer to the bear for a better
look or picture.
+ Make sure the bear has a clear escape route:
don’t corner a bear.
+ Always watch the bear and slowly back away
until the bear is out of sight.
+ Get inside if you are near a building or vehicle.
+ Leave the area, if you are berry-picking, hiking,
camping, jogging or cycling.
+ If you are with others, stay together as a group.
+ If the bear does not get closer to you, slowly
back away.
+ DO NOT: scream, turn your back on the bear,
run, kneel down, make direct eye contact, climb a
tree or retreat into water or try and swim - a bear
can do these things much better than you.
A bear usually stands to get a better look at you
or catch your scent. This is not aggressive
behaviour. If a bear feels threatened, it may try to
get you to back off and leave it alone. To do this,
it may:
+ salivate excessively, exhale loudly, or make
huffing, moaning, clacking and popping sounds
with its mouth, teeth and jaws,
+ lower its head with its ears drawn back while
facing you, or
+ charge forward, and/or swat the ground with its
paws (known as a ‘bluff’ charge).
If This Is A Close Encounter
About Black Bears
Yell, wave your arms to make yourself look
bigger; throw objects, blow a whistle or an air
horn; make noise to try and persuade the bear to
leave and prepare to use bear pepper spray.
+ Their entire life revolves around food. When
they are not hibernating, bears spend most of
their time looking for food.
+ When bears pick up a scent with their keen
noses, they will investigate it. If bears are
rewarded with feasts of bird food, garbage or pet
food, they will return as long as the food source
is available.
+ It’s best to prevent encounters with bears in the
first place. But if a bear continues to be a
problem, and you’ve exhausted all other
alternatives, as a property owner, you have the
right to protect your personal property and
yourself. You do not need a hunting licence, but
you must report a killed bear to the MNRF office.
If The Bear Keeps Advancing To You
Stand your ground, use your bear pepper spray
(if the bear is within seven metres) or anything
else you can find or use to threaten or distract
the bear. Fight back as if your life depends on it.
Take Safety Precautions
After The Bear Leaves
+ Carry a readily-accessible whistle or air horn.
+ Learn how to use bear pepper spray.
+ Consider carrying a long-handled axe, if you
are in “remote areas or deep in the forest.”
+ Tell others about bear activity in the area.
+ If the bear was eating from a non-natural food
source (like garbage or bird food), remove or
secure the item that attracted the bear.
TRAVEL OUR BACKYARD MAGAZINE
Make Noise
Generally, the noisier the bear is, the less
dangerous it is, provided you don't approach the
bear. The noise is meant to ‘scare’ you off and
acts as a warning signal.

Renfrew County ATV Club: Big Plans for 2016!
The Renfrew County ATV
Club works with the Eastern
Ontario Trails Alliance (EOTA)
offering ATVing excitement on
many kilometres of managed
trails that meander through
forests, lake view vistas and
remarkable Eastern Ontario
landscapes. The Provincial Trail
Permit pass enables you to ride
any Renfrew County and EOTA
trails in Ontario, and is an
automatic membership to the
Renfrew County ATV Club.
The Renfrew County trail
network is more than 400
kilometres and includes forest
access roads and abandoned rail
lines. This adventurous route
winds through the countryside,
connecting to numerous rural
communities. You’re never far
from an eatery, convenience
store or accommodations
provider on our trails. The
ATVers on the trails (locals and
visitors) are strong supporters of
local community businesses, and
those business, in return, are
strong supporters of the ATV
Club and it’s commitment to
local recreation.
Club Benefits
The ATV Club gets together
for many reasons. Some of our
volunteers brush and clear trails,
and others are on hand to
organize events throughout the
season or group rides for fun or
charity. The Club has an Annual
General Meeting each year
where we hear from the public
and set the course for the
following season.
Spend Your Summer On
The Water, Not On The Beach!
A Volunteer Organization
The Renfrew County ATV
Club is run exclusively by
volunteers. People dedicate their
time to maintaining and
expanding the trails, which helps
ensure riders have a memorable
riding experience across
Renfrew County. If you are a
local ATV rider, seasonally or
year-round, we would love to
have you join our volunteer
team. We are always on the
lookout for enthusiastic people
who like to ride and to spend
some time with like-minded
individuals. Our volunteer
opportunities are varied and we
can match you with something
that suits your likes and
experiences, and available time.
We also encourage you to
attend some of our group rides.
We had a number of wellattended ATV runs last year, and
2016 is shaping up to be the best
in recent memory. Our 2016

Fish License Free July 2-10, 2016 in Ontario
Ontario Family Fishing
Events is a province-wide
opportunity for Canadian
residents to fish Ontario
waters without the
otherwise mandatory fishing
version outdoors card. The
Ontario Government has
designated July 2-10, 2015
(12:01 a.m. Saturday to
11:59 p.m. Monday) as their
second free fishing period
for the year. During all
other time periods,
Canadian residents between
the ages of 18 and 64 years must
purchase a valid fishing license to
legally fish in Ontario.
There has never been a better
time to introduce a friend to
fishing!
Participants fishing without a
license must fish under the
Conservation fishing license
limits which are set out in the
current Ontario Recreational
Fishing Regulations. With the
exception of the licensing
requirement, Ontario fishing
regulations, fees and limits

New To Fishing? Here Are
Some Helpful Tips
Few things match the
excitement of a first fishing trip.
From the natural setting to the
anticipation and mystery of what
may be in the water, fishing can
be a great family activity.
Simple equipment such as an
inexpensive rod and reel with live
bait and a bobber will get you off
to a good start. If you fish from
shore, it allows kids the
opportunity to run and play when
they need to. Learning how to
untangle lines, bait a hook and
cast can be great self-esteem
builders for kids.
It’s always good to have pliers,
nail clippers, a bucket and a net
on your fishing trip. These
tools can come in handy in the
enjoyment of your time. A first
aid kit is also helpful for any
nicks and scrape. And, don’t
forget your camera - you want
proof of those great fish stories
to share!
Visit Our Website
Our website has many
resources for people new to
fishing and for kids. We have a
video to watch and a colouring
competition where your child
could meet Bob the Bobber!
In addition there are links to how
to get started fishing,
conservation areas in Ontario, a
tackle sharing program and
information about obtaining your
Ontario fishing license.

Ottawa Valley Culture: Focus On Hunting
Hunting is an important part of
Canada's resource-based
economy. That may be no more
true than in the Ottawa Valley.
This rural-based activity is a key
economic driver for local
communities, and a key part of
our culture.
According to the Ontario
Federation of Anglers and
Hunters (OFAH), Ontario reaped
$1.5 billion in economic benefits
associated with hunting in 2000.
The industry also employed
20,000 people (many in rural
areas) and earned $140 million
for federal, provincial and
municipal governments as well in
licenses and taxes. For example:
+ Canadian hunters spent $1.2
billion a year on hunting trips,
and paid $70 million in licenses.
+ Hunting and fishing license
sales represented 70% of the total
operating budget of the Ontario
Ministry of natural Resources.
+ Ontario's hunting industry
generated more wealth than the
television and film production
industry ($1.4 billion).
Hunting is also a tourism driver
to drawing Americans who are
considered “high yield” travelers,
because they stay for a longer
time in Canada while visiting. A
2006 survey showed that 9.2
million Americans went hunting
in Canada while on an out-oftown trip, and 73 per cent
indicated hunting was the main
reason for taking the trip.
According to the Canadian
Tourism Commission's 2012
report entitled, “Sport Fishing
and Game Hunting in Canada: An
assessment ton the potential
international tourism
opportunity,” hunting is, by
nature, a rural activity. It is also
an activity that takes place in the
off-peak tourism season, thereby
contributing greatly to the
economic activity during this
time of year.
Hunting also plays a role in
managing wildlife conflicts in
communities. In February of this
year, the Ontario government
announced an extension to the
spring bear hunting pilot

INSURANCE
When it comes to
Ottawa Valley leisure
time, we have the
insurance
developed two years earlier. With
a black bear population of over
100,000, the population is
sustainable and healthy. The
expanded spring bear hunt is
taking place at all 88 wildlife
management units that currently
have a fall bear hunt, and will be
in effect until 2020. Across
Canada, each province and
territory with black bears has a
spring and fall bear hunt, with the
exception of Nova Scotia that has
only a fall hunt.
Like many of our resourcebased activities, hunting balances
social and economic benefits in a
community. The Ottawa Valley is
fortunate to have hunting as a
strong cultural asset.

The Airport And Tourism: More Than You Think
When you think about an
airport's connection to the
tourism industry, the first thing
that probably comes to your mind
is getting on a plane and flying to
a destination. What you may not
know is that airports contribute to
tourism in ways that has nothing
to do with passenger travel.
One of these tourism support
roles is in wildlife management.
In Ontario, the Ministry of
Natural Resources (MNR) has a
major role in wildlife
management. They track
populations of a variety of
species such as wild turkey,
moose, deer, bear and more. In
the winter of 2016, the MNR was
at the Pembroke & Area Airport
for a few weeks to track deer
populations. According to the
MNR website, white-tailed deer
number approximately 400,000
making them the most numerous
of deer, moose, caribou and elk.
“White-tailed deer hold strong
ecological, social and economic
importance in Ontario...they
generate millions of dollars in
economic activity each year,
through hunting, viewing and
tourism, they are a social and
cultural icon to many of Ontario's
rural communities and they hold
cultural, spiritual, and social
significance for many Aboriginal
communities...”
One way in which deer counts
are determined is through aerial
surveys, such as those conducted
this year at the Pembroke & Area
Airport. Locally, hunting and
wildlife viewing are significant
tourism draws to the Ottawa
Valley, and thus managing these
populations has a direct impact
on the local economy.
This accounting of populations
helps ensure the continuation of a
species, as was the case with wild
turkeys in Ontario. With a
population now of 70,000, this
species was nearly non-existent
in 1909. Introducing turkeys
helped increase the population,
and the establishment of a Wild
Turkey Management Plan for
Ontario helps protect the species.
For example, wild turkey hunters
must report harvested turkeys to
the MNR so the information can
be used to manage the species.
In Ontario, “draws” for moose,
deer and elk determine hunting
opportunities. These draws have
certain criteria that hunters must
meet to obtain a license. The
opportunities can change yearly
based on information obtained by
aerial surveys. Tags to hunt may
increase when population levels
are high and decrease when
population levels are low.
Hunting has been recognized as
an important part of the tourism
industry in Ontario.
So the next time you drive past
a small airport, including the
Pembroke & Area Airport, you
are driving past a business that
supports tourism, even if you
haven't purchased a ticket.
