PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
We are pleased to have you as partners in this educational process. As the year progresses, I urge all students to take
advantage of the many opportunities offered at Chancellor High School. One of our goals is to see that the parents
and guardians of students, as well as students themselves, feel at home at Chancellor. To aid in this goal, our
“Chancellor Charger News” is mailed to all students’ homes periodically throughout the school year with information
about events and activities. In addition, our “Pony Express” mini-newsletter will be sent home with your child on the
months we do not publish the more extensive “Chancellor Charger News.” Be sure to ask your child if they have received any written information at school from time to time, in the event that these materials are buried in backpacks,
among their class work! Daily announcements are emailed to our parents, as well as any pertinent announcements.
"Loops" is our e-mail service that will send out CHHS Announcements and general school and district information. To opt in, please go to the following link to Subscribe yourself: http://loops.spotsylvania.k12.va.us/. This is an
excellent way to stay informed of current happenings at Chancellor High School!
The Chancellor High School faculty and staff continues to concentrate on evaluating the groundwork that has been
laid for our students in the past, and strive to determine how we can improve in the current year. As we continue to
make improvements in all areas, the Chancellor High School family, as a whole, will proudly excel. Let us make
2015-2016 our best school year ever.

Dear Parents of Chancellor High School Athletes,
Spotsylvania County Public Schools will require that each student pay a nonrefundable athletic fee of $75 for each sport in which he or she is a confirmed member.
Athletes that tryout and become an official team member will be required to pay the athletic fee prior to the first official contest in order to be eligible to compete. Fees collected
will contribute to the Spotsylvania County Public Schools’ budget to assist with coaching
stipends and transportation costs. The assessment of fees has been implemented at the
direction of the School Board. There is no relationship between athletic fees and a guarantee of student playing time. The decision for playing time by athletes is the sole decision of the head coach and his/her staff.
The fee will be waived for students that qualify for economically disadvantaged status. Eligibility for economically disadvantaged status must be documented at
the school level. Athletic fees may be paid at the individual school sites prior to every
athletic season. If a payment is made on-line, you must bring a copy of the webstore payment confirmation and the Athletic Fee Agreement to the school. Every school will communicate the fee collection night prior to each athletic season.
It is the policy of the Spotsylvania County School Board not to discriminate against any handicapped
person nor any person on the basis of race, national origin, sex, age, ancestry, or marital status.

PSAT- ATTENTION JUNIORS AND SOPHOMORES
The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT) will be administered at Chancellor High School on WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14th. This is a version of the College Board Scholastic Aptitude
Test and should be taken by sophomores and juniors who will complete high school and plan to enter college. For
sophomores, this is a practice test, and will need to be taken again during their junior year to be eligible for National
Merit Scholarship Competition. It serves as a practice test for College Boards and is required for certain scholarships.
Sophomores and juniors wishing to take the test should register in the guidance office with Marsha Siget/Loretta
Fleming. The registration deadline date will be in September and will be announced. The test fee of $14.00 will need
to be paid at the time of registration and students will receive a practice test booklet at the time of registration.
PSAT test results will be returned in December. At that time, students will receive the test booklet they used for the
test and will be able to review which questions were answered correctly and those which were answered incorrectly.
This is an excellent way to know what areas students need to review in preparation of SAT testing next spring.

CHANCELLOR HIGH SCHOOL WEB PAGE AND
OTHER SCHOOL INFORMATION SOURCES
Chancellor High School maintains a web page with current information that can be of help to both students
and parents. The school calendar is updated each month. Guidance has developed a newsletter page for each
grade level. Athletic schedules are updated with each season change. There are search engines for the
students to use, and the library has developed a research page to assist students doing term papers.
The web address is:
http://www.spotsylvania.k12.va.us/chhs/index.htm
In addition to our website, other sources of information, are Channel 18, our extensive Chancellor High
School newsletters that are mailed home periodically through the school year, our “Pony Express” mininewsletter, sent home with your child periodically, and emails from the Principal. Pertinent announcements
are made in the mornings and afternoons on a daily basis to the students, and run for a minimum of three days.
Ask your child to remember to share important information with you that they are aware of through daily announcements if you do not receive our emails.

STUDENT ABSENCES
Parents are asked to call the school when their child is absent from school due to illness or other reasons.
This will eliminate the need for our attendance office to call parents at work to check on absences. Our school
has implemented the use of “Auto Dialer.” Calls will be made to your homes at any designated time during
the day to inform parents of their child’s absence from school. If you have questions about this system, please
call the attendance office.
Parents need to send in excuses for their child’s absence(s) on the day their child returns to school.
Upon the student’s return to school, the student must stop at the Attendance Office, located in the main lobby,
to turn in their excuse note. If the student does not have a note from their parent or doctor on the day they return to school, their absence will be unexcused. Please note the School Board policy concerning excused
absences:
Excused - In general, excused absences are those which are due to illness or death in the immediate family.
The principal may, at her discretion, classify as an excused absence, any absence in which she feels
circumstances make it impractical for the student to attend school. The reason for the absence must be stated
by the parent or guardian in the written note. The student’s first and last name should be written on all notes
submitted, as well as the absence date(s) and the current date. Requests for approval of absences which
will result from family trips or other foreseeable reasons must be submitted in writing and approved by
an administrator in advance. The determination of these absences as excused or unexcused will be based, in
part, on the number of previous absences and the student’s academic standing. The teacher will only grant
“make-up” work for credit with the consent of the principal or her designee.
In addition, Senior Skip Days are not sanctioned by Spotsylvania County Schools and will be counted as
an unexcused absence in the event that your child skips school.
Note: Unexcused Absences and Loss of Privileges
Students who accumulate five (5) unexcused absences will not be permitted to attend the Homecoming Dance,
and will lose their parking permit for one (1) semester. (3 tardies = 1 absence)
Students who accumulate ten (10) unexcused absences will not be permitted to attend Prom, After Prom or
any other dance, and will lose their parking permit for the remainder of the 2015-2016 school year.
(3 tardies = 1 absence)
MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENTS
It is the student’s responsibility to arrange for make-up assignments after an excused absence. Students have a
maximum of three school days to complete work missed. If a student is to be absent two or more
consecutive days, and feels well enough to study at home during an illness, the parent should contact the
guidance department before 9:00 a.m. to request assignments. When books need to be collected from a
student’s locker, the locker number must be provided.
EARLY DISMISSAL REQUESTS
Requests for your child to leave school prior to dismissal at 2:20 p.m. are to be submitted in writing and
turned in before first period at the front desk in the main foyer. Parents will be called to verify the early
dismissal requests. If the student forgets his/her early dismissal note, the parent will need to come to the
Main Lobby to sign their child out of the building. Upon returning to school following an early dismissal, a
note must be submitted at the front foyer reception desk. We can not accept early dismissal requests over
the phone. This is for the safety of your child.

SCHOOL DANCES
School dances begin at 8 p.m. and conclude at 12:00 a.m. Students are expected to comply to the Code of
Conduct at any and all school functions. Inappropriate dancing will result in one warning from an Administrator, followed by a call to the parents to come pick-up their child. This will be strictly enforced.
STUDENT APPEARANCE/ATTIRE
All students are to adhere to the Student Dress Code, located in the Student Handbook. Students should remember that they represent their school to the community. Any mode of dress that contributes to the disruption of school (i.e. obscene message/picture on clothing, short skirts, bare midriffs, short shorts) is
strictly prohibited and may constitute a cause for disciplinary action. All pants should be worn at the
waist line. No undergarments/boxers or shorts should be visible. No leggings are permitted unless a
LONG top is worn to cover bottom and thighs.
PARENTS—IMPORTANT NOTICE
Please help keep interruptions in the classroom to a minimum. We will deliver
messages to students only in case of an emergency and FROM PARENTS
ONLY. We cannot deliver messages from other family members, friends, or
employers. Please make every effort to make arrangements with your child about
doctor’s appointments, transportation issues, etc. before they leave for school in the
mornings. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

ARMED SERVICES VOCATIONAL APTITUDE BATTERY
The ASVAB is an excellent tool which can be used to assist students in determining their potential in
selected occupational areas. Students in grade 10-12 are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.
Interested students will be asked to sign up in Guidance during the month of October. The test will be administered in October.
The results from this battery of tests will provide you with both academic and occupational scores. The
academic scores are 1) Academic Ability, 2) Verbal, and 3) Math. The occupational scores are 1)
Mechanical & Crafts, 2) Business & Clerical, 3) Electronics & Electrical, and 4) Health, Social, &
Technology.
PHYSICAL FITNESS
Physical Fitness Tests will be administered once in the fall and once in the spring to all
students in grades nine and ten. The tests which will be administered are the pull-up, curl-up,
v-sit and reach, and mile run/walk. The purpose of testing is to assess the fitness level of your
son/daughter. The results of the assessment will be used to assist in planning a physical
education program to insure that activities are included that will improve the fitness levels of
students in those areas determined by the test scores to be the weakest. We make every effort
to see that fitness testing is a good educational experience.
One important objective of our program is to teach students the components of physical fitness, how these
components are measured, and the types of activities one must participate in to develop the components of
physical fitness. The components of physical fitness are: arm and shoulder strength and endurance,
abdominal muscle strength and endurance, low back and hamstring flexibility, and cardio-respiratory
endurance. We would like to solicit your parental assistance to encourage your son/daughter to participate
regularly in appropriate physical activities outside of the school setting. It is important that students
develop habits regarding a wholesome fitness lifestyle during the school year and also the summer months.
It would be appreciated if you would notify your son’s or daughter’s physical education teacher if you feel
he/she should not participate in any one of the physical fitness tests for any physical or medical reason.
This notification must be accompanied by a written physician’s excuse.
Thank you for your interest in the fitness development of your son/daughter. We look forward to sharing
the results of the fitness tests with you.

Chancellor High School National Honor Society
Juniors and seniors who have a minimum 3.500 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.50 scale) are considered academically
eligible for membership in the National Honor Society. However, the National Honor Society recognizes outstanding service,
leadership, and character in addition to scholarship. Please be aware that selection to NHS is a privilege bestowed upon students by the Faculty Selection Committee and is not to be considered a right inherent to any student. Technically, students
do not apply for membership in the National Honor Society. Instead, they await an invitation to provide information to be
used by the Faculty Committee to support their candidacy. These invitations are issued to juniors and seniors in the early
fall of each school year. The NHS Faculty Selection Committee bases its decisions on the information students provide for
membership consideration. Students must demonstrate all four of the criteria in order to be selected: community service,
leadership, character, and scholarship.
Please familiarize yourself with the information below before completing the Student Activity Information Form.
***ALL STUDENT ACTIVITY FORMS ARE DUE TO MRS. DOCKERY BY THE ESTABLISHED
DUE DATE EACH FALL. NO LATE FORMS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Scholarship
Only those students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.500 or higher shall be found academically eligible for membership in the National Honor Society.
Leadership
The student exercises leadership when he or she:
*Is resourceful in proposing new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions
*Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities
*Exercises positive influence on peers in upholding school ideals and spirit
*Contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school
*Is able to delegate responsibilities
*Inspires positive behavior in others
*Demonstrates academic initiative
*Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility; conducts business effectively and efficiently; demonstrates reliability and dependability
*Is a leader in the classroom, at work, or in other school or community activities
*Is dependable in any responsibility accepted
The leadership criterion is considered highly important for membership selection. Leadership positions may be elected or appointed.
It is highly recommended that National Honor Society candidates have been an active member of a minimum of three different organizations during their high school years. These may be school or community organizations. The Selection Committee
recognizes that some leadership situations require more time than others, and has therefore divided positions of leadership into
Page 11 Charger News
Chancellor
Page 11
“major” and “minor” positions. In general, a candidate should have one major or two minor leadership positions to fulfill the
minimum leadership requirement. Your performance in leadership positions will also be considered. Sponsors and/or adult supervisors must designate whether the position is to be considered “major” or “minor.” Merely being a member of any organization or
executive board is not enough to qualify as leadership. Students must demonstrate that they were actively leading and serving the
organization. Generally, leadership positions are held in school sponsored activities and can easily be documented by the sponsor.
Please understand that positions to which you have been newly elected may not necessarily count towards your minimum
leadership requirements as you have not yet had a chance to demonstrate and prove your leadership abilities.
The following is a list of activities that students often include in their leadership list.
These are only examples; there are many other worthy leadership positions. You are encouraged to list any and all leadership activities.
Major:







SCA Officer - documented by the sponsor
Club officer - documented by the sponsor
President of church or community organization – documented by the sponsor
Editor-in-chief of a school publication – documented by the sponsor
Captain or Co-Captain of a school sponsored varsity or junior varsity athletic team or cheer squad (if season long) and have
significant leadership responsibilities documented by the team coach. This does not include Parks and Recreation teams or
travel teams. This could be waived with a letter from the coach outlining the significant leadership responsibilities you have
fulfilled.
Leadership position in school-sponsored activity not listed above: drum major, student director (music or theater), prop manager, or other responsible position in play production documented by the sponsor
Major leadership in Scouts – documented by the sponsor
Minor:
 SCA Executive Board, if supported by the sponsor
 Class Board, if supported by sponsor
 Section leader in band, if supported by the director
 Other leadership position on a publication if supported by the sponsor
Service
The student who serves:
*Volunteers and provides dependable and well-organized assistance, and is willing to make sacrifices to offer
assistance
*Works well with others and is willing to take on difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities
*Enthusiastically renders any requested service to the school
*Is willing to represent the class or school in interclass and interscholastic competition
*Does committee and staff work without complaint
*Participates in some activity outside of school, for example, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, religious groups, volunteer services for the elderly, poor, or disadvantaged
*Mentors in the community or students in other schools
*Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students
National Honor Society candidates must have participated in a minimum of three significant service projects during their
high school years. These may be service projects done with a group either in or out of school, or done as individual projects. These
are services that you were not paid to perform. Service activities are viewed in terms of contributions made to school, classmates,
and community. You must provide a detailed description that is verified by the sponsor or adult supervisor. Note: The Faculty Selection Committee is looking for a “lifestyle of service,” not just a few random events.
Page 12 Charger News

Page 12
The following is a list of activities that students often include in their service list.
These are only examples; there are many other worthy service projects. You are encouraged to list any and all service activities.
 Any "athons" (walk-a-thon, bike-a-thon)
 Nursing home visits
 Church service projects and other activities
 Volunteer work at the public library
 Volunteer work at the hospital
 Neighborhood clean-ups
 Boy and Girl Scout service projects
 Services at elementary schools
 Extended tutoring without pay
 Unpaid babysitting as a service to others (not including family/friends)
 Coaching children’s Parks and Recreation sports teams. This does not include being a player.
 Teaching Sunday School as a youth teacher or helper (The selection committee considers this a service project, not leadership.)
NOTE: The NHS Selection Committee feels that the following are club activities and not service projects:
 Helping with homecoming activities
 Fundraising for sports teams or clubs
Character
A person of character demonstrates the following six qualities: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility,
fairness, caring, and citizenship.
A student of character:
*Consistently exemplifies positive and desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, stability)
*Cooperates by complying with all school policies and regulations and codes of conduct
*Takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously
*Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty, academic integrity, and reliability
*Regularly exhibits courtesy, concern, and respect for others
*Complies with instructions and rules, and displays personal responsibility
Faculty members are asked to fill out and submit to the faculty council comment sheets in the areas of
character, leadership, and service for the students being considered. Students’ discipline records are
also reviewed for honor code violations, in-school suspensions, out-of-school suspensions, etc.

PARKING PERMITS
If you are planning to drive to school and purchase a parking permit for the 2015-16 school year, a student
must have a signed Parking Permit Application form and must show Driver’s License and Car Registration
when purchasing. If a student is not available during Parking Permit purchase times, a parent/guardian may
purchase the permit for them with all information above provided. Below are the dates that we will be selling
parking permits at school. The cost for a permit is $80 for the entire year or $40 for one semester and $5 for a
replacement for a lost decal. Students may pay on-line with a credit card or debit card. (Visit our website for
the link. A small fee will be added for each purchase). When paying on-line a student must print the Parking
Permit Form, make payment, print receipt, and bring to Chancellor on one of the designated dates to receive a
Parking Decal. In addition students must pay class dues and be free from any debts before being allowed to
purchase a permit. Please contact Mr. Gebhardt with any questions. In addition students must pay class dues
and be free from any debts before being allowed to purchase a permit.
Parking Permits: (sold in the main lobby)
Monday, August 24, 9-11 a.m. (seniors ONLY)
Tuesday, August 25, 9-11 a.m. (juniors and seniors)
During the regular school year, Parking Permits will be sold in the main office.
ATTENTION: Electronic Devices Are Not Permitted During School Hours
During the 2015-2016 school year the staff of Chancellor High School will be actively enforcing the
rules regarding the use of electronic device by our students. Any student who brings an electronic device
to school must have them turned off and put away in the back packs or secured in the lockers or cars.
If any student fails to comply with this rule, their electronic device will be confiscated by teacher/staff member, and brought to the office. The items will be labeled with the student’s name and secured until a parent
comes to the school to retrieve the item. Items can only be picked up between 2:30 pm to 4:00 p.m.
Monday thru Friday. In the event that this infraction continues, the student will also be subject to discipline. (Please refer to the Spotsylvania County Code of Conduct, B, 1, o, page 8 which states: The following acts violate the Code of Student Conduct: using or having a cellular telephone (or similar communications device) which has been turned on while riding a school bus to or from school or once entering school
property for the purpose of attending school until departing school grounds following the end of the regular
school day. Such devices may not be visibly displayed during these times. They may be confiscated and
held for later return to a parent or guardian. The school does not assume any liability nor responsibility for
theft or damage to such devices.)
Please encourage your child to leave their electronic devices at home (namely the I-Pods, MP-3 players, etc.)
While parents find comfort in their teenagers having cell phones for emergency situations, there is really no
reason for students to use them during the day. Students may not use their cell phones to call or text message anyone during school hours. If students are involved in after-school activities, they may certainly use
their cell phones after school hours. However, please be aware that the likelihood of “theft” still remains
high. If student refuses to give up their cell phone, it will be an automatic out of school suspension.
